A Guy From the Neighborhood, Whose Book I Gave a Glowing Blurb To

Review at Zombie. And it wasn't really a review...

Turns out the review was very short — what I had thought (from reading the citations in the onlines articles) were just short quotations from it was in fact the entirety of the review. But it was accompanied by a photo of Obama, standing by his statement. The review was part of a column called “Mark My Word,” in which Chicago notables praise their favorite current books.

More: Well, obviously, he was a guy in the neighborhood. Bill Ayers' book, mentioning what a great neighborhood it was, noted that Louis Farrakahn lived there... and of course Barack Obama.

11 I have a whole gaggle of books from the library I am trying to read on the Weatherman et al

I'm reading John Castellucci's 1986

"The Big Dance - The untold story of Kathy Boudin and the terrorist family that committed the Brink's robbery murders"

The account of the robbery, murders and aftermath is terrifying.

And Boudin almost got away but some dude (appears to be an off duty or retired cop who happened to be driving into the aftermath) chased her ass down not knowing if she was a victim or apart of the crime...and you know what the brave struggle warrior in solidarity with the black man did? She gave them up - "I didn't shoot anyone, they did"

Nevertheless, I'm jotting down interesting points.

Now about this plumber guy, he's bald so his basically a skinhead right?  I think we're going to pursue the neo-Nazi aspect of Joe the Plumber for awhile. If we have time before the election we might look into this. And when we say 'election' we mean Barack's reelection campaign in 2012.

I'm all for elimination of jails/prisons...and replacing them with public stocks, pillory, or gallows for the hardcases.

I truly believe a week or so in the stocks in a public square being pelted with rotten fruit by the public would be far more rehabilitative than years/decades in the slam.

Probably nothing to worry about when we should be focusing on any foreign travel that Joe the Plumber may have done.

Close-up on juvenile justice
Nov. 6, 1997

Author, former offender among speakers

By Jennifer Vanasco
News Office

Children who kill are called “super predators,” “people with no conscience,” “feral pre-social beings” — and “adults.”

William Ayers, author of A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court (Beacon Press, 1997), says “We should call a child a child. A 13-year-old who picks up a gun isn’t suddenly an adult. We have to ask other questions: How did he get the gun? Where did it come from?”

Ayers, who spent a year observing the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago, is one of four panelists who will speak on juvenile justice at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the C-Shop. The panel, which marks the 100th anniversary of the juvenile justice system in the United States, is part of the Community Service Center’s monthly discussion series on issues affecting the city of Chicago. The event is free and open to the public.

Ayers will be joined by Sen. Barack Obama, Senior Lecturer in the Law School, who is working to combat legislation that would put more juvenile offenders into the adult system…

Michelle Obama, Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center, hopes bringing issues like this to campus will open a dialogue between members of the University community and the broader community.

“Students and faculty explore these issues in the classroom, but it is an internal conversation,” Obama said. “We know that issues like juvenile justice impact the city of Chicago, this nation and — directly or indirectly — this campus. This panel gives students a chance to hear about the juvenile justice system not only on a theoretical level, but from the people who have experienced it.”

By the way, note that Mr. Ayers is not listed as a “former offender.”

65 You have to really think about what was done here.  The Chicago Tribune asks these local "celebrities" to say what they "are reading".  You must understand, it has nothing to do with what they are reading, it has to do with which book they want to promote.

The question as to why Barry would have chosen Ayers' book to read is interesting, but he picked Ayers' book to promote.  He could have picked a popular novel, an inoffensive dull biography of a great American, a book by one of his law school buddies or UChicago colleagues or, well, anybody.

But he picked (and praised) Ayers' book which, aside from who wrote it, is radical in and of itself.
