The Age of Plenty Begins: Stocks Fall Nearly 500 Points/5% on Obama Win

I seem to remember Bush being blamed for the market selling off when he would speak during the day.

But I'm sure the rules are different for The One.

It's All Part of the Plan... Sandy Burger:

The Dow Jones drop isn't bad news; Obama just lowered the price of stocks so the little guy has a chance to afford some, too.

Thanks, Barack!

Restarted Thread: The other attempt at a humor thread got diverted with further recriminations and musings. So let's try it anew with this one:

Embrace the New Age of Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Work!

After the 2006 debacle, we collectively embraced the new age of Pelosi/Reid, and all the wonderments it would bring.

Well, I think we have a whole lot more to look forward to, now.

I personally am thankful for all the increased economic activity and new jobs that will flow from a basic cost of enterprise -- energy -- skyrocketing in price, as Obama guaranteed.

That's how it works, right? If a basic cost of doing business soars, everyone sells even more product, hires more workers, and makes more money, right?

Verily, that has been the history of mankind itself -- as energy costs have risen, wealth has risen with it.

So thanks Obama! I didn't know the key to economic plenty was simply skyrocketing the costs of essential components of industry! If only we had known that previously, we could have artificially jacked up the costs of labor and commodities to the heavens (like Russia did)!

(Thanks to Tushar for suggesting the thread.)

All those unpatriotic investors and industrialists are attempting to avoid glorious taxation under the big O! How dare they insist to save and spend their own capital as they please! If all the wealth were redistributed there would be no need for such dangerous and criminal enterprises as investments in the stockmarket, which only serve to impede the limitless intellect of our benefactors in the peoples' party from benevolently dispensing welfare, to all of us whom are now equally impoverished under the great fairness of the almighty one's creed.

24 Last time I looked Bush is still the president for a couple more months. But don't let facts get in the way.

Last time I looked, even the Associated Press notes that the market is weighing the upcoming Obama presidency in its decisions. Last time I looked, investors make decisions based on the future -- not the present. If they think things are going to get better soon, they hold. If they think things are going to get bad, they dump. Last time I looked, investors don't smile at the prospect of a capital gains tax increase and therefore will look to make their money now by selling off shares.

You guys don't like crap getting blamed on Obama when he's not even president? Bush got blamed when lefties got divorced (literally). Payback's a mean fucker, ain't it?

4) Take credit for it all

There is no greater cause and effect on what the free market thinks of a president then the day after an election

in 2004  up flat:  0%

in 1996 ip 100pts  about 2%

in 1992 down 20pts  about 1%

in 1988 flat

in 1984 up 14pts or about 1.5%

in 1980  flat.

This is the worse reaction to an election by the markets in the last 30 years.  Most day's after is like business as usally.  No sell offs.  Sometimes you get a small rally.  Today was an massive in your face NO THANK YOU form the market.  HISTORIC reaction.  Not seen ever.

Posted by: thomas at November 05, 2008 06:15 PM (KOLiq)

42 Really good news?  Exelon stock is down 4% on the news that it is still mulling it's buy of NRG.  NRG is an energy producing entity.  It produces energy through COAL fired plants.  Exelon still has six coal fired energy plants IIRC, possibly more.  It was looking to expand it's most profitable leg of the energy business.  The most profitable being the energy production that is a deregulated market as opposed to their other division in the utilities that is highly regulated (at least for now).

I imagine they got the big ol' surprise when Obama's "bankrupt anyone with coal plants" interview came out.  Now Exelon is thinking that buying NRG and adding to their energy production division is probably not a good idea.  More specifically since coal also doubled in cost over the last year and natural gas went down the operation is already costly without Obama's energy plans.  Now, to expand their business, Exelon is going to have to find some natural gas fired plants to buy (probably be difficult, all things considered) or they are going to have to build them.  a big outlay in cash they can't afford.

Welcome to the world of Obamanomics, Exelon.  thanks for supporting this asshole.  HOpe you can stay in business and not get bought out by Warren Buffet.

Pardon, my schadenfreud is showing.

Thor? - Buy a clue. Stock rises and falls on the news of the day. Bush didn't make any news today (he hasn't made news in over a year). Today's news was all about the incoming administration, and the financialists starting to ponder all that the new Bubba has mentioned he's got in mind to do for to them. And some really bad news on the international front (rocket exchange in Israel, Russia making threats on the Polish border, and bad news from the Asian & Euro-markets with the news).

So just own it. We've owned it for a frickin' weary edge. Now its your turn. Democrats created the frickin' mess (with Republican complicity, so don't think I'm giving our idiots a frickin' pass here ...but your idiots aren't just complicit in the mortgage crisis, they're the authors of the mess that Bush inherited, and that O' is gonna be inheriting).

Of course, I know that you know this. And that you can't help being a ...well, between the content of what you write between here and on PW, I don't want to know what you can't help being.

Regardless, you are going to get a taste of just how frustrated we've been with the morons we've been electing (and the lies we've put up with). And you ain't gonna enjoy it any more than we have.

The difference? - Obama, at least, is pretty good at reading a teleprompter (Bush absolutely sucked at public speaking: he got it right about three times ..."three" and I can only think of one off-hand). He might not be saying much (we'll see), but at least he says it articulately. Faint comfort.

But what you're not going to be able to hide behind is the typical Rethuglican Rhetoric Hackery you've delighted in. Dude! The Dem's own Washington beginning in January. They have no excuses, nothing to hide behind. January? - It started today.

And you are going to find out just how it feels when your morons end up proving themselves feckless incompetent tools AND embarassing.

Here. I'll throw you a bone: I - we all - hope O' does okay. He's enough of a cipher that "who knows?"

But your Congress? We've already had two years to become familiar with them ...and the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae fiasco is just a mere hint of what we're gonna see.

You sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind. You got what you wanted. Enjoy it.

52 The AP is euphemistically referring to it as "cashing in" on the Obama win.  Had McCain won, the headlines would have read "crashing down".

Everyone is talking about McCain's generous concession speech.
While McCain may, personally, feel good about the tenor of his campaign, we who were counting on him cannot possibly feel good about the prospects of the socialistic governance we are left with as a result.

While McCain has my greatest respect as a true American hero, he should not be emulated.  He squandered countless opportunities to strike back at Obama's distortions and untruths about the economy, pulling his punches in the name of bipartisanship that was neither reciprocated nor rewarded by voters.

McCain apparently never learned from his close friend, Ronald Reagan, that you can wage a tough fight with integrity and humor as long as you honor your principles by speaking the truth.  Too often McCain refused to lay the blame of the economic crisis where it belonged.  He instead shaded the truth by blaming it on "greedy Wall Street fat cats".  He knew this was not the entire truth because he, personally, had sponsored and fought for the legislation that would have prevented the subprime crisis.  Blaming Congressional Democrats is not bipartisan, however, and vilifying the rich has greater appeal to populist voters.  Ronald Reagan never had a problem laying the blame on Government because he knew that the truth was on his side.

I pray that I'm proven wrong, but I get the impression that Obama is not exactly going to be aggressive in defending our safety, liberties, and interests abroad.  Had McCain fought harder by speaking the entire truth, perhaps ruffling a few feathers of liberal friends in the process, America would have been stronger as a result.

God will get us through it, however.  There must be a bigger purpose behind all of this.

And today, people take their "gains"? To the tune of a 486.01 point plunge? That's not taking gains, that's cashing out. Folks may see a buying opportunity tomorrow, the market may rally. We'll see. And if they were taking gains, which gains were they taking, exactly? The money Obama magically created by being elected?

Gee. Who could have possibly seen that coming. Even athletes, the generally dumb class of our sophisticated society, understand the upcoming Obama administration. Those with "obscenely elevated incomes," that very group The One has determined needs to share more of their wealth because it's, well, fair, will be adjusting accordingly. Will there be some sort of notification in the mail confirming any change in our damnation status?

The path the Republicans should take is to be the most honest, the most concerned about America party on the planet.  No more earmarks and make sure any the Dems get are published.  No more scandals of any type.  They need to have their own journalists who hunt and dig and pry, published online and disseminated with the assistance of the bloggers.  We have a PR problem we need to fix and a communication problem as well.  But all of it has to be absolutely true, no lies, no exaggeration, no hackery.  We do this the individual politicians can have their own personal beliefs in religion, pornography, abortion, whatever; but everyone will know "they are honest".  And this will be an enormous difference vs the Dems, this can be like night and day difference.  And it only takes a bit of thought to see that the Dems will soon be in trouble for their flaunting of the law.   We need to re-educate America about history, ethics, democracy, science, the rule of law. Do this and we will make the Dems look like the thugs and thieves they are.

The market is back to where it was last Friday. It's a bear market, trading sideways. Nothing, absolutely nothing, has changed since Friday except an election occurred. So? An Obama win was already at least partly priced into the market. Traders can read polls. No trader with any real savvy believes what a campaign says about where they are in polls. Libor rates were down yesterday to the lowest they have been in 5 months. The market was up. The market wants to believe rates will continue to fall, and deleveraging will continue. But transparency is still not there for many of the banks who bought and sold nothing but pure speculation out of greed. (Not that there is anything wrong with greed.)

If Teh One and the Dems do what they have plainly said they intend to do, it will not get better for a long time. Bear market rallies come and go,but GDP is a constant. Attempts by a Dem congress to glom onto more money for the lower classes by raising taxes, letting the Bush tax cuts expire, etc. will result in an even poorer business climate. And a lower market. The Laffer Curve isn't bullshit, it's real.

Hey, the Democrats broke it. Now they own it.

Was it Betty Davis who said: Fasten your seatbelts, its going to be a bumpy ride?

No one cares about earmarks. Ask McCain. Earmarks are a pittance. Raising the capital gains tax, cutting defense 25% to 30%, taxing 401ks, now there is some shit to hit Dems with in a campaign.

Someone was bitching about focusing on earmarks in another thread but new comment thingy was too laggy to bother replying.

Here's the thing with earmarks - congressmen who exist to do nothing but porkbarrell them don't care about conservative policies.

Earmarks are small potatoes. Which is why they haven't enamored me of McCain all that much. Most spending isn't earmarks. Big policy issues are much more important then earmarks.

You can't have congressmen who earmark all day long, and vote against McCain Feingold and Medicaid and the Bailout and Amnesty. If you vote against these things, you are a pariah and you don't get any earmarks.

If you piss off democrats, you don't get any earmarks. If you piss off anyone, you can't really get earmarks, because they'll try to obstruct you. Especially if you piss of dems in a dem congress. John Murtha is in charge of damn near all the earmarks. If he says 'suck my cock', you say 'work the shaft or the balls?' or you don't get ANY fucking earmarks at all. Pork barrelling is a quid-pro-quo business. You have to go along to get along. When you vote for something you shouldn't be voting for, when you break your own parties fillibuster, you get payed for it in earmarks.

So yeah, earmarks are a big deal. Not in and of themselves... they are a symptom of the problem.

We need to remove earmarks not because they're such a tremendous thing, we need to remove them so dipshit republicans don't sell their fucking votes away for them.

But god forbid we'd have politicians that voted for or against a bill based on whether or not they thought it was a good bill, rather then whether or not they're allowed to make the new library buy all it's overpriced concrete from their brother-in-law.

103 I'm now deleriously happy. The rising waters of global warming have begun to ebb. No one else will be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Ever. Osama will come out of his caves and willingly surrender. Big corporations will open their vaults, take out the bags of money they have hidden there and start handing it out to the poor and downtrodden. All crime will stop...cops will be retrained as community organizers. Every nation on earth will call the United States blessed. My car will never need to be refueled again (it will run on Hope). Racism? What's that?...That's all over. The child will put his hand in the den of the asp. The lion shall lie down with the lamb. We will beat our swords into plowshares. We shall need the sun and the moon no more, for our Lord Obama shall be our light.

But if Obama doesn't deliver on the Messiah shit, he's going to be a one-termer that will make Carter look like a fucking genius. If he doesn't deliver on it by 2010, and if the Republicans come out with a short list of achievable, measurable, realistic, popular and conservative goals, 1994 is going to look like a country picnic to the left. If the Messiah shit doesn't happen and instead things go badly? Katie bar the doors.
