Palin Power vs. Benign Biden

A tale of two campaign rallies in the Battleground State of New Mexico.

Sarah Palin: Draws 10,000 people (and maybe a Space Alien or two) to an event in Roswell today.

Joe Biden: Draws 2,500 people to an event in Mesilla (That's pronounced Messiah in Spanish I think...damn the Obama campaign and their subtlety!) on Friday.

Gore carried New Mexico by 300 votes in 2000. Bush carried it by 6,000 in 2004.

As Sarah Palin was outdrawing her competitor by 7,500 people, Peggy Noonan was disappointed to learn that C-Span's Green Room offered camembert but not brie.

Disappointed today b/c neither Palin nor McCain made mention of Biden's comments at the SF fundraiser.  Meanwhile, Obama in his stump speech hit Palin on her NC fundraiser comments about pro-America areas.  Are they saving it for tomorrow?  McCain has shown his willingness to call out Obama's attempts to play the race card in the past (e.g. dollar bills, John Lewis), so I wonder if he'll authorize Palin to incorporate Biden's comments as part of the stump in the state where she re-introduced the American public to Bill Ayers.

Both McCain and Palin need new material in their stump speeches: we've heard them say the same thing for four days now.  You cannot drive a narrative in the media if you keep on repeating the same lines.  Hitting Biden would be a good change of pace and a good way to grab control of the narrative.

The funny thing about crowds is that McCain is starting to draw some decently sized crowds that are pretty rowdy on his own without Sarah.  It's almost as if it took him six months to finally be accepted by the base, even after the Palin pick.  Ayers, ACORN, and spread the wealth must have struck a chord.

I wish some of those at the ropeline would scream at him to use Wright.  McCain will probably appear with Joe the Plumber on Wednesday; after that, we need something to serve as the climax for the final 1.5 weeks of the election.  Obama won't talk to the press or anyone off script for the final two weeks.

21 mesablue: "Palin also gave SNL their highest ratings in fourteen years."

That's good and bad, but mostly bad. I'd prefer that SNL sink back down to their crappy numbers and that NBC fail.

Good to see that a) Palin is such a draw, and b) a significant audience has been tuning out the show.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at October 19, 2008 08:59 PM (sI5Ho)

22 FYI, Roswell = McCain country, in 2004 it went for Bush 68%-31%.  Iin 2004 the vote total for Bush was about 14,000.  Total population of Chavez county - ~ 65K.  So pulling 10K (even if many of those were from surrounding counties) is
impressive.

Mesilla = Obama country, a suburb of Las Cruces (home of NMSU), went for Kerry in 2004 51%-48%.  Total population of Dona Ana county - ~ 180K.

So, I'd say the base is a little more pumped for Sarah than Joe.  It would have been interesting to see the numbers if Sarah had gone to Las Cruces.

25 I'll admit, zEkE, Obama's 200,000 Germans rally was pretty impressive. Not as impressive as, say, a Hasselhoff rally in Germany, but it was a pretty big number.

The reason I focus on Palin's rallies vs. Biden's is to show the Kathleen Parker's and Peggy Noonan's of the world what a drag on the ticket actually looks like.

But thanks for the concern! I'll file your suggestion in the appropriate place. Bend over.

33 OK Jack, I'll play.  Lets follow your logic.  A 4 to 1 (10000:2500) rally turnout advantage on a given day means Biden is a drag on the ticket.

Therefore a 20 to 1 ratio must mean someone is a huuuuge drag on their ticket.  That would be McCain who drew about 5000 the same day Obama drew 100,000.  Isn't this fun now?  And completely pointless too, yay!

The point is which VP candidate is drawing relatively higher crowds particularly WRT the top of the ticket. Did you notice the Noonan remark? That's the tip that some think Palin's a "drag on the ticket."

Palin outdraws McCain. Biden does not outdraw Obama. Biden holds back Obama like McCain holds back Palin. It just so happens that Palin outdraws Biden, but that is only part of what Jack M. and DrewM. were pointing out.

Ok zEKE, you asked. My Opinion of Obama is that he won the nomination based on idenity politics, he has no experience, all of his past associates are either crimminals, black seperatists, white radicals or otherwise connected with the corrupt Chicago Political Crime family.

He is doing as well as he is doing because it's a shitty year for republicans, democrats thirst for power no matter what and he is running around the country promising free stuff to everyone except 5% of the population which he claims will pay for it. I have news for you, I am fortunately in and out of that 5% and have a bunch of friends who are as well. We don't plan on paying for it zEKE. There are several efforts underway to defer income, invest early in business upgrades and several other means to fight this class war that Obama has decided he wants to fight. You can't defer income forever but you can for a couple of years and that is enough time to throw Obama's plan into Kaos.

Biden is a DC mediocrity with a limitless penchant for gasbaggery and stupid gaffes.  In his two runs for president he couldn't even draw as much support as the nutty midget, Dennis Kucinich.  He's a nonentity.

Yeah, I used to live in St. Louis and East St. Louis is a hellhole that's a monument to the failure of Democratic party governance.  I doubt there's a Republican in the whole city and city officials still engage in rampant voter fraud in local elections.   Obama will probably get 130% of the vote in that town.

St. Louis itself is no paradise, but compared to East St. Louis it's the friggin' Garden of Eden.

Posted by: Randy R at October 19, 2008 10:53 PM (r+abb)

76 Here's the deal.

We drove from St. Louis to Columbia, MO Saturday.  120 miles each way.

In Saint Louis, there's a mix of yard signs, Obama dominating, but I guarantee that representation on that score is skewed.

Once outside the metro area, you will see nothing but McCain/Palin signs, hundreds of them along the way, lining the highway, on all these farms that supposedly are those traditional dirt-farmer Democrats.  Not a single Obama sign.

Then, in Columbia, a college town, Obama returns, a few McCain's, and we even passed a Constitution Party sign.

It's not surprising, really, but it was a stark and undeniable illustration of the stratification of how support is distributed.

And, guaranteed, a huge part of Barry's 100,000 in STL is from Illinois, and their vote doesn't matter because he will win his home state big with Chicago, anyway.

She likes to follow the way the wind is blowing....maybe she got enough emails that tore her a new asshole, in which case she will backtrack somewhat...

85 Andrew Breitbart is one. At Breitbart.com, he's launching a "Big Hollywood" blog with 40 industry conservatives tasked with -- among other things -- highlighting liberal intolerance.

"There's an undeniably vicious attitude against those who dissent," Breitbart said. "Hollywood is the most predictable place on the planet, not exclusively because of politics but because of narrow-mindedness."

Breitbart maintains that liberals have pushed conservatives too hard in Hollywood and that Americans have noticed. His intent is "to stop the bullying."

See this? I got it off Hollywood Reporter. And no, I'm not linking it because linking on aoshq is a pain in the ass.

87 Just got back from that rally in Roswell.  In an old aircraft hangar--at least half the crowd outside in the sun.  And it was hot.  I don't know how many people got hauled out by EMTs after passing out.  Hank Jr. opened up, and I can't say I ever thought I'd hear the words "Freddie Mac" put to the tune of "Country Boy Can Survive".  A lot of energy.  And a lot of people had to travel a ways to get there.  We live a couple hours away and there were people near us that drove over 200 miles to see her.  Again--a lot of energy!  Worth every second of the five hours we were packed in that hangar.

Hey guys and gals - I'm from Las Cruces.  Mesilla is right outside of the city limits of Las Cruces.  Biden held his rally in the plaza - I heard the crowd was pretty small - no surprise.

My family and I drove to Roswell today - 185 miles to see Sarah.  Yes, I can easily see 10K people there.  Waiting was the worst, but got to meet some really nice people. It was also nice to see the American flay flying and saying the Pledge of Allegience and singing the National Anthem - anyone remember those at the Obama campaign.  Oh, did I forget to mention ......we even opened in prayer!  GASP!!!!

I have also gotten to see McCain when he was here in Las Cruces.  Different setting tho - it was a townhall style and Sarah's was a rally.  Both were pretty neat and informative.  I liked that I could bring my daughter to see the future Pres and VP.  Lots of children at both and both crowds were very respectful.

I can tell you that Roswell is a strong Republican town - signs were everywhere.  Other interesting side note - people from Lubbock were also there, along with people from surrounding towns like Artesia, Ruidoso, Alamogordo, El Paso TX, Carlsbad.  Very cool!

92 Peggy is a fool, she thinks that somehow if she kisses Obama's ass she will accepted by the victors. Little does she know that she is despised (like Powell) by the left and they would not give her the time of day if Obama won. They will, however, be happy to tax the shit out of her.

Yeah, I used to live in St. Louis and East St. Louis is a hellhole that's a monument to the failure of Democratic party governance.

East St. Louis is a demilitarized zone.  I stepped off the yellow brick road one night on the way to the titty bar (PT's and the Diamond Cabaret were about the best joints going outside of Vegas), and had to change religions 16 times until I found a god that would deliver me back to the highway.  Thanks Kali!

There's something way not right about entire neighborhoods of people cavorting on their front lawns at 2:00 am with their pitbulls.  I'm sure my white Camry didn't stick out as I blew through every stop sign in my way out of hell.

St. Louis itself is no paradise, but compared to East St. Louis it's the friggin' Garden of Eden.

St. Louis isn't that bad, but the city planner was a retard.  He apparently thought it would be a slick social experiment to design the city like an economic chessboard, so that, no matter how comfortable and affluent your current establishment, a 24-hour 187-machine is only a few blocks away.  Awesome?

That chessboard design leads to not-infrequent conversations along the lines of "You woke up at some chick's place on Delmar?  Oh, not on Delmar?  North of Delmar?  North of Delmar!  Hang tight -- we'll be there before sunset.  Turn out the lights and curl yourself into a small target!"

>It's just a guess but I think Peggy will be telling us what a wonderful conservative Colin Powell is and what dumbasses the rest of us are for not seeing the racism brilliance in his endorsing Obama only the second black president in the history of this great country.

And she will go on a long anguished screed about how so much has gone wrong with America, because she was part of the Reagan revolution, don't you know, and thus doesn't like Palin, and now she has to suffer criticism for that, and this is just another scary example of the cheapening of the yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada .....

Yeah, when titty bars and riverboat casinos are the high points of your city's economic infrastructure, you've definitely taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way.  At some point you'd think they'd figure out that unfettered liberalism and one party Democratic rule hasn't really worked out for them.  And you'd be thinking wrong.
