ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: Joe Wurzelbacher, aka 笛oe the Plumber,� will campaign tomorrow in Ohio for Senator John McCain.

Wurzelbacher, the Toledo-area native, will go on a bus tour with former Rep. Rob Portman, a close McCain supporter, and a number of small business people.

It will be the first time Wurzelbacher has been out to campaign for the McCain ticket since he approached Barack Obama some weeks back to ask about Obama痴 tax policy, and became a part of McCain痴 stump speech.

McCain, and his running mate Sarah Palin, have made 笛oe the Plumber� a central part of their campaign, mentioning him at nearly every stop as a way of illustrating how, they argue, Barack Obama痴 tax plans will affect average Americans.

It assigns responsibility to ensure compliance to the state's "chief election officer," which in Ohio is Secretary Brunner, and obliges state public assistance agencies, like Ohio's Department of Job and Family Services, to provide voter registration services as part of their program duties.

In response to evidence that Ohio has blatantly disregarded this aspect of the NVRA, state officials have said, 'Not my problem.' In court today, both Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Helen Jones-Kelley, Director of the DJFS, tried to deflect responsibility to local officials around the state rather than using their own powers, authority, and resources to fix the widespread systemic statewide problems. Brunner's counsel even went so far as to say that, if the Secretary were to be held responsible to ensure compliance, the NVRA would be a 'burden' to the office. It is inconceivable that there is no state official with the power to ensure the state's compliance with state responsibilities.

God forbid that the performance of your job duties should become a burden. These have got to count among the laziest government officials in the country.

It's sad - even in this thread you can see how Strickland has successfully brainwashed Republicans in Ohio into supporting him. He's turning into one of the worst governors in Ohio history, overseeing a historic decline in the state, and his answer is to create $125k/year positions for Republicans legislators to bribe them to drop out of tough legislative races so he can take over the state House of Representatives. Then he can pass more revisions to prevailing wage laws to funnel more dough to his union goons.

And around 20% of Republicans think this is awesome because they hated Ken Blackwell or something. It's really frustrating.

Anyone who is pissed at Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner for her objectively pro voter fraud stance should be equally pissed at Governor Strickland for endorsing and supporting her.

Over three hundred people attended the first of two Town Meetings on Economic Insecurity on February 25 in Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago. Entitled "Employment and Survival in Urban America", the meeting was sponsored by the UofC DSA Youth Section, Chicago DSA and University Democrats. The panelists were Toni Preckwinkle, Alderman of Chicago's 4th Ward; Barack Obama, candidate for the 13th Illinois Senate District; Professor William Julius Wilson, Center for the Study of Urban Inequality at the University of Chicago; Professor Michael Dawson, University of Chicago; and Professor Joseph Schwartz, Temple University and a member of DSA's National Political Committee.

The meeting demonstrated that economic insecurity is an issue not exclusive to Buchanan Republicans. It is a vital issue for the left as well. More than that, it illustrated that, unlike the Right, the democratic left has a number of potential solutions that go beyond mere demagoguery.

Alderman Preckwinkle began the discussion by observing that the Chicago City Council rarely takes up the great issues facing the city even when it is presented with legislation dealing with these issues. Hearings are not held. Legislation rarely makes it out of committee.

As examples, she used Alderman Joe Moore's (49th) Privatization Ordinance which was introduced last year and the Jobs and Living Wage Ordinance which will be formally introduced in the Council very soon.

The Privatization Ordinance (see January - February, 1995, New Ground, page 1) was a modest effort to regulate the manner in which city services were privatized. It would have made the process accountable and made sure savings were not accomplished at the expense of employees. The measure was consigned to oblivion in committee. While a majority of the Council "supported" the ordinance, an attempt to release it from committee failed for lack of votes.

The Jobs and Living Wage Ordinance (see January - February, 1996, New Ground, page 10) is a more ambitious attempt to require city contractors to pay a minimum living wage. The measure will be formally introduced into the Council in April or May. Alderman Preckwinkle was not optimistic about its prospects although the presence of the Democratic National Convention may provide some opportunities for better leverage.

Barack Obama observed that Martin Luther King's March on Washington in the 1960s wasn't simply about civil rights but demanded jobs as well. Now the issue is again coming to the front, but he wished the issue was on the Democratic agenda not just on Buchanan's.

One of the themes that has emerged in Barack Obama's campaign is "what does it take to create productive communities", not just consumptive communities. It is an issue that joins some of the best instincts of the conservatives with the better instincts of the left. He felt the state government has three constructive roles to play.

The first is "human capital development". By this he meant public education, welfare reform, and a "workforce preparation strategy". Public education requires equality in funding. It's not that money is the only solution to public education's problems but it's a start toward a solution. The current proposals for welfare reform are intended to eliminate welfare but it's also true that the status quo is not tenable. A true welfare system would provide for medical care, child care and job training. While Barack Obama did not use this term, it sounded very much like the "social wage" approach used by many social democratic labor parties. By "workforce preparation strategy", Barack Obama simply meant a coordinated, purposeful program of job training instead of the ad hoc, fragmented approach used by the State of Illinois today.

The state government can also play a role in redistribution, the allocation of wages and jobs. As Barack Obama noted, when someone gets paid $10 million to eliminate 4,000 jobs, the voters in his district know this is an issue of power not economics. The government can use as tools labor law reform, public works and contracts.

Finally, Illinois needs an industrial strategy. How do we create more jobs for everyone? Illinois has no strategy for encouraging high wage, high productivity jobs.

Professor Wilson's presentation was based on his forthcoming book, When Work Disappears: the World of the New Urban Poor. William Julius Wilson began by demanding that the left not be intimidated by the Contract on America and how it has limited the terms of the debate. What we need, he asserted, was a jobs policy based roughly on the New Deal's WPA. The work would concentrate on badly needed infrastructure maintenance and improvement. It would be a universal program; the jobs would be available to everyone, "including Donald Trump" if he chose to do some useful work for a change. These would be new jobs. State and local government would not be allowed to subsidize their own budgets the way they did with CETA in the 1970s.

Professor Dawson spoke on how critical the issues facing this country have become. Not only have the problems themselves become severe, but the politics resulting from them have become a danger to freedom and democracy.

DSA member Joe Schwartz brought the presentations to a rousing close. He observed that any politics of the democratic left needs to confront racism. There is no way we can finesse the issue by simply organizing around universal programs; we need to build a new politics of social solidarity. He concluded by pointing out that all of the proposals given tonight, even the most modest, will be red-baited. We must grow up and be forthright about how social democracy / democratic socialism has made the life of working people better the world over.

Which is exactly our point.

While Jim Crow and all that went with segregation of African-Americans is a bloody stain on our national history, comparing it to the genocidal Holocaust of the Nazis shows incredible disrespect to the United States and a complete lack of historical understanding and context.

The apparent focus of the discussion was the balance between the how far the Supreme Court would intervene and the content of the court痴 decisions.

The conversation started out with The Court before the 14th Amendment and worked forward. Picking up with World War II�

One of the things that should be pointed out is that first the NAACP mounts systematic thoughtful strategy to lay bare the contradictions that are embodied in the doctrines and ideological structures that the court is working with.

The second thing is that just to take a realistic perspective is that there is a lot of change going on outside of the court that you know the judges, you know have to take judicial notice of.

I mean you have got WWII you have got the doctrines of Nazism that we are fighting against that start to look uncomfortably similar to what is going on back here at home. You have got African-Americans that are returning home from the war with certain expectations謡hy is it that I am not in uniform and yet am denied more freedom here that I was in France or Italy?

And so you have a whole host of social conditions that are, you know, the court inevitably is influenced by and I think it is important for us to realize that although Brown may be one of those rare circumstances where the court is willing to get slightly beyond conventional opinion and sort of stake a place beyond the sort of political mainstream.

Helfrich asked about conventional social opinion.

Obama:

Social opinion. But that痴 very rare and even in the case of Brown I think that there were a lot of social changes attitudinal changes of the sort that Dennis [Hutchinson] was talking about in terms of the difference between social equality and political equality. A lot of that baggage has to be eliminated before you see the Supreme Court, before you see the Supreme Court venture out the way it did.

The context doesn稚 mitigate the offensive comparison that Obama made. It is even more difficult to reconcile as Obama has made such a deal during the campaign of conversations he had with his grandfather who served in World War II and was among the concentration camp liberators. Again, to contemporaneously compare the history of African-Americans in the U.S. to the Nazi Germany is so outrageous as to be offensive.

But, consider that January 2001 was just five years after Minister Louis Farrakhan痴 Million Man March that Barack Obama and Reverend Wright helped organize. Just the previous year, Nation of Islam leader Minister Farrakhan was reported in the  saying 鍍hat although the Holocaust was wrong, blacks had suffered �100 times worse� than the Jews.� For Minister Farrakhan, this was the American Holocaust of African Enslavement. In this context, it is not surprising that Barack Obama who worked with Minister Farrakhan and shared mutual friends, himself chose to make the comparison of Nazi Germany to the United States.

My point here is not to debate whether Jim Crow and segregation is comparable with the Nazi痴 and the Holocaust. Both were bad, both should never be forgotten. But contemporaneously comparable they are not. More than 11,000,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis between 1933 and 1945.

--THE LEFT got key LEGISLATION passed -- by first publicizing and exploiting key issues that could later be exploited for other unintended nefarious purposes. EQUALITY (voting rights/ACORN, Housing/CRA, Affirmative Action (see writer: Shelby Steele' White Guilt) that could later be exploited as a stepping stone for other purposes, ECOLOGY: by  (Global Warming), HEALTH CARE (a right, not a responsibility), etc.

Meanwhile, THE CENTER and THE RIGHT slept peacefully in their beds at night, thinking all was well, as long as business flourished, Wall Street was happy,  and the economy continued to grow. 

Economic booms masked what was going on under the radar, but THE LEFT never took their eye off the prize.

So the stage was set...all that remained was to find a charismatic individual or two who could be used to win another election and finish off what had taken years to set in place....

Alright here's some truth. Being a past lottery winner I can tell you that it's not up to people like Jones-Kelley to investigate people in the news when they "come into the spotlight".

First of all, when you do win the lottery that stuff is in the system. So you go pick up your money and the first thing that is done at lottery headquarters is a check to see if you owe taxes, school loans, child support, etc...This is paid immeadiately before you ever collect anything. Note that the bitch never said what she does if she finds that someone owes. That's because it's not her job to police this shit and she couldn't do anything about it anyway.
