| Financial Crisis Cripples Transition, Obama Powerless to Stop ItGawd. Did they lower expectations like this 8 years ago? WASHINGTON (AP) — As president-elect, Barack Obama faces a tricky task as he begins dealing ever more directly with the economic meltdown, grappling with the worst financial crisis in seven decades but not yet wielding the power to do much about it. He won't be a participant at President Bush's global summit next week, although the 20 leaders attending are no doubt keenly interested in his views. And he may have to eventually push back against some members of his own party in Congress over details of a new plan to stimulate the economy. He's been President elect for a day and a half, and already he faces an uphill battle with members of his own party?! What the hell more power does he need? He's got a full-up Congress and the mandate of the lovin world. Are we seriously to believe that 2 (maybe 3) Senators can thwart his awesomeness? That'd be cool. I'm not bitching. But seriously, RLY? At this rate by March we'll all be satisfied enough to know he actually showed up on time for cabinet meetings. It's not a honeymoon. Too soon for that nonsense. No, this is more like Pass Go, Collect $200. Add zeroes as the mood fits. Comments1
Of course, the completely unexpected sell off on Wall Street was not, in any way, associated with his stated determination to raise capital gains taxes. Why would people be yanking their dough from Wall Street?

Hope n change can't run a country. You actually have to, you know, do things. Besides talk in front of zombies.
People will realize, within 6 months, that this was an epic mistake. When Russia invades Ukraine in January, and his press conference is essentially "hummina hummina hummina" everyone - who isn't an obamabot - will lose confidence in him. The honeymoon will last for as long as the MSM is willing to lay the blame for everything at Bush's feet. Of course, if the MSM and Obama had their way, the 2012 election would be a referendum on Bush. I don't think it will last quite that long, but I have a feeling it's going to last much longer than normal.
There aren't many elections in 2009. The two biggest are for governor ofVirginia and New Jersey. They usually go against the president's party, and that's with him only having been in office for a little over nine months. Can you see the thrill-up-my-leg media turning on Obama at all in that time? Can you see his cultists becoming disillusioned in that time? I can't. I want to have the audacity to hope that the public will see what Obama's really like and will want change - change we can believe in - but I don't see the media letting that happen. Hey Dave,
You might be interested in reading-up on the story of the tour-de-force performance of our governor Deval Patrick. He's another Axelrod project ['Yes we can!']-- a practice run for the big-league long-bomb of obama. There are many parallels: Overwhelmingly Democratic House and Senate, but other than some fancy drapes and a nice Cadillac, he hasn't managed to build any consensus to accomplish much of note. We can only hope that obama meets with similar bickering logjams that the democratic party falls heir to when over-confident.... Christ... Don't get me started.... --oldowan Posted by: oldowan at November 06, 2008 10:19 PM (beiic) 12

Heh, not in New Jersey, they don't. I had some hope for this election, but that was a pipe dream. I'm back to my old way of thinking. 1) With the single exception of Chris Smith, the Republican Party in NJ is completely infiltrated and serves as nothing more than placeholders so that no one actually opposes the Democrats, ever, and 2) the voters are -literally- zombies who are capable only of shuffling, moaning "braaaains", and recognizing the pattern "(D)" and pushing any button next to it. There is no level of corruption possible by human beings that would stop them from voting for Democrats. Ever. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at November 06, 2008 10:19 PM (3FVXC) 13
OT but this nugget needs to be shared.
Obama has $88 million left in his coffers. Wasn't it clever of him to hold out on Hillary until after he was assured that she wouldn't torpedo his election? Now he'll give Hillary her $24 million. Pure fucking brilliance on his part. Obama played Hillary like a finely tuned piano and that's slick. Obama kept Bill & Hillary on a short leash and they did exactly what he wanted them to do. Out-slicking the Clintons...priceless. Posted by: Bart at November 06, 2008 10:19 PM (ICFJ+) 14

Let's make predictions:
1) Obama is a do-nothing poseur of a president, happy to bask in applause and get fellated like the affirmative-action fraud he is; or 2) Obama is the Manchurian candidate set in motion by the Weather Underground, his mission to destroy capitalism and the U.S. military by slashing the defense budget, nationalizing 401(k)'s and yanking them out of the stock market, and confiscating all income above $50,000 (or whatever). Which one? I don't think Ayers would've wasted twenty years grooming him if he wasn't going to get something in return. But then maybe Obama just used Ayers to get to be president, and never had any intention of doing his masters' bidding. Maybe he just wanted the applause and blowjobs. But then again, wouldn't Ayers have the goods on him by now and be able to force him to do his bidding? God, I hate McCain for being a loser... I always thought Obama was pretty sinister, so I'm going with Manchurian candidate intent on serving us up a big ol' cuppa Third World Dictatorship. "Honeymoon?".... Obama and the MSM are more like a longtime, illicit affair that can’t be acknowledged in the open. Legit marriages have honeymoons, followed by good times, bad times….the strains and rewards of healthy relationship. This is different. A raw attraction that isn’t right, that will hurt the family, but can’t be denied. Just like the comedy writers that suddenly can’t do political humor, the news media’s relationship with The One will bring immediate gratification, followed by a nagging, unavoidable sense of shame.

"The fact is that this president goes into office with more
expectations than any president I can ever remember in my lifetime,"
said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Which no human being could possibly satisfy. But you sold those fools the product. Now deliver, or else. But some liberal Democrats may expect him to deliver more than they're likely to get. As Pelosi was quick to note, "The country must be governed from the middle," and that will increase pressure on Obama to make compromises. That would be an unexpected surprise, if it ever happens. I ain't holding my breath. He may have to scale back some of the long-term spending programs he advocates to pay for crash legislation to keep what already looks like a recession from turning into something much worse. AKA, "The Obama Recession". ... Obama has called for about $175 billion in new stimulus spending, including money for roads, bridges and aid to hard-pressed states. He wants a rebate of $500 for individuals, $1,000 for families and a new $3,000 tax credit for businesses for each new job created. Yeah, man. I lost like, $150,000 since yesterday because you were elected. but gimmy $500 and it'll be cool, ya know. As the gaffe-tastic Joe said, "Gird your loins". It's going to be a long 4, err, 8, err 10 years. Somebody is pulling this puppet's strings and it's somebody beyond Ayers. From the office of President Elect Barack Obama:
There's been a misconception on the part of most Americans. I never said that I would give a tax break to 95% of Americans. I said that I would give a tax break to 95 Americans. Seriously people 95%. How dumb can you be? Anyway I'll let the lucky 95 know who they are in a few years. Posted by: TheQuietMan at November 06, 2008 11:20 PM (bAz7Y) 85

Interesting. Read this blog: Chris Dodd: Screw Obama, I'm In Charge Here! A couple of questions for Obamatards:
(1) Is dissent still the highest form of patriotism? I have a feeling that something else is about to edge dissent out... probably, hm... unity? Hope? Change? Yeah, that's the ticket. (2) When gas hits $4 or more next summer, will it be because of Obama is trying to enrich his oil company buddies? (3) Michelle Obama is young enough to have another kid. If she does, are we free to speculate that it's not her kid, but one of her daughters'? Now I know what you're going to say: "her daughters are too young to have kids, and still will be for a couple of years." "Did they lower expectations like this 8 years ago?"
No, but they certainly did 16 years ago. I don't know if you're old enough to remember. "I've never worked harder for anything in my life than I have to try to find the money for a middle class tax cut. But the Bush Administration was not honest with us. Things are far worse than we ever could have imagined. I don't see any way that a responsible administration can afford a middle class tax cut. It hurts me worse than anything, and I've never worked harder in my life for anything, there's just no way we can give you that tax cut, not after the condition that Bush left our country in." I'm certainly no genius, and I was certainly not alone; in fact people whose opinions actually matter have been saying this for a while. But regardless, yup, the middle class tax cut came with an expiration date, as has every Obama promise, and this one isn't even going to make it to January. Now that you mention it, let's take a walk down memory lane to that time where Bush was President-Elect. It was the Day of the Dangling Chad, remember? Bush faced the most rocky and most brief "transition" period, ever. Bush was arguing for a long time that the transition period should begin, that preparations should be started should he emerge on top over Al Gore. The economy, foreign policy, a lot was as stake during that crazy "transition". All that was roundly denied by Clinton and particularly the MSM who took the attitude, "How dare he?" Word is Bush, starting out behind the normal curve, was just getting his administration really going when 9-11 hit. Additionally, a recession was obvious by December, 2000 and Bush said so. He got pilloried for it, accused of "talking up a recession", in that his mention of it would fuel the ongoing crisis of confidence and risk becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Responsible presidents, you see, ones possessed of true "gravitas", do not talk up doom and gloom! Yeah, what happened to all those nostrums in the MSM of yore? More questions for the Obamatards:
(4) Much has been made about Obama meeting with dictators and the like without "preconditions" or "preparations" or what have you. Whatever. My only question is: "will the preparations involve anything other than buying kneepads and lip balm?" (5) That mole on Obama's face: what the fuck? That community service is going to come in the form of two things:
1) Some sort of Dem bullshit such as working for ACORN or raising awareness of global warming by passing out literature on people's doors. or 2) some type of menial labor such as picking up litter or volunteering in food shelters. If it's any type of labor, it will piss off people who actually do that type of work for a living, e.g., municipal workers. Another gem from change.gov: Provide a Tax Cut for Working Families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 150 million workers the tax relief they need. Obama and Biden will create a new "Making Work Pay" tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. The "Making Work Pay" tax credit will completely eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans. Call me nuts, but I don't think 150 million is 95% of "working families." Is it? I'd like to see the math on this one. The change.gov website is some scary shit. I'm guessing those middle class tax cuts and rebates are going to die on the floor of the Pelosi house. Obama will propose them, Frank will spank them down, and Obama will eventually sign a comprise bill "that is needed to allow the economy to recover and pay for Bush wars." From the new http://www.change.gov/agenda/urbanpolicy/ Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets. Sorry Cromagnum but so many people seem to have such silly expectation of these guys as if they are just like Clinton.
Obama’s new guy Rahm Emanuel wants: “1. A new social contract — universal citizen service, universal college access, universal retirement savings, and universal children’s health care — that makes clear what you can do for your country and what your country can do for you.” “We need a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us by establishing for the first time an ethic of universal citizen service. All Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 should be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic civil defense training and community service. This is not a draft, nor is it military. Young people will be trained not as soldiers, but simply as citizens who understand their responsibilities in the event of a natural disaster, an epidemic or a terrorist attack. Universal citizen service will bring Americans of every background together to make America safer and more united in common purpose.” Posted by: Travis at November 07, 2008 12:38 AM (uOj//) 161

I've been preaching it, there will be no "honeymoon." By inauguration day everyone who isn't scared shitless will be sick of him. Ever hear of the Peter Principle. This guy went over his head in the US Senate, now he's way deep. His only hope is to name John (Fear the Mustache) Bolton as Sec State and find out if there's anybody that Donald Rumsfield is afraid of and name him Sec Def. Since nobody really fits that description, call John McCain. Go find somebody from Chicago for Treasury and then just sit behind his desk and let the grownups work for the next four years. There will not be a fucking military coup. Not in 2010, and not any other time. Unlike President Elect Urkel, the military actually has principles and takes pride in the fact that we are not some fucking banana republic.

OT; Chinese hack into White House network
Chinese hackers have penetrated the White House computer network on multiple occasions, and obtained e-mails between government officials, a senior US official told the FT. The cyber attackers managed to penetrate the White House system for brief periods that allowed them to steal information before US government experts each time patched the system. US government cyber experts suspect the attacks were sponsored by the Chinese government, although they cannot say for definite. Posted by: incognito at November 07, 2008 12:51 AM (Rpam5) 170

I can't believe nobody hit on this:
"grappling with the worst financial crisis in seven decades" Going back to the Depression? Yeah, because the 1970s were a breeze. Oh, how I long for those halcyon days of double-digit inflation (13%) and double-digit interest rates (17%). Reagan inherited that shit. He didn't whine that it was too much to handle. He just kicked its ass. Posted by: Dave S. at November 07, 2008 04:07 AM (2KVJg) 186
If Obama really wanted to get started early, as he claims, be could get his party to reconvene Congress. He is still a US Senator; he could propose legislation between now and January. Instead, his people are whining that the economy is Bush's fault, and Bush isn't letting him attend enough important meetings. They'll probably still be whining in February about how their 'slow start' is Bush's fault. God bless him, Obama might be exactly what the country needs. Somebody too lazy to let any legislation pass. No new legislation would be awesome for this country. Sure, tax breaks and other laws would sunset, but it's a trade-off. developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year
I have an idea lets set up community service pick up sites through out the country. These sites can be across the street from the day labor sites. A great activity for these youths would be coming through neighborhoods and performing beautification programs such as leaf raking, picking up trash and mowing lawns. Of course I imagine that the day laborers would get kind of pissed and maybe they would go across the street and beat up the community service youth workers. Frankly I would put my money on the day laborers in those matches. Posted by: Long Island at November 07, 2008 06:39 AM (XHzEP) 188

Empty suit equals empty promises. The country is already virtually bankrupt without the support of Japan, China and some of the OPEC nations. They have us by the short-hairs and should they decide they want to dump our dollars, we are headed for staggering inflation. Yet here come more companies with their hands out for more money. Obama can't uphold any of his campaign promises without sending us another step further to the edge of the cliff.

``Volunteering is only as hard as you want to make it, and government
jobs are the easiest work in the world. Combine the two and we're
basically handing out money to teenagers to sit around bullshitting and
grab-assing.''
Good point. I worked as a judge of election for the first time on Tuesday, and one of our Democratic judges was a young guy who spent more time taking breaks and gabbing with the precinct captain than actually, y'know, checking names and handing out ballots. The two other D judges for our precinct didn't show up at all. So it was the two R judges (myself and a guy named Steve) who basically did all the work. Sounds like a metaphor for any Democratic administration, especially the one upcoming. Posted by: Annalucia at November 07, 2008 08:58 AM (OMiLl) 194
The government service work is confusing to me. Here in Michigan, we can't have prisoners, etc. doing "day work" because it is taking a job away from Union members. Obama is BIG on Unions, so how will he get around that???

Prediction: Military coup in 2010
Really, we don't want be talking this way. This isn't even a last resort, it's the sign of the abject failure of the American Experiment. If this goes down, we are Rome with iPods. Granted, that was always a risk considering the political DNA the Founders gave us, but the whole point of being a wingnut is so that we DON'T have to bow and scrape to a polished killer on a crimson throne. George Washington said "Fuck that." He was right then and he's right now. Posted by: Andrew the Noisy at November 07, 2008 09:30 AM (V0QP1) 197

196 -- No. Not this military. Lefties are attached to the European image of a military, with heredity officer classes and masses of faceless scum grunts, the sweepings of the gutters and the prisons, who enlisted for drink. And, to be fair, it's a model Europe has successfully exported to much of the world.
But not here. Not even with our own draftee army back in the day and not today with a volunteer force drawn from the mainstream population. Wouldn't happen. The services would tear themselves apart first. Posted by: richard mcenroe at November 07, 2008 11:50 AM (n7hY1) 201
