Not everyone is right for consideration--she's not.

I don't care if it's The Joy of Cooking, anyone worthy of consideration for Number Two has got to advertise that he/she actually does have at least a shred of candlepower. She sounded lightweight because she was a novice at dealing with the national media and was unnerved by a session with a hostile interviewer.  I'm not sure why her flub on a question to Katie Couric is any more damning than the stuff Joe Biden said.  Do you really think that Biden doesn't know that "JOBS" is a four letter word?  Neither do I.  But neither do I believe that the Chief Executive of Alaska doesn't read newspapers.

Good politicians grow from such experiences and there is no reason to believe that Palin doesn't have the intelligence and character to refine her national persona.  In eight years she will be only 52 years old.  My guess is that she is grow leaps and bounds over the next few years.   Hopefully that process will not cause her to lose touch with her populist origins.

I don't usually rebut rebuttals, because I made my point, and you're entitled to make yours. I think I've given the wrong impression, though, either because I didn't make clear my point, or because it was misunderstood. I'll try to clarify.

To someone defensive about reading, it could be seen that way. It was a softball question, though, really. Can you name a book you've read in the last month? The last six? Why couldn't she? Moreover, it was an open invitation for us to get a sense of what interests her, what the cast of her mind is. She could've used the opportunity to rock Couric, but she let it go. "Well, Katie, I'm glad you asked. I've been reading up on the history of XX, and the author has some great points to make about YY." I got the sense that she's uneasy around such things, and at least a passing awareness of the world around her. I don't care that she hasn't travelled abroad; I'd just like to think that she's got enough curiosity about the modern world to have at least a serviceable inventory of ideas--a kind of "mental furniture"--about it. I didn't get that sense. As for the Charlie Gibson interview, it was certainly an ambush question. She'd have to field harder questions than that, and more difficult situations, in national office. I'd hope she'd have the aplomb to be able to either gaff him off more gracefully or take him down.

I hope she does, though I have my doubts. As I said, her ideological underpinning seems sound. As someone in another thread said, she's just "green." My counterpoint was in reaction to the rush to judgement by those who claim she's the "future of the party" when we've only known the woman for a couple months, and who think that anyone who thinks otherwise is some kind of Quisling or worse. She's not ready now; she may be ready in the future; I'd rather see her put in a decade or more of public service before she aspires for national office. I felt the same way about Obama, which is why I voted McCain/Palin. 

That she could get 20,000 people to a rally is great. My point isn't that she's not a draw; she clearly is, and I never tried to claim that she wasn't a charismatic candidate. My point is that she's not a compelling candidate. She might be one day, though I doubt it. I'd like to be proven wrong. Jessica Simpson could draw 20,000 conservatives, and no one is arguing that she'd be ready, either. And before you hyperventilate about my correlation of Simpson with Palin, consider the point: we need to be looking for people who can deliver the votes, sure. I'd just prefer that it be someone who is ready for the office as well. And in the end, Paula, "drawing crowds of 20,000" really didn't pay off, did it? People didn't vote for her because they didn't think she's ready. I don't, either, but the alternative in this case was much worse.

Only I've learned that the only way to really assess someone is in comparison to others who operate in the same environment. I have lots of friends and co-workers who went to good schools, have a veneer of sophistication and are pretty articulate but out of earshot I will admit that I don't find them especially bright, or as it pertains to co-workers - particularly good at what they do.

124 I really like Sarah Palin. I think when she first cam out at the convention that we were gonna see something good. Then she was kept under wraps too long. It felt like she was so afraid to say anything or she would ruin the campaign. Look at Biden. She was way better than him. McCain was just too old and controlling. I voted for them and was disappointed that they lost. It was not her fault. She brought a refreshing energy that McCain could not. 126 I hate to be a contrarian but I feel it is entirely possible that Palin was sooo deficient that the people who were trying to control her just snapped. Palin to thank her for her work and apologize for how terribly she is being treated. Botched rollout or not, the problem is that she drove a bunch of others back home.  Like those moderate republicans that everyone seems to dump on.   You know, the majority that brought Reagan to power in the first place.

As a Republican women, wife, mother and self-employed marketing consultant, I am ashamed of my party!  These petty and self-serving comments are an insult to John McCain and our party.    Schmidt and Wallace, have been on a mission to trash Sarah Palin to the media!  I can only imagine this was done to deflect their "brilliant" strategy of introducing the most popular governor in the United States through interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.  How did that strategy work?  For Schmidt, who never graduated from college, to question her intelligence is very interesting indeed. Recently, the media asked Schmidt if Sarah Palin cost McCain votes and his response was no comment!  Nicole Wallace, a Berkley grad, former CBS employee and co-worker with Couric, has been the source of leaks and deliberate misinformation to defame the first national women candidate for the GOP.  Is there any wonder why Americans are turned off by the political process?      For over 13 years I have been proud of the Republican Party and when John McCain selected Sarah Palin as the first Republican women nominated to a national ticket, I was elated!!  I live outside the beltway and I have seen first-hand how she has energized our demoralized base.  She is the future of this party no matter what Schmidt and Wallace say!  Sarah Palin is an intelligent, confident, practical and self-made woman.  With so little role models in the Republican Party, she is exactly what we need as we look to the future.  Like most women, she became involved locally through her PTA and as a small business owner. She didn't attend an Ivy League college, she graduated from a state university and along the way also attended a community college because she couldn't afford college full time.    Sarah Palin drew record-breaking crowds because America connected with someone who is real and genuine.  Schmidt and Wallace are Washington, DC parasites that rise and fall because of someone else�s accomplishments.  Sarah Palin was not only targeted by the media, but also by a couple of rotten apples in her own campaign!     The Republican Party will be selecting a new Chairman in the upcoming months and my choice is Michael Steele!  Please contact your state party and show your support for Michael.  I have just created a site called www.steele4gopchair.com

They should have said, hey, she isn't the foreign policy expert on the ticket, McCain is. But instead they tried to make her into something she wasn't.
