| Reid Is Ready to Settle AccountsDisloyalty will be punished and it's hard to claim that Lieberman has been loyal. Reid, in a sternly worded statement after the 45-minute meeting, said no official decisions have been made. But an aide to the Nevada Democrat said Reid was leaning toward removing Lieberman as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were confidential. "While I understand that Sen. Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus," Reid said. [...] Bouncing Lieberman from his committee post would require the approval of the Democratic caucus, which is expected to meet this month. "I want to spend some time in the next few days thinking about what Sen. Reid and I discussed what my options are at this point," Lieberman said. "He promised me that he would do the same and we would continue these conversations."I assume he saw this coming, but it seems that he has very little with which to hold off his triumphant former-allies. This is awesome.
The Democrats are setting the table for a 2010 midterm backlash. It's up to us to seize every opportunity they give us. Carpe diem, muthafuckas. Carpe diem. Posted by: Bart at November 06, 2008 09:43 PM (ICFJ+) 2
Rahm Emanuel wasn't picked to rough up the Republicans, he was picked to be an enforcer of party discipline.
Their are Dems who are about to learn what the rest of us already know about Obama.

1. Lieberman isn't up again until 2010. 2. The Republicans and a lot of Independents are what helped get Lieberman re-elected in 2006 after the Dems voted in Ned Lamont over him. Joe Lieberman will never join the GOP. Never.
He'll be quite content with his very-reelectable-Independent status, and he'll continue to vote with the Dems on 99% of everything because 1) he's a pussy and 2) he's a liberal, lack of chairmanship withstanding. There's as much of a chance of Lieberman joining the GOP as McCain suddenly becoming an ardent defender of Conservatism. They're both treated like shit by the Democrats but, like Hillary, they'll never ever join the other side. Posted by: Bart at November 06, 2008 10:10 PM (ICFJ+) 37

Well, if I was Reid I'd feel the same way. I respect Joe's choice, and it's nice that he's right on least a couple of major issues, but you can't really be a Dem and then campaign for the other party, even if the candidate is a RINO. That said, they stabbed him in the back first. Joe's not really a Repub either, I imagine he'll just vote how he likes but not really caucus. Posted by: Holdfast at November 06, 2008 10:15 PM (Gzb30) 41
Bart,
Liebs isn't a pussy. A pussy would not have endorsed McCain and spoken at the GOP convention against the Donkey Messiah. He's not one of us, but he isn't a pussy. That doesn't mean he'll caucus with the Republicans, but it won't be because he's a pussy, it will be because he truly shares more of their hideous values in spite of how badly they might treat him. He's a man of principal. Unfortunately for us, most of his principals are awful. Posted by: Kensington at November 06, 2008 10:16 PM (xFNQx) 42

This is why Lieberman should tell the Dems to go screw themselves and caucus with the Republicans. He's got 4 years to convince the people of CT that he's worth electing regardless of what party he works with.
The issue is, however, people would start calling him a RINO (or the non-Democrat Democrat version of such) and demand his excommunication from any connection to the GOP...like they want to do with Lindsey Graham, John McCain, etc. These people shouldn't necessarily be our presidential nominees, but they're good for the GOP to have on their side. Posted by: Dan at November 06, 2008 10:39 PM (lvOPl) 52
I hope Reid kicks Liebs out. Nothing would send a stronger message that the age of bipartisanship and national unity proclaimed mere days ago is merely a fraud, and that what is wanted is acquiesence, not differing views. An Obama who meant what he meant would go to bat for ol' Liebs and the idea that Americans are not going to have to deal with this endless cycle of revenge. But I have no hope of that, as I never had any faith in the man. I don't think he's capable of the greatness that he has somehow come within reach of. Pity, really, but just desserts--he never truly earned it anyway. Posted by: Horatius at November 06, 2008 10:44 PM (0tBXl) 53
But an aide to the Nevada Democrat said Reid was leaning toward removing Lieberman as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Cool. Then if we're attacked we blame them for playing politics with security by removing an experienecd politician from a committee that should be bi-partisan. Hey, I kinda like being in the minority. Every single bad event gets laid at their feet. Posted by: Warden at November 06, 2008 10:45 PM (QoR4a) 54

Remember, Lieb's won his seat as an independent, CT knows the national donks screwed him. He probably won't change to GOP, but he will caucus with them and make sure he sticks a thumb in their eye on national security issues and very likely economic/taxation issues - even though he's been a true donk in his votes, he began giving Rudy's economic talking points with an level of clarity that indicates he actually may get it now. Blue on blue. I thank Joe Lieberman for his help, but it isn't like he swung CT for McCain. We have no dog in this fight, I am sure that Lieberman has been offered more than once the opportunity to come over to the GOP, and he stuck with Donks when they fucking fired him from the party. If I were Lieberman, I'd say "Fuck all y'all Nickelback haters!" (inside joke) and continue on in that uniquely Lieberman way that we all know and love. In case the Dems didn't notice, they already tried to "punish" him. He said "Screw it" and ran as an Independent. And was RE-ELECTED. He doesn't need the Democrats or their stupid, petty bullshit. Go, Joe! Go! Posted by: jana at November 07, 2008 12:07 AM (vSRlG) 62
Reid doesn't need Joe anymore. He's sorely tempted to punish Joe. It would be foolish to do so, because it is needless. There are other battles to fight, many better ways to spend your political captial. But it's obviously tempting as hell to Reid, isn't it? Let's see his true nature come out on this one, will he succumb to the pleasure of vindictiveness and the exercise of new powers for this? I betcha he will. Congressional baronies are such a dark temptation! Posted by: Cowboy at November 07, 2008 12:43 AM (0u7vW) 63

Damn, it's 19-15 Republicans to Democrats up again in 2010.
As a math teacher, I think I can maintain, conclusively, that in one of these upcoming cycles, given the fact that the Democrats control a majority of the Senate, that there ought to be more Democrat seats up for election than Republican. But it definitely didn't happen in 2008, and it apparently won't happen in 2010. Evidently, 2012 is a motherfucker. Posted by: notropis at November 07, 2008 12:59 AM (8vxHo) 65
Dan: There is a big difference between a New England "RINO" and Lindsey Graham. People like Shays, Snowe, and Collins represent leftist constituencies and cannot go against what they want without getting shellacked like Santorum, or even Sununu. Graham could be a clone of Santorum and win in South Carolina; but, he doesn't bother, because he's just an asshole like that. We have to be nice to Snowe and Lieberman. We owe no such courtesy to Graham. Posted by: David Ross at November 07, 2008 01:18 AM (hm8sH) 66

Ah, it will be fun to watch the Gang of 10 or 20 take over the Senate from the Dems far left.
If only the GOP House could figure a way to get together with the Blue Dogs to take over control of the House. The reality is the Democrat Congress hasn't done squat in the last two years and it's likely to face the consequences next election or two if nothing is done. Anyway you put it, it seems the Messiah may soon have to do some serious community organizing or he's doomed to be an empty suit, ceding control to the PRESSSSident, if he hasn't already. Posted by: Dr Fred at November 07, 2008 01:59 AM (JbxXM) 68
Booting Lieberman out would be a big mistake.
He may not flip and go to the republicans, but it would completely free him from any notions that he needed to fall in line and keep his mouth shut about shit he felt a little queasy about. Harry would be creating a high profile defense and foreign policy critic with no shackles restraining him when he talks with the press..and Lieberman is high profile enough that he will get face time with the press. Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 07, 2008 07:11 AM (OqXyp) 69
One ray of hope for us for the coming years: the Dems really, really can't help themselves. Two days after the election and they're already overreaching.
Sure, they no longer need Lieberman to hold a majority.... but how many times this year are they going to wish he was a solid vote for cloture (against Republican filibusters)? Idiots. If they were smart, they'd be inviting him back into the party. Posted by: Clint at November 07, 2008 08:45 AM (oZ5OG) 70
You can expect a lot of these articles on how the new president's team is so intense, how steely their determination and rock-steady their nerves, how wise they are, how smart, how they will enforce the president's will and get his agenda through Congress with nary a bead of persperation marring their brows. This is pretty common fare. By mid next year the reality will be shown, that Congress is a beast no president can tame. Mr. Emanual will need every ounce of saavy he has to deal with 535 of the most overweening egos ever to be gathered in one building. Posted by: Mikey NTH at November 07, 2008 01:30 PM (O9Cc8) 71
