NYT: Cuban Intel Agency Aided the Weathermen; DGI Intended to Recruit Prospects to Work in US Government

According to this article in the Times from October of 1977, reporting on a leaked FBI report.

-Three years before militant members of the students for a Democratic Society split off to form the Weather Underground Organization in 1970, North Vietnamese and Cuban officials were influencing radical antiwar strategy through foreign meetings. Many of these meetings were held in Communist countries, including Hungary, Czechoslovakia and North Vietnam.
-The conduit for contact in the United States was a group of intelligence agents assigned to the staff of the Cuban Mission to the United Nations in New York. These agents arranged for American youths to be inculcated with revolutionary fervor and, occasionally, to be trained in practical weaponry by Cuban military officers through the so-called Venceremos Brigades.
-After the Weathermen went "underground" in 1970 and many of them were being sought by the F.B.I. on criminal charges, Cuban intelligence officers were in touch with them from both the New York mission and the Cuban Embassy in Canada.
-Cuban officials helped several Weather Underground adherents who feared arrest in the United States to travel to Prague, Czechoslovakia, and then to reenter the United Slates surreptitiously.
The report linked the growing militancy of certain members of the Students for a Democratic Society, which resulted in the so-called Days of Rage in Chicago in 1969; to North Vietnamese advice the year before to choose youngsters who would battle with the police.
The North Vietnamese, according to S.D.S. literature of the time, had suggested that the antiwar movement needed not just intellectual protesters but also physically rugged recruits.

So, which WeatherUndergrounders did they help?

In another incident, the report said, four Weathermen who had been in Cuba with the Venceremos Brigades were sent back to the United States through Czechoslovakia rather than through Canada with other brigade members to lessen their chances of being arrested by the United States authorities. The four wanted to get back to the United States safely after the explosion of a house in Greenwich Village killed two members of the Weather group, Dianna Oughton and Ted Gold, and the Cubans "obliged" them by making the European travel arrangements, the report said.

Informant Larry Grathwohl, yeah, that informant, said he'd been given instructions from Bill Ayers on the code system for contact set up by the DGI.

"In February 1970, leading WUO member Bill Ayers told fellow underground WUO member Larry Grathwohl that if communication could not be made through these Canadian numbers, an individual should get in touch with the Cuban Embassy in Canada in order to establish contact with other members of the WUO," the report said.
"To do this an individual should use the code name 'Delgado' when referring to himself and the person with whom he desired to make contact," it said.

Was Ayers one of the 4 they brought back through Prague? I don't know, but I'd sure as hell like someone in the media to ask him.

If they actually gave a shit about Ayers, which of course, they don't.

20 Having been an intel nugget in my prior stints in the Green Machine, I always felt the DGI, the Cuban version of the KGB, would have aided ALL the Undergrounders they could get in touch with. ALL OF THEM.
The DGI, like most any eastern bloc styled Intel Ops Agency, would have sent out as many trained rats as it could reliably send.
If Ayers got there first, he might indeed have had that level of training but the fact remains: such agencies are seldom that picky in their recruiting at times of large turmoil as there was at the end of the 60s and early 70s. These are the times where an agency spreads a wide net and tries foe wide spread recruitment, as many will fall along the way, many will be caught or fall out of love with the movement, and many will choose family over ideology.
Judging from their comfortably bourgeois lifestyles these days, the Ayers and Dorhn brand of activism is down to encouraging others to carry the fire while you stay home and buy CHe Guevara merchandize on QVC...

Exactamundo. Dan Cantor of the New Party and WFP proposed higher taxes on any New Yorker making over $250,000. It's so darned similar to Barry's plan that one can't help but wonder if he's not one of Barry's advisors. Cantor also proposed a progressive property tax, an idea which would undoubtedly gain traction in an Obama/Pelosi/Reid administration. They can't force communities to set that system up, but they can make it as popular as global warming "science" and pressure communities to adopt it in the interest of social justice.

The NYT article refers to the same report (1976, 400+ pages) the FBI has on their website -- only theirs is heavily redacted, especially when it comes to "Foreign Travel and/or Contacts" the report lists under the names of each WUO member. Link

There's some info still in the report about the initial meeting between the Vietnamese and leading anti-war activists in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, in November 1967, and travels to Cuba in 1969 and 1970, but nothing I can see about trips from Cuba to Prague, Czechoslovakia after '70. In fact, there's almost nothing about the WUO travels after 1970, so I assume that's what's blacked out, which is curious.

I'm not getting what the NYT's angle is in this story -- the report says that Fidel, Che and Regis Dubray were the strongest influence on the WUO -- but the NYT seems to be saying "Look, even though they traveled to Cuba, and had frequent contact with Cuban agents, they weren't secret agents of a foreign power since they didn't have any connections to "Communist bloc nations," so hey, the FBI is lying. Cuba wasn't a "foreign power?" It wasn't part of the international communist movement in the bizarro world of the NYT? The Cuban missile crisis never happened?

Bill Ayers, brother, Rick (Richard James Ayers), also in the WUO, spent several years in Canada draft-dodging, though, and Cathy Wilkerson, who survived the townhouse blast, was a well-traveled terrorist beeyotch, including trips to Hanoi, Paris and Cambodia, as well as Cuba.

Dohrn and Oughton, Bill's GF's, made frequent trips to Cuba (through Canada) pre-1970, but Ayers is never mentioned as traveling there, or anywhere else. Oughton also spent a year studying in Russia, and also spent some time in Guatamala.

There's more in the FBI report, but it's a really bad, unsearchable copy in six parts, and tough on the eyeballs.

It said the ultimate objective of the D.G.I's participation in setting up the Venceremos Brigades "is the recruitment of individuals who are politically oriented and who someday may obtain a position, elective or appointive, somewhere in the U.S. Government, which would provide the Cuban Government with access to political, economic and military intelligence."

The report said this conclusion was based on information from former officials of the D.G.I.

The Cuban intelligence officers were described as particularly eager to recruit Americans who had political contacts or who were related to United States government officials.

Isn't that what they are doing right now?
