Krauthammer...I'm For McCain

The good doctor names names and makes the case for McCain.

I stand athwart the rush of conservative ship-jumpers of every stripe -- neo (Ken Adelman), moderate (Colin Powell), genetic/ironic (Christopher Buckley) and socialist/atheist (Christopher Hitchens) -- yelling "Stop!" I shall have no part of this motley crew. I will go down with the McCain ship. I'd rather lose an election than lose my bearings.

...Who do you want answering that phone at 3 a.m.? A man who's been cramming on these issues for the past year, who's never had to make an executive decision affecting so much as a city, let alone the world? A foreign policy novice instinctively inclined to the flabbiest, most vaporous multilateralism (e.g., the Berlin Wall came down because of "a world that stands as one"), and who refers to the most deliberate act of war since Pearl Harbor as "the tragedy of 9/11," a term more appropriate for a bus accident?

Or do you want a man who is the most prepared, most knowledgeable, most serious foreign policy thinker in the United States Senate? A man who not only has the best instincts but has the honor and the courage to, yes, put country first, as when he carried the lonely fight for the surge that turned Iraq from catastrophic defeat into achievable strategic victory?

He also takes a hatchet to the bogus charges laid against McCain this campaign about negative campaigning and temperament.

Not that anyone cares but while I dislike McCain enough to have been willing to vote for Hillary none of that translates into praise for Obama (as it has for a few notable 'conservatives'). Obama is flat out dangerous. Since I live in a blue state that will go for Obama by at least 20% my vote doesn't matter much but if enough conservatives in states like mine do the same and McCain can pull this out, maybe we can prevent Obama from getting the popular vote.

Im glad to see Krauthammer, despite reservations, is standing his ground (alright, I know hes wheelchair bound, but its a metaphor).

Clearly hes not looking for Tim Robbins to polish his knob.

Always liked him.

5 The 'Hammer didn't like the choice of Sarah Palin and didn't agree with certain other McCain moves - doesn't mean he is going to go for Obama.  Krauthammer is a serious guy - sometimes too serious - he's not going to vote for the socialist radical because McCain hurt his feelings - that's for women and men who want to be women.  As to Hitchens - the guy is a Marxist for god's sake!  Sure he's an interesting guy and with us (mostly) in the war on terror, but did anyone really think he wouldn't go for the O ?  Even Noonan, for all her anti-Palinism hasn't endorsed Obama or anything.

I, too live in a blue state and my vote won't affect the election.

But you can still give $$$, you can work a phone bank calling voters in swing states, if you're a lawyer you can make yourself available to help stop the vote fraud we all know is coming---all of which is valuable.

Posted by: Marty at October 24, 2008 11:51 AM (xWFCX)

7

Well what the heck; I don't think either McCain or Obama has a friggin' clue about what to about the economy---so a vote for either one of them is a vote for clueless at the economic helm.  American business and the American worker will just have to muddle through, although I think they'll muddle through better without the government's big fat butcher's thumb on the scales.  So if one has to choose among the clueless, that's a vote for Clueless John McCain.

On the question of security and foreign policy; well Obama selected Slow Joe Biden as the "foreign policy expert" on his ticket to make up for his lack of experience;  and Slow Joe has been putting both feet in his foreign policy mouth throughout the campaign.

So I go with Krauthammer. McCain gets my vote--although since I live in California I have no illusion that vote will effect the result in California.

I LOVED this article. Krauthammer is a good guy and a true conservative. He aggravates me at times. But not in the wishy-washy way. I appreciated the stands he took on many issues in this piece. It makes up for the times he aggravated me after debates!

Posted by: freetofly at October 24, 2008 12:01 PM (hoaRD)

10 Actually, judging by the tone of his article, the headline should be "Krauthammer... I'm for McCain, Stupid".  Because it takes a real idiot to overlook the obvious point he's making.

Posted by: someone at October 24, 2008 12:01 PM (zHoxL)

11 One thing about Kraut is I don't think he cares what anyone thinks. He pisses me off sometime but always seems to have a rational argument.

I tivo'ed H&C last nigh and wow Sarah and Mrs. Fred! I don't want to agree with Kathleen Parker but I was having a hard time just being rational. Spectacular warmth and beauty from Palin.

On the other hand Mrs. Barrack is on fox now.

Posted by: TMQ at October 24, 2008 12:06 PM (aMu45)

14 Just because Krauthammer has been wrong-headed on Palin doesn't mean that he's a complete idiot and unable to look at the big picture; specifically what an absolute disaster Obastard would be as a President.  In fact the inordinate amount of attention that's been paid to Palin's qualifications, as to be contrasted to the same set of standards being applied to the jug-eared dumbfuck heading the other ticket, has to have set a new standard in missing-the-picture.

I too live in a blue state, so what? Our household mailed in two votes for McCain/Palin today.

I tell my kids to keep playing [soccer] to win right up until the whistle blows - even if they're way behind. Games turn in the last few minutes when everyone is tired, or thinks it's in the bag.

I don't care if your in the bluest of the blues -  offer to drive your parents or aging neighbors to the polls.

Posted by: Blacksheep at October 24, 2008 12:14 PM (EQYOq)

18 Remember, one reason the 'Hammer doesn't like Palin is he thinks that it weakens McCain's "Obama is too inexperienced" argument.  He's right that it does, a bit, but that tune has pretty much been played out - McCain wasn't going to get much more mileage from it anyway.  Why compare Pain to Obama - because McCain is old - it's BS, but just plausible enough that it works.

Posted by: Holdfast at October 24, 2008 12:14 PM (Gzb30)

19 I live in a blue state, but a swing district.  I'm encouraging everyone I know to cast a ballot for McCain, so we can give him our electoral vote. I've already encouraged at least one or two independents - with a little work, I'm hoping we're a nice little spot of red in the northeast.

If nothing else, denying the Midway Miracle the popular vote is some consolation. If they get the Senate, the White House, and a convincing popular vote count, the crap we hear about "mandate" and, in the socialist jargon, "the people's voice," will be intolerable. Revisiting the talk about the electoral college will again pop up, etc....

21 For you "blue state" types who are so sure your vote will amount to nothing.

Also, there are more than just McCain/Palin to vote for.
Do your damnedest to reduce the number of Senators and Representatives on Obama's side if he gets in.

Vote anyway, just to spite the bastards.  Let them be the ones to assume it's all over.

VOTE (in case I didn't make myself clear :-)

Posted by: Paul Gordon at October 24, 2008 12:18 PM (EtBsE)

22 Don't mail in your votes, people.  Look at the way they've discarded over 200 military ballots in VA over a ridiculous technicality.  Think they won't do the same to your mail-in ballot?  At least on election day, at a voting machine, they can't impose some ridiculous rule without your being there to contest it or satisfy the technicality they'll use to disenfranchise you.

Also, if you're in a blue state and "your vote won't count", you better get out there and vote anyway.  Make the bastards work for it.

54 Obama will win some states.  He won't win any of them by 20 points.  Not one.  Neither side will.  When it's all said and done almost every state will be in the single digits one way or the other.  There aren't a lot of lost causes out there.  Stop pretending there are.  If Obama wins it will be very close.  If McCain wins it probably won't be very close at all, and McCain will win a couple of states every one figured he would lose.  Stop complaining and work.

Michigan is winnable. PA is winnable. Wisconsin is winnable. Minnesota is winnable.

I think there may be another blue state or 2 that is winnable. McCain is going to shock the nation.
Keep you mind on the matter at hand. We will win.

Nothing is inevitable. Senator Government can hold the biggest party he wants. He will still lose. Do not be swayed or discouraged by polls and pundits.

As a Hillary supporter, if we let polls and pundits decide. We would never have won the last primary's in Ohio,Texas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and South Dakota.

We decide. America on the 4th will reject socialism. All of the naysayers will be wrong again.

This is what McCain/Palin have done their whole career's. Get counted out and then prove them all wrong.
Lets go win this election.

82 "simply questioning why a conservative would support Mrs. Clinton over John McLane err McCain"

Because before he ensured the future of the conservative movement, McCain was pretty obviously a sign of squishier things to come.  Defeating him would have forced Dems to be responsible (well, the responsible ones, not the Barry wing) while discouraging party folks from foisting another moderate on us.

Sarah Palin changed everything.

83 Just think of how sweet it will be to knock that halo off and see that one conceding the election right in the middle of his damn Grant Park coronation.

From your keyboard to God's screen.

86 In re the syndicated "fifth" columnists who are reported to be Conservatives: Mr. Obama's candidacy has demonstrated that one does not stand athwart history yelling "stop" when one is a mercenary.

I believe one big problem is the system of syndication. Syndicators have selected their poodles, slapped labels upon them, and voila created syndicated commentators. The difficulty is that these common taters are branded as Conservative or Liberal based upon the opinions of the syndicators.

This does not just destroy the credibility of the common tater, but of the magazines (e.g. National Review) and their syndicators.

87 #71 ``I live in the darkest blue of blue; the belly of the beast, right by the NYU campus with my professor girlfriend...''

I see your NYU and raise you Chicago.

I voted early yesterday - I'm serving as a judge of election for the first time this year and the the first thing they told us at the training session was to vote early because (1) there's no guarantee you'll be posted to your home precinct and (2) they expect to be a LOT busier than in previous years and you might not get a break to go do your own voting.

Even if McCain doesn't carry Illinois (he probably won't, but who knows? - there are a whole lot of Downstaters who are going to vote too) - at least it will add to his total vote count, and with any luck we can get rid of Rahm Emanuel and Dick Durbin at the same time.

88 We can agree to disagree with PUMAs after 11-4-08. For now, welcome 'em. They're with us on the most fundamental need in this election: to prevent Barack Insane Obama from turning over the Lincoln Bedroom to William Ayers and Bernardine Whore-n.

89 #86, apologies if I cast any aspersions in Mr. Krauthammer's direction. I am not annoyed with him for endorsing Mr. McCain. To the contrary, Thank You, Mr. Krauthammer.

90 Anyone see fox news reporting from early voting in FL?

Wait time is over 4 hours!

Not sure what county they were reporting from, but the wait line seemed, uhh, um, um, very diverse.

Make of that what you will.

DrewM-

I also live in a blue state.  I voted for McCain anyway.  Even if my state electorals go for The Blue Team.

--->*IF* McCain wins the election, I want to add to his "popular vote".

Hey Obama, don't count your votes before they're cast!

Posted by: Carey at October 24, 2008 02:41 PM (kVJVu)

92 Well what the heck; I don't think either McCain or Obama has a friggin' clue about what to about the economy---so a vote for either one of them is a vote for clueless at the economic helm.

Well, at least McCain isn't going to raise my taxes, isn't going to put small businesses into a massive squeeze, and isn't so likely to want to go and raid my 401(k) plan.

Note to the Dem congress: go ahead, punks, make me go all medieval on your punk asses when you reach for my 401(k), you suckers of barbed cock.

Bless Krauthammer for not losing his logical thinking faculties.  It seems like he's one of the few member of the conservative "intelligentsia" that still has them.  He may be disappointed in the Palin pick but he knows that all choices involve a trade-off.  As such, he's made a rational cost-benefit analysis and found McCain-Palin is clearly the better ticket.

I particularly appreciate the fact that Krauthammer called out the "dirty campaigning" double standard that the media has been perpetrating. I'm stunned by how brazenly the MSM ignores every questionable thing Obama/Biden does while simultaneously over-hyping every questionable thing McCain/Palin does.  I guess I'm naive.  I keep hoping one of these "journalists" will snap out of his/her delusion and/or partisan desire to see Obama elected and start behaving like a journalist again  Yes, I know.  I know.  The MSM has always had a liberal bias.  But what I've witnessed this campaign year is unprecedented.  I've never seen a politician get as universally glowing coverage as Obama.  Nor have I ever seen the MSM give a politician more of a free pass than they have given Obama.  Moreover, I've never seen politicians vilified during the actual campaign year to the degree the MSM has vilified both Clintons, McCain and especially Palin. Sorry for whining.  I guess the point I want to make is the following: In the event that Obama pulls out the win, the Republicans are going to need to find a way to adjust to this new (more brazenly biased) MSM reality if they want to make him a one term President.  I don't think the McCain campaign was really prepared for the MSM's behavior.

97 "...Not that anyone cares but while I dislike McCain enough to have been willing to vote for Hillary..." Drew

Lol. I love how metrosexuals think. And Hillary would have been good for this country how, Drew? Take any liberal bent McCain may have and Hillary multiplies it by 10. Why, you're just like Kathy Parker. She uses "logic" similar to the way you do. There exists NO flow chart comparing McCain to either Barry or Hillary that spits out either of the liberals as the answer. Keep scribbling stuff down, Drew.

Posted by: JS at October 24, 2008 07:16 PM (8WXs+)

98 Uh, JS? McCain is a Socialist too, y'know. He pushes AGW and "greedy Wall Street" like there's no tomorrow. Not a dime's worth of difference between McCain and Hillary. He only looks good next to Obama.

Posted by: The Band at October 25, 2008 12:40 AM (QtRBc)

99 If McCain is able to gather at least the popular vote, if enough of us out here in blue states (Woo!) vote for him, we'll eventually be able to compound enough instances of popular vote failure that this electoral system might finally be destroyed. These illuminati want to see that the elections are constantly thrown in their favor, almost always because of their guaranteed California vote.  Let's see what happens when they don't have their little ace in the hole.

Posted by: RJ at October 25, 2008 12:41 AM (7nbTg)

100 Uh, The band? I seem to recall Hillary (you know, that shameless woman who rode to power on her rapist, impeached, husbands coattails), complaining that she only voted for the Iraq war because Bush lied. There are many differences between McCain and Hillary, but the most important one is character - she is one, while he has it.

McCain, who abhors earmarks and is for LOWER taxes is a socialist? Oookay then....
