This guy and people that elected him are absolutely insane. Oh, and now Evan Thomas, card carrying member of the Ministry of Propaganda, says there is a "slightly creepy cult of personality" feel to him. It would have been nice if he reported that before he was given the most powerful position on earth. GOD HELP US!

I thought community service was what you were required to do as a punishment for a misdemeanor crime. So is voluntary service masochism?
Is this the change we have been waiting for the mainstreaming of S&M. Posted by: Buzzsaw at November 08, 2008 02:04 AM (MOdlB) 6
We need a conservative outfit dedicated to nothing but caching Obama's governmental web sites, and looking for changes in them from week to week. I expect them to "change" often.

For a bit of good news, it appears that 1984's "Memory Hole" is more difficult to arrange in the 2008 world of internet archiving. Of course, the bad news is that it's difficult to get everyone to care about things from the past.....preachers, bomb-throwing associates, bagmen, tax evaders....

America Serves...(the State)
How Left is Obama? His latest initiative shows he's been reading too many bad Soviet Novels. He has embraced the concept of Subotniki- a soviet era practice where good comrades gathered together on Saturdays to do community service. It was more peer coerced labor on Saturdays, than mandatory. (But the State was watching). In other words, Subotniki was free labor. I am all for community service on a voluntary basis. The problem with Obama's plan is the term "require", which implies negative consequences if you don't comply. Nor is there any mention of compensation. That means you are required to work for the State for free. That's slavery. Next will be communal living. Anyone with an empty room(s) in their house will be required to house a stranger at no charge in order to solve the housing shortage. I just can't wait until I get to share a room in Geffen's house in Malibu. Welcome to Obamanation. More to come. Posted by: Kolchak at November 08, 2008 03:12 AM (//Qr5) 18
Obama has already been forced back on his Nancy Reagan remark and the school slavery plan. By the time he gets into office and realizes that Nancy Pelosi wears the butless leather chaps in D.C., he may begin to regret taking the job.

Some thoughts on how to remake the Republican brand:
We need to become the party of the people, the party of working Joes -- we need to go anti-Washington. They will give us many opportunities to denounce the evils of inside-the-beltway elitism, of nanny-statism, of corruption, government-media cronyism, of "we know better than you." We need to start playing the class card big time. We need to slowly purge ourselves of the porkers and country-clubbers. We need to start campaigning on term limits, and mean it! I believe we can pass a term limits amendment within 10 years! (We're going to need it, badly.) We need to reach out and bring into the big tent everyone who is going to feel oppressed by the leviathan of big government. We can grab many libertarians we didn't before. This isn't about what we do in 2010. This is about what we do by 2020. But we gotta start now. Palin would be the ideal face for the new Republicanism. Whether it's mandatory or not, for high-school students who want to go to college it'll be just about mandatory. Why?
1. College tutions will rise by about $4,000 since there'll be $4,000 more money per student rattlin' around to pay for it. 2. The admissions process will expect the prospective student to do his voluntary service. On the bright side, the fact that Obama rolled over so quickly on this means that he doesn't have very strong opinions on this. And, since this was one of his first proposals (and you'd assume the stuff mentioned first would be the most important), he might be as malleable as we expected. Now malleability isn't something to like in a President BUT if the pres is full of bad ideas at least he can be persuaded to not follow through on the ones that are strongly opposed. Finally, > Whatever, dude, I was just trying to be helpful. So's Obama. Posted by: Arthur at November 08, 2008 05:45 AM (okzMG) 32
#33 you're right, Arthur. Colleges and universities will rightly see this as a huge subsidy, and will soak it up.
And only a selfish college-bound 5-percenter's kid would be so ... selfish ... as not to have done his voluntary community service. Posted by: Loren Heal at November 08, 2008 06:14 AM (s9Ak0) 33
We had a mandatory voluntary community service requirement at my law school, which was instituted by our far-left dean.
The only organizations that counted as "community service" were left wing groups, like ACORN. You could fulfill your requirement by working for a pro-choice group, but not for a pro-life group. Volunteering for a judge or the district attorney didn't even count. Shocker, I know. Posted by: Scout at November 08, 2008 08:04 AM (4DIx7) 34
They has to postpone implementation because the millions of little red books won't be ready in time.

Maybe us old farts over 55 should volunteer for in-school programs. Go out and teach young skulls full of mush about freedom, the Constitution and Bill of Rights (1st and 2nd Amendments anyone?), military history (they get precious little of that anymore), American exceptionalism, conservation of natural resources (as opposed to Sierra Cult preservationist nonsense), science (as opposed to AlGore's theology of AGW), etc. Two sides can play this frickin' indoctrination game. "Barry just realized that he cranked up the fire under the pot a little too high and the frogs noticed they were about to be boiled."
Private colleges can demand what they want. Public institutions should not be directing anyone to work in service of anyone or anything, (students are to receive instruction, period, not donate their labor to the government in return) let alone ideas they don't support, or programs that advance an agenda they find objectionable. So now it is 4k a pop to do community service in the way of what...tax credits?
I can't even see bantering this idea around because in doing so, it gives the idea credence. With the way the government is flushing massive amounts of cash down the rat hole, with these bailout crimes, is it too much to ask our genius leaders to at least STOP coming up with more social garbage that would need mountains of money to fund at least until we get the ship back on course? Why on Earth are we racing as fast as we can to the bottom, whats the hurry? Posted by: Drider at November 08, 2008 10:11 AM (IQAbf) 48
The hurry is the faster we get to the bottom, the more attractive socialism is for the masses. I can't wait to get my gun (hopefully today).

So let's get this straight. Obama had a stupid and bad idea. It came in for criticism. He immediately changed it, making it less stupid and less bad. What's the problem? The problem is the initial plan. He had to change it because people didn't embrace it like he'd thought they would. But what comes next? Besides, the $4000 for the college kids logging 100 hrs. community service? Where's that going to come from? I'll bet the capitalist pig universities aren't going to cough it up. This is some scary crap considering the first thing he will do is muzzle his critics with the fairness doctrine .Then with Emanual who has, throughout his career, either strong armed or flat out threatened those in the Democratic party that speak against it. And who is to stop it from Happening? The domocrats knew all about the widepsread fraud and corruption the entire campaign and even his vilolent radical ties. They not only went along with the fraud but in and in sone cases theyactully particiapted. They swept it everything under the rug. Think the in the tank media is going to stop covering and sweeping under the rug now that he is in office? They are going to paint everything as good for you and something you want to be donem like passing the fairness doctrine

So let's get this straight. Obama had a stupid and bad idea. It came in for criticism. He immediately changed it, making it less stupid and less bad. What's the problem?
-------------------- or rather, he changed the wording in order to sell this crap to the public. That does not mean he is giving up making it a requirement. Just rewording it to make it less Marxist when presented to John Q. public. No doubt, he will bury the "required" part somewhere in there and of course the media will spin unicorns and rainbows. Once its pass3ed, then you'll find out that it is in fact required. This is not a man that gives up. He gets his way by hook or by crook or flat out lying Posted by: Road King at November 08, 2008 07:53 PM (B/Y39) 59
So, the plan is now you get $40/hr for college for 100 hours of 'service'.
The fine print here probably has you've got to go thru some sort of propaganda/indoctrination sensitivity training mill as part of your 100 hours of "service". The focus of this 'training' is likely to be teaching one to an Obamaton political bigot, ready to take on conservatives at every turn. Ultra-fine print -- I'm not sure how any propaganda training would be any different than just attending your average K12/college these days. The curious feature here is likely to be how the Obamatons square up going to a 'religious' college like Notre Dame. A clever GOP ought to be able to lever this into giving some options for attending private schools instead of the typical public propaganda mills. Perhaps not via direct legislation, but via tweeking the language to allow an age based discrimination suit that would open up a private school option.
