Man admits making Molotov cocktails for convention

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Federal officials in Minneapolis say a man suspected of planning to attack the Republican National Convention has pleaded guilty to possessing Molotov cocktails.

The U.S. attorney's office in Minneapolis says 23-year-old Matthew Bradley DePalma of Flint, Mich., entered his plea Tuesday to a charge of possession of destructive devices.

Authorities say DePalma had made at least five Molotov cocktails by the time he was arrested on Aug. 28.

He had allegedly told an FBI informant he planned to attack the convention site in St. Paul and had described a plan to use the fire bombs on police.

DePalma has not yet been sentenced. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.

DePalma spent about 90 minutes at the Hennepin County Library on Aug. 18 researching recipes for homemade bombs. He bought the supplies for Molotov cocktails a few days later.

He said that if he could bomb the Xcel Center on Sept. 1, "they might call off the convention."

He added that a "power outage would say a lot" and that it was his "main purpose." DePalma also said that he would like to bomb the Xcel Energy Center on Sept. 4 so that the convention would "end with a bang."

On Aug. 22, DePalma allegedly made two jugs of a homemade napalm-like substance for use in the Molotov cocktails. He was seen traveling to a remote location in Rosemount to allegedly assemble and test the Molotov cocktails.

DePalma faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Sentencing has yet to be scheduled.

In an unrelated case, two Texas men have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly making Molotov cocktails during the convention. The Texans are accused of planning to use the bombs on police cars parked in a lot not far from the Xcel Center. David McKay and Bradley Crowder were part of a group of convention protesters that came north to St. Paul from Austin, Texas. Police found the bombs in a common area of an apartment building that the men were seen entering and leaving.

They allegedly bought the supplies for their bombs at a St. Paul Wal-Mart.

There may have been a search warrant involved where law enforcement must show probable cause. After the warrant is served, it is unsealed and they file a report of what was seized.

ATF does some good for once.  Still, while I'm glad they're off the streets,  "ATF disrupts skinhead plot to assassinate Obama" isn't a very nuanced way to describe two losers who thought they were going to successfully rob a gun store en route to a high school massacre and somehow penetrate secret service coverage to bag a presidential nominee along the way.

I will be curious about the type of surveillance.  ATF has a record of using informers as provocateurs in stings.  Which I'm conflicted about in principle (not necessarily in this case, though):  on the one hand, its darwinism in action and you certainly don't want someone that suggestible wandering around loose.  On the other hand, some of the cases they've built have seemed like the guilty party could have gone their whole life without ever being talked into anything by anyone but an ATF informer.  In one of the lesser-known militia cases in the late nineties that sent several people to prison, it turned out that the three movers and shakers in the group were each informants from different agencies; the guys on the fringe who went to jail mostly sat on their asses before getting nailed on technical gun or explosive violations, and might never have done more than bitch about Clinton.
