| US Navy Names Kick Ass Warship After Kick Ass American Hero Michael Monsoor![]() “Michael Monsoor’s name will now be linked with one of our nation’s most visible examples of military power — a U.S. Navy warship,” (Secretary of the Navy Donald) Winter said in the address prepared for a Navy SEAL Warrior Fund dinner. The Michael Monsoor will be the second DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class advanced destroyer. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding is expected to begin construction of the ship next year at its Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., with delivery projected to take place in 2014. Master-at-Arms 2nd Class (SEAL) Michael Monsoor is one of two sailors awarded the Medal of Honor since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began. The first, Lt. Michael Murphy, is the namesake of DDG 112, now under construction at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works of Bath, Maine, and is expected to be delivered in 2011.It's another small payment against a debt we can never fully repay. Here's my original post on the day Monsor's family accepted the Medal of Honor on his behalf. Take a moment and see how this extraordinary man gave his life to save his fellow SEALS. Comments1
That is truly awesome. Could not have been named after a finer man. The sailors and officers will be proud to serve on that ship.

Unless, in order to keep Barney Frank from gutting the defense budget, they have to rename one of those destroyers the U.S.S. Judy Garland.

That's awesome. Good for the Navy. (I'm sure most of you know this but there's a point) During WWII, all five brothers from one family, the Sullivans, joined the Navy and served on the same ship that went down and they all died. There are claims that some were about to abandon ship and realized that at least one brother wasn't there so they all went to get the missing and all died. The Navy will always have a ship named The Sullivans There was a very good movie about them, The Sullivans. I look forward to seeing the movie about Monsoor. The one where America and an American Marine is the good guy that grosses $100 billion. Sorry, I like to make myself laugh. After all, "People don't want to see movies about the war. That's why they all bomb."/braindead movie exec. Posted by: Veeshir at October 30, 2008 01:41 PM (zXUuJ) 16

They live everyday risking their lives so we fools can have all of our freedoms. America, FUCK YEAH! Posted by: nepalady at October 30, 2008 01:44 PM (tIR4y) 18

There are some really emotional tributes to him on You Tube, including one that has footage from his funeral and burial at Ft. Rosecrans here in San Diego. Really intense stuff. Total strangers visit his grave to pay their respects. He and his actions have really made an impression on a wide variety of people. I'm glad the Navy named a ship after him. It's the least we as a nation can do to honor him.

OT: Got an email regarding trip to New Mexico. My sister and I are so stoked! We may get to see Palin yet! I just wanted to send out a quick reminder email about our trip to New Mexico. We will be leaving from our headquarters at 10:00am the address is 5353 N. 16th St. Phoenix, AZ 85016. We have plenty of parking in the parking garage below our building. We will be leaving Albuquerque around 1:00pm on Monday and head back to Phoenix. We will be making a stop in Prescott on our way back to Phoenix to attend McCain’s final rally before the election. They're great. "almost Super Human?" No. "Does'nt a class start out with like 200 and only 32 make it" About 30% usually make it. "How awesome are these guys......" They're a special class of warrior, among the best in the United States military and the world. But you don't have to be a SEAL to be awesome nor even in the military (it helps). And Michael Mansoor was a special kind of man, even among extremely well trained elite special forces commandos. IMHO Posted by: Christoph at October 30, 2008 02:25 PM (hawOV) 36

Monsoor and Murphy are truly heroes. When they commissioned the USS Murphy, I told his and Monsoor's stories to my teenage son. We both teared up. Interesting that every American knows who Audie Murphy was, but they've never heard of these and many other heroes from the last 5 years. I guess the media is different these days... There already is a USS John S. McCain, a destroyer. It's named after the senator's father and grandfather.
I think there are some other Navy ships named after MoH recipients, like the USNS Shughart, named for Army sergeant Randy Shughart. There's also one named for Robert Stethem, the diver who was murdered by terrorists. Such a great tribute, though it still doesn't pay the debt we owe them. Posted by: stace at October 30, 2008 04:07 PM (JO0c/) 56
The Destroyer, USS EDSON, which used to be in New York City next to the Intrepid, was named after famous MOH recipient Red Mike Edson, USMC. He was also a 2 star, and he saved the Marine Corps' entire existence and had a huge role in WWII, so I guess I don't know if the MOH led to the naming honor or not.

Wikipedia is great for ship histories, you'll learn more about the origins of warship names than you'll ever want to know unless you're a severe military/naval history nerd like I am. O/T, I found a manufacturer's web page for those SOCOM-only PCU rain jackets Mansour is wearing in the picture. I picked one up in a trade with a buddy up the street at 5th SF Group, and they totally kick ass. They run about 95 bucks. Posted by: SGT Dan at October 30, 2008 04:33 PM (Q6BTe) 59
So far the other two Navy/Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients from the GWoT have been honored in this way.
USS Michael Murphy USS Jason Dunham With all due respect to the Army and Air Force's ability to honor their fallen, there's really nothing like several thousand tons of American whoop-ass when it comes to honoring these warriors. No doubt. I mean, just about every Army and AF base I can think of is named in honor of a hero. Still, bases don't blow shit up, ships do. I think the coolest thing the Army can do is name a tank after you. Think of the names...Sherman, Patton, Abrams. That's good company for sure. Only downside is it is a once in a couple of generations thing. Posted by: DrewM. at October 30, 2008 08:58 PM (hlYel) 65
It would probably be cooler if the Navy wasn't shit-canning the Zumwalt class after building only three of them...
