Washington Post Hits Obama's Shady Donations Again... Weakly

A little better than last time, but apparently they still haven't heard of AVS, or the fact that you don't need a prepaid credit card to "fool" Obama's insecurity system.

Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign is allowing donors to use largely untraceable prepaid credit cards that could potentially be used to evade limits on how much an individual is legally allowed to give or to mask a contributor's identity, campaign officials confirmed.

Faced with a huge influx of donations over the Internet, the campaign has also chosen not to use basic security measures to prevent potentially illegal or anonymous contributions from flowing into its accounts, aides acknowledged. Instead, the campaign is scrutinizing its books for improper donations after the money has been deposited.

The Obama organization said its extensive review has ensured that the campaign has refunded any improper contributions, and noted that Federal Election Commission rules do not require front-end screening of donations.

In recent weeks, questionable contributions have created headaches for Obama's accounting team as it has tried to explain why campaign finance filings have included itemized donations from individuals using fake names, such as Es Esh or Doodad Pro. Those revelations prompted conservative bloggers to further test Obama's finance vetting by giving money using the kind of prepaid cards that can be bought at a drugstore and cannot be traced to a donor.

The problem with such cards, campaign finance lawyers said, is that they make it impossible to tell whether foreign nationals, donors who have exceeded the limits, government contractors or others who are barred from giving to a federal campaign are making contributions.

"They have opened the floodgates to all this money coming in," said Sean Cairncross, chief counsel to the Republican National Committee. "I think they've made the determination that whatever money they have to refund on the back end doesn't outweigh the benefit of taking all this money upfront."

The Obama campaign has shattered presidential fundraising records, in part by capitalizing on the ease of online giving. Of the $150 million the senator from Illinois raised in September, nearly $100 million came in over the Internet.

Lawyers for the Obama operation said yesterday that their "extensive back-end review" has carefully scrubbed contributions to prevent illegal money from entering the operation's war chest. "I'm pretty sure if I took my error rate and matched it against any other campaign or comparable nonprofit, you'd find we're doing very well," said Robert Bauer, a lawyer for the campaign. "I have not seen the McCain compliance staff ascending to heaven on a cloud."

McCain has AVS enabled, asshole.

Why don't you?

...

Juan Proaño, whose technology firm handled online contributions for John Edwards's presidential primary campaign, and for John F. Kerry's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee in 2004, said it is possible to require donors' names and addresses to match those on their credit card accounts. But, he said, some campaigns are reluctant to impose that extra layer of security.

"Honestly, you want to have the least amount of hurdles in processing contributions quickly," Proaño said.

They then go on to note that McCain has had bad names in his donor's list-- missing the point that names are hard to check. Addresses are not. And Obama doesn't even have the easy-peasy-lemon-squeezey AVS working.

Thanks to Dan.

Were the two skinheads arrested in the Obama plot connected to a couple or three regular commenters here?

Cuz they sure 'nough look an awful like the kind of sort of fellows who would.

I've never had a problem with diderot's dog before, but are you going to let him get away with saying your commenters are Obama assassination plotters... and skinheads to boot?

That is way over the pale. I think he could use some time in the dogpound at least until after the Inauguration.

I expect that the media will start coming out with a few stories here and there that are more critical of the Vomit, or at least ones that don’t bow down and worship him quite as hard. It is virtually too late to harm him with most of his voters unless you have a major “killer” article. They have to now recover some degree of credibility after two years of obvious propaganda.

But the Politico is stubbornly refusing to make an attempt here. Obviously they are a Soros outfit and are not worries about funding. The latest from The Politico is “we’re centrists with a slightly liberal tilt”. If that phrase isn’t bad enough, they follow that up with “but so what?”. The problem is that McCain’s campaign sucks.

Well, McCain’s campaign strategy may indeed suck but that doesn’t account for the hit pieces attacking Palin, the lies about both of them, and the fawning worship of everything associated with the vomit. It also doesn’t explain the jiggered polls.

My feeling after this election cycle is fuck the media. I have always, or at least since the late 60s, doubted a lot of what they had to say but now I don’t believe anything they say. If they had a news release about a study that said the sun was coming up in the East in the morning I would expect the end of times because I would know the East was a lie.

I have never seen the media so completely in the tank for one candidate in my entire life, and I've been watching elections since the sixties.

But please don't call them the "liberal media."  I'm a liberal, they're just paid hacks and whores.

14 Even Alec Baldwin at Huffington Post is making more sense than Politico and the MSM:

"You're kidding, right? The woman is the Vice Presidential nominee of one of the two major parties in this country. Don't put her on SNL? With all of her exposure and the Tina Fey performance? What reality are you in?"

Sarah was a good sport on SNL, and Tina Fey has her impersonation nailed.  The look, the voice, everything.

16 Washington Post is just using this weak ass article as a way to say they actually covered something negative for Obama (PBUH).

I have now stopped watching all news programs and refuse to click on the Wash Post, the NY and LA times websites.

I loathe the media at this point. I am with Vic above. They are that pathetic.

I won't click on Politico either. Sycophantic dilweeds.

At this late date Senator McCain is a mere shadow of his former self.

He is reminiscent of a fussy olde hen in the chicken coop. He pecks a little here and he pecks a little there and clucks incessantly about Obama’s personal foibles and past religious and political acquaintances like Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers; who cares?

Mac has plenty of religious and political skeletons rattling ‘round in his sea trunk to boot.

McCain's message is helter-skelter with little rhyme or reason. Another day brings a different theme or a different iteration of his position last month, last week or even yesterday.

His abysmal approach to the Bush and Paulson handling of the Wall Street bailout is a prime example of unfocused, political dumb foolery.

His supposed progressive meme concerning “Joe the Plumber” and “redistribution of the wealth” is another looser; McCain brings no personal, historical or political credibility to support his new liberal sermonizing.

Unfortunately for McCain in the final days of this presidential campaign; he continues to perform like an olde hen cackling to himself and his clutch of henhouse followers.

Now the latest issue here concerns the source of Obama’s political donations…

Huh…yah gotta be kiddin’ us!

You’re a “month late and million dollars short” soldier...better luck in 2012.

The really sad thing about the press in this country is that people have fought and died to insure we have a free press. The SCOTUS has given them virtual immunity from libel suit to assure they are free and unfettered to investigate and print (broadcast) “investigative” material. A free press, along with freedom of speech and association, were considered cornerstones of freedom. That is why they were covered in the 1st amendment. It is sad that we have squandered this freedom, along with the others such as private property and the right to keep and bear arms.

In the early days of the country the press used this freedom AND they were just as biased then as they are now. Indeed, newspapers selected individual candidates and supported them thoroughly, printing lies that for the time were worse than the lies that have been printed about Palin.

The difference between then and now is that then there were literally hundreds of papers in the major cities and more throughout the country. Now the newspapers have all merged, the networks have never been more than a few, and ALL of the MFs are in the tank for the Dems.

It just makes my ass want to chew tobacco and spit (old quote from my great grandmother who was born during reconstruction).

Well, I posted in another thread that if Soros and the commies are able to steal enough votes here we will be in for a huge shift to taxes and socialism, as well as a new series of the Dark Ages.

You are already gradually losing freedoms everyday, including that ability to “cling to those guns and bibles”. Everyday they chip away at them with new restrictions and regulations. Eventually you will lose them and the average “frog” will never know that the water was approaching the boiling point. At that time the only way to save it will be for the “frogs” to hit the streets.

Currently it appears that the only way to save the Republic is a new Constitutional convention. If it reaches the point of “hitting the streets” we will not only be in for a bloodbath in which everybody loses, but since we don’t have the quality of citizenry that we had in the 1700s we will likely turn into just another banana republic with a “leader for life”.

I would like something better for my grandchildren.

Sure its free. If Bush went in and shutdown the New York Times because they printed obvious lies about him that would be a press that is not free.

A press that prints lies agoinst one party and lies for one other party is nothing more than a propaganda arm for the one other party.

44 On any major issue, whether it be politics, religion, or some other, there will always be people you disagree with. Opponents (I hate to use the word enemy when I am talking about fellow Americans) fall into two categories, those you can respect, and those you can not. In the case of Obama, not only does he support policies that I cannot abide, but he is an unprincipled low life. He has proven on various opportunites that he is not trustworthy. This instance with the credit card fund raising, with Acorn, with the promise to accept federal funding and then going back on that promise, with Ayers, and who knows how many more cases, Obama is a complete scrounge. That he can even be considered a viable candidate tells me that we have really digressed as a nation.

47 The issue that I would like answered, that I see raised repeatedly by reference in countless articles and comments but never directly addressed, is Obama's supposed intellect.  "Brilliant", "Insightful", "Quick", "Sharp", or whatever word is dropped casually to describe him without substantiation whatsoever.  I'm fully aware that, per Ms. Coulter, the fastest way to get described as a super-genius by the press is to run as a Democrat, but this level of suck is beyond the pale (is that racist?).

Besides all that, I'd like to thank Ace and all his moron droogs for this fine site.  This is my home page and primary news link jumping off point.  I don't normally get to comment here because I live overseas in Bahrain and when I try commenting from there my comments die a sad quiet death.  Since I'm on vacation here in the states (and voting for all the right people) I get this wonderful opportunity to say thanks to all of you.

Welcome to the comments, Kyle!

This story is the one that has me yelling at the computer. When your morals are flexible, shit like this makes sense.

Oh, they're just doing the checking at a different point. No, every other online site uses AVS for good reason. They have a motive for turning it off.

Oh, they're refunding the money. Riiiight, Doodad Pro answers the phone and finds out he can use his gift card again, so he has his money back.

Oh, they check the names and addresses. No, AVS confirms that the credit card matches the name and address. They are checking "John Smith" of "New York, NY" to make sure he hasn't given before and presto he hasn't. The fact that he and 10 other donors all used the credit card of Jane Smith doesn't pop up. Because they don't keep the credit card numbers, right?

Motive? Putting 2 + 2 together? Asking questions instead of basically publishing press releases? Why would anyone do that??

Posted by: MamaAJ at October 29, 2008 10:10 AM (X6Zdh)

49 Obviously Matthew Mosk doesn't think there's a chance of Obama losing. Same goes for Campbell Brown who finally decides to mention Obama not keeping his word about public financing of his campaign.

Also in Washington Post is a story called "The Real Problem with Obama's Tax Plan". Even Politico is getting brave and posting some critical stories.

50 I don't know Ace. The quotes from the Obama campaign hack are so unbelievable it makes them look like sociopaths.

"Name-matching is not a standard check conducted or made available in the credit card processing industry..."  WHAAHAHAAHHTT?

And then they go to the company that Edwards used for his credit card transactions.

"Honestly, you want to have the least amount of hurdles in processing contributions quickly," Proaño said.

But of course you do, sugartits. Note the preface, "Honestly." That's quite a dangling tell.

Posted by: adamthemad at October 29, 2008 10:58 AM (aVVGO)

51

The problem is not the bogus names per se, but rather the bogus address/zip information. A card authorization attempt with an incorrect cardholder name (but everything else correct) will usually get authorized by the processor.

This is because names vary too much from the original credit card application and it would cause too many rejections. For example, people often write down their full legal name on a credit card app but later forget and use their colloquial name on a charge. For example lets say a guy applies for a credit card using his legal name, say, Charles Frederrick O'Brien. Later he charges Internet purchases with the name Charlie O'Brien, or Charles OBrien. Because of the high frequency of such errors the credit card industry generally does not scrutinize the name closely.

AVS has nothing to do with names.  It checks only numbers: the street address and the zip.  It returns one of four responses: address match, zip match, both match, or neither match.  If neither match is explains why (foreign non-US bank, anonymous card, etc.)

The Obama people (and the lefty blogs) are blowing smoke about the incorrect names.   "McCain takes fake names too!  See it is the same thing!"  No it is not.  It is the failure to turn on AVS that is the real scandal.
