| The Least of These"It's that fundamental belief — I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper — that makes this country work." - Barack Obama, July 27, 2004 Good thing he's not his aunt's keeper. Or his half-brother's. What's interesting about Obama's answer is that the term "brother's keeper" comes from the book of Genesis, and its use is actually defensive. Cain had just whacked his brother and when asked about it, his answer was "I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?" Cain was being snarky in an attempt to deflect attention away from the fact that he had just stashed his brother's body. It's not a biblical injunction to take positive action. As Ed Morrissey points out at Hot Air, Obama did mention the biblical call to action on compassion later in the Saddleback forum:“Americans’ greatest moral failure in my lifetime,” he said, “has been that we still don’t abide by that basic precept in Matthew that whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.”In one sense, I agree with Ed's conclusions regarding the importance of this - it's really basically garden-variety hypocrisy on Obama's part given his willingness to accuse the rest of us of being uncharitable. (which, incidentally, is untrue) What makes the story of Obama's aunt appalling to me is a quote that Bob Krumm found. It looks as though Obama's campaign may have found the least of his relatives and told them to zip it until after the election. The media told us that when Obama visited his grandmother, it spoke well of his character. It seems fair to take the living conditions of his extended relatives as a similar glimpse into who this man is, and whether his personal actions match his lofty rhetoric. Comments1
I think it's lame to attack Obama for not financially supporting his aunt as Ed pointed out. His half brother is another story. It would have been nice of Obama to support his aunt, decent, but a lot of people don't support every extended family member they have. I'm sure that includes many here. It includes me.

Obama realizes that he can not be the source of comfort for his own family. That would be unfair to him. Remember what he said about not wanting to burden his daughter with a child if she got pregnant. He assumes his aunt would not want to burden him.
Why is it that Liberals preach to us about compassion with a straight face and all the while do little on their own to help the poor. I love giving my time and money to the less fortunate but am an evil conservative because I don't want the government to do it. The sad thing is, even if they are successful in their coup, we will have more people that will need our compassion. Posted by: locus ceruleus at October 30, 2008 11:28 AM (e2mBS) 8

Don't take an attitude with God. You will lose. And the hypocrisy is doubly ironic knowing that Obammy actually voted several times to leave babies to die if they live thru botched abortions. Tushar, I oppose Marxism definitely. And I admire individual charity. And I agree with the statement charity begins at home.
But philosophically, socialists and Marxists believe in government funding of poor people and therefore they do donate less to charity. But it's apples and oranges. I don't think not supporting extended families is a character issue, it's more of a philosophical one. A shitty philosophy, but just that. On the other hand, if he did support every family member I'd consider that extraordinary, but because it is so rare. For both liberals and conservatives. Slublog brought up, but I think understated somewhat, Ed's position, which seems to be in accordance with mine: "Otherwise, though, this seems unremarkable to me. Judging from my e-mail, it’s a popular link this morning, but most of us have extended family in various economic situations. Applying the same mote-beam-eye standard, how many of us send money to those less fortunate among distant cousins, or even relatively close family? And does this really say anything germane about the vote we all will cast in five days — or will we be more rightly focused on policies and experience?" Charity is a good thing, but since when is it the responsibility of the state? Obama is willing to be generous and charitable with other people's money. When Christ spoke of "that which you do for the least of my brothers," I don't think he was talking to the agents of government; i.e., Pilate or Herod. The state cannot be saved by Christ, only people can. People. Individuals. Persons. I don't think Christ will pour out salvific grace on the House of Representatives or the Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts just because they increase taxes. Seems to me the parable of the unjust judge (Luke 18:1-9) is a more accurate insight into Christ's view of human government -- namely, that the best we can hope for from it is that it will corruptly serve whoever nags it.

Too many people get caught up in poverty or middle class thinking, even on the right. Most people look at middle class as being a virtue whereas I see it as... well... middle. Christoph - what I find interesting in terms of his character is what Tigerhawk (at the EdKrumm link) found. Obama has made much of his extended family and the role they played in shaping him. Much of his campaign narrative is built upon his interesting life story and given his willingness to talk so freely about that family, one could make the assumption they are close.
His benign neglect of those same relatives he brags upon does not speak well of him, in my eyes. Posted by: Slublog at October 30, 2008 11:39 AM (R8+nJ) 28

incognito, that is almost the definition of middle class thinking. I certainly don't mean that as an insult, but by way of encouragement. It is learning how to manage one's money, including regular if modest giving, savings, investing, a certain amount for play, that brings about more money... waiting until the money comes in until doing these things almost guarantees one will never be wealthy. I reiterate -- I say this by way of positive encouragement. If you're interest, might I suggest a book I think you'd enjoy? Posted by: Christoph at October 30, 2008 11:39 AM (hawOV) 29

On the other hand the currency conversions are 1USD = 80 Kenyan shillings. So it shouldn't be all that expensive to afford even a moderate income for his paternal grandmother. And I'm not entirely certain that calling a grandmother "extended family" is all that correct. You are after all talking about a direct bloodline descent. I agree with your basic point. Your point would be crystal clear to everyone here if they won the lottery. All of a sudden third cousins and such would be sending sob stories. But he presents himself as a man above it all. A man who truly cares. A man who is only in government to help people like his aunt. Who he has not helped although he could. Posted by: locus ceruleus at October 30, 2008 11:41 AM (e2mBS) 33
if he had followed the Chicago model, Obama would have sent some patronage his Aunt's way. I'm not saying he shouldn't help her, but with his tremendous political power, he should have gotten her some bennies. Not like the media would object if he engaged in patronage. Since "spreading the wealth" has been the sine qua non of Obama's campaign, it's completely legitimate to bring it up. But McCain should enter a positive, Presidential phase now. Ya’ll are all trying to make this too complicated. The liberal socialists do not give a T-damn about compassion for their fellow man. Neither do they care what it says in the bible, although there are quite a few liberal religious people.
What liberals like O’Bambi care about is implementing State control over everything, with them and their cronies in charge of everything. They decry the capitalist factory owner who “exploits” the labor of the downtrodden worker. But what they wish to replace it with is a State where the apparatchiks are in charge of everything from bread production to toilet paper allotment per household, and they exploit the everyday citizen for power.
When it is all over the average citizen is left mired in squalor and poverty, the leaders live in their dachas and shop in special stores. They are the new “elite” and live a lifestyle equivalent to what our current lower middle class lives now.
This is the legacy of socialism and communism, poverty and squalor, but they always cry “it just hasn’t been really tried yet”. Posted by: Vic at October 30, 2008 11:46 AM (b1ysY) 39

I support my extended family when I can. Of course, unlike Obama, I don't have the advantages of a gross income of nearly a million dollars, close ties with community organizations across the country, or belong to a huge church.
Nor have I written an autobiography using the stories of my relatives to demonstrate my own authenticity and my feelings toward the many evils of our society. I've also refrained from celebrating quotes about how "white folks greed runs a world in need", and I've never told my relatives to keep a low profile and avoid reporters so they don't embarass me in public. And, oddly enough, I've never suggested that having the government take more money away from undeserving "rich" people and spread it around was the solution to any of these problems. But aside from that, my situtation is exactly like Senator Obama's. Posted by: Bryan C at October 30, 2008 11:50 AM (T3KlW) 44
I don't really know what to make of that quote, Slublog. It could be bad and probably is. It's a fair point.
The flipside, though, is she might have been contacted by the campaign (probably was), contacted them, or even (long shot) decided on her own not to say anything until after November 4th. Since she is a free person, that implies to me, poor or not, she must not want to do anything to jeapordize Obama's chances. Unless you have more evidence that the Obama campaign strong-armed her into zipping it (other than asking her to and getting her agreement, which I consider to be fair game), then I'd prefer to attack Obama on any of the numerous serious flaws he has as a candidate... much as Ed Morrissey suggests. I would support a family member whose political philosophy I agreed with even if they never helped me financially while I was broke. By the same token, I'd oppose a close family member if they were Marxist or pro-abortion up to and including campaigning against them. I kid you not. So I accept that Ms. Onyango is doing as she freely chooses until someone shows otherwise. Posted by: Christoph at October 30, 2008 11:51 AM (hawOV) 45

This is the same thing with Obama. He wants to help the "people", a faceless mass or concept. He cares nothing about his own family beyond the immediate members, if that. I'm beginning to believe that support for socialism, communism, far left liberalism is a pretty good marker for a high level of sociopathy. The baseless belief in the goodness or rightness or greatness of self, the thin skinned extreme reaction when that belief is challenged, the lack of concern about the damage their policies cause to others(breaking eggs/omlets, etc.), the belief that othersplans, lives, concerns don't matter if it collides with their plans. anyway, food for thought. But Obama is helping his auntie, the community-organizer way. According to the Boston Globe, she lives in public (subsidized) housing, she has a "nurse" (almost certainly provided by some public or private charitable agency), and she now has a "police guard" due to her new-found fame.
If you read the Times article, she's made a "small stipend" working as "volunteer resident health advocate" for the Boston Housing Authority, and she's obviously not destitute, since she recently make a $260 campaign contribution to her favorite nephew who, as we all know, is desperately in need of funds. And auntie also tells the Times, "“I have been coming to America ever since 1975. I always come and go.” I'm sure she hasn't been swimming back and forth... And IIRC, uncle is believed to own a chain of stores in Boston, according to the Globe, but no one can locate him, or something. Posted by: JBean at October 30, 2008 12:25 PM (hDIOT) 70
R&P, I was stationed in England during the summer of 2003 when Le Heat Wave Mal hit Europe (made me appreciate air conditioning). Thousands of deaths in France were attributed to the heat, and since the UK became fixated on global warming. And I think you're on to the long-term effects of socialism. A mass sociopathy has fallen on British kids as there's a general disdain for any traditional family structures. Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at October 30, 2008 12:26 PM (n2eCn) 71

memomachine, a couple points re: 1. Questions because I don't know the answer:
Do you know that Obama isn't assisting his grandmother? Does his grandmother want assistance? Other than than, I don't have much to say. If I knew the grandmother was so poor as to be unhappy and unhealthy and Barack Obama said, "Tough," I'd think that is a real serious character problem. As it is, I don't know enough about his family situation to know what the real deal is so I'm more concerned with him being a Marxist who announced plans to launch a (by deduction) $500,000,000.00 per annum civilian security agency with weapons and manpower to match the Pentagon. Somehow that seems more relevant. Posted by: Christoph at October 30, 2008 12:29 PM (hawOV) 74

Anyway, off topic, but important enough to appear at Patterico's, L.A. cop pseudonym "Jack Dunphy" has a post which uses a quote to make a point I've been trying to make for ages: Obama, for real, wants more than 8 years in office. In terms of the "brother's keeper" argument, it's true that Obama misinterpreted Cain's classic dodge as a Biblical mandate for the government to take wealth from the rich and give to the poor. But then, surely nobody believed Obama ever understood anything about Christianity. Look where he attended church, for pity's sake! And as for the "least of these" argument, Christ was talking about the necessity for the individual, with his individual conscience, to act charitably toward the needy. Something Obama has never done, with the exception of a big check he cut to the Reverend Wright a couple of years ago. It has absolutely nothing to do with requiring mandatory government largesse. Which big check, by the way, the Reverend Wright put to good use by preaching to AIDS sufferers that they had been intentionally afflicted by the federal government that Obama aspires to lead. It's just mind boggling when I think about it. Posted by: CornFedBeauty at October 30, 2008 01:49 PM (8r/RM) 111
The only possible connection this has to this post is the title, "The Least of These".

"But philosophically, socialists and Marxists believe in government
funding of poor people and therefore they do donate less to charity."
Forked tongue. Socialists/Marxists believe in other people funding the poor. Warren Buffet keeps talking the talk of "wanting to pay more taxes himself" without dishing his fortune to the IRS. Al Franken doesn't even pay his taxes, let alone file his employees federal withholding, not to mention make any contributions to real charities. Though claiming "good intentions" and all, they extract themselves from paying taxes and never quite give to charity. Never has equality been a more hypocritical ideology than seeing Marxism in reality, not in its fairy tale conception. Actions speak louder than words. Obama claims to CARE. Obama promises to provide for the needy as he browbeats America with scriptural references to which he himself doesn't lift a finger to accomplish, namely CHARITY FOR HIS OWN BROTHER, THE LEAST OF THESE MY BROTHERS. Jesus said that what we do and produce is how we will be understood, and how to understand others. Regarding job skills, Obama requires the power to force everyone to take care of Obama's responsibilities for him. Remember, Obama has no accomplishment of his own to date to qualify as POTUS material. He has even failed to care for his own black family who aren't even our responsibility since they are NOT CITIZENS. PATHETIC candidate Obama fraud. Posted by: maverick muse at October 30, 2008 03:22 PM (F1b/5) 120
Because Obama likes Bible quotes, especially ones that shame others, I'd like to point him to this particular verse: 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."* *English Standard Version of the Bible quoted here for clarity. Posted by: bonhomme at October 30, 2008 03:57 PM (rYmoh) 121
I just don't see this as a particularly useful political attack 5 days out.
Oh, if that was your point then I have to agree. Of course, that's why our own press has studiously avoided reporting such stories, because then they would be useful to Obama's opposition. Instead they leave it for the British to dig up just before the election. Most Americans will never even hear about it. Anyway, it's pretty much academic since I don't think McCain intends to use this as an attack. Except maybe as a throwaway line illustrating Obama's economic philosophy in action.
