But I voted for her because she understood the difference between faith and science, and understood the Constitution, well enough not to foist that nonsense in Alaskan schools. John McCain's campaign was a comedy of errors except the stakes were too high for it to be funny. He suspended his campaign, for what? An unpopular bailout. He called fair issues, i.e., Jeremiah Wright, off limits. And the list goes on. McCain has his "honorable defeat." Well that's really nice for him but it doesn't get him any respect from the left. They are probably laughing at him behind his back for being weak. Doesn't get him any respect from me either; I HATE to lose.

I was depressed last night but this has me fired up. Winning teams to not cannibalize themselves after a loss.

495 McCain lost because he was unable to articulate a coherent economic philosophy in the wake of the financial crisis, probably because he never had a coherent economic policy before the financial crisis. Larry Kudlow pointed out this lack time and again at NRO; McCain should have listened to him. I greatly respect the guy for his service to the country and his behavior as a POW, but that alone is not enough of a reason for people to elect you as president. As many others have pointed out, McCain was vague about just about everything except for national security, and thanks to W. and the surge, national security is off the table. Or rather, it will be off the table until one of the guys that Obama joyfully releases from Guantanamo decides to blow himself up in the middle of a major U.S. city, or something similar.

Okay, okay, that wasn't the ONLY reason that McCain lost, but I'd say it was the main reason. Another reason was that the guy would rather be "honorable" in defeat than "dishonorable" in victory. Someone should ask him if he feels that Reagan sacrificed his honor for victory. But a guy who went down to defeat in part because he was protective of his precious "honor" really, truly has to be consistent with that honor - otherwise, he just seems like a self-centered jerk who wants the glory of politics without the dirty hands.

Palin should stay far away from DC in the short term. In fact, much as I adore her, I'd counsel her not to seek the presidency/VP slot again for at least eight years. Yes, God knows, the thought of Sara sweeping into the White House in 2012 brings a tear to my eye, but I think the damage from her bungled rollout by the McCain camp needs more time to subside. She should also avoid any efforts to put her into a reality show or talk show. She's young - she has plenty of time.

What I'd do in her shoes is to seek to become a GOP point person on energy - it's not a huge issue at the moment, but it will be. As some others have said, offer to appear on "Meet the Press" et al just often enough to stay in the public eye, dropping in bits about how world events affect and are affected by energy. Also, I'm sure she'll have plenty of paid speaking opportunities should she wish them. She should take advantage of that, and save up enough to outfit her entire family in haute couture should she wish. Enjoy Alaska. Enjoy Trig. Enjoy her new grandbaby. Cheer Todd on in snow machine races. Get that pipeline built. Ease out the old corrupt figures in Alaska politics and ease in some bright young whippersnappers. Accept a speaking slot at the next couple of Republican conventions. Get acquainted with Republican foreign and domestic policy heavyweights and become fluent on a wide range of issues. Hell, chat with Joe Lieberman and Bill Clinton on foreign policy to at least learn the best ways to counter Democratic talking points.

Then she can re-enter the national political scene and crush all of her enemies. She'll be even more gorgeous in her 50s. By that time, Piper and Trig will be able to speak at the convention in support of their mom. That alone may be enough to get her elected in a landslide.

508 We just had parent-teacher conferences here last night. I ended up walking away realizing that not all teachers understand learning theory, especially in its application toward the recognition that different students learn through different approaches, reflecting the different kinds of young thinkers they're supposed to be educating.

My 4th grade daughter is her father's child. She's terribly abstract, but pretty mediocre at rote memorization skills. She maxes out her standardized tests, but got a C on her last geography test (all name memorization). I know many here are in the same category. Heck, while my day job deals with assessing business unit and application risk involving hundreds of millions of dollars at a time, you'd think I was an idiot if you asked me how many months have 31 vs 30 days. That's stuff I just never figured needed memorizing as there's plenty of places to reference it. NATO members? Please!!!

When Carl pointed out the "LOL... she doesn't /know/ the members of NATO," I reacted pretty quickly to this and wrote him off as another narcissistic soul who presumes all people are like him, and those that are non-formularic are idiots. Why would Palin need to know that as a Governor of Alaska? Carl, do you know the 12 ISO 27000 domains? What, you don't? OMG. So what if don't run an information risk program. I'm shocked you're so ignorant of something we consider basic in our field.

Both parties have become focused on style over substance, and the economic product is a logical result of this confusion. We need to decide whether we want people who remember lists of mostly irrelevant information, or people who know how to locate that information when it's deemed important and process it. And besides that, we need to exact consequences for these parasites. This is the time to identify who led us astray and throw them off the bus. Let's not repeat the mistakes next time around with people that aren't in it for the right reason.

In the mean time, she does need to refine her political philosophy and principles, and she also needs to fortify her credential some above energy issues, more economic (trade, finance, tax, job creation), more foreign policy (keep in touch with the foreign leaders she has met, build and expand her contacts), and even some military credential (more involvement with the AK NG, as well as her son's military service).
She needs to reappear on the national level twice or three time a year giving some speech of some insightful analysis.
She needs to build up political allies in all the other 49 states. perhaps even campaigning/endorsing for select few in 2010.

I am looking forward to see what she does in the next 3 years and how she would run her campaign in 2012.

514 Just wanted to mention that in order to run for president in 2012, Palin would have to start campaigning in early 2011, which means she would not run for a second term as governor in 2010. She would thus be running as a 1 term governor instead of a 1/2 term governor - better, but not much. I think a 2016 run is a lot more realistic.

520 What Palin brought to the ticket and what most of us here caused us to glom onto her was the fact that she shook the elite tree and brought down a whole raft of rotten fruit:  Noonan and Brooks being the most so.

Some people call that populism but I disagree.  She represented anti-elitism (not to be confused with anti-intellectualism).  In this sense she was the Jeffersonian ideal candidate:  a citizen reformer who worked with her hands and had an interest in civic affairs.

Clay Jenkinson, "The Thomas Jefferson Hour" should have loved her as he does Jefferson.  He did not.  Why?  Because guys like him and Noonan and Brooks only love the things they do in the abstract.  When the real thing comes along it terrifies them.

Mitt Romny with his coiffed hair and granite jaw know that Palin is the real deal right down to the teenaged pregnant daughter.  She is the gleam in Jefferson's eye three hundred years ago.  Andrew Jackson, Abe Lincoln, Harry Truman, and Ronald Reagan were also of this strain and all were despised by many.

Whether Palin runs in 2012 or never, she has reignitied the idea of a citizen government.  It will percolate.  Let us rebuild the conservative movement -- and Republican party -- around this idea.

Another aspect of all this is that Palin didn't go looking for all of this.  She was asked to be the VP pick.  And she "manned" up.  So when you fly up to Alaska and aske the extremely polular gov. to rescue your ass, have the decency to shut your trap afterwards.

Also, who gives a crap about the bathrobe?  Lots of coed type work environments have men and women changing clothes and showering etc. in limited space.  In medical school and residency, we used to change locker-room style and - since we were professionals with a common mission - we tried not to be juvenile about it all.  Seems like a bathrobe is a pretty good approach to the wirlwind pace of a campaign wherein people are changing clothes multiple times a day and are living in fairly close quarters.

It's also sexist now that I think of it.  Would anyone consider it "uncommon" for staffers to arrive at John McCain's suite and find him still in his bathrobe??

And lastly, this is another good reason to never run for office.  I'm pretty sure everyone is a sleep deprived asshole during the closing days and I sure don't want my bad moments laid out like dirty laundry for all to see.

And her response to questions has been classy.  At one point she said something to the effect of "I don't even know who I would be at odds with."

522 The whole Carl Cameron story smells to high heaven. Every "incident"/"anecdote" Carl reports seems so out of character for Sarah Palin.

Failing to corroborate the story with Palin herself, he should have been a bit more dispassionate in reporting the story.  His glee was too obvious and so unbecoming and unprofessional.  None of the typical caveats were mentioned (as to un-sourced, non-commented on stories). 

Carl was too quick out of the box, gleefully reporting this crap.  This is not the first time he has been indiscreet in reporting or commenting on events he is covering.  So that should be factored in as well. 

I would recommend to FOX that they sincerely evaluate his job performance to see if he is maintaining the standards to which the network claims it holds.  I also expect the program hosts that permit him to spew this crap to be scrutinized as to whether they appropriately assessed the "scoops" that Carl was reporting.  By not challenging what Carl was reporting un-sourced, undermines their credibility as well.  Greta was the only one to express skepticism.

FOX News should be very embarrassed to have this story reported in the form and tone it was.  Lacking anything other than named sources, they should have been very cautious, and not shopping this shite on every FOX program.  Carl seemed to simply accept these stories at face value and never questioned the motives behind the sources (at least on air he did not).  A critical failing in any journalist worth his salt.

Yesterday, McCain got aborted. He was tagged as an elitist, a country clubber, a tired man, part of the last eight years, someone unable to fight when you had to, and someone who sold out to his captors with nearly no resistance. Too many real people realized McCain just didn't have it in him to take on the special interests bleeding the country dry. Hell, he couldn't even point out Obama's implication in the whole subprime meltdown until forced to. Barry got the vote out of pure rejection of the country club elites.

Palin is someone who resonates with real people and has the winning strategy. There are more like her out there. Rep. Steve King in Iowa is one (and he doesn't hesitate to get in trouble like when he joked about Osama getting his 70 virgins and they all looked like Helan Thomas), and if you look at his re-election stats from last night, he blew away the Democratic contender in a state that went hard blue.

The good news for us is the solution is sitting right there and you nailed it. Eradicate elitism. Get rid of the snobs like Noonan and such. The bad news is this party is owned by them and would rather die than reform. What's it going to be?

I got woken up at 4:30 this morning with a significant business unit risk we're dealing with (I direct risk for a global financial corp).
