CNN In Desperate Bid To Hit Bottom Before MSNBC...They May Have Succeeded (See Updates For Um, Nuance)

Yesterday, CNN was complaining about Sarah Palin refusing to do an interview with them. She did one today and based on the outright dishonesty and hack job they did, it simply shows she should have skipped it.

Some asshat reporter Obama shill totally distorts a quote from National Review to make Palin look bad and put her on the defensive. Rich Lowry puts the quote in full context.

Watching press coverage of the Republican candidate for vice president, it’s sometimes hard to decide whether Sarah Palin is incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt, backward, or — or, well, all of the above. Palin, the governor of Alaska, has faced more criticism than any vice-presidential candidate since 1988, when Democrats and the press tore into Dan Quayle. In fact, Palin may have it even worse than Quayle, since she’s taking flak not only from Democrats and the press but from some conservative opinion leaders as well....

Yes, there are legitimate concerns about Palin’s lack of experience. Who wouldn’t, at the very least, wish that she had more time in the governor’s office on her résumé? But a look at Palin’s 20 months in power, along with interviews with people who worked with her, shows her to be a serious executive, a governor who picked important things to do and got them done — and who didn’t just stumble into an 80 percent job-approval rating.

Below the fold is how this hack actually asked the question.

For those without access to the video, he only quoted the bold part.

As Lowry say, "I'm disgusted, but not surprised."

These pricks really are taking their cue from Kos and his 'crush' them diktat. I'm sure they will all be richly rewarded when their personal savior ascends to the Presidency. Or you know, look like fools when he gets his ass kicked.

In watching the clip again the talking head doesn't know who wrote the piece. My guess is he simply got the question from a producer. That simply means there's two assholes who should get fired.

Commenter "Bilby" says that's Drew Griffin who has been on the ACORN beat and pretty tough on Obama. Is that true? If so, I really think my guess that it's a producer who gave him the question since he didn't know who wrote the piece is likely true. So um, maybe I was a little quick on the 'asshat' 'shill' and 'fire' trigger.

UPDATE: It is Griffin and Byron York, who wrote the story that Griffin culled 'the quote' from has a longer transcript of the question and he did take the quote wildly out of context.

UPDATE II: I found the full transcript. All in all it's actually a good interview by a guy who has been about the only fair voice at his network. He did chunk the quote and question though. Given the over all interview and his body of work to date, I guess it can just be chalked up to a bad moment..

7 What's his name?

You know, the press will turn on Obama if he is made president. He will control the message and they will feel his control. These guys are not just liberals, they are corporate entities and if they can't do their job because of the jack boot on their necks, they will turn and bite. We'll see if he's as good as Clinton at feeding them worthless goodies to keep them under control.

In the end, I WANT McCain to win so he can poke their eyes during press briefings, he won't pull any punches!

Me too on the transcript, work computers have no audio. (I appreciate it.) That said, I already know where this is going.

In a way, though, this can't do anything but backfire. This will be highly spread by the McCain campaign, who will raise unholy hell about it, and more folks will be made aware of just how in the tank the media is for Obama. For this to come directly after the Joe the Plumber sliming, they're trying to give us the election.

They just can't help themselves, the arrogant bastards.

I don't have time to be watching some BS hack job, but if that asshole asked her a question about how she should respond to somone that said she is "...incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt, backward, or — or, well, all of the above", then it doesn't matter who he supports.  How the hell is that question even REMOTELY fair ?  And this from an allegedly respectable news outlet, CNN.  That's what passes for an intelligent interview ???

Unbelievable.

Let's see: Dan Quayle gets handed a spelling bee card (prepared by a card carrying highly competent member of the National Teacher's Union) which misspells the word "potato"---the highly competent and professional but underpaid teacher had added an "e" on the end of the word.

Being about as prepared as Biden (after all Quayle had spent 12 years in Congress and the Senate--an experience which tends to dumb a person down) Quayle asked the kid how to spell "potato"--the kid spelled it correctly, but Quayle looked at the back of the spelling bee card and told the kid his answer was incorrect.

Well the main stream media putzes jumped all over this --said Quayle was so doggone that he didn't even know how to spell "potato".  They said he was a doofus and yo yo and so stupid he didn't belong in the V-P's office.

Well lookee here: MSM journalist one of the truly intelligent wise men of all tie gets handed an incomplete and incorrect script by his producer.  Isn't he stoopid, a dooofusss and a yo yo yo!!!

Well, I say it's time to call for a complete investigation into the background of  "Joanne The Teacher" who slipped Quayle that spurious card---and maybe also maybe the background of  Jack Off the Producer who slipped the reader the spurious question. .

I really think my guess that it's a producer who gave him the question since he didn't know who wrote the piece is likely true. So um, maybe I was a little quick on the 'asshat' 'shill' and 'fire' trigger.

Remember, it was Mary Mapes, who was the producer of the Rathergate story on the forged documents, who really did most of the legwork on that story.

I would easily believe that a producer fed him that question, though he bears responsibility for actually using it on air.

Dan Rather's big mistake was standing by the story and not throwing Mapes, deservedly, under the bus. If ill-served by a producer, Drew Griffin had better salvage his credibility by on-air apologizing, and naming the producer/researcher who misled him and made him look like an ass while interviewing the potential Vice President of the United States.

ASSHOLE: That was in the National Review.

SARAH: I'd like to talk to that person.

Since the author was Byron York, albeit in a much different context than implied, I think having a nice long talk/interview with York would be an excellent idea.

York is a solid journalist, maybe the best thing they've got over there.

Air it unedited on the Internet, a good half hour to hour long interview with him so folks can go and check it out themselves, and get an unfiltered view of how she thinks. Even throw her a tough but fair curveball or two.

30 Fuck it, Drew, don't feel bad. Works for CNN = asshat/shill, regardless of a good story or two.

Even Glenn Beck was smart enough to bail on CNN for Fox News. I think it's better that these networks become total liberal bastions without a single conservative voice - makes things more obvious for the American people.

The only reason it's a plausible question is because NR publishes Brookhiser, Parker, Frum, and a lot of other folks who have said this kind of crapola.  And KJ Lopez keeps fluffing Peggy Noonan over there too.

So NR can cry that they are being treated unfairly, but I don't really expect their complaint to carry much water.  Byron York personally has a fair gripe, but NR as an institution?  not so much

38

I think you all are misinterpreting this.

The point of the Byron York article was that Sarah Palin was being mishandled by her, um, handlers, and that that was leading to negative press.  Drew was asking if she agreed, and he mangled a quote from the article in the process.

I say it was an honest mistake.

Posted by: TomM. at October 21, 2008 07:14 PM (dr1s2)

39

her reply was awesom though, she asked him 3 times who wrote it and he would not say.

Then she said i would like to talk to that person. She handled him.

Whining it was a hack job is useless. And not needed. She handled him.  Her rally's were good today to. She hammered Biden and Senator Government for the coming crisis he will endure.

In that interview she said if she were to say what biden did she would have been "clobbered" for it.

40 You all are off base on this one-  after she interrupted, he finished the question-

"But they were talking about the fact that your experience as governor is not getting out.  Do you feel trapped in this campaign, that your message is not getting out, and if so who do you blame?"

That's a fair and fairly softball question.

43 TomM,

Nope, look at the question

"Governor, you've been mocked in the press, the press has been pretty hard on you, the Democrats have been pretty hard on you, but also some conservatives have been pretty hard on you as well.  The National Review had a story saying that, you know, I can't tell if Sarah Palin is incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt or all of the above."

York's point was to critique the media coverage. The way Griffin asked was as if NR actually was making that charge.

Also, based on her answer Palin clearly interpreted the way we are.

Posted by: DrewM. at October 21, 2008 07:18 PM (hlYel)

44 The question is perfectly designed to trigger the "I'm not voting this time because McCain sucks, but I can't wait to vote for Palin in 2012" crowd.  But you guys still fall for it....you really can't see that the MSM is playing you for chumps?

Posted by: funky chicken at October 21, 2008 07:19 PM (xyyHG)

45 When National Review allows columnists like Kathleen Parker and invites others like Peggy Noonan to publish their articles with them should there really be a surprise?

No. The media will and has used such article excerpts as cannon fodder against conservative candidates.

This is an unfair advantage to democrats. For example, CNN reporters are not going through Puffington Post or The Nation looking for controversial quotes to throw at democrat candidates.

Posted by: Michelle's American White Racist at October 21, 2008 07:20 PM (NLtVk)

46

Okay, but check this out. Add in the subordinate clause, it doesn't change the substance of the question.

"Governor, you've been mocked in the press, the press has been pretty hard on you, the Democrats have been pretty hard on you, but also some conservatives have been pretty hard on you as well.  The National Review had a story saying that, you know, [based on the media coverage], I can't tell if Sarah Palin is incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt or all of the above."

But [Byron was] talking about the fact that your experience as governor is not getting out.  Do you feel trapped in this campaign, that your message is not getting out, and if so who do you blame?

Posted by: TomM. at October 21, 2008 07:22 PM (dr1s2)

47 Posted by: staghounds at October 21, 2008 07:16 PM (lsmjU)

There's a difference in saying the media is doing a hack job in reporting on you and 'your message isn't getting out and who is to blame'. The fuller context of the quote shows York was answering that question and not making a statement about what he thought of Palin.

If she did interrupt and give that answer he should have asked it again and clarified what he meant or they should have not run the bite.

Posted by: DrewM. at October 21, 2008 07:23 PM (hlYel)

48

Her answer is indeed awesome....she doesn't fall into the "yes, McCain is holding me back" trap, and she doesn't get pissed off (visibly) that the elitist "conservative" creeps have bashed her.

Perhaps Drew Griffin could do an interview where he asks Joe Biden if he knows how to count to 3?  Or if Biden has helped Obama to figure out that there are only 50 states in the USA?

Posted by: funky chicken at October 21, 2008 07:23 PM (xyyHG)

50 Funky

After what Biden said, I hope that Noonan, Frum, Hebert, Parker et al feel like gynormous assholes. 26 years and Biden says that, and they're feeling out of the loop because Palin doesn't speak their brand of articulate pure bullshit, but pedestrian straight talk.

After Palin's great dressing down to day this

"But I guess the looming crisis that most worries the Obama campaign right now is Joe Biden’s next speaking engagement. Let’s call that crisis scenario number five."

must have felt might nice to say and I hope Noonan and Parker felt an inch tall.

61 Unwittingly or no, National Review lends its credibility to anyone who has their written work published with them.

This includes David Frum and Kathleen Parker. In particular, Ms. Parker has taken it upon herself to recommend Gov. Palin be returned to her Alaska kitchen barefoot and in curlers.

For Drew Giffin at CNN to inaccurately quote Byron or Jonah is one thing. He should be called to account on it (but sadly won't).

But when Kathryn Lopez this week invites Peggy Noonan to publish her work at National Review she is slapping Peggy's articles with the Seal of National Review Approval. Great!

When was the late time you saw quotes taken (accurately or no) from The Atlantic, The New Republic, or equivalent and thrown democrat candidates?

66 You know, Drew Giffin has performed some excellent reports of late on ACORN and such. I suspect that is why he was selected to conduct the interview. His recent Special Investigative Unit reports have astonished Anderson Cooper and his ilk.

No question, he messed up the quote and won't be held to account.

But I think Gov. Palin handled it splendidly.

76 This is a media war. i think some of the blame lies with the guy who wrote the article.

Journos and politicians have to be careful with irony. You should not say the opposite of what you mean, it WILL get taken out of context.

OK you can use it if you're a blogger but that's because blogs work in a different way to official speeches and the printed media. They are supposed to be informal and disrespectful. This discourages formal word-for-word quotes and it takes the sting out of criticism, because it's bound to have some tongue in cheek.

You have to ask yourself, if you took the start and end off this sentence, and put some ellipses and stuck it next to another half a sentence from 10 pages later, can it be used against me or my allies.

Irony is a sure way to get in trouble, not because the public are too dumb to get it, only lefties are, but because of warlike journalism in the enemy camp.

77 I put a link to the full transcript in an update. I'd say he just had a bad moment or some bad prep information. Overall he's been the only decent reporter at CNN and the rest of the interview is more than fair.

Well, I did say the question was worded badly (#64).  And that he mangled the quote (#3.  So I do think the question sucked.

But, I think that "Byron York blames a good amount of your bad press on the fact that you were immediately surrounded by a bunch of incompetent Bushie moron handlers who somehow turned you into Scott McClellan for your Couric interview.  Does that sound about right?" is an EXCELLENT question.  And it's the question asked by the Byron York article.

Posted by: TomM. at October 21, 2008 08:14 PM (dr1s2)

82 #68, Sherlock, there's a few ripoffs of that one that were popular with AFSOC guys, particularly Spectre gunship crews. There's a bunch of AC-130 crew patches with the vultures and "Patience my ass, I'm gonna go kill something."  Google Images should find you some examples.

Posted by: SGT Dan at October 21, 2008 08:26 PM (nranl)

Actually, it's pretty simple.  If he was only asking about her reaction to the media's horrible portrayal of her, he did not, in any way shape of form, need to include the "incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt, backward, or — or, well, all of the above" quote.  It was unnecessary and therefore added by choice.  Why ?  Clearly so the audience - regardless of the context, point of the question, or the answer - could link Sarah Palin with the words incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt, and backwards.

And it really doesn't matter if it was done intentionally, or just out of habit due to an inherent liberal bias by either the reporter or his producer.  It all comes from the same place.

Posted by: deadrody at October 21, 2008 08:29 PM (aCKVb)

84
Tom, sorry, but the question as it was asked was strongly misleading, although it may have had a good point. And the correspondent should have known the source of the quotation; if he had, Sarah probably would have responded in a much more substantive way.

That being said, her reply was awesome: she didn't cringe or retreat or apologize, but stood her ground. A bad question led to a great moment.

And on the whole, I thought it was a good interview: some softball questions, some probing ones, and for the most part a civil tone. And I didn't see the positive bits being left on the cutting room floor.

Whoever said that she need to shorten her answers is absolutely right. Contrast her reply to the Biden question, with her reply to the mangled York quotation: the former meanders, as it seems she's fighting her way through the coaching; while the latter is brief, pungent, and sharp. Also, it seems that she focuses when she's angry; with most people, anger makes us lose control. I would not want to be an official facing a pissed-off Sarah Palin!

87 "or the answer - could link Sarah Palin with the words incompetent, stupid, unqualified, corrupt, and backwards."

He not only included them to link Palin to the words, but to put Palin on the defensive and cause a unflattering response. He was fishing for a poor reaction from Palin. It was deliberate and obvious to me.
