2 Vincent Price - Last Man on Earth.  It has "classic" slow zombies.

4 Dawn of the Dead (remake). I swear by this movie, one of the best-written, best-acted, best-directed horror movies of all time. Honestly, it's not really the scariest movie; it's sort of a comedy-action movie which just happens to feature zombies. But it's outstanding.

It sucks brutally.  I thought so the first time I saw it, then forgot about it, then read you raving about it at some point and bought it for eight dollars, then watched it again and remembered how much it utterly sucked.  Good first 10 minutes, good last 10 minutes, root canal for the 70 in between. Every last character is an unlikeable douchebag.

5 Honestly, one of my favorites in a while was 1408, but not many people like it.

10 Session 9 scared the shit out of me.  So did Event Horizon.

11 Like I just said over there, The Thing was the only movie that ever sacred me. We were partying in a rental house on Cape Cod, it was about 2am and I was still going when everyone else passed out and I started watching it with the dog (a big German Shepard). I convinced myself he might be possessed by The Thing…LOL! I kept looking at him and he kept looking at me. It went on that way until dawn when I finally passed out cold!

12 Seven - Se7en or however the hell they spelled it.  Saw it with a girlfriend in the theatre - got home to my empty apartment, called one of the guys cause I knew they were out that night - said come pick me up because I am a-freaking.  Went out and drank until I knew my roommate would be home.  I have never watched it again.

Have never watched the Exorcist.  Devil movies scare the hell out of me.  Slashers and serial killers and people who grab you in a deserted parking lot at night - IOW, realistic horror themes - eh.  Don't get me at all.  Possession and voodoo and weird omnipotent freaks who can do impossible things to people?  Yep.  I fra-reke out.

13 Ringu, the original Japanese movie, not The Ring remake.  Subtitled, but you'll know when to jump.

1 Fright Night!

That one was good, though almost a comedy. When I was 7 my mom took us to see Wes Craven's first feature: "Last House on the Left" at a drive-in. For some reason that one stuck with me for a long time. Seemed plausible, given that it was the early '70s, and what the two girls had to endure was pretty horrific. One of the first grindcore movies made. Of course Craven totally screwed up the ending with that idiotic kazoo/slapstick thing. Yes, I know why he did it, but it just didn't work.

Loved the tagline though: "Just keep telling yourself 'It's only a movie'" or something like that.

Im trying to think what the last horror flick I watched was the most scary.
Now I get freaked out by lots of guts and shit when watching the movie, but after wards your allways telling your self that its fake and that it was just too much gore. And thrillers like alien are all gravy too getting you to jump the hell out of your seat but I think for sure that my most terrifying movie that I have ever watched was candyman. Number one, im the fuck allergic to bees, number two it had that whole creepy talk to the mirror thing going on, and it happened to play around that critical age where you watch a movie and it totally drastically changes your world view sort of deal. I think thats what sealed deal: Im the fuck alaregic to bees, I was 9 or some shit, and it had creepy mirror talk. So offically still in my fragile mind Terrifuckifying.

Dawn of the Dead (new one) scared the fuck outta me. I had trouble sleeping for a few nights. And I used to sleep with my bedroom door open to the rest of the apartment.. no longer... I don't wanna wake up to a zombie child ( or Obama voter) just waiting for me to awake before feedin on my tiny brain.

I also close the door from the bathroom to the bedroom cuz of IT. Never saw the movie but the book really fucked with my head while listening to the faucet drip in the bathroom while trying to fall asleep.

Event Horizon almost pegs the creepy-o-meter . Same with Prince of Darkness.

Ooh, first a disclaimer...I am a scary movie chicken...BIG chicken. But, some kinds I like. Not slashers, but thrillers for sure. And absolutely no hookey-pookey-spookey devil movies - nope not me. My husband would have to go check for every single scary noice I imagined for months on end.

But, for thrillers -

We LOVE to watch Deep Blue Sea - the shark movie with LL Cool J, can watch it over and over. How about that parrot? It's got tension and laughs - best combo for me!

And I remember years and years ago we went and saw Manhunter - it was a Michael Mann film ( of Miami Vice and such) and had William Peterson in it (Grissom on CSI), I remember being scared on the ride home from Jacksonville that night!

All of us Gen Xers--those devil child movies of the 60s and 70s (Rosemary's Baby, Exorcist, Don't Look Now, The Omen, The Shining (kind of)) depicted how alienated how parents were from us. Ergo, Nirvana. 

Dittos on the numbers stations being freaky.  On the radio, every once in a while, Art  Bell had campy/scary stuff on,  like Shadowpeople, the Ditch from Hell, Malachi Martin.

Ooops! I forgot to add (this a true story) Red Dawn. I was an 18/19 yr new mom and my husband and I went to see it. I guess bc we were young and impressionable - it really gave us both pause. Made us realize that freedom could be taken away, things we weren't naturally otherwise prone to think about at that time in our lives. We got copies for our sons a few yrs ago, bc we wanted them to have that same impression. It is a family fav.

118 I go back and forth on Halloween III.  It came out when I was a Freshman in high school and so has a special nostalgic place in my heart. 

It gets a lot of crap because it wasn't about Michael Myers, but (a) I have a lot of respect for the fact that the filmmakers were trying to be a little more ambitious with the franchise, hoping to turn it into something larger than Michael Myers, and (b) let's be honest, the Michael Myers films pretty much suck ass.  Halloween is pretty good (and holds up okay), but pretty much all of the Michael Myers sequels are mediocre at best and downright awful at worst.

Nonetheless, even though I'll always defend Halloween III against unfair criticism, it's not very good.  For one thing, it's plot makes zero sense.

Still, it's got some good creepy imagery (the woman with insects crawling out of her disfigured face) and the female lead, Stacey Nelkin, was cute and sexy.  Hawt!

141 I'm drawing a blank for the scariest movie I've seen but a good scary movie is showing right now (with probably replays later) on G4TV - The Host.

It's a Korean monster movie (horror & comedy) which breaks one of the prime rules of monster movies - don't show the monster too soon. They show the monster right near the start of the movie and DANG that's just brilliant (in this movie).

Anyway, you get enough empathy for the characters that you get nervous when they're in peril. The movie is messed up enough that you have no idea who's going to live or die. And the funny stuff is funny!

"Aliens," while technically a sci-fi action feature, had some truly scary scenes...if you're claustrophobic that is. For that matter "Alien" also had a high creepiness factor to it.

Two more from the '70's:

"The Brood," which HBO seemed to play every 4 hours for a year (not terrifying but supremely creepy) and "It's Alive," wherein mom gives birth to "something" which immediately slaughters everyone in the delivery room (except mom). The rest of the movie is spent trying to hunt Junior down as he slaughters his way across a city.

I agree with a previous comment about "Demon Seed." Yep, it looks a little dated, as do all '70's dystopian movies, but it was still pretty good, and very original. Hopefully my Dell doesn't try and knock me up with its spawn anytime soon.

SCARIEST movie I ever saw is "When a Stranger Calls," The original has 40 minutes of the most intense suspense there is, and the finale is almost as intense.  I have stories about a bunch of young bad ass marines watching it.

The power of "The ring," is that it's easy to fall into the world and to allow suspense to build.

Too much horror is halfassed gorified, and lame.

Rogue - Australian crocodile horror, very naturalistic so it starts a little slow but very good, more creepy than bloody, very well plotted.

Nightmare Detective - Japanese movie at Blockbuster, has the creepy thing going on especially once you realize what's happening, the ending may or may not work for you

Old Boy - korean thriller, but more a tragedy in the classical sense ie. inspires dread and horror in the viewer

Kontroll - slasher flick and very dark comedy, Hungarian

Silent Hill - better than it has any right to be, not great but some effective scenes

I always watch one cheesy 70's horror movie on Halloween. Last year it was Evil Dead, the year before, The Fog... tonight... The Car. I hadn't realized how closely the car Bender changes into in the Futurama episode "The Honking" was based on this cheesy movie.

Also, both versions of Amityville Horror suck.

167 A movie that I'm sure absolutely no one has mentioned: Viy (1967), which is notable for having been the first "horror" film ever made under Soviet censorship. A young priest in 18th-century Ukraine is hired to do a three-night prayer vigil by the coffin of a beautiful young woman who has died suddenly under mysterious circumstances.

Only (a) she's actually a witch; (b) the priest himself had inadvertently caused her death; and (c) she's not QUITE dead, and is in a really pissy mood.

By American standards -- even 1967 American standards -- the "horror" sequences are far more campy than scary. But the fairly lavish period-piece production is entertaining, and I'd be willing to bet (though I can't confirm it) that the makers of Ringu were familiar with Viy -- since the Ukrainian witch and the Japanese ghost-girl definitely have that "identical cousins" thing going on.

The poster alone -- a human eye up very close, with a bee hovering a wingspan away -- is enough to creep you out. No real "scares" here, that's not what it aims for -- but it's a very effective movie at being steadily unnerving.  They aren't out so much to make you scream as to make you want to push away.

David Chronenberg's "The Dead Zone"

Again, not so much after making you wet your pants, as much to make you feel really really creeped out. Good performances all around from Walken, Adams, and Sheen, as well as a good supporting cast.

Being a major horror fan, I've been looking for Session 9 for a while, but can't find it.  Will need to look harder. 

Vincent Price - Last Man on Earth.  It has "classic" slow zombies.

Agree w/ this one.  It's a great flick, good story line.  When his wife comes to the door....goooood scene.
