Palin on SNL

Eh. I think they pretty much slammed her. Previously they've needled, say, Hillary, but then gave her props. I don't really see that here.

The rap during update is okay.

Stephanie provides the lyrics:

One, two, three
My name is Sarah Palin
You all know me
Vice President nominee of the G-O-P.
Gonna need ya vote
In the next election
Can I get a "What What" from the senior section?

McCain got experience,
McCain got style,
But don't let him freak you out
When he tries to smile.
'Cause that smile be creepy,
But when I'm V-P,
All the leaders in the world gonna finally meet me!

Howz it go Eskimos?
(Eskimos!)
Tel me, tell me what you know, Eskimos!
(Eskimos!)
How you feel Eskimos?
(Ice cold!)
Tell me, tell me what you feel Eskimos
(Supa' cold!)

I'm Jeremiah wright
'Cause tonight I'm the preacha
I got a bookish look and ya all hot fo' teacha
Todd lookin' fine on his snow machine,
So hot for each other need a go-between.

In Wasilla we just chill, baby chilla,
But when I see oil it's "Drill, baby, drilla!"

My country 'tis of thee,
From my porch I can see,
Russia and such

All the mavericks in the house put ya hands up!
All the mavericks in the house put ya hands up!

All the plumbers in the house pull ya pants up!
All the plumbers in the house pull ya pants up!

When I say Obama you say Ayers
Obama!
(Ayers!)
Obama!
(Ayers!)
I built me a bridge it ain't going nowhere!
Ohhhhhhhhhh!

McCain/Palin gonna put the nail in
The coffin, of the media elite
(She likes red meat!)
Shoot a motherhumpin' moose eight days of the week!

[gunshots]

Now ya dead!
Now ya dead 'cause I'm an animal!
And I'm bigga than you!

'Hold of a shot gun, walk in the pub
Everybody party, we're goin' on a hunt

La-la-la-la
la-la
la-laaaaaa

[gunshots]

Yo, I'm Palin, I'm out!

1 I thought tina fey was hideous looking, not as beautiful as Sarah.

4 Actually, I think it may've been good for her. It showed a contrast between the SNL portrayal of her (and the media's) and the actual Sarah Palin.

Posted by: Benson at October 19, 2008 03:40 AM (qzcNU)

5 Sarah Palin's telegenic beauty and presence made Tina Fey's cartoon caricature look pretty weak by comparison and she came off as a good sport.  This was a win for Palin.

6 Tomorrow's Allah post today, Ace? I was expecting a hatchetjob and thought she came out looking really good.

7 Come on - the rap was pretty funny...... compared to anything else SNL has put out for quite some time.

When I say Obama, you say Ayers?

That GOLD!

The crowd loved her, from when they first showed her backstage, to when she appeared at the podium, to showing up for update, to the Todd impersonation, to her shiznit moves.  They. Loved. Her.

It was a positive.

Posted by: Editor at October 19, 2008 03:46 AM (p4YSL)

8 She came off classy - a good sport with a sense of humor.  I just hope she burns that suit after letting Alec Baldwin touch her.

11 How far off has the GOP become that we have to defend such a idiot as Palin. We knew to take the White House would be damn near impossible but we gave it to the Dems by going with McCain/Palin. What the hell went wrong? Who the fuck voted for McCain? I mean really?
It's all just so very concerning. Can you feel my concern? I'm going to have a prayer now. You know because I'm so Christian and conservative and concerned.

19 Just saw a link to a DUmmie thread over at Hot Air. The retards on DU think that Palin actually refused to do the rap at the last minute.

I guess if they were good at distinguishing between acting and reality they wouldn't be Obama voters, huh?

20

yeah ace - seriously, why the downer? they were going to slam her whether she was there or not. by showing up, she shows she can be a good sport and be above it all.

i don't think this was "just ok," I think this was a huge plus. We're all in the bubble a little too much, but don't forget that 86% of the electorate is uninformed. tons of people will vote obama just because of his "coolness" - plain peels some off tonight. and mccain helped himself out with the letterman appearance and comedy skit the other night.

how about the next couple palin rallies with chants of "you say obama - I say ayers!"

i trust your instincts generally - but the rap included references to jeremiah wright and ayers both. the opening bit had baldwin and fey retreating in fear. it was hardly a hit job.

i'm really bummed to see semi-negative comments - as others will come here in the morning and think the whole thing was a disaster, when it was the opposite.

Posted by: ja at October 19, 2008 03:57 AM (iVJ0d)

21 Most people will see the first clip as the usual SNL parody and that will deflate any more over the top media portrayals of her.  That meme is busted.  Definitely a plus.

The second shows a pretty hip mom next door, who gets today's younger culture and probably has the house in the neighborhood where all the kids are hanging out.  The kids don't hang out at a house that has a scary bitch for a mom so that will undermine that "she's evil and scary" meme with the 20 something crowd.

And she definitely shows more rhythm and hip-ness that the O!'s appearance on Ellen.  He looked down right Erkelish and inauthentic.

So it has busted two memes and makes her look even more authentic than the One.  All in all, a good outcome IMHO.

Posted by: bmeuppls at October 19, 2008 03:58 AM (lNXkY)

22 The best thing I can say is that the audience seemed to really like her, and that was nice to hear (the cheers and applause).

The thing that keeps bugging me, though, is that Tina Fey's impersonation is so obviously off the mark, and it becomes more apparent every time she trots it out there.  The first skit (when she and Hillary did the PSA together) was funny, mainly because it focused on contrasting Sarah with Hillary, but ever since then it's nothing but Fey insisting that Palin is nothing but an imbecilic beauty queen.  Since that is so clearly not true, the skits don't have that element of truth that they'd need to be really funny.

It's a one-trick pony impersonation, and it's now well-past its expiration date.

Posted by: Kensington at October 19, 2008 03:58 AM (xFNQx)

23 I have respect for her.  It shows she is not intimidated by these people, and in her presence makes their caricature shallow and dare I say ugly.  She will face anything--for good or for bad--and liberals hate that about it.

37 Just saw this over at the Puffington Host....

O is trying to confuse the voters on who Joe the Plumber is.  He has his own JtP (some guy in Co) and is putting out robocalls....

Barack Obama's campaign is trotting out its own "Joe the Plumber" to counteract efforts by John McCain to make inroads on the white working class vote.

A reader in Colorado sends over word that the state Democratic Party and the Obama camp are blasting out robocalls from "Joe Martinez," a plumber in Colorado who vouches for the Illinois Democrat's tax plan.

A spokesman for the Colorado Democratic Party confirmed the robocall and said he would try to track down audio. The rough script goes like this:

"...During this week's debate, Barack Obama talked about cutting taxes for middle class families like mine, lowering health care costs for everyone and bringing the change we need in Washington. John McCain ignored the issues and used the debate to launch false attacks against Barack Obama. In fact, McCain - for the third debate in a row - didn't even say the words 'middle class'. So, take it from Joe the plumber, if you want a president who will put middle class families first - join me in voting for Barack Obama. Paid for by the Colorado Democratic Party...."So now, they're trying to corrupt the message about Joe the Plumber and pretend he really is for Obama's tax plan... pitiful.

38 @dead career sketch: so totally! and that sketch was pretty funny! and yeah, the audience cheer was pretty respectable in its intensity.

the first sketch was kinda stupid, but I did notice this: tina fey had palin pegged the first time 110%, the second, maybe 90%, but this time she just wasn't on her game. could it be anything to do with the real mccoy watching? just thinkin' out loud.

Ayers is not a lost cause, it's the whole reason Obama is worth a fuck.  Not Ayers, actually.  Dohrn.

When Annenberg was coming up with his $500 mil challenge, he talked to Newton Minow, senior counsel of Sidley & Austin, chairman of the Carnegie Corporation (1993–1997), Annenberg Professor of Communications Law and Policy at Northwestern University (1987–2003) and director of its Annenberg Washington Program (1987–1996).

Who was interning for Sidley & Austin?  Why Barack Obama, of course.  You know who were regular employees? One Michelle Robinson (Obama) and one Bernadine Dohrn.  It just so happens that the authors of the winning grant proposal for the Chicago Annenberg Grant were: William Ayers, Anner Hallet, and Warren Chapman.

Does anyone else find it a little shady that members of the law firm consulted by Annenberg just happened to have spouses that wrote winning grant proposals? And that one of the final board members was Susan Blankenbaker Noyes, former labor attorney at Sidley & Austin; daughter of Republican former Indiana state senator Virginia Murphy Blankenbaker; goddaughter of Patricia Albjerg Graham?  Patricia Albjerg Graham just happened to be the woman who agreed to be the vice chairman if Barack Obama accepted the chairmanship.

Obama is corrected more closely with Dohrn, which is why the Ayers thing is not quite panning out as it should.  True, they are married, but Dohrn was far more radical than Ayers.  The SDS birthed two movements - the Revolutionary Youth Movement 2 (Klonsky) and the Revolutionary Youth Movement 1 (Ayers, Dohrn, and the other Weathermen).  Dohrn is FAR more radical than her beta male counterpart Ayers.

Bernadine Dohrn said, "Dig it! First they killed those pigs and then they put a fork in their bellies. Wild!" concerning the Tate-Bianca murders.  Go read her Wiki article.  She's the real link into Barack Obama.

80 Re Tina Fey. I have no reason to doubt she dislikes Palin as much as she seems to-- going by her impersonation & recent over-the-top statements about her.

But I wouldn't be surprised if there's perhaps a tiny element of protesting-too-much, in order to preserve her good NY Democrat bona fides.

In an episode of 30 Rock (of which I'm a big fan), sometime last year (long before either Obama or McCain were certain or even likely to be the candidates), Fey's character (Liz Lemon) rattles off a list of the most shameful secret things about herself-- including the fact that (paraphrased) "I'll probably tell everyone I'm voting for Obama & really vote for McCain." That always stuck in my mind (kinda shocking to hear that confessed-- & I could relate, given my own milieu)... and since they *in fact* became the candidates, I've occasionally wondered how Fey feels, in retrospect, about that confession from her character (which has always been at least a little bit of a self-portrait). "Voting for McCain" of course has a very different valence today (given the current political climate, in the middle of bloody campaign warfare) than it did last year-- and especially since Palin came on the scene. (By the way, I got the feeling-- given remarks made on SNL during the primaries-- that Fey was a Hilary supporter.)

It would be *extremely* interesting if that confession was still true of Fey-qua-Lemon-- in which case, she *has* to protest too much (e.g. hating Palin) to cover for that accidentally expressed truth (accidental, because at the time I don't think anyone really believed Obama vs. McCain would be the match-up). Probably more likely that it's no longer true, if it ever was true of Fey herself-- in which case, she still has to protest too much (going out of her way to publicly express her contempt/hate of Palin), to distance herself from Liz Lemon's remark. (After all, that episode will be on DVD for the rest of time...)

Anyway, anyone who writes a character like Jack Donaghy (most hilarious & lovable capitalist Republican character on TV, maybe ever) is not your typical Republican-hating lefty. (Played so well by Alec Baldwin-- heh, maybe some of his character has rubbed off on him?) I like Tina Fey. If she's acquired PDS for real, that would be too bad.

How about a hit conservative movie -- almost every big hit Judd Apatow has had.

Yeah, yeah, there's cussing.  Get over it.  Those were conservative movies with a Gen-X veneer.

From Ayers, "Where does the military recruit? They don’t recruit in New Trier [upper middle class school in the Chicago suburbs]. They don’t recruit at Andover and Exeter [elite private schools]. They’re not allowed in there. They recruit in DuSable high school and Lawndale high school [mainly Black and poor schools in Chicago]. And that’s unfair".

My parents, a Democratic PCO and a school teacher, both hard Ds, made 100k+ while I was growing up.  Both me and my little brother put on the cloth of this nation as US Marines (Me 98-03, my bro 07-pres).  FUCK YOU AYERS.  Maybe back when Biden got those 5 differments that shit was true, but no more.  I've had friends who didn't come home you son of a bitch.  People who I grabbed Lts to preside over promotion ceremonies, who I lived with in the barracks; who I got drunk with and carried home and got carried home by.

FUCK YOU YOU PIECE OF SHIT AND ALL THE FUCKING PIECE OF SHITS LIKE YOU.  My wife is from a former soviet republic who still live under a kleptocracy.  America is the freest and greatest nation in the world.  If you hate it so much, move to Cuba fuckers.

102 Of course they slammed her, Ace, it's what they do.  The rap was pretty funny (esp. that "When I say Obama you say Ayers" bit), but the best part was Palin in the hallway with Baldwin and Michaels.  I took that as Baldwin and Co. making fun of their own obvious biases.

If anybody changed their mind over this appearance, it was in Palin's favor.

Also McCain does comedy better than Alec Baldwin. Was Baldwin obviously reading his lines off of a teleprompter or what?

109 Couple of points that others have touched on:

The first sketch was definitely a win.  The more I've thought about it since last night, the more I realize how much it undercut the parodies they've been doing of her.  By having Mark Wahlberg there taking issue with the portrayal they've done of him, it emphasizes that SNL makes fun of everyone, and that it doesn't necessarily mean there is something genuinely wrong with that person, they're just having fun with them because it's what they do.  Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin pretending to turn tail and run/suck up when she shows up also gives the impression that she is legit and they are just clowns.  Baldwin's big joke (I got a good laugh out of it) about her being so much hotter in person was funny and true, I watched it in HD and she looked a LOT better than Fey, who's impression of her is getting real tired at this point.

She also gets points for going into the lion's den, and people who aren't dead set against her should respect her for that.  Not sure what I think about the rap.  "Funny" raps were lame when they started 20 years ago with "Rappin' Rodney" Dangerfield, and haven't improved with age.  At least she didn't sing it herself.

110 "Can anyone here name a hit conservative TV comedy show?"

Um, South Park? Comedy Central's flagship show?

Posted by: DoDoGuRu at October 19, 2008 08:15 AM (xBkZj)

111 #80: There was also the 30 Rock episode where they spent a lot of time calling Obama "Osama" and talking up Hillary.  Fey was definitely a Hillary gal at that point, the question is if she went PUMA.

As for the SNL appearances, she was clearly hotter and better than Fey's impression of her, and that's IMO all that was necessary.  Pretty much nobody of voting age has watched SNL regularly in at least a decade.  So let's not assign it too much importance.

112 "After watching Saturday Night Live make fun of her from afar, Sarah Palin witnessed it first hand this week as Tina Fey engaged in fiction by depicting her at the news conference the Republican vice presidential nominee has yet to hold." --GLEN JOHNSON

AFTER WATCHING FROM AFAR, SHE WITNESSED IT FIRST HAND.

"Watched from afar" is a ludicrous way of saying saw it on TV.

And it is first hand when you see yourself being ridiculed whether at home from the boob tube or on the set in person.

Sarah Palin ain't gonna crumble or wilt for anyone under any circumstance. Palin's got guts. No surprise.

Obama ain't got guts and would crumble under the gun as he always does.

SNL ain't got guts since they won't dish it out to Obama.

Let's put Peggy Noonan on SNL with the same degree of animosity shoved down Peggy's throat. Noonan's the one claiming superiority over Palin. Put up or shut up, Peggy. Noonan has neither intestinal fortitude nor integrity.

115

Saw it at NBC.com. She was the royalty and they were the commoners, and everyone on the set knew it. The subhuman sliming makes more sense now--some very desperate and very maladjusted people needed to bring real talent down to their level to dissipate the fear and their own sense of inadequacy, just when it seemed they would find self-justification in Senator Tabula Rasa.

Looked at Barnes's interview with her on the Weekly Standard website, and it is worth reading. She's not sure about a national career if the ticket loses. She says that she had to run against the GOP in Alaska, and isn't convinced that the national GOP big boys would be committed to her type of reforms.

She also said she's got other stuff she "would and could do". You might think this odd, but from that interview I got the vibe that after this campaign, she now knows she's ABOVE the crap that a national political career involves.

I know some people are going to misunderstand that, but review over your lifetime the parade of people who are--let's face it--losers on several serious levels and who ran for president, some of whom won, and I think you'll get it.

She's not like that, and that's why so many people like her. And hate her, to get away from hating themselves.

Yeah, and let's do that by declaring everything lost and giving up while there's two weeks to go in the election and a number of polls show McCain only down by 2-4 points, plus let's bash a rising star in the Republican Party who's actually put these things into practice, in addition to b----ing that McCain didn't pick a guy like Romney (which would have been suicide given the current financial mess).

That's the ticket to Party unity and rising back to power!

If you're a Democrat.

Which you are.

Walter Annenburg spread $500 million to over 18 cities to improve education... ever think that he didn't serve on the board of all of them or any? Oh wait because because his name is on the communication schools at U Penn and USC he must associated with every person of questionable character who ever attended, graduated, or worked there?

129 My take:

1) Sarah is much cuter than Tina made up to look like Sarah.

2) Sarah was in enemy territory and everyone knew it. Alec Baldwin didn't even look at her when he read lines addressed to her. Putz.

3) The opening skit was predictable to the max, but it had Sarah in it.

4) The rap number was amusing, Sarah read her lines well to intro it and looked like she belonged at the desk. She was having fun in the b/g.

5) Watching the rest of the show I realized why I haven't tuned into SNL for the last 30 years. Fer crying out loud, Monty Python did at least one of the same skits over 40 years ago--and did a better job at it.

130 Ace, get a grip; more than a grip!  I missed the opening of the show, only saw Weekend Update which was great, assumed the former was a negative, and thus the assumed it was a wash.  But having just watched the video of the opening, WOW, that was funny, positive, I would say almost GREAT.  It was classic SNL.

I really think this may help her amongst some swing voters (assuming there are any left).  It humanized her; made her look like something other than the extremist freak liberals think she is.  HOW COULD YOU NOT THINK THIS IS A POSITIVE?

Totally agree Baldwin is a putz but my take was he just sucks at reading his lines from a teleprompter. I bet Baldwin has hired a pr firm to soften his image. He was trying to appear as a good sport. He has been pushing his book and doing the girly interview circuit.

Posted by: long island at October 19, 2008 11:27 AM (XHzEP)

What we learned from the opening bit is that Alec Baldwin is as dependent on his teleprompter as Obama.

I only saw the opening sketch, but I think Sarah did fine.

If she hadn't gone on the show, the left would have called her a coward.  But, she did go on, and she showed those bastards that she's not scared of them, or their stupid mockery.

I think John McCain should have told Letterman to f*** off after all of the crap he said about McCain cancelling his appearance, but he went on, he was engaging and he delivered Letterman his biggest audience since 2005.

Personally, I don't think Presidential candidates should do ANY of those stupid shows.  I don't think they should go on with those bitter "View" whores, or go on SNL or any of the other "comedic" late night shows.  I think it's kind degrading.

But, since they all do it now anyway, I am glad to see that McCain and Palin went right into the belly of the beast and hit their respective pitches out of the park.

Cowardly Obama wouldn't even go on FOX for a legitimate interview until he went on O'Reilly.  And he only did it then to try to undermine McCain on the night of his acceptance speech.

And, since it didn't go so well for him, he continues to whine about how he'd be 3 points higher in the polls if it wasn't for FOX.  You don't hear McCain and Palin whining about how the deck is stacked against them, even though there is a constant barrage from not only the legitimate news outlets, but from these low-rent "entertainment" shows as well.

I think Independent voters notice that kind of stuff, and I think our side may have won a few converts this week.

139 I've watched both sketches several times now - think they were both great. The "angel's voice whispering in your ear" was a great subtle slam on Obama. The rap was hilarious - "Obama! Ayers! Obama! Ayers!" is viral material and you will hear more of it.

And I adored Sarah's growled "you betcha!" Fuck, yeah - we've got this thing. Sarah needs to do Leno, Conan, or Kimmel. She's awesome at this stuff.

140 As a connoisseur of teh rhythm, I was quite impressed by our Alaskan Veep-to-be's ability to move according to the beat, especially since I was at a mostly white wedding yesterday and had the opportunity to assess the (non-)dancing ability ofm most of the folks there.  (No offense, morons.)  This has sealed the deal for me, and I am definitely voting McCain-Palin now, as soon as I can find a willing ACORN operative to register me.

144 I don't get why people are saying this was bad. If they wanted to keep pummeling her, they wouldn't have her on.

Plus, they let her say "Live from New York, It's Saturday Night" as well as close out Weekend Update by saying "I'm Sarah Palin. Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow."

For anyone who watches SNL regularly, that's huge!

This showed Sarah Palin can be a good sport while comedians do what they do. It was awesome!

145 Its not a donkey or an alpaca but a llama named Trooper. I actually meet the llama. So I touched a llama that touched Sarah Palin. She meet him before the skit and they liked each other.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE SARAH!  ALL of you haters are jealous, don't hate!  it was one of the funniest skits of all time, and I don't understand why anyone would think she had planned to do it and then declined - she was campaigning and had no time to practice and it's not her style!!!  it was meant to be amy, who is so funny

LOVE YOU SARAH!
