| Rampant speculation and wishful thinking thread [Alice H]It's Thursday night and I'm out of my head on cold medicine, so let's have some crazy talk, shall we? I'm curious to hear thoughts on what happens to the Democratic Party and some of their pet projects, i.e. ACORN, between November 5, 2008 and November 6, 2012. Especially in light of the PUMA movement - I've talked to several people who claim to have no idea who/what it is, on both sides of the fence. Is PUMA going to affect Democratic politics going forward? I'm also curious to hear thoughts regarding the mainstream media's future. Are we fringe freaks who will soon be regarded on the same sanity level as the troofers, or is a radical shift from trusting the MSM on its way? And where the GOP will be in four years, if we haven't all been locked up and shipped to the southwest for re-education. And for you lawyerly types out there, I now have a webcam trained on my front yard, given that our signs have been stolen and our cars have been vandalized (separate occasions). If I manage to get video of our signs being stolen again, what can I push to have someone charged with that goes beyond petty theft?Comments1
Depending on what the vandalism is, you may be able to press a charge of terroristic threats.

I think we are all going to be sent to reeducation camps. Quite frankly, as long as I'm in the same one as alexthechick and LauraW, I'm okay with that.

The first thing we need to do is stop looking towards 2012 as our next big election. We can't allow the midterms to go by without trying to strike a blow at the Dems.
The campaigns for 2010 begin on 11/05/08. The GOP can cut the legs out from Obama and take control of Congress in just two short years. Stealing lawn signs.
Rather than suing or getting the law involved think of creative ways of screwing with them in a safe way. Put your lawn sign in the ground then under the plastic where one would grab the sign put a 6 foot hole with sharpened bamboo spikes soaked in feces and urine at the bottom. Or if that's not punishment enough, you could put a land mine under the sign with the trigger being the sign...pull it out....KABOOM. Now of course these are a few of the safest ways one could deal with petty vandalism. Posted by: William Ayers at October 30, 2008 10:18 PM (Am6n/) 18
Ayers and friends will come out of the woodwork and assume high ranking jobs in the Obama Reich. Conservatives who don't roll over will be headed for re-education camps. Those who can't be re-educated will be eliminated (use your imagination). The MSM will begin asking questions (after all pal, WE MADE YOU). Various talking heads will begin to "disappear". The Fairness Doctrine will be reinstated; everyone will sing Obama's praises as that's "fair". Anything else gets you a ticket to re-educaton.

Bart, @#6: The first thing we need to do is stop looking towards 2012 as our next big election. We can't allow the midterms to go by without trying to strike a blow at the Dems. He's right. Furthermore, the one big issue about which Ace keeps saying, "This is the election"? In the end, it's more than that. Picture this: Obama is given carte blanche by an all-too-happy Democratic congressional majority to make significant changes to the way the American economy works. Absent a blunderfuck so hamfisted that it plunges us into depression (and please note, I'm not ruling that out), the market/economy will recover, as it always does, except now everyone who doesn't understand a damn thing about the market which is basically everybody will treat GOP presidencies as the disease and Obamanomics as the cure. I'm already run ragged trying to convince people I know that the recessions at the start of Bush's term were, in order, the dot-com bust that began with the Clinton Justice Department's attempted kneecapping of Microsoft, and the precipitous global fall that followed 9/11. But to them, The Narrative is already starting: Clinton Economy Good!, Bush Economy Bad!, Obama Economy DoublePlusGood! Good luck getting back 50 or so House seats and 20 Senate seats after that "Truth" begins to sink in. Posted by: INCITEmarsh at October 30, 2008 10:20 PM (oPFyu) 21
Can't do anything dangerous with the lawn, my next door neighbor runs a home daycare. The kids run and play on our lawn all the time, there's no clear division. It was suggested over at DPUD that I set up a Claymore, that's also out.

Predictions:
If Barry is elected and fucks with our constitution, I'm joining a resistance movement. We'll all be expected to carry those little Maoist red books. MSM is in the toilet no matter how the election turns out. Along with anything NBC, CBS, ABC or CNN. The masses have stopped viewing, and I, for one, will never go back. The GOP will come out of this stronger than ever, especially after Obiden leads us into WWIII. On the other hand.... PUMAs are a major force that the Dems cannot control. I see them influencing significant change. Posted by: 8starsnorth at October 30, 2008 10:21 PM (QhFmy) 25

With the sign thing, depending on the wording of your local laws, stealing a sign could be politically motivated, and could be argued as a hate crime. Or wire it with electricity. Or dig a pit, and cover it with leaves, and toss in a saber-toothed tiger. Posted by: Clovis27 at October 30, 2008 10:22 PM (DwDUz) 27

I think it depends what happens next Tuesday. If Obama wins, I don't know that elections will matter for a long time (I think he'll do that much damage to the economy).
If When he loses, I think the Dems fracture. Obama has the support of like all the current leadership and I can see them casting out anyone that can be identified as a PUMA for their betrayal. The PUMAs under Hillary form a new party that claims to be the centrist alternative to the Reps and Dems. By 2012, the centrists, caucusing with Reps push the Dems into the minority position in both houses of Congress. However in a three way race, McCain is reelected with less votes than the total of Clinton and Obama (since only his cultists are left). By 2016, the Dems are barely relevant, but stay home out of spite, leading to the election of Sarah Palin. At least assuming I read the title of this thread correctly. Posted by: Methos at October 30, 2008 10:23 PM (Ll22T) 31
Here's my 3-pronged approach:
1) Put pressure on the Republican leadersip, i.e., Boehner, McConnell, and the GOP chairman, to advance the Conservative agenda AND hammer the Democrats on everything. 2) Make sure Gov Palin gets reelected. Very important. Even if she's not our next nominee, it would be a damaging blow to morale if she gets booted in Alaska. The Democrats and the cocksuckers like Noonan will look like they were right and we can't have that. 3) Never ever give Obama any credit or support for anything. He will be a fraud and a failure from day one. Period. And always be vocal about your disapproval for Obama and the Democrats. Speak ill of them every chance you get, put bumper stickers on your cars, etc. Posted by: Bart at October 30, 2008 10:24 PM (Imk8E) 32
Crazy Talk:
The RNC is going to spam the LA Times, getting an email to every person working there, offerring $500,000 for the first person to get them a copy of the video, and $200,000 for the second person to do it (so long as the second one gets it to them before it's playing on Fox). They will get 2 copies of the video w/n 2 hours, it will get played non-stop until the election, and McCain will win in a landslide. Posted by: Greg Q at October 30, 2008 10:25 PM (87k2j) 33

I found this link over at ABCs Political Radar blog. I'm not sure if it's legitimate or if it's just some crazy, deluded guy. Here's the "about me" info from the blog -
TRUTH FIRST. I am a teacher of history and currently an advisor to President Barack Obama. The Truth must always come first. The African people were the first people on Earth. We created the world's greatest civilizations and learned the ways of the universe. We were Kings and Queens and we explored the world. We must never forget this. Africa is our motherland. It is our destiny. As a college professor it is my responsibility to teach the TRUTH so that my students can pass it down to their children and to generations to come. The TRUTH FIRST always.
He doesn't seem to like whitey very much and he has a poll an his site asking if Obama will become President and one of the possible responses is "no, the white man will never allow it". He says he's located in Africa.

Yeah, that's my biggest fear, and I'm almost certain that's what is going to happen, given that the ecomony is a bit crappy right now, so it can only get better. So, here I am, torn between rooting for and against a depression because, on the one hand, I obviously don't want a depression, but on the other hand, I really don't want Obama to get credit for creating a "good" economy that might happen despite, rather than because of, his efforts. And by "good" economy, I mean, it could be worse than the economy under GWB (which, overall really was not that bad), and the media would still spin it as being as just as good or better than the economy under Clinton (which was ok, but not as good as it's made out to be), and certainly better than the ecomony under Bush (which, in many respects, was better than the ecomony under Clinton, but Americans have been told otherwise). And, by the way, I don't really think either Bush or Clinton had all that much to do with how good or bad the economy was under their watch. My opinion is, the best a president can do is get out of the way and try not to do anything stupid. Posted by: Jason at October 30, 2008 10:29 PM (sV0Yw) 42

There's a blog on Kos from 2005 that is supposedly written by Obama. Can y'all check into this and see if it's real?
http://tinyurl.com/dqvv9 In it, he says: "According to the storyline that drives many advocacy groups and Democratic activists - a storyline often reflected in comments on this blog - we are up against a sharply partisan, radically conservative, take-no-prisoners Republican party. They have beaten us twice by energizing their base with red meat rhetoric and single-minded devotion and discipline to their agenda. In order to beat them, it is necessary for Democrats to get some backbone, give as good as they get, brook no compromise, drive out Democrats who are interested in appeasing the right wing, and enforce a more clearly progressive agenda." This is divisive rhetoric, plain and simple, essentially saying squash moderate POVs. Posted by: Mary at October 30, 2008 10:39 PM (beLav) 60

Win or lose, politics will go on as usual. There will be no hearings or censure or jail time.
There will be pork, and graft, and corruption, of course. Politics is a career choice now; a for-sure-how-to-make-a-million-dollars infomercial career choice, and changing that is going to take an awful lot of guts. And the right people. And the willingness of Free Americans to vote for something other than the current order. Ted Kennedy. Barney Frank. That insane woman from God knows where. You know, the aliens-are-in-my-soup broad. McKinney, right? Kucinich. Joe Freakin' Biden! Nancy Pelosi. Heck, McCain, too. And on and on... Best idea I've heard lately? Vote EVERYONE who is in, OUT. Regardless of party affiliation. Clean 'em out. Next vote go-round? Do It Again. Vote 'em out! TERM LIMITS!!! Wash, rinse, repeat...turnover just might flush the toilet that local politics, and Washington, has become. And while you're at it, have your volunteers pore over their state budget, the fed budget, line by painful line. Break it down so Average Joes like me can understand where my dough is being wasted. Take two or four years to put it all together. Let the public know where our money is being spent; maybe open a national dialogue that might help fix this mess that is todays political "scene", man. Form a new Party. The Party For Rational Spending and Fucking Cool Shit, or maybe there's a better name for it. Backed by Facts. Loaded for Bear. The Democrats have been consumed by the MoveOn.org wing of the party. Should Obama lose, the Dems will have to decide whether the fringe should be in control.
The GOP went through this and our moderates won. We marginalized the extremists, and emerged as a much stronger party. I'm not smart enough to know what will happen amongst Democrats, but I rather hope they stick with this socialist fringe model. It's great for the GOP, even when we're the underdogs. A puma had a good suggestion for your lawn signs. Give them a good dousing of motor oil. If they steal your signs and throw them in the back seat of a car to drive away, they will get oil all over their back seat.
Of course if you have poison ivy in your area you might think of something more creative. Posted by: snookered at October 30, 2008 10:46 PM (h3PdB) Posted by: Andy at October 30, 2008 10:47 PM (B+HYX) 78

Rampant speculation - The economy will continue it's downward spiral and hyper-inflation will make the dollar worthless.
The mortgage industry won't be happy with the fact that their payments are being made in monopoly money, so they'll petition Congress to enact some form of revaluation of their devauled assets driving the people who "did things right" from their homes. A new concept of money will be implemented and if you don't want in then you can pound sand (i.e. no job, no food, refugee status). Brigades of the "Civilian National Security Force" will round up the "unpatriotic" people and find them new homes in various camps around the country. Just a reminder, we should be getting out asses handed to us Reagan v. Mondale style this year. We're not. That old bastard McCain still has a fighting chance that's getting better every day. Obama, if he wins, will not win a general vote blowout, and when his mask falls after having to actually rely on more than his ability to talk purty, then we could be looking at a rebound like you wouldn't believe come '10. Also, a lot of folks looking to be all cosmopolitan and shit right now would have some explaining to do. On a side note, did anyone see Reason's little feature on who various libertarians are voting for? Surprise, surprise...most of them are voting for Obama. Well, at least among those who aren't throwing their votes away on Bob Barr. Now, I've dabbled here and there in libertarian politics, but I can't, for the life of me, understand why self-described libertarians would support Obama, especially with a Democratic Congress in place. There's very little that's "libertarian" about Obama, except maybe the abortion-on-demand stuff. So, has Reason just become another left-wing rag, and thus no longer really "libertarian", or should I quit referring to myself as a "libertarian-leaning conservative"? Well, I've been drinking the PUMA kool-aid all week to buck up my spirits, and now I have a serious HillBuzz. So here's my crazy: McCain is going to win this thing. 1) The Yard Sign anecdote: I live in a "Democrat Machine" town in RI. You cannot pass two houses in a row without seeing at least 2 political signs in each yard. For Democrats. Local Democrats. No Obama signs. I have to cross over into the next (affluent) township to find an Obama/Biden sign. I don't think the blue collar Democrats are really all that fired up about this guy. They're not liberal-- they're Democrats. My gut tells me they're not buying it. I think Obama's support is exactly where we think it is: blacks, young folks, and annoying liberal intellectuals. The undecided vote is going to split between McCain and "sittin' this one out." 2) The polls are crap. They must be crap, because the pollsters are admitting to an average of 80% (or more!) refusal rate. Now in any other year-- say, Bush-Kerry-- I would expect those refusals to split fairly evenly; everybody hates being bugged by pollsters. I am sure that the refusal rate is usually pretty high and the pollsters work it into their methodology. But this is not an ordinary year. You know who loves telling pollsters who they're voting for? Obamabots. I don't see any possible way, given 8 out of 10 people who tell the pollster to fuck off, that there isn't a much greater proportion of McCain voters among those refusals. If the pollsters are oversampling Democrats to begin with, and the McCain voters (and anti-Obama voters) are refusing to be polled, and on top of all that McCain is still within striking distance-- well... 3) McCain carries PA, OH, FL, CO, NH. And maybe NV. 4) Nov. 4th is going to SUCK. It's going to be a long, long day of being told that Obama is blowing the doors off this thing. If you thought the Kerry exit polling was bad, wait until this year. Do not let them get you down. It is vitally important that we all do our part and get out the vote. Grab a couple of old folks, a few bitter clingers from your neighborhood, and make sure they get to the polls. You know they're registered. But they might not be motivated. Motivate them. 5) We'll know early. If McCain takes NH or PA, that's the signal. And there is quite simply no place I would rather be than tuned in to MSNBC for that. 6) Yeah, I guess the inevitable race riots are gonna kinda suck, though. I'm in a unique position -- I married very young (19), had two kids right off the bat and, in December, at the age of 32, I will graduate from college. In talking with my sister who is several year older, she is amazed at the somewhat lackadaisical attitude of every day folks in reaction to Obama's socialist tendencies. She wonders why more people aren't asking serious questions about a person that has the potential to be our next president ( I think McCain will win, FWIW). Anyway, I told her that the re-education has already begun. I live in Georgia -- a Bible belt state, traditionally red, etc. My university is already pushing that socialism is good. People learn very quickly to shut up and tell professors what they want to hear so that they will pass their classes. Because I'm slightly older than my fellow classmates my worldview is more fixed and stronger than theirs. Given those two elements, I believe I was able to resist what is basically socialist indoctrination in progress. This is Georgia, though. And, typically, Georgia is behind in trends. My university isn't unique, and if it's happening here in the Bible belt, I can only imagine what it is like in more liberal state universities.
On the whole America is becoming (through technology and other means) an immediate gratification society. We want everything to be fair. To be now. To be easy. Hell, at some kids' sports games, they aren't even scoring the games anymore lest someone's feelings be hurt. This notion of fairness through mandate is already in place. I don't believe I'm an Eeyore, but I think even if McCain wins, we are only staving off the inevitable. This country cares too much about what the rest of the world thinks (thus we will seek to be more like them than they like us), and that coupled with the obsession with immediate gratification is rendering socialism a not so bad alternative to what the liberal liberals put up against crazy, stupid, war-mongering Bush and his ilk. Heh. I like history... The African people were the first people on Earth. True. We created the world's greatest civilizations and learned the ways of the universe. False. Ethiopia / Sudan were pretty decent civilisations, by the Bronze Age standard, but marginal; perhaps best compared with the Elamites. Usually this statement is Afrocentrist code for Egypt, which was Coptic-speaking and as such, north African. I have a personal soft spot for the 25th Dynasty in Egypt, which was Nubian and powerful... but even they had adopted the Egyptian civilisation, and didn't "create" it. We were Kings and Queens and we explored the world. False. First off, every man was a king? Lawlz! As for "exploring the world", not likely. Maybe if he was Lebanese or Greek. We must never forget this. Africa is our motherland. It is our destiny. As a college professor it is my responsibility to teach the TRUTH so that my students can pass it down to their children and to generations to come. And now we get into blood, soil, national destiny, and the usual college-professor fascist claptrap. Well that didn't take long. Posted by: David Ross at October 30, 2008 11:00 PM (2tjgU) 94

PUMAs: not a factor after 11/04/08, unless in a theoretical world where Obama is President his approval rating drops below 40% by January 2011. Then you'll hear grumblings of a Clinton primary challenge to incumbent Obama, and PUMAs could be a factor again.
MSM: crossed several important lines/thresholds. The MSM is merging with the blogosphere. Which is a problem because the left dominates the blogosphere in the sense that it is much more powerful and able to inject its agenda into MSM meme-stream. Moments after Palin was announced in August MSMers researched her not by going to palinforvp.blogspot.com or AoS or even the Anchorage Daily News; they went to HuffPuff and Kos. MSM also fell to a new low in terms of its credibility among conservatives. The MSM is no longer simply biased. They now have adopted a nakedly activist ethos when it comes to Obama and the Democratic Party. Conservatives have to develop their own institutional capacity for investigative journalism -- which is literally the only thing separating NYT from TPM. Unaffiliated and ideologically moderate voters perceived the advocacy and manipulation coming from the MSM too, and increasingly they will be turning away from print and tv and toward the web. Arguably, if the KosKidz continue to maintain their current pole position, this could worsen the problem. GOP: The GOP will have experienced a thrilling and invigorating 50-state primary race between Palin and Thune (Palin wins mostly because of a massive solid block of southern delegates and a 5-million strong list of small donors), and offers Thune the VP). Taxes, energy, and jobs will have emerged as the top issues of the 2012 campaign; favorable ground. On the downside, there will have been a number of prominent party switchers (R-->D) in Congress and registration figures in certain parts of the country will continue to get worse (northeast & upper midwest). The Democratic campaign in 2012 will be entirely framed around smearing the entire GOP ticket as Bush Republicans (Stay Out Da Bushes!). I think the best thing for this country is to get a divorce. One thing we should all think about. Obama isn't going to spend four years just trying to do what's right and get reelected. He has one shot at a radical takedown of America, and he's not going to waste it. In one of his books, didn't he mention something about scoffing at his mother's "idealistic" liberalism in favor of the radical, revolutionary left? I will spend the next four years doing what I can to strengthen red state America, because that's where America 2.0 will have it's future. http://tiny.cc/Mgqga I find it hard to see a libertarian voting for O and his socialist bullshit...the dude will have the MSM or his loyal minions crawling up everyone's ass that speak out against the Chosen One... the toilet in DC needs to be flushed ASAP - and some of these fools need to be ID'ed for election defeat in 2010. Next on the list is attacking the MSM on their role in this bullshit...then George Soros and his minions... Next Tuesday needs to the the start of the Second American Revolution.... Re: the sign. Stealing the sign is just petty theft. You could try attaching something valuable to the sign, like a diamond necklace, so next time you can charge them with something more serious. OK, maybe not. How about a motion sensor behind the sign rigged to an alarm?

McCain is going to win and we are going to have the BEST time watching the MSM crack up. MSNBC goes off air. Rudy cleans up ACORN. Hillary and some GOP senator introduce election reform. You know the kind that works. Voter ID cards that are checkable across state lines. Better systems in place to make sure people aren't voting twice. That kind of stuff. Then in 2010 we take back the congress and McCain anounces he won't be seeking a second term and we get Sarah. Posted by: Hurting Head at October 31, 2008 12:29 AM (yW/Al) 139

Just an aside - I'm in Northern NJ for a while. Been cruising the streets of suburbia, and the McCain/Palin signs outnumber the Obama signs 3 to 1. Easy.
NJ is s'posed to be an O state. Every bar I've been in, every deli I've been in; every diner and hotel and motel and supermarket; all anyone talks about is this election. And all I've been hearing is, its McCain. People don't trust America's Next President. And they won't vote for him. Might be race, but I doubt it - it seems to be more of a learning curve. I couldn't believe there were uncommitted voters until I actually met some...no internet, only TV to guide them. And newspapers, too. And remarkably, they were still uncommitted. That means they saw through the bullshit they were being fed on a daily basis, and were still willing to learn. To talk, to listen; to have an opportunity to form an educated opinion. If they're willing to vote, that will mean this election. That's the trick, y'all. Talk it up, get 'em excited to go out and vote. Vote! Early, often, and well after you're dead. Win or lose:
We've got to throw out the RINOs and get some fiscal discipline, or our party doesn't mean much. Next, I'd like to see us be more accepting of gays (as a party). Cut back on the harder right social-con rhetoric. I think it hurts us because we actually spend very little political capital on "moral issues" because our country is so diverse. I'd much rather be a hardass about national security and small government and get others onboard with that ideology. My fondest wish is that we can find common ground with centrist Dems and PUMAs and help them drag their party back toward the middle. That party won't die, but the further left it stays, the less relevant it will always be. Hard left is just not in alignment with the American way of thinking and it's not something that blue collar working people can embrace with comfort. They are more conservative than they think they are. Posted by: ConcernedCitizen at October 31, 2008 01:26 AM (hmDr/) 143
I won't even speculate on what happens if Obama wins. Must think happy thoughts, you know. Must... think... happy... thoughts...
Anyway, if my happy thoughts come through and McCain/Palin win: 1) The Democratic party tears itself apart. At the very least the pro-Obama Left splits off from the PUMAs. I don't see the Blue Dogs sticking around either, though I'm not sure if they'll join the PUMAs or simply go their own way. 2) The usual honeymoon period between Congress and a new POTUS doesn't happen, as the dominant, hard Left faction of the Dems decides to treat President McCain as though he were, you guessed it, George W. Bush beginning his third term. Partisan acrimony quickly resumes, but so does intramural acrimony among the Dems. Meanwhile even though the GOP has lost seats in Congress, they remain unified, form the occasional alliance with the Blue Dogs and thus are able to continue "ruling from below", at least to a certain degree. 3) The slow death of the MSM becomes less slow. My prediction is that broadcast TV network news divisions are the first to go. By all accounts ABC and CBS, and to a lesser extent NBC, have already been treating their news divisions like unwanted stepchildren for years now. And why shouldn't they, when they're just not profitable? I predict that by 2010, NBC Nightly News will be the only national broadcast TV news show left, and even it will be on its last legs, as NBC quietly begins folding its news division into MSNBC even as they downsize them both. 4) The stock market recovers and so do the credit markets and consumer confidence, at least somewhat. We'll still have some hard times ahead but it won't be anywhere near the catastrophe that has been feared. I could probably come up with more if I wasn't getting sleepy. Good night, all... If Obama is elected, the lights will go out for awhile, I think. Reintroduction of the Fairness doctrine. The implementation of 'Internet Neutrality' measures to cut off this avenue free expression (sorry, Ace). The passing of intentionally vague hate speech laws ecompassing what is now ordinarily considered free speech. Targeted IRS audits as a weapon--with those targets including prospective political challengers to Democratic Party-held seats. There will be a creation of a supposedly FDR-like public works organization, although no public works will be accomplished--and perhaps even the creation of the civilian defense force Obama has promoted--although no one is sure from what or whom this domestic paramilitary force will be defending us. And that's on a federal level. Every state and county will have its equivalent to Assistant Secretary of State Brunner, as well as unofficial Truth Squads comprised of enthusiastic prosecutors and law enforcement officers. On a public level, public schools will become indoctrination centers, fully realizing Ayers' dream. Higher education? No tenure for conservative professors of any discipline. The formerly free and independent press? Peggy Noonan, the Obama press secretary, will be busy telling us how great everything is even though inflation is rampant, businesses are failing, and unemployment is soaring. Oh, and those of us who speak out, who draw attention to the sheer un-American wrongness of all this? Tallest wheat meets the scythe, boys. I see hard times coming.
