A Fallen Soldier Returns Home

I can’t think of many things that can keep a plane full of travelers in their seats when a flight reaches the gate. Thankfully, respect and gratitude for a fallen soldier and his family is one of them.

I’d pull a quote but just read the whole thing.

No matter what happens in less than two weeks, it’s good to know that the decency of ordinary Americans, whether they be at work or simply passengers on a plane will be the same.

Even more comforting is the fact that truly great American’s like this fallen soldier, his Army escort and his family will still be among us.

I read that yesterday at Blackfive and the first thing I thought was that you know that there were Democrats and Republicans on that flight and all responded the same way.

I've got something in my eye too.

My nephew returned from his third tour in Iraq two months ago. He was going to volunteer for a fourth tour in Afghanistan starting in January 09 but I asked him to wait until after the election. He won't serve under obama and a lot of his buddies feel the same way. They still remember the "air-raiding villages and terrorizing civilians" lie told by that shitheel obama.

Its always allergy season in Dallas. Mine have been bad, but better today. The tears coming from my eyes aren't allergies, however.

Since that story was posted in July, by now the burial is over, the regrets have all be sent, the grass has begun to grow on the grave. And the reality that these fine Americans will never again see their son in this life has really begun to set in for them. I have four children, and the thought of dealing with the loss of any one of them is simply not in my capability to understand.

May God grant them the peace that passes all understanding, and may the knowledge, no matter what small comfort, that their soldier is a hero, and a great American, be forever with them. Americans, all of us, are or should be grateful for every man and woman who voluntarily defends our country.

God Bless our troops, and God bless America.

Like the rest of you, I'll dispense with the usual moron act, and confess to not just a few tears at this story.

I am a captain at a major national airline and was proud to provide whatever honors I could to two heros on their last flights home. For whatever attention the Code Pink harpies garner, there is a great swath of America who appreciates the service that these men and women (as well as their families) are giving us.

My experience was that my passengers also sat and allowed the hero's escort to leave the plane first. Many stayed in their seats until the casket was removed from the cargo hold. Many others stopped in the window to pay their respects there rather than continue on with their travels.

I'm betting that soldiers travelling in uniform don't pay for half the meals that they eat. When I'm at work, I keep a $10 bill in my pocket for the purpose of sneaking to the head of the line to pay for whatever airport foodcourt meal a soldier happens after. Our gate agents will routinely upgrade them into first class if seats are available, and when they aren't, it is not unusual at all for a paying first class passenger to switch seats with the soldier.

Most of the lefties will honor a soldiers death--I think they think of him as a victim. Most of the rest of us honor his life. We are saddened that he died, but know that he was willing to die for something greater than himself. The lefties don't get that at all.

Thanks for posting that.  Like many of us on this thread, it's too easy to get wrapped up in politics, work and life to the point that we don't pause to remember these great heroes putting their lives on the line for us every day.  God bless them and may his comfort be felt by this family.

35 Last year I flew home on mothers day into Houston. Upon arrival the Captain informed us that we had a fallen hero on our plane and that they were going stop short of the gate. As we approached the gate, I could see the Airport Fire department, EMS and police all waiting for us. After we had stopped, the Fire trucks on each side of us, put streams of water over the plane in honor of this brave soldier. I sat their in tears at the thought of a Mother receiving her son's remains on Mothers day. I will never forget that day, or the selfless sacrifices our brave Men and Women make on our behalf.
