| Five Reasons Obama LostI'm not living in that past tense yet, but I do love their reasons. I'll call it "five reasons Obama oughta lose". One nit. There are many Republicans who still remember Democrats stealing the 1960 election with voter fraud in Chicago and Mayor Daley’s expert campaigning in cemeteries to deliver the zombie vote for Kennedy.Hey! I remember reading about it. All seriousness aside, I don't think it's all that well known. 2000 and 2004 nonsense fresh enough though. Good read. Hope they're right. tip: Nice Deb Their map projection.. ![]() Looking for explanations of what went wrong, Wirthlin believes that the other pollsters erred by estimating that there would be more Democrats in the final body of voters than there turned out to be.What a shock. Here are the pollsters responding to the one pollster who got it closer to right. This occurs in the context of a debate -- did pollsters have it wrong all along, or did they have it right, but Reagan suddenly got a ten point lead in the 48 hours before the election they didn't poll? Mitofsky and other pollsters sought to "prove" the latter -- the didn't want to admit they were simply wrong all along. Here is he responding to one pollster who got it closer to right ... Mitofsky disagrees strenuously with the criticisms. Says he: "I can't buy their approach to making estimates from data. I'm not prepared to throw out our techniques just because one poll produced a different number. In fact, if we were doing this all again, I would not change a single thing except to poll the last two days of the campaign. To believe their figures, too many other people have to be wrong."Kinda says it all. Mitofsky wouldn't change anything... because hey, they couldn't all have been wrong, could they? More: Growing Optimism? So it is claimed. Comments1

Thanks Deb, I love this part:
We believe MSNBC will not be in business in 5 years, and that several newspapers, like the LA Times, will either fold or become online-only, since the media’s credibility can never recover. Shameless. Disgusting. Vile, Sycophantic. Hero-worshipping. Fawning. GREAT CNN POST - READ THE GORE PART:
With only hours remaining until most voters head to the polls, the Illinois senator holds a 7 point lead over McCain, 51-44 percent, in the latest CNN poll of polls. That gap that has been remarkably steady since the beginning of October. (In the last 30 days, Obama's largest lead in the CNN poll of polls has been 9 points; the lowest has been is 6.) Election Center: Check out the poll of poll trends But McCain can take comfort in (and Democrats can still worry over) the fact Al Gore faced a similar 7-point gap in polls taken immediately before the 2000 presidential election. The former vice president ultimately won the popular vote, though he narrowly lost the Electoral College to President Bush. Posted by: watchdog at November 04, 2008 12:32 AM (yCbBv) 37

To be fair, the controversy was about Cook County's 450,000 vote margin and Texas (oddly enough), where Kennedy won by 50,000 or so.
But most largely focus on the Illinois thing. People just ignore Texas. It's like we're big and dumb or something. Posted by: Dave in Texas at November 04, 2008 12:35 AM (eiOZw) 40

CNN: But McCain can take comfort in (and Democrats can still worry over) the fact Al Gore faced a similar 7-point gap in polls taken immediately before the 2000 presidential election. Editor, I'm not laughing at your hopes for Washington state. I've received 3 robocalls for Democrats in the last 3 days, tonight was special I got a "Hi this is Barack Obama" robo call. Why the heck are they wasting effort robocalling that much in the Seattle area? And these were calls for President, not about the Governor's race (for which I got a separate friendly robo call from Maria Cantwell) Also, the number of McCain-Palin signs has exploded in the last few days, even hand made ones, in my neighborhood. They are everywhere. Sure Washington will probably still go blue, it always does, but I think McCain will make a decent showing here. I (and my senior citizen parents that live with me) are all registered Republicans in Northeast PA. We have been receiving all sorts of robo-calls the last 2 weeks (we live in the hotly contested 10th Congressional District). They have all been Republican calls, with the exception of two we got today - Chris Carney and Barack Obama. My father quickly dumped the Carney call and told the Barack call that hell would freeze over before he'd vote for him. I laughed for quite a long time on that one as my Dad is about as apolitical as anyone I have ever met, but this election has him riled. He has always voted Republican, but is quiet about it. This year, he got a bunch of Republican signs for the yard and we are now plastered all across front lawn. We will win!!! Posted by: pforeman at November 04, 2008 01:01 AM (S7Xpi) 63

Actually I would say they are about right except I would give McCain Colorado and say the final electoral vote will be McCain 295 Obama 243.
They missed one reason for Obama's loss, the main one. It is race but it is because he injected it into the race. Jesse Jackson worked hard in the 80's to change the Dem Primary rules figuring if he could get to South Carolina with a viable chance a black man could win from there out. He never got there but Obama did. He injected race into the election with his "bamboozled" and "hoodwinked" comments. It won him South Carolina and the nomination and he has been milking it to turn out the black vote ever since. It will cost him the general election though. He will lose because of race but not because he is black but because he reminds people of it whenever possible. People won't be voting against him because they are racist. Instead they will because they are tired of being "racists". They are tired of it being part of every coversation, tv show and school lesson. Liberal whites are voting for Obama because they think he is post racial, every other non black will vote against him because they know he isn't. If there every is a Black President who wins he won't recive a majoirty of the black vote when he does. People are perfectly ready and willing to vote for a black candidate for president but they won't for the Black candidate. Posted by: Rocks at November 04, 2008 01:15 AM (7rbe9) 68

It makes us the laughingstock of the developed world, of course most the readers of this thread don't actually care what the rest of the developed world thinks. Maybe because we're far, far more developed than they are. And we're the only one of those "developed nations" that actually has, you know, real freedom and shit. Oh, and a vastly superior standard of living. And an invincible military. And more economic mobility than any other people anywhere at any time in all of human history. And an "underclass" that would be at worst solidly middle class anywhere else on the planet and whose primary health problem is obesity. It's just a lot of little things I guess. So no -- I don't give a shit what the rest of the world thinks of us, just like Michael Phelps doesn't give a shit what Michael Moore thinks of his backstroke. The rest of the "developed world" should be more worried about what we think of them, because without American economic and military support, they are well and truly fucked. Note on the map that McCain/Palin still win with 273 even without VA. I just got home from the McCain rally in Henderson, NV tonight. McCain was awesome, lots of opportunities to boo Harry Reid and Barney Frank (yes, he sure as hell named names). His finish was even longer and stronger than the one from the GOP convention. And he drew a few thousand more than Palin did at the same arena last week. And it was dark and getting cold for the Vegas area. Lieberman was here with him, along with Graham and Mel Martinez. I was nice and clapped for Martinez because McCain said he came from Cuba with nothing and is the example of the American Dream. Lieberman was the only other one who spoke, and he was great. I've been playing around on 270toWin.com tonight. If you shift the poll results by 5 %-points toward McCain (i.e. turn all their toss-up states red and all their leaning-blue states into toss-ups), that's probably a lot closer to the true state of the race. And it gives McCain the edge in likely EVs, albeit with a lot more EVs in play than before. More to my point, it makes the map projection in the original post look quite likely. And even if Pennsylvania breaks for Obama, that would put him over the top by just three EVs, meaning McCain would have to flip just one of the remaining Obama-leaning battleground states (MI, WI, MN, CO, NM) to win anyway.

Oh, and one more: After the win and before the inauguration, JFK went to FLA to vacation and pick his Cabinet. He had trouble with the various demands from people he asked. He started complaining about it to his father and brother. His father replied, "Jack, you don't have to take the job if you don't want it. They're still counting votes in Chicago." I'm in Virginia, and i heard from my sister in law who lives in the backdoor of Obama's last campaign stop at the Prince William VA Fairgrounds. They were extremely annoyed by the loud music non stop. Started in the afternoon about 4pm, and destroyed the evening. Loud music on continious loop play at 10:20 at night, when thier kids could not sleep. They wanted to, but the insane noise level prevented that. They could open a window and you could hear the crap loud as hell on the cell phone. And then there was the swarming police and secret service driving in that neighborhood. Obama had not even gotten there yet. And they are used to loud music when the fair or events come to town. Thier neighbors, who are democrats, said they too are ticked off with this crap and are going to vote McCain Palin. For some peace and quiet. My brother in law lives 10 blocks further away, and they had parking problems as well as the same crappy noise. The fans seemed to be from other parts of VA, not locals. He mentioned seeing a significant number of out of state plates in his neghborhood. Its only a 2 mile circle, a neighborhood, but every increment, every voter bloc Body Odor pisses off with his ego, is one more step in our direction. Bad news from Florida, according to Survey USA...
Does Florida 'Early Bird Special' Give Obama So Many Seats in the Restaurant That McCain People Can't Get a Table? 24 hours until votes are counted in Florida, the state's 27 Electoral Votes may be within reach of Barack Obama, according to SurveyUSA's final pre-election tracking poll. Obama leads 3:2 among those who tell SurveyUSA they have already voted. McCain leads 3:2 among those who have not yet voted. How big is each group? That depends on how many voters show up on Election Day. In SurveyUSA's stew, the mix is 58% early voters, 42% same-day voters, which, when combined, results in Florida voting Obama 50%, McCain 47% -- inside the margin of sampling error, but enough of an edge for Obama to be favored, clearly. If the number of same-day voters equals the number of early voters, the contest is a tie. If the number of same-day voters exceeds the number of early voters, McCain wins. In the past 10 days, polls in Florida conducted by Quinnipiac University, the Associated Press, Public Policy Polling and now SurveyUSA show Obama ahead in early voting; a poll by the Los Angeles Times shows McCain ahead in early voting; and a poll by the St. Petersburg Times shows the two candidates tied in early voting. How much of a head-start Obama has going into Election Day will be critical to determining who carries the state and, in some scenarios, who wins the White House. 800 adults interviewed 10/31/08 through 11/03/08 yielded 742 registered voters and 691 likely voters. Research sponsored by WFLA-TV Tampa, WFOR-TV Miami, WKRG-TV Pensacola, and WFTX-TV Ft Myers. Posted by: Greg at November 04, 2008 02:04 AM (j97+Q) 85

how sweet of greg to keep cutting and pasting for us though. Obama apparently was booed in JAX when he couldn't remember he wasn't in Ohio? McCain at age 72 was FIRED UP tonight in Henderson. He certainly knew what state he was in, and it was his 6th rally of the day! Posted by: funky chicken at November 04, 2008 02:21 AM (xyyHG) 90
Public Policy Polling and now SurveyUSA show Obama ahead in early voting; a poll by the Los Angeles Times shows McCain ahead in early voting; and a poll by the St. Petersburg Times shows the two candidates tied in early voting. Wow, that's fucking terrifying. Only one of those three polling outfits is going to wind up being right! That's only one-third!!!!11111 Keep up the fight, buckaroo billy! You're really making a big difference here! Posted by: VJay at November 04, 2008 02:22 AM (k87Wm) 91
Just curious... but has anyone ever managed to win by campaigning for President on a promise to raise taxes?
I don't think anyone has... as far as I know, all the Presidents who have ever raised taxes only did so after having promised not to. Or am I missing something? Posted by: Watcher at November 04, 2008 02:28 AM (HGokW) 92
I voted Absentee. Partly because I just don't trust the stupid E-voting we have in CA. It's retarded, and not very user friendly. Nothing beats IMHO a paper ballot, and it's hard to forge those too. It can be done, but a lot more trouble is required vs. a electronic voting machine.
I wonder how the Absentee balloting proportion will affect the race? McCain's come on strong, if more people just vote at the polls, it's better for him. If they voted early, Obama might have an advantage. I dunno. I think everything is up in the air. No one knows anything. I certainly don't trust either polls or the whoring media. Excellent. That's what winning looks like on election eve. Obama's early voting bolt is shot - the hardcore already heeded him and voted early. They're going down now. Posted by: VRWC Agent at November 04, 2008 02:43 AM (o2slJ) 95

Here is a personal anecdote that I hope is widespread: A good friend, normally liberal and has voted Green in the past, admitted to me last night that over the course of the past year, he has realized how drunk on power the Democrats will become if they hold the White House, the Senate, and the House. He has come over to the dark side and will be voting for McCain. Posted by: TCR at November 04, 2008 02:49 AM (rX6yO) 97

ace you need to link to this, memeo to allah and his zombies and eeyore thugs from the PUMAs (emphasis mine): We don’t want to beat a dead horse here (or, donkey, as the case may be), but we need to remind you all, once more, not to be Eeyores today. The Obamedia is going to do to you what they did to Hillary supporters during the primaries — they are going to lie, and float all sorts of incorrect exit polls, and start revving up to declare Obama the winner. Drudge Report — mark our words — is going to run that flashing red/blue siren he loves to report McCain losing all sorts of traditional Republican states around midday. He’s going to get all of you Eeyores hyperventilating. The goal of the Obamedia is to depress you so much you don’t turn out to vote. Our friend Astrid always falls for this garbage, and we know she is not all alone. She’ll be miserable all day because she’s never learned to turn out the media and just chill out. This is going to go down just like Super Tuesday - where the media claimed Obama would win California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and others…but Clinton won every state we predicted she’d win. In fact, we were right about every state in the primaries except Missouri, which Clinton lost by less than 1%. Otherwise, we were spot-on. So, we know you Eeyores are going to drive everyone in your lives crazy today. You are going to panic and wet yourselves and email/call/bother all of your friends and relatives all day. You’ll forward bogus polls and terrible links to everyone, and depress people left and right. We have no idea why you people behave this way and really wish you would stop. Because we’ve been through this with you since New Hampshire and just think it’s all so ridiculous. Here’s our advice: take a break from news today — consider everything you hear to be lies. Watch some cool movies (our favorite of all time is The Contender with Joan Allen), eat a nice sandwich, have a nap (or two), then tune into the Election Results around 10pm or so CST to see the final tallies add up and wait for a winner. The rest of the day will just drive you over the edge — and then you will spread this Eeyore gloom and doom to everyone else, because that seems to be what you do. We will never understand that. But, we know you’ll do it, because you’ve consistently done it since January. It’s very predictable. Just like the election results. McCain wins 286-252…and America gets its first female Vice President. And on November 5th, we start campaigning for 2012. Posted by: YRM at November 04, 2008 03:28 AM (004wR) 102

I agree with OregonMuse that Oregon is as hopeless as usual for the Republican nominee for President (mostly because of the people who live right by me!). I could not guess a percentage, but I must remonstrate OM on his failure to grow a pair, and do the right thing and vote for Smith. I have sent one positive e-mail and a couple negative ones (OK, they really were not very nice!) to Smith (funny, I think that he only answered the positive one). Smith drives me nuts, but still he is not completely worthless. Let me do the math: Smith>>Merkley=vote-->Smith! I can't understand why getting half a loaf (or whatever fraction is available) is not better than a turd sandwich.
This is the way that I see it. Some little putz who does not have a clue, but who wants to get some from his wannabe gf who is soooo Democratic (except in the putting-out department, at least for him), figures that he will let her use her number two pencil on the damn ovals and hope for the best (just to be clear, we have totally vote by mail here in case you are straining to construe the sexual angles involved in such loaded terms as "number two pencil" and of course "ovals"!). My best guess is that the putz gets nothing, but now his vote cancels mine. Damn! Maybe it is simple fraud which takes out my vote, whatever! I can't even get some guy at AOS to realize the damn calculus here? How can that be? I can only imagine what the completely uninformed are doing! You have to take one for the team often and that has always been the case. Smith is a douche, but the alternative is unthinkable! I personally think the ad in which Merkley is stuffing his face (a pork sandwich possibly?) should have clinched the deal for even a truly "moderate" voter. I can see a protest vote when it does not matter, but this vote is obviously critical! OM is not clueless. I feel betrayed.
OK, I went a bit nuts on OM, especially since in the same post that he admitted his vote, he questioned it. I suppose that is a start. OK, I am just saying that I generally detest such behavior. I have now made it PC, and as such, beyond approach. I am pretty sure it is a codicil in the new manual at the re-education camps we are destined to flunk. Of course I am only talking theory, and that is another reason I am destined to flunk! I was actually pretty good at school usually, but I do not think this is the school we can believe in (I know cheap, but get over it!). I really do think it best to head this one off at the pass.
I will be in my bunk (just because I need the sleep!). I have never ever followed an election so closely. My first vote was against Carter. My second vote was against Carter (and for Reagan, do not give me any grief about failing to mention that, but as the AOS gag goes it was mostly against Carter--stake in the heart stuff, you know the drill). If you are old enough to remember those days remind the younger folk. I, at first, thought that maybe we were headed back there again, but I now think that Obama could do more damage. It is damn sad when you think that the Carter years are some kind of floor. I have a signed note from Carter in his own hand. I swear to God, life is bizarre! Whatever happens, to quote Firefly once again, we are still walking and talking (to any people who are not, I was not walking for a period also). This brings to mind another movie reference which I think is apt. In Galaxy Quest, Guy asks tech sergeant whatever something like: Is there air! You do not know! The actor who plays Monk on the TV show says as he opens up the door to the shuttle on a strange planet something like it seems OK to me. This seems the metaphor which describes this election to me.
Sweet dreams all, and hopefully things go well Tuesday. I really do appreciate everyone's effort.
