Press Coverage is Twice as Negative for McCain

Nothing new or unexpected here, but now we've got a nice graph. The Project for Excellence in Journalism (sic) has the statistics:

For Obama during this period, just over a third of the stories were clearly positive in tone (36%), while a similar number (35%) were neutral or mixed. A smaller number (29%) were negative.

For McCain, by comparison, nearly six in ten of the stories studied were decidedly negative in nature (57%), while fewer than two in ten (14%) were positive.

McCain did succeed in erasing one advantage Obama enjoyed earlier in the campaign—the level of media exposure each candidate received. Since the end of August, the two rivals have been in a virtual dead heat in the amount of attention paid, and when vice presidential candidates are added to the mix the Republican ticket has the edge. This is a striking contrast to the pre-convention period, when Obama enjoyed nearly 50% more coverage.

It isn't any consolation that McCain managed to get as much coverage as Obama when twice as much of that coverage was negative. To be fair, covering Obama has probably gotten more difficult since he's gone without talking to the press for so long.

I got this via the Anchoress who says, "slap my ass and call me Sally." Oh, yeah. You fit right in here, Sally.

1 The interview, first reported by the Drudge Report, was with a Chicago radio station while he was an Illinois state senator on Sept. 6, 2001.

Obama is talking about the victories of the civil rights movement, and says, "You know if you look at the victories and the failures of the Civil Rights movement and its litigation strategy in the Court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples so that I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order as long as I could pay for it I would be okay. But the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.... And one of the I think the tragedies of the Civil Rights movement was because the Civil Rights movement became so court focused I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change and in some ways we still suffer from that."

The entire context of the interview isn't clear, and the sentiment isn't all that different from Martin Luther King Jr., who after the voting rights and other accomplishments of the 1960s civil rights movement moved toward greater emphasis on poverty and economic justice.

But McCain's campaign is jumping on it as part of the assault on Obama's remark to the famous Joe the plumber in Ohio that with America so economically troubled, it might be good to spread the wealth.

"The American people continue to learn more about Barack Obama. Now we know that the slogans 'change you can believe in' and 'change we need' are code words for Barack Obama's ultimate goal: 'redistributive change.' In a previously uncovered interview from September 6, 2001, Barack Obama expressed his regret that the Supreme Court hadn't been more 'radical' and described as a 'tragedy' the Court's refusal to take up 'the issues of redistribution of wealth.' No wonder he wants to appoint judges that legislate from the bench – as insurance in case a unified Democratic government under his control fails to meet his basic goal: taking money away from people who work for it and giving it to people who Barack Obama believes deserve it. Europeans call it socialism, Americans call it welfare, and Barack Obama calls it change," McCain senior policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin said in a statement.

2 Only twice as much? I think that is way too conservative of an estimate. I haven't seen one positive McCain story on Yahoo's headlines or google's headlines and I browse them daily and then some. I have yet to see a negative story on Obama. I'm sure they exist in print and in major newspapers, but I with my bit-more-than-causal perusal of the media's news outlets have yet to see one...so how will the average guy see a negative on Obama?

4 I'd like to see more than three weights.

Because I'm seeing articles blasting McCain, and articles with mild criticism of a specific detail of an Obama plan.

Those might well be 'negative' articles. Even though they're tough to equate.

5 I'd like to see how they defined "neutral" articles about Obama as well...

6 I wonder if they factor in all that sweet, crazy-ass anti-Palin bias. Like one Sunday a couple of weeks ago, when newsbusters counted five anti-Palin hit pieces in the front section of the NY Times. Seems to me that would really skew the results.

That's some right salty language for The Anchoress.

The neutral seems b.s. to me too.

I bet "neutral" means airing unedited footage of a speech or appearance without a major voiceover or post-clip analysis.

To me not pointing out anything wrong that Obama or Biden has said in a speech or in the debates is the same as positive coverage.

And I bet the snide asides if not outright but brief criticism of McCain or Palin after airing a video clip of them happens alot more than just a neutral, "Said Senator McCain speaking today in Dallas," even if there isn't a full-blown critical analysis following the video clip.

9 It feels like someone has brain washed our media. It looks to me like Obama can do no wrong. I am afraid of a blinded nation, no matter what or who his character reveals about his past people are hypnotized and hooked.
