| About the PollsThe Bradley Effect is merely a subset of the "socially desirable answer" phenomenon. People tend to tell pollsters the socially desirable answer. Here's one simple example: When a pollster is asking if someone is a likely voter, and if they've voted in three of the past three elections, etc., in which way do you imagine people tend to lie? Towards claiming they're reliable, conscientious voters, of course. That's the socially desirable answer. Only a smaller number of people, such as steve_in_hb, are honest enough to state the true socially undesirable answer. In steve_in_hb's case, that answer is "Voting is for fags." But most people, when asked by a stranger, will give the socially desirable answer. Unlikely voters tend to lie and say they're likely voters, or very likely voters. But there's more to it than that. Many pollsters don't just poll elections. They do "voter contact," which means pretty much what it sounds like. They call up likely voters for a particular candidate and tell them all the great things they should know about that candidate. It's not to get information -- it's to give it, and to encourage people to vote for the candidate hiring them to do the contact. Here's the thing; Pollsters try to keep the callers doing voter contact away from also polling on the same race. Why? Because they find that often the callers doing voter contact wind up getting better results in their polling calls in favor of the candidate whose praises they've sung in the previous voter contact calls. Why? Well, the suspicion is that after having repeated so many wonderful things about Candidate X, they've internalized those wonderful things (even if they never heard of Candidate X before making 200 calls on his behalf) and it comes through, when they call to poll someone, who they think is the better candidate. Whether through voice inflection or the like, they give subtle cues as to whom they believe is the better candidate. They tip to the interviewee what the socially desirable answer is to the polling questions. How much of an effect does this have? Well, at minimum, it's enough of an effect that pollsters try to keep voter-contact callers from working on the polls they've done contact on -- so there is an effect. Someone in the field tosses a number to me. This is anecdotal, based upon limited personal experience, and not a scientifically determined number. But in the experience of this person: About half the time, such "cross interference" of praising one candidate and then polling on him results in a 6% rise in the polling results for the "socially desirable" candidate. Gallup and etc. probably are pretty good about not using voter contact callers on polls. In fact, most of the big polling firms probably have so much polling work they don't ever do voter contact calls at all. Their phone banks are exclusively for polls. But that doesn't mean there's not a socially desirable answer being suggested by the callers. For one thing, if you walk into any polling firm phone bank, many of the callers are young. Probably not a majority, but a lot of them. For another thing, all of the callers aren't making a whole lot of money. Calling people on the phone is not a high paying gig. And, of course -- around half of the callers are themselves minorities. Yup, half. Put it all together, and you have all of the nation's pollsters using interviewers who almost certainly skew in political preference to Barack Obama. No, they probably didn't do any voter contact work for Obama, and hence get "poisoned" by repeating his virtues over and over again on the polling company's dime. But a large number of them have probably done so, for free. On their own time. Not because they were paid to call people and tell them how swell Barack Obama is. But because they simply believe it in their hearts. And I really don't think that I need to prove that Obama's supporters tend to be very enthusiastic supporters. Black supporters among the most enthusiastic of all. Does this have an effect on polling? Well, once again: Pollsters are on alert for workers who may have been tainted by doing voter contact. They know such callers get too many positive responses for the candidate they have learned to prefer. But what can they do when 80% of their calling staff walks in through the door with exactly that same taint? They can't do anything. Combine that with the fact that black callers, for example, tend to find more support for black candidates generally when polling. Same deal, really, except more pronounced. If a guy who sounds black asks you who you're voting for, your tendency is not going to be expressing a greater desire to see John McCain elected than you actually might have. I don't know to what extent this impacts the race. But this sort of "contamination" of callers is something polling firms watch out for. And I don't see how they can avoid it when most of their callers are pro-Obama, and a significant fraction of such zealously so.Comments1

The Center for Constitutional Rights — founded by William Kuntsler — is a big fan. The Center for Security Policy reviews Obama's role in securing habeas rights for Guantanamo detainees. Obama made the enemy combatants' defense his personal cause, the lawyers said: "Senator Obama worked with us to count the votes, and he personally lobbied colleagues who worried about the political ramifications of voting to preserve habeas corpus for the men held at Guantanamo." --- William Kuntsler is the Weatherman LAWYER - super bud to Ayers. Makes sense. It also explains some of the actions from the Obama camp (spending so much time in PA for example). They don't fuck around with internal polling, and what they're seeing is not so wonderful for them.
At the same time the external polls that show Obama +5 or +8 are very useful for depressing Republican turnout. Plus, after McCain wins every fool on Obama's side will claim "OMFG TEH POLLZ!!!" while the lawsuits ramp up. Poll: Bustamante leading Schwarzenegger Aug 26, 2003 - Free Lance wire services California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante has a significant lead over actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the race to succeed Gov. Gray Davis, according to a new poll. Of 801 likely voters surveyed by the Los Angeles Times, 35 percent backed Bustamante, a Democrat, and 22 percent supported Schwarzenegger, a Republican. Poll data released by the Times showed 50 percent support the effort to oust Davis and 45 percent oppose it. The new numbers for Bustamante differ from others released lately. Surveys by the Public Policy Institute of California and Field Poll showed Bustamante and Schwarzenegger within five percentage points of each other. Behind Schwarzenegger in the Times poll were three other Republicans: state Sen. Tom McClintock, with 12 percent; former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, with 7 percent; and Bill Simon, with 6 percent. Simon, who won the Republican primary last year but lost to Davis by five percentage points in November, backed out of the race Saturday. He said his decision to withdraw was based on his belief that there were "too many Republicans" in the race, and the poll results may bear that out. Six out of 10 Democrats said they had decided who to support in the recall. Posted by: funky chicken at October 29, 2008 03:07 PM (xyyHG) 13

There may be something to this. I had a call the other night for a poll, and based on the script it was a legitimate poll, not one done on behalf of a campaign. The language was very neutral. The caller sounded like a black gentleman and he spoke in a sort of neutral friendly (professional) tone of voice. When I replied that I was definitely voting for McCain (there were like five choices, ranging from definitely voting for Obama to definitely voting for McCain), there was a very subtle change in his tone. Not hostile, not less professional, but just slightly less friendly.

I'd be curious to poll McCain supporters to find out what percentage DO NOT show public support (signs, bumperstickers, buttons, etc.) because they feel being labeled as racist. Many likely keep their vote secret to avoid the social stigma. I suspect the numbers are higher than we would guess. The reason I say that is because locally I see 2-1 yard signs supporting Obama over McCain in a very red county. Somebody should run that poll. I answered a Rasmussen poll last week. It was entirely an automated poll, where a recorded voice asked very straight-forward questions, and I answered by pushing 1,2,3, or 4 on my phone. It seemed like a very efficient way to conduct a poll, to me.

But really...there are no undecided voters anymore. With all the getting in the faces from the Obots, when a person asks for whom you are voting, there are only three acceptable answers right now: 1. Obama, of course. I am neither a dullard nor a racist, you know. 2. I haven't decided yet. (but I will vote for McCain and I don't want you getting in my face and judging me.) 3. McCain/Palin. The staff thing explains why BO consistently overpolled during the primary (in addition to the fact that I believe the pollsters were slanted for him in the first place). But, the so-called "Bradley Effect" is a lot of horseshit that has been debunked -- the only reason the msm keep talking about it as if it was real is because it became one of BO's talking points after NH (ie. no one could have possibly preferred Hillary to him; they had to be racists). In the Bradley race, Bradley actually got the # of votes the polling projected him getting -- the "surprise" factor was the extremely high turn out by conservative/Republican voters who came out not to "vote against the black guy" but to vote on a proposition concerning gun rights. The pollsters failed to take that turnout into account when conducting the polls. Likewise, in NH, BO actually got the # of votes the polling projected him getting -- the "surprise" factor was the margin that the undecideds broke for Hillary.

The media has also put a stigma with Palin. She is ridiculed by the media frequently. If you support someone who is the subject of ridicule you might invite ridicule on yourself. Trust me. I live in a very blue region. I keep my support of Palin to myself.
Pollsters cannot use automated calls to force voters out of the undecided category. For that they have to use real people. Posted by: robtron12 at October 29, 2008 03:20 PM (gue+Q) 40
I had a call earlier today that was from the AP. It was a black lady doing the interview. After I answered who I was voting for (Barack) her demeanor was less guarded. She spoke less professionally I guess you could say.

You know I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the Obamathon is supposed to accomplish tonight. It's a terrible waste of money and won't sway a single voter. But I think I see now. It's simply there to give the push polls made to favor Obama a reason to go up again in the final days. Obama never had a 10 point lead anywhere outside a blue state and they know it. They had to figure the pollsters would cover their ass at some point and reflect the "tightening" just prior to election day. The Obamathon gives a reason and legitimacy to the crap polls the MSM will push over the next few days.

#26 I live in Houston in a suburban neighborhood that is in a heavy democrat district. My neighborhood is racially diverse, but over 50% black. I am shocked at the complete lack of yard signs or bumper stickers for the One. I had a McCain sign out that got stolen the first night, and have not replaced it. Just did not want the hassle, and also didn't want to shoot anyone. I am reasonably sure this area will vote for BO, but they would vote demo regardless. It just strikes me as odd that there are no visible signs of support for BO.

I mentioned this in a thread below, but I think I should repeat it. I'll also Open Blog it on Monday or so.
The corollary to what Ace says above is this: This year will have the worst exit polls of all time. I guarantee stuff like the "Barry +19%" silliness we saw earlier will be routine. And it won't even necessarily be intentional, just... Who's going to admit "Yes, I voted like the hillbilly racist redneck I am!" to some scruffy college kid doing exits? What will be intentional is the press releasing or "leaking" them to depress GOP turnout. Fortunately, we've already had a dry run at ignoring this shit in 2004 (when, btw, Ace was wetting himself...). Perhaps it might have the opposite effect? That would be hilarious. I fully expect every exit-poll based "call" on TV coverage to be wrong as well, all in the Obama direction. Several states will be prematurely called for Barry -- incorrectly. Of course, if you see a bunch of early calls for *McCain*, you'll probably also notice the anchors crying because it's a GOP landslide. I wouldn't bet on that however. I don't think we'll know who won any key early states until full tallies come in. Last time Jay Cost did a great job identifying bellwether counties and districts to see what was going to happen when Ohio was fully tallied. This year, the various electorate models may be too odd and contradictory for that... But I hope not. Posted by: someone at October 29, 2008 03:24 PM (zHoxL) 45

Let's just look at the polling data in the primaries when a black man and a white woman were running against each other. Did the individuals polled think "do i say i'm a racist or say i'm a sexist?"
(Nobody asked, "is the pollster's methodology flawed?") We can treat the polls as a black box and just look at the difference between the opinion polls and the actual polls. And they showed there were about 5-7% fewer "sexists" (i.e. anti-Hillary voters) than the pollsters supposed. Ergo, let's rename the Bradley effect the "inverse-Hillary effect." To refer to poll results of tickets skewed by the sexism occasioned by the inclusion of a woman on the ticket. Why yes, i do have my tongue in my cheek. I don’t put up signs in my yard and I don’t put bumper stickers on my car or truck. The reason being is that they are an invitation for mischief by the “other side” who appear to be very prone to that mischief.
I just read a news article about some guy in OH who had his yard signs vandalized and decided to take action. When the next time occurred he fores several shots at the “teens” in a car escaping. He wounded one of them in the arm with the .22 he was using and he will now likely go to jail for a long time. Posted by: Vic at October 29, 2008 03:41 PM (b1ysY) 77

I suggest commenter registration
Townhall has had registration for years and it is virtually overrun with trolls now. They have tried to ban a few people but it is fairly easy to get around the ban protocols. What is funny is they do have a filter that prohibits racial and vulgar language. The problem is that they only ban for hard core flame wars and really offensive posts. At the point they are now, there are as many trolls as there normal conservative posters.
The registration does make people sort of keep to one name and you can learn who the trolls are and just scroll by them. The problem is that you have so many to scroll by it gets to the point that it is not worth the effort.
Bottom line is that commenter registration will help in some ways but it is easily defeated and it makes other things difficult. Posted by: Vic at October 29, 2008 03:50 PM (b1ysY) 89
The exit polls in the Dem primary overstated support for Obama by about 7% because Obama supporters were more inclined to talk to exit pollsters. I wouldn't be surprised if both the polls and the exit polls in the general election are off by about the same margin. Those who agree to take part in any type of poll are a self-selected group.

I don't give a damn if someone calls me a racist. I just don't want my property damaged or be spit on.
Heck, I don't want to be damaged. I work in a part of Milwaukee where twice in the last year drivers have been pulled out of their cars and beaten, and I prefer not to give anyone a "reason" for attacking me. I'm not kidding about the poll, but I was kidding about not voting. Of course I'll vote. I had to get my dad to the lab for blood work and then to the doctor to fill out the medical section of his absentee ballot (he's 85 and getting him to cooperate is like herding cats). Then I hand delivered the application. I called the Bureau of Elections today because he still hasn't received his ballot (or so I thought). It turned out they mailed it on the 21st and I had to go through a ton of papers today to find his ballot because the one day I didn't get the mail he got it and buried his ballot in a bunch of junk mail. I'll fill it out for him and mail it tomorrow. Dragging my own sorry ass to the poll will be a lot easier than that. I just hate this state going Democrat every f*****g election. It does get on my nerves. I just hope I can at least get the consolation prize of kicking out Paul Kanjorski and replacing him with Lou Barletta. I'm interested to see how Obama's infomercial will affect the real poll numbers. Baseball fans might be irritated at having to wait 30 minutes for 1st pitch, or they just might be curious. Will it be a net positive for Team Barry? Impossible to say. However, he'll show how the Amerikkka is such a horrible place and that he's the one with the plan to fix it all.
As for me, I plan to go for a 6-mile run to avoid any contact with the television during that time. I've had enough of that fucking asshole's bullshit and the MSM's dick sucking lack of coverage of his skeletons, any of which would be sufficient to end his campaign. The undecideds in this election are really just intimidated Republicans, or Republicans who frankly don't like McCain much and wish Obama wasn't such a leftie. For these folks, they want to vote for Obama, but ultimately wont. You see, there is a great attraction for many people about Obama, he's the cool guy were supposed to be supporting and frankly many people want to support him. Its peer pressure, if it feels good then do it. But then theres that little voice in their head that is telling them "well his pastor is a little nuts and is he really going to raise my taxes?" I also think the media is hurting Obama, the American people expect SOME fairness from those guys and they aren't getting it. I know they are trying to help Obama but I think when you combine the Obama media with the silly infomerical tonight its going to be overload for the "undecideds" and they will come back home to McCain. Thats my prediction for what it is worth.

I do not understand why anyone tells these pollsters anything.
I have never gotten a a call, probably because I don't have a land line and don't answer calls unless I know who is calling. But, if I somehow got caught out, I would tell 'em to jam their poll up their posterior sideways. Same for an exit poll worker. With a "pound sand, twinkie", for good measure. Posted by: TJ at October 29, 2008 04:13 PM (OJ/fY) 107
Exactly 105, I think a lot of people feel that way. I supported Romney in the primaries and after the insane treatment he received by McCain and Huckabee I was planning on just sitting the election out. But then I started looking into Obama and understanding that even though I can't stand McCain, I became fully on board. It the Democratic candidate was someone like former congressman Harold Ford Jr., someone who is African American but fairly moderate, I probably would not have been nearly as passionate about this election. But once I understood who Obama was and realized just how in the tank our media is, I became an avid McCain supporter. Because frankly, there was no choice in the matter.

Tinian, if the McCain campaign thought that he was really down by 12 percent, they wouldn't be visiting the state at all, let alone crisscrossing it. If McCain is really down at all, it ain't by much, and I can see him taking the state. Back when I was pulling data for pollsters, you didn't ask people if they were likely voters, you checked their voting record. (That's not kept by the State of California, but we kept the information for the past elections.) Voter history was the key element used in deciding who to contact for most campaigns: You don't waste your resources on someone who's never voted in a municipal election if you're running in a municipal election. For the General, you'd pull people who had voted 3/4, 4/4, 7/8 of the past 2/4-year elections. You might or might not pull new registrants. Usually the under 25 crowd was treated separately, or not at all. I don't know how that relates to national polling, but that's how it's done in California. Posted by: moviegique at October 29, 2008 04:25 PM (1y5Vr) 110
yes t hat's how they do it... but people lie about that.

There's a difference when you're specifically targeting voters from the state's lists and when you're calling random phone numbers. national polls call random phone numbers. Posted by: ace at October 29, 2008 04:38 PM (1WR4H) 113

#47. The answer is that it depends on the context. I live in West Hollywood, near the Palin effigy. I have no problem telling people I'm Republican; in fact the reactions are amusing. At work I try to avoid it because I'm in a largely Black neighborhood. Lots of Obama buttons and bumper stickers. (Anecdotally, I'm seeing far fewer of those this time around.in West Hollywood. In 2004 we were awash in Kerry/Edwards stickers and signs. There is one Obama bumper sticker in my building's garage.) It's all kind of interesting. As an aside, I told my boyfriend a couple of weeks ago that if Obama isn't up by 10 points this weekend, he'll lose. So, we'll see. Posted by: RR Ryan at October 29, 2008 05:05 PM (DypYN) 118

I live in Virginia and have been polled twice in the last two weeks. One was an automated poll that asked simple questions such as: Who are you voting for? What is your political affiliation? Are you pro-life? No ambiguity there. The other was a live person, who asked a few questions about the general election, but it was mostly about the local election for mayor. The questions were like: Do you agree with candidate X that our schools should be heated during the harsh Virginia winter? Or do you support candidate Y's position that parents should have their kids "layer up"? I was informed at the end that this was a poll conducted for candidate X. Does bias like this happen in general election polls? Another thought..My husband and I are both registered republicans, have donated to McCain/Palin and are likely voters. Would they even bother to poll us? If not, do they count people like us? Posted by: Micina at October 29, 2008 05:44 PM (1XVGa) 121

I'd be curious to poll McCain supporters to find out what percentage DO NOT show public support (signs, bumperstickers, buttons, etc.) because they feel being labeled as racist. Many likely keep their vote secret to avoid the social stigma. I bet there are a lot of folks out there like that. Not only has Pravda been shilling for Obama non-stop since he won the Iowa Caucuses, they’ve been vilifying McCain as “running the sleaziest campaign ever” and labeling Palin a dumb, corrupt, racist chillbilly. So admitting you’re voting for McCain/Palin puts you at risk for personal criticism or worse. A lot of people just don’t want to deal with that crap. (Thank god for secret ballots) RE: The polls and the Bradley Effect It bothers me that the left leaning media has always interpreted this “effect” as white people getting second thoughts about voting for a black person once they’re in the voting booth. The “I didn’t want to admit I wasn’t going to vote for the black person” interpretation has always made more sense to me. When is someone in the MSM going to openly admit that the racist label is a powerful and deeply destructive social sanction? Maybe it’s a generational thing. The MSM is still dominated by boomers that watched the Civil Rights movement in real time. Maybe that makes them more sensitive (I’d say even hyper-sensitive) to the threat of racism. Gen Xs and younger people grew up with political correctness. Many of us see political correctness as an equally serious threat. (The totalitarian left is not satisfied with protecting minorities and women from intolerant actions (e.g., promoting a man over a more qualified woman, refusing to sell a home to a qualified black family, etc.). They actually want to stamp out intolerant thoughts. I just find that creepy as hell.) One of the things I hate about the MSM’s interpretation of the “Bradley Effect” is that a lot of black people may end up feeling dejected and disenfranchised by an Obama loss because they’ll see it as confirmation of American racism. It’s just as likely (IMO, more likely) that an Obama loss is evidence of the perverse effect of liberal fascism and political correctness on speech. McCain/Palin supporters will be labeled evil racists and the liberal totalitarians that spurred a backlash and created so much heartache will stand there in judgment, “tsk tsk”ing (or raging like maniacs on DailyKos). I have done the sort of work that Ace is writing about as a caller and a supervisor. In my experience the outfit is small with around 3-4 full time employees to do the analysis and a few more like me who were called in as needed. No more than a dozen regulars total. The owners are always scrambling to get projects. If they're lucky, they have a connection to a campaign or politician whom they can count on for steady work every 2-4 years. The people I worked with were, for the most part, working in the evenings as an easy second job or were college/ high school students. They are given about 15 minutes of training and none of it has to do with inducing a biased response (voice inflection, speaking clearly). Training usually involves going through the questionnaire 2-3 times to familiarize them with the survey flow. The turnover rate in these places is ridiculous. In a class of 30 new hires, I've had half of them leave during their first break and never come back. The usual expectation is that none of the rest will last more than a month before they head back to Taco Bell or another pollign outfit. Second thing is there is usually some sort of prize or bonus involved for completing the most interviews. These people are making >$12/hr. for 20-30 hours a week, so hitting the bonus means an extra $20-25 tax free. This is an aspect that's important because if someone hangs up mid-interview (happens a lot), that doesn't count towards the bonus/prize total so, the interviewers just sort of finish it up and hope they don't get caught. And, even if they do get caught, it's likely to be overlooked. Believe it or not, it's sort of hard to find people willing to call up complete strangers and ask them questions during prime time. Third, that faked survey counts toward the overall goal even if it's a known fake because there is usually a goal that has to be met and there's probably another project waiting to be started. The thought is 1 bad survey out of 500-600 isn't going to make that much of a difference in the results. But (just to name a few factors) faked surveys, women with cute/sexy voices getting the bonus every night, asking questions in a certain tone of voice, the type of people that are willing to do surveys, the turn of events during the polling, all these biases gets mixed into the same pot. Not a single survey is without one or more of these biases. Saying the MOE is +/- 3.5% and whether it actually is, is not truly possible to know. Posted by: CozMark at October 29, 2008 07:58 PM (Pk0V9) 131
When you factor in the Bradley Effect AND the over-sampling of Democrats in most polls (such as Rasmussen), McCain is doing about 5% better than what most surveys say. Thus, a poll that is 52-48 against McCain actually means Mac is ahead 53-47. And that's probably what we will see election night.

My favorite approach with this kind of thing is to string them along. I'm (usually) honest up front and tell them my intentions.. in the case of sales people, I tell them I'm not going to buy. When they push, I then tell them I'll listen. Since I write software, I actually continue to work while they attempt to sell me. I respond weakly or agree with them, but generally try to string them along as long as I possibly can. Then, at the end, I point out to them that my position hasn't changed. why not just go to a site that a) uses a computer model to construct a
"score" from a LOT of different polls (guaranteed to be more accurate
than ANY single poll could ever be)
Or more inaccurate for compounding all the errors. Or just average accurate for ameliorating the worst but adulterating the best.
