US Casualties Down In Iraq And Afghanistan...Terrorist Casualties Up In Pakistan

Let's double up on the good news, shall we?

U.S. deaths in Iraq fell in October to their lowest monthly level of the war, matching the record low of 13 fatalities suffered in July. Iraqi deaths fell to their lowest monthly levels of the year. Eight of the 13 Americans died in combat, most of them in northern Iraq where al-Qaida and other Sunni insurgent groups remain active. The U.S. military suffered 25 deaths in September and 23 in August.

In Afghanistan, meanwhile, 15 U.S. military deaths were reported for October. The monthly toll in that combat theater had been in the 20s since June, when 28 Americans were killed - the worst one-month total since that war began in late 2001.

It's pretty amazing to think that non-combat deaths out numbered combat ones in Iraq. While that's 'good' news, it's also a reminder that no matter where they are, US servicemen and women are doing very important and dangerous work on our behalf.

Meanwhile, the hits keep on coming in Pakistan.

An Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative -- described by the United States as the terror network's propaganda chief -- was killed in a missile strike in Pakistan, security officials said on Saturday.

Abu Jihad al-Masri was among several rebels killed when two missiles fired by a suspected US spy drone hit a truck in the North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan on Friday night, they said.

The United States has offered a one-million-dollar bounty for the death or capture of al-Masri, who has appeared in an anti-Western video introduced by Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's number two.

"The strike was aimed at a vehicle carrying Abu Jihad and two others. The target was successfully hit and all three people were killed," a senior Pakistani security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

And as a bonus...US troops killed 19 terrorists in Afghanistan.

ZERO combat deaths, the 16 deaths in Iraq were either "misadventure" or suicide, ZERO combat deaths.

2 Wicked,

That's not true. There were combat deaths in October in Iraq.

Shoe Shopping

A guy walks into a shoe store and asks for a pair of shoes, size 8.

The obviously well trained salesman says, "But sir, you take an 11 or
eleven-and-a- half."

"Just bring me a size eight!" the man replies.

The sales guy brings them and the man stuffs his feet into them and
stands up in obvious pain. He turns to the salesman and says, "I've
lost my house because of foreclosure, I live with my mother-in-law,
my daughter ran off with my best friend, and my business has filed
Chapter 7. The only pleasure I have left is to come home at night and
take my shoes off."

I have REAL shoe shopping stories consisting of one of my best friends going, "I like these!  Think they have them in my size?"

"9 1/2 mens?  not likely."

He asked anyways, and then bitched "It's so hard to find shoes my size."

"CUZ YOU ARE A FUCKING MAN BUYING WOMENS SHOES DUDE!"

"Think they have these in my size."

"a 9 1/2 mens? not likely."

He asked, anyways.

You think shoe shopping with a girlfriend or wife is a bitch?  do it with your gay friend, a fucking nightmare.

Thank god he had small feet for a man.

Thank God for fewer U.S. casualties in the war on terror. Now, if we could just do something about the war on shit like this.

My daughter's roommate.

It's probably needless to say that she will not be returning there again.

Has anyone heard Obama's stance on crime? How does he feel about the death penalty?

*nevermind, I'm afraid I already know.

He and his smoking buddy are deaths 116 and 117 for Jacksonville thus far this year. Not fucking Miami or New Orleans, but fucking Jacksonville.

Iraq, and Afghanistan WERE cakewalks.

Yes, we lost lives, but in general, it was.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 12:54 PM (ul7te)

26

we lost more lives in an EXCERCISE for operation overlord, than we lost during both wars combined.

A President obama in 1944, wouldn't have authorized an "operation overlord" he would have signed a treaty for operation OVER.

You're right christoph, I was off numbered.

we lost about 4300, in the excercise, we've now lost about 4200 in Iraq.  I fucked up.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:01 PM (ul7te)

31 You didn't lose anywhere near 4300 in that exercise. Try 749. Still a tragedy.

Posted by: Christoph at November 01, 2008 01:02 PM (hawOV)

32 There were 749 soldiers and sailors killed in an E-boat attack during Exercise Tiger, prior to the invasion of Normandy.

33

I accept your info, but I'm gonna dig some of that shit up, but probably won't.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:04 PM (ul7te)

34

Still a tragedy

Of course it was, but Victory was the goal, so it was inconsequential next to victory.

Heinlein in "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" described those who died of the flu in garrisson as hero's.

"They didn't get there in time, but they died in service."  I'm manipulating and paraphrasing.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:08 PM (ul7te)

35 Wickedpinto, I think you're getting Exercise Tiger mixed up with the actual Dieppe raid in 1942. Canada, incidentally, bore the brunt of that.

The total casualties were still under 4,000, but were very serious for a country with a population size and military strength of Canada at that time.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:11 PM (ul7te)

38 For what it's worth, the lessons learned at Dieppe (Operation Jubilee) would prove vital to the allies during Operation Overlord.

40 Our price per kill is competely unsustainable.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:30 PM (ul7te)

41 It costs a whole lot to train, feed, clothe, equip, ensure, resupply, and rearm a soldier, Wickedpinto. If using technology reduces casualties, kills the enemy without warning, and demoralizes them when they can't even strike back at their killers... it's worth it.

Posted by: Christoph at November 01, 2008 01:36 PM (hawOV)

42

We depend on technology, increasing our price per kill.

Unsustainainable.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:39 PM (ul7te)

43 The total casualties were still under 4,000, but were very serious for a country with a population size and military strength of Canada at that time.

I like a good Canada joke as much as anyone but the truth is, Canada has always punched above its weight. Well, there were a couple of years where they left the ring. It's good to have them back in the fight and aee political leadership worthy of the troops they command.

"A Hellfire up your ass!"  is expensive, a "JDAMN! down your A RAM! is expensive.

We are spending too much too kill too few.

We are killing the right people, THAT WE KNOW ABOUT!  but, I'm sorry,

WWII wasn't won through precision warfare, and it wouldn't have been.

We must completely and totaly demoralize our opponents.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 01, 2008 01:45 PM (ul7te)

47 Wickedpinto, you're too trapped in the past and, frankly, I don't think you're a military expert in a strategic sense.

Keeping technologically superior to your enemy -- which is expensive -- is more "sustainable" than having an ineffective poorly equipped military that trades casualties for cost.

Throughout history technological superiority has been key to winning battles and wars. For God's sakes! It's the main advantage of the west: military science.

Posted by: Christoph at November 01, 2008 01:50 PM (hawOV)

48

Chris, I am totaly in favor of technological superiority.

But!

To remove the tactical and strategic element based on the idea of reducing risk, AS YET, is wrong.

The Marines CONQUER ground, the Army holds it, and the navy and AF supports it.

CAX fucker.

I'm not a modern day Clausewitz, but I doubt you know a fucking thing about him at all.

"If you can sustain a defense, maintain a defense, against an enemy who is desirous of assets."

Or some shit like that.

We expend WAY TOO MUCH! out of aversion to risk, and will spend ourselves into oblivion.

USE tech, but you can't replace WAR with tech.

GET IT?

I live in Jax. Well, way outside of it so that I am out of the normal range of crime. It constantly amazes me how much violence this city holds. The Mandarin area is not even in a particularly bad area of town.

None of my children has experienced what yours has, but my oldest daughter hit and killed a 5 yo boy with her car. There was nothing she could do, but the accident devastated her.

All I can tell you is that your daughter will need you in ways you may not yet fathom and she may not recover on the inside for quite some time.
