A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said. Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m. Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.
Update: Context from a native. It's a high-crime area, but it's also highly trafficked.

Original post follows: No story yet -- not sure if it's legit. Republican hate. Catch the fever. A reader points out: "Get in their faces." I seem to remember the insistence that McCain and Palin were responsible for the words their "incitements" caused. Edited: Earlier notes of skepticism deleted for three reasons: 1, doubts are mostly gone now that I see the picture. 2, the police will do their jobs, and it's unfair to speculate about the victim of a crime. 3, if my quotoes remain, CNN will quote me when they say "Even conservatives smell a hoax..." CNN only quotes conservative blogs when they make points helpful to the liberal cause. I've been quoted there three times and it's always been to attack Republicans. They've never once found me quite so interesting when I'm, say, noting Barack Obama's unprecedented voter and donor fraud.

Unfortunately many of us with young children and wife at home really have to think about the wisdom of having McCain/Palin signs in our yards and cars. I have both, but for their safety I have been thinking about taking them down, my kids have already seen people walking by the house and spitting at the signs. At the same time you don't want to give in to these thugs. It's a tough call.

Not sure about the rest, though. If a "police spokeswoman" says it, they don't generally take things at face value, so I would think the scratching was at least verified.
As to the motivation, that's only the word of the witness. We hope that she told the police more details to at least make it plausible.

Police say the 20-year-old woman, who is from Texas, reported that the attack occurred yesterday in one of the city's eastern neighborhoods.

Police: McCain Worker Mugged, Attacked PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police are investigating after a local woman working at a campaign call center says she was attacked by a suspect who became enraged after seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car.
According to police, the 20-year-old woman said she was mugged at an ATM in the Bloomfield area around 9pm last night after leaving a Republican phone bank.
The woman told police that the suspect, described only as a dark-skinned African-American man about 6'4", stole $60 from her and became enraged after seeing a bumper sticker supporting Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain on her car.
The woman said the suspect punched and kicked her.

Note two big reasons for doubt:
1) The attack occurred, somewhat fortuitously for the mugger and/or a dishonest witness, outside the view of surveillance cameras -- which are of course all around a bank.
2) The woman refused medical attention. Why? If a woman's face is sliced, doesn't she want it to be immediately knitted up by a good plastic surgeon who can minimize scarring?
Two things. First, the thugs know where the cameras are at the bank so it's possible they would act accordingly. Second, she may have driven herself to the hospital of her choice after consulting some natives about what would be a good hospital since she's from Texas. If I had an option I'd drive myself and find a hospital in a rich area if I had a sensitive wound that needed expert care.
However, it is good to be skeptical (not that the MSM media would be at all skeptical if the show was on the other foot) since 20 year old girls sometimes do crazy stuff for attention (hell people sometimes do crazy stuff for attention). Usually more of a leftist martyrdom complex deal but who knows.

As a female, let me say this... most women probably WOULD refuse to receive medical attention, if offered by the police.
WHY? Because the politce would probaly drop her off at the nearest hospital Emergency Room, where she would probably be treated by an Emergency Room physician.
I myself would prefer to get a plastic surgeon or dermatologist to treat me immediately. Therefore, I would "refuse treatment," also.
So that doesn't mean the woman wasn't seriously hurt or that this story is necessarily "fishy".

And the fastest way to see a plastic surgeon or dermatologist if you are from out of town, is go to the ER, be seen by the doc, and get a referral. Otherwise, you will have a problem finding one who will see you immediately.

In Seattle all the ambulances go to Harborview. They focus on acute trauma types of things. If I was shot, that's where I'd go.
But, I wouldn't go there for plastic or reconstructive surgery if you were paying me.
You have to practically throw a fit to avoid an ambulance trip to Harborview though. You can't tell the driver "Take me to Swedish" and get any results. You have to step it up to pretty firm statements to avoid the trip. You get "Refused medical attention."

You have any idea how many people hook up with another person for drugs or sex and stop at an ATM to get money to pay them and then get mugged? A lot. Then they lie to the cops and even though they were attacked, it's hard to argue to the jury to convict when they themselves were involved in a crime.

Refusing medical attention isn't such a red flag. First off, people in distress make odd choices all the time. Secondly, I've scratched/cut myself a few times and simply applied a bit of neosporin when I got a chance.
As to not being on camera (maybe), criminals know where cameras are. What percentage of crimes are caught on camera? 1%?

Maybe the victim had a friend who could give her immediate treatment from a good plastic surgeon/dermatologist. We don't know her story.
If she really is from Texas, I would bet she is a college student (maybe Pitt or Carnegie Mellon) and was working with Young Republicans to do volunteer work for McCain. So maybe she has a friend whose father/mother is a local physician, who could help her get good treatment.
Also, maybe the victim didn't know the neighborhoods that well and stopped in an unsafe area to get money when this occurred.

I think it is interesting that the victim receives the scrutiny.
Guys, the story's being examined so closely because (a.) there's ample recent precedent for caution and (b.) the consequence for overreacting in either direction are pretty fucking dire, but far moreso if we overreact to a story that turns out to be false.
Nobody's saying she's lying outright, they're saying there's reason to wait until more evidence comes in from people who are actually doing the investigation, not making guesses no matter HOW well-informed.

It's very easy to FAKE a black eye. I know a woman who faked a black eye and other contusions to have her x-husband arrested for assault.
They did arrest him, he had an ironclad alibi, and the black eye and contusions turned out to be the result of skillfully applied makeup. The examining doctors were not permitted to touch the injuries by the "victim" because they were "too painful".
The woman ended up getting 2 years in prison.
The lack of broken small capillaries in the white of the eye are suspicious.

I dunno, the "reverse B" doesn't seem so odd to me. Presumeably he was holding her down/restricting her movement (I"m guessing she struggled at least a little) in some way so that may have caused the attacker to carve from an angle. Or, he's dyslexic.

However, I do think restraint is probably the best measure. I believe this is what we are going to see after the election and it does not matter who wins.

Possibly, but holding someone in a headlock is an awkward position. To write it this way would require that the attacker lean over her head and carve or do it from behind and carve blindly. It would seem easier just to turn her head to the right and write a B in the usual orientation.
And unfortunately unless the attacker is caught and confesses or she confesses to a hoax, we'll probably never find out the full truth about the incident.

The backwards B is easily explained.
The mugger came up from behind, grabbed her in a choke hold, maybe slapped her in the face once (or a few times) resulting in the black eye, reached into her purse / pocket to take the money, saw the McCain bumber sticker, then scratched the B.
Scratched from this position, the B would look normal.
Looking at her normally, the B would look reversed.

Also, the young gal being from Texas, she would know damn well to stay out of any ER. Maybe it is different in the Metroplex or Houston or the PRoAustin, but out west those places are very expensive, the doctors are not in anyone's network, and the care is kind of "hit or miss".

It also sounds like she went home right away and then had to be talked into telling the cops. Probably saw what happened to Joe the Plumber and didn't want to go through the same thing. Rape victims often don't tell because they don't want to be dragged through the humiliation and cross-examination, and this may be a minor variant of the same impulse.

I was a victim of domestic abuse a few times, where my ex-husband punched me in the eye. The next day I would have a black eye. No broken capillaries in the white of the eye that I remember. But I would wear dark sunglasses for a few days.
If this did happen, I don't blame the girl for not wanting to initially go to the hospital. I never did go after getting beaten up by my ex - even when he wrapped a telephone cord around my neck & tried to choke me. (In retrospect, that was insanity. But it's the way I felt at the time.)
All that being said, let's see what else the police discover.

Still assault and still awful, if true, but we should make sure not to be misleading. The black-eye looks genuine to me. The backwards "B" could also be because she took a self-portrait in a mirror (I'd expect to see a flash hotspot somewhere in the shot, but it may have been cropped out.)
The EXIF data on the JPG is intact, though it doesn't tell us very much. According to the data it was taken with an Olympus point-and-shoot at 2008:10:23 10:49:55, using a flash, lens zoomed to a middling focal-length. It was re-saved at 2008:10:23 15:51:49. It was obviously cropped and probably resized, but it looks like it was saved with the software that came bundled with the camera (Roxio PhotoSuite) and that tends to make me think that it hasn't been digitally manipulated. At least not in any sophisticated way. (Of course it's not hard to paint a black eye or scratch a letter on your face. If she was inclined to fakery then Photoshopping would probably be overkill.)

After repeatedly hitting, kicking and threatening the woman, the McCain camp says the suspect carved a "B" in her cheek for "Barack" Obama.
According to the police report, the officer confirmed that he "observed the wound on the right side of [her] face.
If the wound was observed on the right side of her face, then it was a reversed "B." If the image was flipped (mirrored, actually) then the "wound" would have been on the left side of her face. Oh, and whoever observed that her black eye wasn't accompanied by broken capillaries is right. Someone should get a search warrant for the young Republican's makeup kit.

Seriously, it could be a hoax, and I can follow the argument for waiting for more info, but I'm baffled by some of the critiques being leveled against a reported victim of armed robbery and assault. I'd "refuse medical treatment" myself if that means an ambulance ride and an ER visit I don't absolutely have to have. Unless this woman held something back, she just took an even $60 out of the ATM, which, with her age, doesn't argue for unlimited resources. Even assuming crime victims make rational decisions in the aftermath, which they don't always. And I don't think muggers go out of their way to get caught on camera.
The one discrepancy I see is the choice of the letter "B," not the famous "O." Somebody, criminal or hoaxer, needs to get with the program.

Liberty/Pearl is located in Bloomfield, a predominantly Italian neighborhood, but multi-cultural. A couple blocks NORTH and NE and you're in a dangerous neighborhood. That area is predominantly AA. She is a COLLEGE REPUBLICAN VOLUNTEER, which explains her McCain sticker. My initial thought after reading the police report was "What the heck is she doing with a McCain sticker in that part of town?" Her not being a native explains it.
Look at her Twitter entries and notice the TIME and DATE. She was clearly driving around looking for an ATM and didn't know where she was since she is from out of town, and stumbled into a questionable area of town. $60 dollars seems an appropriate withdrawal for a college student, but that depends I know.
About the "B." The report says the perp was about 6'4, 200 lbs. From her wounds, we can discern that he's RH. All he had to do was grab her from behind, hold her head with his left hand, and scratch a "B" into her cheek with his right hand, which would appear UPSIDE DOWN from the front, but not to him. TheBigOldDog #262 explains it well. If he punches her in the face from the front, he hits HER left eye. See photo.
I'm waiting for more info on the surveillance video. Have they really checked all surveillance cameras? Seems like they could check with other places in the area for possible footage.
I don't have any reason to doubt she isn't telling the truth, but I have some suspicions. The "B" seems pretty clean and neatly scratched into her face. I don't see any other facial wounds. Just a neat "B." And why a B? I don't get that. Barack? B*tch? What?
Also, her Twitter page entries just don't sit right with me. Immediately prior to and following the attack the entries feel too neat and predictable. But that's just an impression, nothing factual. I don't know.

Never underestimate the stupidity of people. Carvings with backwards text have turned out to be hoaxes in the past. And yes people are that dumb.
And note that all of the letters in Obama's initials, BHO, are vertically symmetric. So there's no way to tell if a letter is reversed rather than upside down. Coincidence? I think not.

Although I am one of those Kos Kidz (that, um, *affectionate nickname* makes me giggle a little, as I'm an over 40 woman who has always considered myself Independent rather than a fire breathing lib) that supports Obama, my heart goes out to this young woman for having to go through such a frightening experience.

From a woman's point of view there are a few details about the story that jump out at me.
As a Pittsburgher, I know the exact corner where she says she was mugged. It's not a "bad" neighborhood although a mugging after dark at an ATM is certainly possible as they can pretty much happen anywhere in a city neighborhood. That is an area with a lot of foot traffic though. As somone who has lived in cities for 15 years -- even rough neighborhoods-- I wouldn't have walked around alone in a strange city neighborhood at night. That being said, I don't doubt that she was mugged.
First, the backwards "B" really doesn't look like a knife had much to do with it-- that only works if it were a really dull knife without a point. Think about what kind a cut a knife actually makes and then look at the picture again. Second, from what I've read she refused medical attention when the EMTs arrived. Who does that after being assaulted? The gap of time between the mugging and the police being called is a little odd. Plus there are plenty of businesses around there-- I would have run into one of those instead of heading back to my car by myself. As a woman I would have worried about being followed, I would have gone to where there were other people as soon as possible.
Finally, maybe it takes another woman to recognize what running/streaking mascara after crying looks like, but that really doesn't look like a shiner to me. It's not swollen and it lacks any sort of redness or tint of shiner blue/green. (Hey, I'd probably cry after being mugged at knifepoint.)
The whole thing seems a bit fishy. Not impossible, just somewhat improbable. If it is true my heart goes out to her and it's freaking sick and I hope they catch the guy and lock him up.

1. The backwards "B." Yes, it could be upside down, but the loop closer to her chin looks slightly larger than the loop toward her head. Perhaps the photo is backwards left to right.
2. Also, one would expect that any letter carved into the face of a terrified girl would be a little sloppier. This B looks carefully "drawn." BTW, why a "B"? Why not an "O"? Would an enraged McCain supporting mugger carve a "J" in his victim's face?
