| Man Bites Dog: Hyper-Partisan Lefty Paper Endorses... Norm Coleman!? [someone]The Strib did what? Seriously!? I guess being an unfunny schlubby bespectacled avatar of hate has its drawbacks. Sorry, Al.Comments1
And we always called the Strib The Red Star. Lileks is the only good thing they've had. Wow, Smalley is really goin' down.

Does anyone have a link to that SNL skit on Murtha from tonight?
Posted by: Christoph at October 26, 2008 12:43 AM (hawOV) 3
This is crazy. You're talking about a paper that has been in hock to the DFL (Democrat-Farmer-Labor, Dumb Fucking Leftists, take your choice) since it was created, and it's endorsing a Republican?

This is a sure sign of the End of Days...

I think its more of a sign that they don't want to endorse an candidate who is going to lose badly.

Well, remember, the lefties have been telling us for weeks that Coleman is gonna lose, and lose big.
I don't think so. This may be an attempt to cut the tie to help Barry in a state he's in real danger of losing himself. Posted by: someone at October 26, 2008 12:54 AM (7KUMK) Posted by: Daryl Herbert at October 26, 2008 12:55 AM (YvLui) 9

I was reading through the comments as well. And I think that the number 1 thing that I have learned form this election is that it is true what they say about projection.
The louder you complain, the guiltier you are. K Posted by: Kestrel♠ at October 26, 2008 01:06 AM (/HZnk) 14
They mitigated it somewhat by using the most ugly-ass picture of Norm Coleman ever taken.

Yeah, there's even tinfoily types in there pushing Paul Wellstone assassination theories. I do love the palpable lefty outrage, though. The Strib's reason for endorsing him seems to be that he's effective at bringing home the pork. I'm hoping Minnesota conservatives can do something about that after he's re-elected. I have the same problem with John Thune, he's up for re-election next time. Posted by: Jim62sch at October 26, 2008 01:11 AM (ubHgw) 17

Oh, God, yes. Those are hilarious. I'm not from Minnesota, but (like many, no doubt) I've been following this one because of Al Hasn't-Been-Funny-For-30-Years Franken. No matter what else happens, if Franken and Murtha are defeated it won't be all bad.

Everyone seems amazed that this paper is endorsing a Republican. Read this quote from the article:
The more independent, pragmatic Coleman emerged when he helped speed money to Minneapolis for a new Interstate 35W bridge; when he promoted tax credits for renewable energy investment; when he pushed for larger Pell Grants for needy college students; when he stood up to President Bush on extending publicly subsidized health insurance, including MinnesotaCare, to more poor children and their parents
Does that sound like a Republican? Just because someone has a fucking (R) after their name it doesn’t mean they are a Republican. Posted by: Vic at October 26, 2008 08:33 AM (b1ysY) 56
Those comments are quite amusing ... especially the ones who are claiming the EVILLLL!!!11!!1 Karl Rove is behind the endorsement. Who knew he had such far-reaching powers?
Posted by: Fernandozer at October 26, 2008 09:08 AM (wzNME) 57
Some thoughts on the StarTribune endorsement:
- There were rumors recently that the Democratic leadership in DC does not want Al Franken in the Senate, so I'm not sure they are really going against their party wishes. - It is also rumored that they are on the verge of bankruptcy, so maybe they think they can get back some of those people they have offended over years. If this is the case, I hope it backfires and the liberals start canceling their subscriptions in protest of the Coleman endorsement. That would make bankruptcy a real possibility. Posted by: mark at October 26, 2008 09:17 AM (j8plk) 58

I just canceled the Houston Chronicle after their endorsement of Obama and other lefties across the state. It was always an amateurish fish wrap anyway (owned by the same group that gives us the San Francisco Comical), and I only kept up my scrip for the sports section, which the WSJ does not have.
I'll still buy at the news stand a couple of times a week for the sports, but those numbers don't count in the circulation figures on which their ad rates are based. Get 'em where it hurts. Posted by: Constant Reader at October 26, 2008 11:03 AM (8lOjg) 66

Good to hear. I was reluctant to pull the plug after many years of home delivery, but the Chronicle has become nearly unreadable lately. Like many other MSM sources, sometime early in this election cycle they decided to drop even the pretense of objectivity and cheerlead The Golden One. I just won't take that crap from a product I'm paying for. Posted by: Constant Reader at October 26, 2008 11:42 AM (8lOjg) 68
Constant Reader It was with much reluctance, but nontheless a good decision. The newspapers have a self-worth that is not grounded in reality when placed in the context of dwindling circulation numbers. The junk status of the NYT was welcome news to those of us who despise the MSM. I do not even watch the local news anymore, excepting significant weather developments. Posted by: oldfart at October 26, 2008 11:49 AM (zY6zl) 69

This seems to be the Strib's attempt to appear balanced by endorsing the token GOPer. Franken is such a loathsome candidate they figure they can get away with it. Have seen here and elsewhere that almost all of the Strib polls showing O with a big lead would, once realistic Dem/GOP percentages are used, actually show McCain winning MN. That would be great - a McCain/Palin stop in MN might validate that theory. Posted by: aww at October 26, 2008 12:41 PM (JcoKu) 71
"I only kept up my scrip for the sports section"
If it wasn't for the local sports coverage, I think we would see a lot of these newspapers go bankrupt. I keep hoping someone can come up with an alternative way of delivering local sports coverage, so more people will drop their subscriptions to these rags. Like a lot of the narrative lines in the works of fiction posted at AOSHQ, this one kind of works so long as the reader doesn't know of the existence of, or have a license for, or doesn't know how to engage a search engine on an information assembly data base, such as the one at wikipedia.
Knight-Ridder acquired the Star-Trib from McClatchey Newspapers in 2007, and installed one of the Ridder retards as publisher. In the space of a few months, Pat Ridder has managed to reveal himself a thief and a liar, and accordingly a natural alley of the Republican Party. Among other things, in the context of a lawsuit that's still pending full resolution at trial he's been made the subject of a court order keeping him away from the business - which I suppose really is MBD news, I grant you. It's difficult for a lot of folks to watch the decline of the big city newspaper, but fortunately it comes with a silver lining: the vital responsibility that journalism brings to the American democratic experiment is being left behind by the big city American newspaper and handed over to the Web. But it is nice to see AOSHQ uphold the Knight-Ridder tradition of deception and relying on the ignorance of its readership. Wear it well, lads - wear it well. Yep, mark. Local news (including sports) and the store sale ads are the only things keeping them alive.
You can get most of the store flyers online now (certainly for the big chains), and local news is the first thing the doofuses tend to cut. "But we won't look like a serious paper without those AP stories!" "Big deal. Do you want to look 'serious' or do you want to have a job? You're the friggin' South Ballsack Register, not the Washington Post. If you concentrated on South Ballsack you'd be fine." Canceled my local paper two years ago -- haven't missed it a bit.

Meanwhile, the Anchorage Daily News, alaska's largest newspaper, has endorsed ....Obama. Oh, they "praise" Palin : “Many Alaskans are proud to see their governor, and their state, so prominent on the national stage,” reads the endorsement. But “Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office.” Didja notice how "the office" Barack brings more promise to is the POTUS, whereas Palin is running for VPOTUS? Here's a hint, dumbass. When you're the only guy in the room contending that the MSM is a right-leaning outfit (as opposed to a reliably, relentlessly left-leaning one, as is the expressed view of the vast majority of news consumers and even left-infested institutions like Hollywood and the media itself), it's time to get yourself fitted for a sandwich board, because you're batshit crazy. To V-Jay @ 79 -
If all I was looking for from blog surfing was affirmation and confirmation, I sure wouldn't come to AOSHQ. I think the reason you, and Ace [or so he claims] and his Hole Cards, and of course the Tool bag in general, claim the MSM leans left, is because there are many, many MSM organs, and at any one time, out of competition if no other motivator, a few, sometimes even just one, will disagree with the AOSHQ [winger] POV - and thus stand out like a sore thumb. The fact that so many in the MSM are doing it this year is only partly in recognition that it may be necessary to do so in order to attract and keep some portion of the 18 to 35 year old market, being those coming into the market-driven economy, and with the credit crunch, the only ones actually forced to make larger ticket non-discretionary purchases. The rest of it has to do with what the GOP selecting McCain meant for this campaign. All McCain has ever had is his POW identity and his "maverick brand". The former is between 7 & 4 years late for this stage in Pax Americana, and the later is anathema for a nation driven to joint sacrifice in order to obtain a workable degree of restoration to survive as such. I'm going to grant some, even quite a bit of credence to the notion that the timing of the credit crunch has a lot to do with the huge national gap between Obama and McCain, and the fact that the question is now not so much if or how but how much Obama is about to win by. The reason I'm prepared to grant the possibility of "quite a bit" is that the credit crunch didn't just point up McCain's weaknesses, it induced him into showing the degree of erraticism inherent in his maverickyness, and it being high-lighted meant there has been no light at all shone on the conservative argument for foreign policy in pursuit of national security, still even now the one area where McCain has a tactical advantage over Obama [I leave aside entirely whether or not I agree with that argument. The fact is more Americans have confidence in the McCain expression of that argument than the Obama expression - which has a lot to do with Obama going into Clintonian triangulation to offset it.] The GOP going with McCain also ill-served the many advantages posed in the Palin pick. Indeed, I would argue that there are at least two other top of the ticket candidates who would have been served well by picking Palin, and that the ONLY top of the ticket pick for whom she would end up posing a problem was McCain. It's the age and infirmity problem - and the contrast with Palin's busting out with healthfulness: it makes McCain look all the older and more infirm, and that scares folks with someone still in the throes of being introduced to the nation. Indeed, the ultimate irony is that McCain picking Palin killed off two of his middling strong arguments: experience and familiarity. How in hell does one run an Ayers-Wright campaign when the impression is there's still so much more to learn about Palin? Moreover, as to McCain, and baggage: How in hell does McCain run an attack on Acorn when there's video not 3 years old of his impassioned embrace of its goals? I'm not saying here "Shoulda gone with Romney", but assuming the GOP had picked Romney, all that - ALL the stuff about the Maverick that is retarding the larger GOP argument - would be off the table, and indeed the image of Romney being a financial wiz would be a distinct advantage. Credit where credit is due: As I have said here...INNUMERABLE times...Ace early on in the GOP primary listed, gathered up, analyzed and cataloged all the objections to and risks inherent in the GOP going with McCain. Go back and check those: almost all have come true. That the MSM came to the point of seeing them as well sure doesn't make an argument that Ace is a closet commie. Posted by: diderot's dog at October 26, 2008 03:07 PM (nrD02) 82
