| Very Odd Red State Ad Buy This AM - [Cuffy Meigs]Yours truly lives in the deepest of deep red states, so you could imagine my surprise when I saw this ad playing during the first commercial break of NBC's Today Show: As it was interspersed among local yokel campaign ads for judges and sheriffs, it was surely a local market buy. And it was the first time I'd ever seen that ad on real TV, not YouTube. Alabama is kinda sorta a conservative bastion --- really, believe it --- and not considered a battleground state. So why would the GOP Trust PAC waste money running it here of all places ... on Election Day morning? The obvious answer from the MSM is, well, obvious: Stir up the racist peckerwoods! Get 'em in a beserker, lynchin', truck-draggin', cousin-pokin' votin' frenzy! Actually it's not that exciting. This Congressional district is up for grabs with a Blue Dog Democrat retiring after 16 years in the seat. Before him, one Republican since Reconstruction (ummm, during Reconstruction), nothing but Dems since. So the GOP Trust is placing a big bet on Rev. Wright causing some serious down-ticket collateral damage. Is this interesting ad buy happening in other non-battleground red states today? (more boring crap about my pissant Congressional race at Perfunction)Comments1
I saw this ad in NY the other night.

I have been seeing this add in deep blue MD, too. Must be a national buy.

They've been running it here in Texas all weekend.

I've seen this add a bunch of times here in central PA. It ran quite a bit during the Steelers-Skins game last night.
Every time I wen out to get a beer, I could hear Wright yelling "God Damn America!". Posted by: forest at November 04, 2008 10:49 AM (cjFle) 5
On the other hand, this ad buy is the flipside of Sean Malstrom's analysis that the 2004 blue states are the battleground areas, so who knows?
However, from the comments above, it just seems like a national buy. Posted by: Christoph at November 04, 2008 10:51 AM (hawOV) 6

I think it will help the downtickets and maybe the popular vote. But, I think that they probably had more money than they could spend ($8mm per dick morris, more than all of O's informercials) so they just bought every open slot in America. I've seen it dozens of times in TX

I'm in a Tampa 'burb and I was forced to listen to the radio all day yesterday (Q105, classic rock, 30's-50's demographic) and it was wall to wall Obama ads and nary a McCain ad. I believe FL is safe McCain, regardless of the polls, and Obama _needs_ FL or OH to win and he knows it, so he's casting about for wild-card states to fill in for losing PA & VA, which I have to believe he will lose.
He sure is spending a lot of money, but you have to think a saturation point has been reached and he might just be annoying people now. Posted by: ms. docweasel at November 04, 2008 10:54 AM (SOSlE) 11

I've been wondering why they picked the Wright issue for the final push.
Last night, I was watching an election special on PBS, gave a good rundown of the candidates and the path to election, ending with the VP picks, Apparently, when the Wright controversy broke during the primaries, Hillary surged ahead by 9 points. This was right after Obama's big win in Iowa. Hope it works again. Posted by: mpur at November 04, 2008 10:56 AM (BotaL) 16

I haven't seen the ad on TV (I'm in NY though) I just got back from voting. I have no idea what, if anything, this means, but they already have more votes registered there today then they usually get all day.
While I think a McCain electoral victory is a possibility, if he does manage it, I think its very likely we might see a repeat of 2000, where he wins the popular vote total - Which is one of the reasons I think Obama has been working the GOTV so hard even in safe states, they want to be able to scream 'stolen election' even if they lose. The MSM may call Wright irrelevant and old news, but I think it's a good idea to throw him up in the faces of Americans last minute. The rage & hatred he feels for white America is so disturbing and jolting to listen to. Obama made his bed with this man for 20 years. ANY OTHER candidate would've been burned alive at the stake had they had the same associations Obama has had. It's never old news to show this. If it only helps down ticket, then great. But if it gives others pause before they pull the lever for The One...all the better. Wright is one sick mofo. Posted by: Twinks at November 04, 2008 11:04 AM (7QUxD) 25

Got it here in Texas panhandle - no congress races close here - I think they are trying to maximize popular vote turn out and this might be why.... Final battleground poll 49-44 Obama - BUT- when they factor in undecideds it's 50.2 - 48.3 Obama, so they see undecideds going 4 to 1 McCain - that puts this puppy close and it's all about trurn out! Yep, same crap here in NC. Sen. Dole's 'Godless American' ad too. The GOP has sold its sole to scare people into voting for them. McCain is a good man; but, he's not the President we need - no vision and no plan for the future. Fortunately, the policies of Obama and the Democrats will cause great pain for the United States too. Good! Maybe then the voters will be fed up with this entrenched two-party system. Throw out the incumbents and replace them real public-servants. Our country is strong enough to survive 4 years of an Obama administration.

I saw this ad yesterday in upstate NY for the first time, on a Syracuse channel. But the oddest thing : "God Damn" was partly bleeped out, — in such a way that it came across as kind of "G(bleep) (bleep)m America." Someone who already knew what Wright was saying would easily "fill in the audio blanks," but one who did not might easlily be left scratching his head. It's hard to imagine that this was done at the behest of the PAC that paid for it — presumably it was done editorially by the station running it. Sort of lessens the impact, don't you think? I voted. 99 ballots cast when I went in, 3 bad ballots. 3% error rate. That's what I overheard at my polling place. I was interrupted by a lawyer from the States Attorneys Office. Took

were going.

Guys, this ad was bought by GOP Trust, which is a 527. The group has nothing to do with the Republican party. They got started with the ad too late, then raised too money for the slots available in battleground states. Being ethical people who despise Oprahbama, they want to run the ad somewhere it will help Republicans. The only slots at this late date are in strange places like Mass., California and Texas.
It has zip to do with the campaign or its internals. Posted by: Fresh Air at November 04, 2008 11:48 AM (SXkkC) 70

It was bleeped out here in Alabama, too (guess they didn't want to outright kill my grandma on the spot when she heard it for the first time).
