| Abscam Conspirator/Troop Defamer Jack Murtha: I Didn't Mean To Call My Constituents Racists, I Meant To Say They're Rednecks (Who, By the Way, Are Racist!)U.S. Rep. John Murtha is calling many of the people who put him in office "rednecks." The news comes one week after Murtha claimed the area is racist, then apologized for that comment. In explaining his comments about racism, Murtha told WTAE it's difficult for many in the area to change. Murtha said that just five to 10 years ago the entire area was "redneck." Now Murtha said only certain segments of the population are holding on to those racist feelings. Just days after classifying western Pennsylvania as racist, Murtha took a step back from those comments, albeit a small one. "What I said, that indicted everybody, that's not what I meant at all. What I mean is there's still folks that have a problem voting for someone because they are black," Murtha said. Murtha said the history of southwestern Pennsylvania is rife with racism. "This whole area, years ago, was really redneck," Murtha told Channel 4 Action News. Murtha believes there is one segment of the population which is holding on to its racist beliefs and he said it's difficult for them to change. Murtha said it may be even more difficult for them to vote for Barack Obama. "Particularly older people. They want change but they don't want to see things go too far," Murtha said.Well that explains it then. Thanks to WilliamA. CommentsPosted by: Kestrelâ™ at October 20, 2008 06:47 PM (0106Q) 2

Well at least he clarified things.
Ya know, I'm a redneck. I get that neck from doing what's called "work", during the "day", and emitting what's called "sweat", even when it's cold, which just makes you colder. It's all about the pork. If Mac wants to win this thing, he should just promise to give the bottom 95% earners $100 grand. He would win in a landslide. And then say, "whoops, can't afford it." Which is the same thing Obama is going to say when he gets in.
Posted by: Judd at October 20, 2008 06:51 PM (BXHeE) 12
Nothing new for Democrats. Go to any liberal blog and you'll see example after example of Democrats decrying the evils of racism and in the same sentence making their hatred of rednecks/crackers/hillbillies crystal clear. The only thing Democrats hate more than rednecks is Christians.

Like Honeycutt's operation in Georgia, Russell's campaign is spending heavily on a direct-mail campaign. Hey, that's my Congressman, too (and I wrote a letter to the editor protesting his comments that actually got published, so woo-hoo for me!). He keeps getting elected because he's good at bringing federal cash into the district and he usually runs unopposed or with a joke candidate as his opposition. Not this time; his opponent is outraising him something like 3-1 and I think he has a shot at getting tossed.

Now I don't know if Murtha's constituents are either racists or rednecks--but they sure are effing dumb to take this crap from Murtha and to keep re-electing him. These old mossbacks get up in Congress and think that as long as they keep shoving the earmarks to their District, they can say and do durn near anything they want. I live in the old Carlos Moorhead congressional district in suburban Los Angeles; back in the day the then residents of the district sent their GOP Congressman Moorhead back to the House of Representatives for about 25 years; the demographics of the District changed--or maybe the scalawags up in Sacramento redistricted to create a "safe" Democrat seat and no matter what I do, I'll be represented by a Democrat until I die or move out of the District. When are we going to have a civil rights organization for rednecks? How about starting a Rednecks for Russell?
BTW, the term "redneck" originated to describe people from the Scottish-English border and was most often used to describe Presbyterians (Chris-s-s-s-tians!). As a descendant of those borderers, shouldn't I be offended by Murtha's bigotry? Posted by: Reiver at October 20, 2008 07:05 PM (oliA4) 31
So he extends the insult to all rednecks. Since he confused rednecks with racists, it would seem there is at least some subconscious connection that he is verbalizing. I wish Murtha the worst. He is a complete POS. He needs to get his comeuppance this election - is there any hope of that? Posted by: connertown at October 20, 2008 07:06 PM (lhJxs) 32
American Rifleman magazine gave Murtha an NRA rating of "A", and they don't even list William Russell as running for election in that district. Why is that?

A little off topic, but not too much.
I live on the outskirts of Murtha's district and four years ago this whole area was covered with Kerry-Edwards signs. Every house had one, practically. I couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one of the Botched Joke's damned signs. Today, well, I can count the Obama signs on one hand. Not sure if that means anything, but it is a nice anecdote to make everybody on our side perk up a little. Posted by: Tim B. at October 20, 2008 07:07 PM (PuIP7) 34

I cannot imagine McCain pulling out of Colorado. Palin was here all day and drew 11,000 in Colorado Springs and at least 6,000 in Loveland (my estimate, since the Budweiser Events Center holds 7,200); I'm not sure how many she drew tonight in Grand Junction. I regard 6,000 for Loveland as a great turnout; even with Fort Collins nearby, this is still pretty much a small-town area.
The crowd was okay during the preliminary speeches but went completely nuts when Palin and company were introduced. The enthusiasm was high and sustained. It didn't hurt that Hank Williams Jr. led us in the national anthem and sang his "McCain-Palin" song. Palin delivered a great stump speech and even referred to Obama's tax policy as socialism. Is McCain pulling out of Colorado? No--even as I type, a McCain ad is playing. Posted by: OmniBob at October 20, 2008 09:02 PM (1cOMn) 69

#29-Amos. Scranton(drink), at it's founding(1860-1895) had more Conneticut Lawyers than all other proffessions combined. In the Providence section they had mock trials for shits and giggles. Kinda pre-Vaudeville. This is especially curious because Scranton had no county seat. Lackawanna County had yet to be created using parts of Luzerne and Wyoming county. So apparently they just rode the 60 miles between courthouses recording deeds.....Scranton(drink) was named after 2 brothers of that name who spread mined coal around the woods and fields to make early investors think the shit was just there for the picking. Yes, a city founded, and named for fraudsters...The Scrantons went on to redeem themselves through many philanthropic endeavors over the next 4 generations. Google William Scranton. Remarkable man. When he retired he left his huge-ass mansion, MarWorth, to be a Drug Alcohol rehab center in the Abingtons. I always love returning there and hearing recently detoxed people bitching about Bush/Repubs...They usually STFU when I explain that a REPUBLICAN, and the local WASP's that run the place, just saved their life. My family has a wing named after it. Yeah, big fucking surprise huh?. ... Ok, sorry my point is that Scranton (drink for me) has a long history of windbags, thieves, liars, talented drunks (Jason Miller from the Excorcist, Sleepy Jim Crowley ((1 of the 4 Horseman)) and his son who set a piano playing Guiness record that stood for years) whores and blowhards. Upon re-reading this post, I rest my long-assed case.

Tushar-
I am not worried about any of the 04 Red states except Ohio (20 EC votes). I was a "Republican poll worker" (who voted for Badnarik) here in Ohio in 2004. I worked in two precincts that had both barely went for Gore in 2000- and Kerry increased the Dem margins in both by 2-3% in '04- so I went home at 9:30 PM thinking Kerry had won the election. We now have "voter ID" checked at the polling place in Ohio (The pollworker in 2006 where I voted actually apologized when asking for my ID- while I was already pulling my driver's license from my wallet that was in my hand when approaching the desk.), so the cheating will now be contained among the "unrestricted" absentee ballots (See the "Brownlee Avenue community organizers"...), and those who vote a 'provisional ballot'. IMO, it doesn't seem as close as 2004... I still think McCain wins Ohio. Posted by: Fletch at October 20, 2008 10:23 PM (c/JJC) 78
I'm hearing people (even donks) saying things like..."fuck pork projects, I want pork in my paycheck". Most pork edifices are given to out of state contractors and very few locals get jobs. Many people are fed up with their asshole making national news for this crap. As for Murtha and Kanjorski (Donk, NE Pa), they seem to be toast according to even local liberal papers. I pray the vibes are true.

Hutch1200, I hear from my bro-in-law that Carney in Scranton is in some trouble too... the two suburban jackals (Sestak and Murphy) are in PUMA territory... and Melissa Hart out west (north Pgh burbs) has a shot.
If Sarah makes a stop or two more here, there's a chance for a plus-6. I think a plus-2 would be sweet, but why not go for it all? Posted by: bleep John Murtha at October 20, 2008 11:18 PM (tK42Y) 80

As a new, young (23), and semi-redneck resident of Western PA, and Murtha's district especially (Maryland transplant) I look quite forward to voting against this jackass. Hell, maybe I can find me a local ACRON rep and vote against him 7-10 times, with my dog voting a few times for good measure. Dear Murtha: FOAD, that is all. Dismissed. Posted by: paranoidpyro at October 21, 2008 12:11 AM (W4Ivi) 82
I live in NC but have "redneck, racist" family in PA...I just laid a few ducketts on the Russell campaign.
Posted by: The Hammer at October 21, 2008 12:49 AM (P89vv) 83
Over on the Corner Mark Heminway has some actual polling on this race from the horse's mouth - the Russell campaign itself:
"Prior to all of this breaking in the last week, a source close to the Russell campaign told me that their polling had them down 14 points against Murtha. But that same poll also had some good news for Russell -- Murtha, even with a 14 point lead, didn't have support over 50 percent, and 40 percent of those polled thought it was time for a change in Congressional leadership. Further, only 24 percent of those polled were aware Russell was running against Murtha." Emphasis on the 'prior to all of this breaking'. That is Murtha, with 100% name recognition and total voter awareness of who he is, was under 50% BEFORE he called his constituents "racist", "confused" "rednecks". And BEFORE the Russell campaign had run a single advertisement pointing this out. You think the people in Western PA haven't heard that Murtha called them racists last week? You think they might hear as reinforcement that he's now calling them "confused rednecks"? Tack on the 2-3% minimum poll bump that democrats always get in polls and I'd say this one will go down to the wire, but there's a very good chance old Murtha, the only "ex-Marine" in the country, may be moving into Happy Pastures Retirement Village a little earlier than he was planning on. Posted by: Jon at October 21, 2008 01:20 AM (GbSxl) 84
Markie Marxist sez: "But we Marxists don't like rednecks, so it's okay to insult them. And they generally oppose us politically, which is the reason we don't like them, so they're politically incorrect too. We just haven't been able to criminalize redneckism yet. Maybe after this election. Total domination of America!" Posted by: Chas at October 21, 2008 02:30 PM (tf4qU) 85
