Which reminds me, in my class there's this Taiwanese national reading about how the US Election works, he couldn't understand how the point system was decided. I was explaining to him how points were distributed between states, that each states had their representatives + senators to give a state a certain amount of points plus DC having it's default 3. Especially telling him that small states have a marginal advantage over the big states like California because of the 2 Senator points.

I'm going to give him the benefit of a doubt in that I don't think he was consciously doing this. Instead, I think he is doing it at a subconscious level. His interior feelings are being exposed. For a true independent, I think this is still an indictment against him. He does not truly respect his opponents. This is supported by his record. If people will but just open their eyes and ears.... If you want to shoot somebody the bird, why don't you just do it. This is childish behavior. This is like a third grader talking about the teacher in the restroom. No courage to do the deed? I think it was Churchill who said that true leaders inspire people to be just like them. How many people look at Obama and laugh? I do. The man does not deserve to lead me. Let's just suppose that half the country is dead set against everything I would want to do as President. Would you agree with me that that leaves me with two options? I can flip them the bird, or I can try to win them over. Which is the best option? From this we can see that Obama has no intention of leading the country. He is going to get his, and to hell with everyone else. Anyone who votes for Obama is a fool. Posted by: Harry at November 03, 2008 02:08 PM (J6QDn) 62

The Other Shoe, it's all about turnout, turnout, turnout.
The only reason Obama's ahead at all is the turnout models the pollsters are using. They are assuming self-identified Dems will outdraw Reps by a margin double that in the history of presidential elections. It might be true. But if you normalize for turnout in previous election years, it's a McCain landslide. So who knows? Lots of people aren't really nailed down on their choice until they walk into the booth. Even more can be persuaded when one candidate makes a dick move towards the end. Posted by: AmishDude at November 03, 2008 02:19 PM (T0NGe) 110

More or less recovered. Good night's sleep and Sable and I took our midnight walk last night.
We are off for our morning walk, and I'll have a good bit here later. Despair is a sin, and often a mistake. The polls do not record the "refused to respond" which in my judgment is a much larger category than any admit -- it includes me, five times so far this year since I'm home to answer the phone more than many people are -- and I suspect that more McCain people refuse to respond than the trendier Obama enthusiasts. Few Republicans are enthusiastic. I wish there were a safe recipient for the Turn The Rascals Out! vote. There isn't. Electing a junior senator whose political positions are indistinguishable from McGovern except on the checkoff unionization which even McGovern opposes cannot be a good thing for the future of the nation. If the Democratic candidate were Colin Powell, who has fairly traditional liberal views but is primarily a centrist with some military (including political military, but who has led troops in combat) experience, I'd very likely vote for him on the grounds that he would be a good restraining influence on Rangel, Franks, Dodd, Pelosi, and the weak Reid. Alas, Obama isn't likely to stand up to much of anything; his political experience has been Chicago machine go along to get along. But the election is not over. There are more decline to answer voters than it takes to change the election. One vote per precinct in California delivered the nation to Woodrow Wilson. The way to win elections is to get those who intend to vote for your candidate to go vote. Few readers here are not capable of getting two or three voters to the polls. That's well over a million votes. Think on it. from jerrypournelle.com Posted by: funky chicken at November 03, 2008 02:30 PM (xyyHG) 150

Sure, YRM 148, Fox and all of the 251 (252 including this one) consecutive polls Karl Rove said Obama's been leading in since September are all sell-outs.
That said. Barry is such a putz that he talks about bankrupting coal companies. About bringing about skyrocketing energy prices. Kicking reporters off his campaign plane 4-days before the vote. And now flipping the bird to Obama 1-day before the vote. Yeah, this is still winnable. And Drudge is in my good books again. My defense will be very simple. 1. I predicted a narrow McCain win. 2. Allah's prediction was more optimistic than Karl Rove's. 3. It was a normal (literal mathematical meaning of the world) prediction within the punditry. That's assuming he is wrong, which, God, I hope so. This is why we need a president who will bring us together.
The hell I do. I do not need a Dear Leader who will teach me to Hope and Change. I do not need anyone to tell me that political differences, while important, are not the most important thing. I live it every single day in my life. Due to the vagaries of my personal life, most of my friends are far, far to the left of me. Hell, my BFF is a freaking Commie for heaven's sake. And that's just fine by me. Tolerance is recognizing that other people have the right to be horrifically wrong. So they have a different view of how society should be structured. That's nothing compared to our shared love of other things. It's entirely possible to agree to disagree and go on with life. The continuation of the entire theory that the personal is per se political needs to end and end now. That is what is fueling the rage. When a disagreement on theory turns into an attack on personalty, then it's going to be fierce. Posted by: alexthechick at November 03, 2008 02:53 PM (SHHaV) 211

A wonderful and appropriate quote I copied from an AOS poster a few weeks ago (I am sorry I don't remember his/her username):
"Barack Obama is a nuclear-powered, hydraulic douchebag with a ten-gallon reservoir, five-speed adjustable flow control, and a three-meter flexi-hose with gold-plated nozzles of varying lengths and widths. He is state of the art. Never in the history of douchebags has a douchebag been manufactured with such subtlety and attention to detail. No douchebag could begin to approximate the manner in which Barack Obama reifies the very Platonic ideal of the douchebag--the Form (eidos) from which all douchebags receive their douchebaggery (or douchebagattude, not sure what the proper coinage is here). He is the apogee, the apex, the summit, the apotheois of the douchebag. All other douchebags that have gone before, and all that will come after, pale in comparison. They are mere shadows of His Supreme Douche-osity. There has never been a time in the long and storied history of the Universe when such perfect douchery was physically present and visible to all with eyes to see it. The power of his douchery is so great that vaginas and anuses are cleansed merely by being in his proximity--no actual contact is necessary. He passes by: mungy snatches and stale squeakholes are miraculously refreshed, breathing as if with new life, and a hint of lavender. And once elected President, Barack will cleanse the orifaces of Gaia with mighty streams of hope and change, washing away the funky residue of a billion joyless copulations so that she is renewed and ready to be taken like a virgin bride on her wedding night." Reach up and 'scratch' it with your index finger; then immediately adjust your fingers so that you 'scratch' it with your middle finger - just the way Obama did. Notice anything?? It feels completely and utterly contrived. It is an UNNATURAL finger adjustment that requires forethought. You will never unconsciously scratch any part of your body that way. At heart, Obama is a petty and vicious little boy.

Posted by: HipsterCon at November 03, 2008 03:40 PM (FWI/i) 259
Last post requires follow up: By hurling this petty and vicious insult at one America's finest war heroes Obama has finally removed all doubt as to who he really is at heart. We have long suspected that there is something rotten in Obama's heart. How could Obama take his family to sit in that hate-filled church all those years? There had been a competing explanation: political expediency. Attending a church like that was simply what one did in order to rise through the ranks of deep left Chicago politics. But now Obama has removed all doubt. The rhetoric in that church is who he is at heart. It is who he wants his children to be. He did not go to that church for the sake of political expediency; but he damn well reluctantly left it for the sake of political expediency. Membership in the church was his true, heartfelt preference. Leaving it was not. I wonder if even ACE realizes the significance of Obama's naked and obscene gesture. If Obama becomes president, America might well be in much worse trouble than we dared imagine. I will hope and pray extra hard tonight that America wakes up in time to deliver victory to McCain & Palin tomorrow.

You can't "flip the bird" any more deliberate than what Obama just did. If, for some reason, someone feels the need to wipe their mouth, there is absolutely no reason at all to hold their hand up to their lips, THEN to flagrantly thrust their middle finger in a blatant "flipping" motion. Simply rubbing your fingers on your lips is what people do in this instance. It is clear as a bell what Obama was slyly doing. And the fact that Obama did the exact same "street thug" gesture at the exact same moment during the primaries seals the deal. This is someone who is so arrogant, and who feels that he is so vastly superior to everyone else, that he can play his little games with impunity.
