"Breaking News Alert:" Robocalls in California/Western States Sought to Depress Republican Vote

Audio.

Gee, isn't it funny the media doesn't ever seem interested in Democratic dirty tricks.

Press release:

NEWS ALERT

Dispicable Voter Suppression Calls Hitting Republican Households in Western States

San Diego, November 4 (6:15 PM) - Dispicable voter suppression calls started hitting Republican households in California around 5 PM PST. The message left on the answering machines of Republican households reads s follows:

"This is a breaking news alert! Early returns show Barack Obama will win Florida, Ohio and Virginia, closing John McCain's only path to the White House. Obama landslide is virtual certainty. Early returns also show Democrats will have large majorities in both houses of congress, regardless of final results from western states like Colorado and California. This was a breaking news alert."

Tony Krvaric, Chairman of the Republican Party of San Diego County called the messages "dispicable", and called for local Democrat leadership to immediately denounce the tactic, and demanded to know who paid for these calls. "Clearly, these calls are designed to depress Republican turnout here in San Diego County."

"We call on all Republicans to get out and vote, and our volunteers will keep calling Republican households until 8 PM, to encourage them to go cast their ballots, regardless of what is going on elsewhere in the country," continued Krvaric.

2 Yes, it is funny, but in a non-funny sort of way, IYKWIM.

Sigh.

Next.

3 if republicans stay home because of that, we do not deserve to win.

4 Ace, weren't there also calls in Lancaster County, PA, saying the polling stations had been moved?

Posted by: Christoph at November 05, 2008 07:11 PM (hawOV)

5 I expect to be seeing lots of stuff like this over the next week or month even.  You know little news blurbs about attacks against Republican GOTV efforts.  Polling locations in Pennsylvania ending up with 99% voter turnout with 90% going to Obama.  All getting nice little mentions in the AP that quickly disappear with no additional national coverage.

Posted by: buzzion at November 05, 2008 07:13 PM (FL/94)

6

And when they trace back from whence the calls originated, I wonder if the lines' owner will be registered as a certain "John Galt"? (Or "Adolfe Hitler".)

Posted by: andycanuck at November 05, 2008 07:16 PM (GGy7k)

7

Yeah, if Repubs had done this, the press would be hand-wringing about the injustice of it all upon the innocents, all too true.

But new is onto something. It is so hard for me to hand-hold the idiots. If someone got this call, and said in an Olyve Oyle voice, "Oh, woe, we cannot win, oh, it's awful", I'd just as soon they stay home.

Let the grown-ups make these decisions.

Posted by: Andrew X at November 05, 2008 07:17 PM (nNZtS)

8 Oh, swell, fresh tears.  This is so embarrassing, but I've been getting them all day.  I just feel like our country has been defiled by what we got last night.

Posted by: CB at November 05, 2008 07:19 PM (9Wv2j)

9 Who on earth would that work on? I mean seriously, who would hear a recording blatantly trying to depress them and go "well gosh, I guess I just won't vote, then!"

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 05, 2008 07:20 PM (0+Ggj)

10 I doubt anything can (or should) be done about this. I mean, sadly they were true.

I get that what they were trying to do, but there was nothing dishonest or misleading about what they said in the calls.

11 The ones in Lancaster, PA, were worse. I don't know if those were "robo" calls.

12 I'm sure someone else has said this somewhere else today, but is dissent still the highest form of patriotism?

i live in ventura county, ca and i got the same call at about 5. surprisingly, it left a number on my caller ID. i called it back, and it said the number "was disconnected or no longer in use".

and a little off topic, i got a recorded message from (i think) rasmussen doing a poll back in september. it asked the normal questions. and then it asked if i thought osama would be found right before the election. nice to know even the mainstream pollsters think like kooks.

18 Unfortunately, dirty tricks are apart of elections.  Both sides do it, always have, always will.  One story I heard was that official looking fliers were being distributed in low-income neighborhoods claiming that due to projected high turnout, their polling place would be open on the 5th.

I think there is much more to be upset about in this election.  But I do agree, if McCain -had- somehow pulled off an upset, we'd be hearing nothing but stories of voter suppression from the MSM.

24 Bah, I'm in south San Diego.  Tony Krvaric himself gave me a robocall, promising to mail me all the stuff I needed to my election day precinct work. He didn't.  He also has a party web page which fails to have any information at all as to precinct locations.

The number one requirement to get lazy borderline voters to the polls is to make it easy for them to know where to go.  If your website doesn't do it, and you don't give your precinct volunteers current voter info, it's not going to happen.

Posted by: wooga at November 05, 2008 07:47 PM (t9sT5)

26 Iblis, along with the media covering for the power bloc they helped ascend, I don't think our side (and I am proud of this) will resort to the tactics the Dems did.

I don't think we will actively and publicly root for defeat.  I don't think we will attempt to push legislation that we know will fail hoping the current administration will get the blame for its results (not that we will be able to push a whole lot now).

We're just going to have to push our ideals in a public forums, make sure our opposing positions are heard loud and clear, and wait for the libs to stumble over their own feet.

My phone rang off the hook yesterday all the way till the polls closed and the first 5 times I bothered to picked it up it was an Obama supporter, I didn't even bother to pick it up after that.. Three times Obama supporters canvassed my neighborhood the week before election, ziltch for the McCain campaign in all the months leading up to the election!

I don't understand what's up with the Va. GOP, but it seems these folks were sittin' on their hands.

This is un-acceptable, Virginia was a battleground state.  TheGOP GOTV sucks, and if this shit ain't fixed, we'll continue to get smoked.

4. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity declared a "clear and present danger" to the United States of America.  AM radio given over to Spanish and "Urban"  stations for their exclusive use.

3.  President Obama declares that his "pimp hand is powdered" in response to a demand by Speaker Pelosi that he approve proposed legislation.  Oprah responds "Tell it, Brother!"  Joy Behar realizes she's a closet submissive.

2.  President Obama appoints Special Envoy to Palestine, opens a diplomatic office

1.  The Bush Doctrine for Afghanistan and Iraq renamed "The Obama Insight" - US policy remains functionally the same.

31 People --  We need to come to some understandings.

The election was stolen.

By the democrats.

Nobody cares.

(Just to clarify, I am and have been for years registered Republican, although I consider myself a small-r republican.)

I don't know how to do better next time, but I suspect having a Platform, with Planks for "Economic Policy", "Foreign Policy", "Domestic Infrastructure Policy" would be more useful than hammering inssessantly on the defects, real and imaginary, of the opposition.

opporesearch or what ever you call it does not play well with folks out here in the middle.

35 The election wasn't stolen.  It was given away.

Like the Godfather Rush said today, Conservatism didn't lose - it wasn't on the ticket.

Our Party allowed this to happen.  They became Democrat Lite.  They increased government spending and scope.

We need, I think, to stop looking at what the Dems did and clean our own house.  We set the stage for a massive flood of new (read: uninformed) voters to come out and hand the reigns over to the left.

Does this, should this, surprise you?  They are what they are.

I find it despicable that Tony Krvaric would whine about it, like this changed the outcome of the election.  He knew about this practice before it occurred.  WTF did he do about it before it occurred?  He knew or should have known it would occur and he did . . . what?  Suck it up boy, you got your clock cleaned and the rest of us will pay the price.

Instead of whining, if you were worth your weight you'd be trying to figure out WTF went wrong and start trying to fix it.

41 So, in 2010 and 2012, Republicans should place robocalls to democrat voters claiming that "Democrats are expecting landslide wins today. Your vote, while important, is not crucial today. Enjoy watching the returns this evening."

45 If Republicans ever want to get control, they have GOT to stop waiting for the dems to do something then reacting to it.

Look at what they did this time, and every time they win big.  The ignored us except to make fun of us when the needed a comic relief.

We need to develop a platform or a program or what ever you want to call it.

And then we need to sell, sell, sell.  Don't ever mention the opponents

We need to learn to make people understand why it is a good idea to buy our line, and to get the hell out of the business of talking only about their program.

And for heavens sake, stop whining.  They ARE schoolyard bullies.

But trying to beat them at their own game just makes loser out of us.

Dispicable Voter Suppression Calls Hitting Republican Households in Western States

Why do I picture Daffy Duck when I read that?

Posted by: pajama momma at November 05, 2008 10:42 PM (f3xJa)

49 They didn't report it because it's normal behavior for Democrats, at least most of them. I've known one or two honest ones (can't do math or learn from history, but honest), but literally most of the Democrats I've known I didn't trust because they regularly lied to me, lied in front of me, or bragged about lying to or cheating others.

I am not kidding.

They also didn't  report it because the septic, syphilitic crack-whores of the MSM approve of the tactic - they do it all the time.

The only, ONLY way to get information is to go and get it yourself, and even that is only partly reliable. The MSM is WORSE than useless if you want information.

Posted by: Merovign at November 05, 2008 11:06 PM (UXoQt)

50 I gotta wonder if this wasn't part of ACORN's overall strategy...

Primary Goal: Suppress right wing vote via discouragement tactics. Knowing polls are sampled based on number of registrations for respective parties, turn in hundreds of thousands of false democrat registrations in order to skew the poll sampling in favor of the left, thereby discouraging right wingers from voting (and perhaps creating prominent eeyores that inadvertently help their cause).

Secondary goal: Flood registration offices with obviously phony registrations (such as Daffy Duck) in order to hide the less obvious registrations, such as those in Ohio where many were registered to a single abandoned house. This seems to have been ACORN's tactic in 2004 when it was discovered that not only had obviously phony registrations been submitted, but there turned out to be more actual votes for Christine Gregoire than there were verifiable voters.

Posted by: G at November 05, 2008 11:23 PM (FAYNo)

51 I was wondering why they were calling me, a registered Republican, and asking me to vote no on Prop 8.  Got Bill Clinton, Magic Johnson and Sam l. Jackson.  I didn't receive any about McCain though.

54 Larry Sheldon: will you please quit whining about "stolen elections?"

No, really. You do know you sound exactly like demented Democrats who kept repeating "selected, not elected" for years after the 2000 elections, don't you?

I suppose I'll have to keep repeating this for the slow learners; I have regularly -over the past eight years-told liberals what I'm now telling you: you LOST. Get over it.

As Ed Morrissey has explained, Obama beat Dubya's 2004 performance by 400k voters: 62.443 million votes. Highest in history now, I believe. McCain gained only 55.386 million. Do the math, and (as Ed pointed out) and you'll see that 3.24 million fewer voters cast their votes.

Not enough voters turned out for McCain. Winning by nearly seven million votes is not "stealing" an election by any stretch of the imagination. Wasn't that the title of a Hugh Hewitt book, something like "if it's not close, they can't call it cheating?"
