Coleman Falls Behind by 900 300 Votes with 99% Precincts Reporting
Now Coleman's Up by Over 2000 Votes
3000+ Votes

Update: Numbers here. We may keep this one. Update: Now we're just barely losing.

Yet Another Update: With even more than 99% in, Coleman's now up by 2000+. I think he wins this one.

Also, oddly, Ted Stevens may win. Permitting Palin to appoint his successor.

Maybe Todd Palin. He can set up the house in DC for her.

...

Well, it looks like things aren't finished yet. As of 12:30 CST, Coleman and Franken are within 7,000 votes of each other, with Coleman ahead and 81% of precincts reporting.

I may have spoken too soon. Don't blame the cobloggers for that one, I called it early and Coleman has made a comeback. Will call it for good in the morning.

Also still waiting on the final results: Felon Ted Stevens, who may just squeak by so that Palin can appoint a replacement until a special election can be called. Again, we'll see where it's at in the morning.

Earlier posts below:
We're calling it. Al Franken is now a senator of these United States.

Despair.

Late Night Update: The commenters are telling me that Coleman could still win. We'll see in the morning. I've got a whole 'nother bottle to get through between here and there.

Original Post:
Will the king of douchebags pull it out? If the exits are accurate, I'd say so.

Right now, it's

Franken 46%
Coleman 38%

With a mere 3% of precincts reporting.

Update: Still too close to call with 9% reporting, though Franken is still up. AOSHQ decision desk is waiting for the Twin City 'burbs to finish reporting and Duluth.

64 No, Franken's got this rapped up... there aren't enough outstanding votes in the red counties for Coleman to overcome what Franken will get in St. Louis.

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 02:53 AM (pGdsh)

65 It all depends on what Hennepin county precincts are still out. If they already counted Minneapolis, the suburbs should hold it for Coleman. After all, Paulsen won.

Posted by: Jeff_McAwesome at November 05, 2008 02:57 AM (G07ST)

66 Ouch, and Hannepin (between St. Paul and Minneapolis) will give Franken another 30-35k votes.

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 02:57 AM (pGdsh)

67 Franken will not win in Minnesota.

The (Red) Star Tribune has a demographic map available at its web site.

Franken voters are generally in the Metro area (inner cities of Mpls and St. Paul). St. Paul's votes are already tabulated at 100%. The unaccounted votes from Minneapolis are mainly in the suburbs and Coleman is holding firm there.

The other foci for Franken votes are in the Arrowhead area (Duluth and surrounding areas). Most of the votes are included at this point, and its a fairly sparse area.

I book Coleman in a squeeker.

119 mesa, damn... you're right. I didn't realize that the CNN numbers were so far off.

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 03:54 AM (pGdsh)

120 Hennepin has a lot of Republican precincts, so does Duluth, it depends where these votes are from, hopefully suburban not inner city.

Posted by: jason at November 05, 2008 03:55 AM (SgOkM)

121 Hmm, it would be strange for the SOS to release the numbers to the media before putting them on their site -- but those numbers are newer.

Posted by: mesablue at November 05, 2008 03:56 AM (5yNaE)

122 Ok, ABC is now showing Franken up 1000 with 96% in. I think they are just pulling these numbers out of their asses.

126 mesa, CNN has consistently shown a Coleman lead of 80 votes to a few hundred votes recently, while you were quoting numbers from SOS that were 10k+.  I'm not sure what's up... maybe CNN has some absentee numbers in there or something?

130 onteria, its not just a time difference... at 94% reporting they were giving compeltely different numbers.... look up the thread a bit and you'll see me "correcting" mesa, who was using SOS numbers.

Fox has the same nums that CNN has.

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 04:03 AM (pGdsh)

131 There have been no problems with updates on the MN SOS site, especially at this time of night.

The only way CNN can be beating them to the punch is to have someone standing there, which is a very common.  However, their splits have been very different.

142 OK, that's not it.... CNN has higher numbers.  Who knows...

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 04:09 AM (pGdsh)

143 It looks like the disparity is coming from St. Louis County. SOS has both Franken and Coleman with lower totals than the CNN et al numbers. Not sure why that would be.

Why in hell is anyone worried about Al Franken winning? Why in hell doesn't everyone here want him to win? He will be the gift that keeps on giving for six years straight. What a freakin' blessing!

1. Obama wins the Dem nomination.

2. Yosemite Sam wins the GOP nomination.

3. Lindsey "tell the bigots to shut up" wins the GOP nomination in SC.

4. "Racist," "redneck" Murtha wins.

5. Republican idiots in Alaska vote to re-renominate crooked Ted Stevens - and he might actually win.

6. Franken wins.

7 William Jefferson gets re-elected.

8. Bitter clingy Obama wins, including in Pennsylvania.

9. On a local note (for me) 4 GOP legislators in Utah who voted for vouchers - you know: let YOU decide how YOUR money will be spent to educate YOUR kids - lost re-election because of their support for the bill - 3 of them in the GOP primary.

Batshit crazy, indeed. We're all fucked.

Posted by: DaveS at November 05, 2008 04:17 AM (pGdsh)

155 Yeah, but St. Louis is mostly Iron range, which is traditionally Dem.

SOS shows St. Louis 34600 vs 21300 Franken.

Posted by: Jeff_McAwesome at November 05, 2008 04:18 AM (G07ST)

156 CNN lead now exactly 1k votes....96^%....one difference could be if CNN is reporting the percentage of the vote total while SOS has the precinct percentage, they are often not the same....in other words if there are 4% of precincts out, that is not necessarily 4% of the vote.

Posted by: jason at November 05, 2008 04:19 AM (SgOkM)

157 Jeff, if the StL trend holds, though, that's just another ~7000 for Franken in that last 30%..

Subdivision 1.Determination of proper number.

The election judges shall determine the number of ballots to be counted by adding the number of return envelopes from accepted absentee ballots to the number of signed voter's certificates, or to the number of names entered in the election register. The election judges shall then remove all the ballots from the box. Without considering how the ballots are marked, the election judges shall ascertain that each ballot is separate and shall count them to determine whether the number of ballots in the box corresponds with the number of ballots to be counted.

A few points here:

Alaska passed a referendum that prohibits the governor from appointing someone to fill a vacancy. That being said, there is debate that this is in violation of the  17th Amendment.

As for the 60 vote Senate, the Dems do not need 60 votes. There are 3 or 4 Republicans that vote Dem every time, there are 2 independents who vote Dem every time. And finally there are 3 or 4 more Republicans that vote Dem about every other time.

If the Dems get 54 or 55 they have it sewed up, and it looks like they have that.

247 duh

it's ok when is a liberal cause:

Police around the Coachella Valley responded to calls Tuesday of Proposition 8 opponents who got too close to polling places as part of last-ditch efforts to persuade voters to vote no on the measure, which sought to ban gay marriage in California.

Two men got into a confrontation with Salvation Army workers outside the Cathedral City office, along Landau Boulevard, the site of a polling place.

“This is the second time and the second location we had to deal with these two gentlemen,” Cathedral City Police Sgt. Dave Hatfield said, referring to an earlier incident at the Doral Desert Princess Resort.

One of the men, Cathedral City resident Matthew Lynn, said he arrived at the hotel when police did and that he was not bothering voters outside the Salvation Army office.

He alleged he and his father were encouraging people to vote and doing little more than asking if people were familiar with Proposition 8.

“There was no discussion of the issue; it's just, ‘Hey, we hope you vote no,'” Lynn said.

348 Sarah should take Stevens' Senate seat. It would give her the opportunity to develop some Beltway gravitas in anticipation of 2012. Her Lt. Gov. seems like a good guy and would surely win a special election to the governorship.

Sarah is too big for Alaska now.

349 I'd say that's Alaska giving the finger to Lower 48 judges and juries.

We do that almost daily anyway.

350 Well.

I suggested going person to person to avoid internet snooping/censoring software - like gu gull sold to China  & either, I'm insane or tonight just isn't a good night for ideas, cause it didn't seem to track with any other commenter.

So some less insane possibilities:
Money for lawyers.
Conservative lawyers working pro bono.
Buy Ace his own server.
Wire a private internet.
Fund citizen journalism.
Buy Rush his own radio station.
Buy a station in Mexico, little FCC interference.

Tomorrow, I start calling congress critters re: foreign donations into FPoBA's campaign funds.

351 Coleman is up 600+.

How many precincts are in?

Posted by: Bart at November 05, 2008 07:25 AM (t9PoL)

352 Now
Coleman 1210247 Franken 1209124 2419371 50% 50%
1123
Coleman is maintaining a lead of 1123 votes in 4121/4130 districts.  There's about 5300 votes around there to be counted if my district-vote ratio is correct.

353

Looks like Coleman by 762 per the final AP count.

I'll take what I can get.

You assholes have no imagination. 6 years of Al Franken would've been the gaffe that keeps on gaffeing. Never look a gift donkey in the mouth.

And affirmative action is dead in Nebraska and, apparently, Colorado. But who are these assholes, 42% and 50%, who voted FOR it???

These shall be remembered as the batshit crazy elections, for so many reasons.

Posted by: Bubba at November 05, 2008 11:32 AM (Oi0e7)

355 Unfortunately the gift that would keep on giving would also keep voting.....
