NYT Reporter Jodi Kantor Trolls Schoolchildren on Facebook to Dig Dirt on Cindy McCain

Report Message

I saw on facebook that you went to Xavier, and if you don't mind, I'd love to ask you some advice about a story. I'm a reporter at the New York Times, writing a profile of Cindy McCain, and we are trying to get a sense of what she is like as a mother. So I'm reaching out to fellow parents at her kids' schools. My understanding is that some of her older kids went to Brophy/Xavier, but I'm trying to figure out what school her 16 year old daughter Bridget attends-- and a few people said it was PCDS. Do you know if that's right? Again, we're not really reporting on the kids, just seeking some fellow parents who can talk about what Mrs. McCain is like.

Also, if you know anyone else who I should talk to-- basically anyone who has encountered Mrs. McCain and might be able to share impressions-- that would be great.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Meanwhile, not a single reporter has bothered asking anyone -- like, adults -- about the open secret that Bill Ayers babysat for Obama's kids.

So why doesn't McCain make an issue of this?

Oh, mercy, they are.

In a letter to the NYT, a McCain staffer notes "You have not tried to find Barack Obama's drug dealer."

It is worth noting that you have not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama. You have not tried to find Barack Obama’s drug dealer that he wrote about in his book, Dreams of My Father. Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them. Thus, there is a terrific lack of balance here.

I suggest to you that none of these subjects on either side are worthy of the energy and resources of The New York Times. They are cruel hit pieces designed to injure people that only the worst rag would investigate and publish. I know you and your colleagues are always preaching about raising the level of civil discourse in our political campaigns. I think taking some your own medicine is in order here.

The hell with his drug dealer. I want to know his babysitter was.

Or, actually, I already know.

I'd like to know why the NYT doesn't want to know.

Strike that -- I know the answer to that one, too.

Incidentally, why would the NYT attempt to reignite its discredited Vicky Isemann affair rumor now?

Gee, it's almost as if they know something might be on the horizon involving Obama.

1 Is there any reason you cannot get Drudge to run the story on Ayers as Obama's babysitter?

Posted by: John Schulte at October 18, 2008 02:18 PM (seg86)

2 Vet the vetters Ace. How would Jodi like if someone trolled her daughters friends to see what kind of parent she is. What drug habits the reporters at NYT's have, tax problems and sex scandals etc.

3 Isn't Jodi's trolling children on facebook on par of Marc Foley IMing young pages? Just asking questions.

4 Yes - if I was in a position to do it I would immediately make an example of Jodi Kantor. Start trolling for dirt on her, her family and her dirty little secrets. Get it out as soon as it's vetted and pound the shit out of it!

I am trying.

6 I heard that William Ayers and his terrorist wife Bernard Dohrn babysat Michelle's children.  I guess they have a really big kitchen table, or something.

7 Thank you Ace finally someone says it. Bill Ayers babysat for Obama childern. Gee no way is it true? hmm thought he didn't know him. As far as the rendezvous at the George Hotel, something in common with Sen. Edwards. Looks like the msm knew all along, I mean if you went after Edwards wouldn't you have to do the same for Obama. Oh oh that's right they didn't go after Edwards instead they pick on Trig or Joe. Such credibility.
GO Ace no else is willing to report the truth.

13 Realizing that wikipedia is many times unreliable, her entry says she's Columbia undergrad, attended Harvard law and was brought to the NYT by Howell Raines after corresponding with Frank Rich about how to make the arts coverage better. I'm sure her piece on Cindy would have been evenhanded.

"Ace - No one gives a crap for the made up rumors. Obama spoke at the Alfred E Smith dinner about the Fox News expose of him having "fathered two black kids in wedlock". "

WTF does this have to do with anything?

"On the ground this morning, Governor Pallin drew a crowd of 20,000 and led them in a call and response on the "Joe The Plumber" chant.... "

Crowd estimates ranged much higher than that, but we'll go with your 20,000 just for fuck's sake.  Your next line?

"while Senator Obama went for stroll down the street in St. Louis in search of a double latte, skinny with nutmeg sprinkles, and drew a crowd in excess of 100,000."

I can haz linkz?  Pics or it didn't happen.

"It kinda looks lke Yes, he/they/we can versus No he/they/you can't. "

No, it kinda looks like socialist cult of personality versus normal, everyday Americans.

"But the county's economic fundamentals are strong and everything's good for McCain so it's most likely not a problem."

See: Barack Obama's statements concerning our long term prospects.  Or John McCain's.  Or damn near any economist. PLEASE STFU KTHXBYE

ETHICS YOU CAN BELIEVE IN!

Posted by: flashoverride at October 18, 2008 02:42 PM (W/3TD)

21 My theory on the coke deal is that "there is no dealer".  Seriously - I think this is why there is no report.

I think that part is made up by Bill Ayers in the book.  That's why we don't hear much about it.

Posted by: Editor at October 18, 2008 02:42 PM (p4YSL)

22 Additionally, I think that's why the McCain campaign is bringing it up.  It's a sly way to get the ball rolling towards finding "the dealer" and figuring out that there is no dealer because Barry didn't do blow.  It's made up for the book and it would point back to the book being ghostwritten.

24 The McCain camp has responded on this:

http://tinyurl.com/697f3d

"In order to assemble this barrage of petty and personal attacks, the New York Times employed tactics that are obviously unprofessional and almost certainly unethical. This campaign has obtained a copy of an email sent by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor to a 16-year-old girl and friend of Bridget McCain, the youngest of the McCain children. Ms. Kantor sought to dupe the unsuspecting minor by soliciting โ€˜advice' on how best to approach the story, as if a top-flight investigative reporter at the New York Times would need the assistance of an underage girl in writing a hit piece."

Posted by: SH at October 18, 2008 02:52 PM (arAyy)

25 I think that part is made up by Bill Ayers in the book.  That's why we don't hear much about it.

If Ayers wrote the book, and he may have, and part of the aim was to help Obama rise to prominence, why would he include the drug story if it was bogus. It may have happened but what's your theory on why?

Posted by: BrianBoru at October 18, 2008 02:52 PM (IR2EX)

26 "It is worth noting that you have not employed your investigative assets looking into Michelle Obama. You have not tried to find Barack Obama’s drug dealer...Nor have you interviewed his poor relatives in Kenya and determined why Barack Obama has not rescued them.

30 This strikes me as a perfect example of the type of BS discussed on the Watchmen thread yesterday. I know the media wants to get a story, any story; but there are so many stories going unreported in this election (e.g., what the economic plans of 'spreading the wealth around' will do to small business, which Jodi's husband might be able to write with some degree of consciousness).

Trolling 16-year-olds with little more discretion than an old man in a trenchcoat in a quest for that extra bit of dirt that'll turn an undecided voter to The One is not one of them.

Why do I get the feeling that the next two weeks are about to get very interesting? I had been wondering about all of this when this was posted at RedState about 10 days ago:

http://tiny.cc/LMYh5

And there's been absolutely no follow up from Erick so maybe it was posted to give us all hope that the RNC had the goods on Obama. I sure hope so. I just can't believe they would go down without a fight.

But it seems like we're running a little short on time. Obama ads still vastly outnumber McCain ads here in Richmond so they RNC had better start getting into that $160M ad warchest they mentioned a week or so ago before it's too late.

Why did they employ a 27 year old with little experience in the first place ? 35 The Times misses nothing

It's easy not to 'miss' something when you never start an investigation in the first place.

Obama's college days? His grades? Any coverage of unpleasant statements about how he relates to his fellow Americans which 'he' made in his books? Not substantial enough? OK, how about a dispassionate review of his voting record? His performance/ achievements as a community organizer?

The Times has people in Alaska right now giving a rectal exam to Sarah Palin's former hairdresser, but they won't give us rather basic, customarily-furnished information about this guy that would put some flesh on him for us. Wonder why.

Oh, and you're an asshole.

41 Is anybody interested in that boycott idea yet?  62 million people voted for Bush.  If only 30 million people are sick of the press, a boycott effort used in a effective manner could be crushing.

A boycott would need to be focused, transparently not linked to a political party, and actually apologetic to the advertisers targeted.

I picture the following: target a single media organization at a time.  Start with their largest advertising revenue and work down the list.  In the case some big conglomerate like P&G, pick just one of their branded items at a time.  Notify the affected advertiser about the boycott.  Make some demands about the targeted media and let them know that additional brands and media outlets will be targeted in the future.  Let them know what the complaint is, and how forgiving the boycott participants will be if the advertiser stops subsidizing the objectionable behavior.  Behave reasonably.  Apologize to the advertiser.  Make it clear that the only goal is to starve that media perpetrator of advertising dollars until they are gone or permanently change their behavior.  Offer ideas where advertising could be redirected without being subject to boycott.

Organizing the boycott can't be that hard in the days of internet and email chains.  Or, we could just keep reading bloggers bitching about degenerates like the scum at the NYT that target families for hit pieces so a marxist can skate by without exposure.  It is our choice.

Posted by: Jawbone at October 18, 2008 03:54 PM (r/OHH)

45 How about this instead of a boycott:

Get a contact list of willing participants.

Then, when something like this truly disgusting Kantor piece comes out, an organizer in the group sends out the quotes and other slimy pieces to people on the list

...along with contact information on contemporary advertisers at the NY Times:

...and the participants bombard them with complaint emails and letters of protest and phone calls and whatnot.

At the same time, promote the effort around the blogs.

I think this will put more pressure than a boycott and would required short-term focused energy rather than the long-term energy of a boycott.

An effort like this got the show Soap taken off the air long ago.

Posted by: Michelle's American White Racist at October 18, 2008 04:25 PM (NLtVk)

52 Usinkorea, let me offer some thoughts for your consideration --

I am interested in a permanent change in media behavior.  I see it this way -- every right entails a responsibility.  2nd amendment rights demand a responsibility to handle your arms safely.   1st amendment rights demand some responsibilities, too.  I think it time that those folks EMPLOYED in the exercise of our 1st amendment rights regain their understanding of that concept and permanently.

I do not support a barrage of outrage about a particular show/article/etc., for a few reasons, including:

1.  readership and viewership is already declining.  Controversy can be used to bolster either one.  We should deny them any benefits from our complaints.

2. we should never feed their egos.  They are just as happy to be hated as loved as long as they are noticed.  One element of the boycott is that we could plainly state that only one person at a time is assigned to accumulate advertising information.  No other readership/viewership reward would be offered.  We should deny them that, too.  Irrelevance is the greatest hell to these ego-driven people.

3.  The media already far more interested in your glands than your brain.  They are thrilled when they can make anyone angry/horny/indignant.  Ever notice how much sex the media spews during ratings week?  I choose to deny them my emotions as well.  I believe determination is the only thing we should show them -- never emotion, because they see that as a win.  It must become clear to those that will finally decide how to react to those of us that have finally had enough that they are facing an army of people armed with dogged -- I will see you in your economic grave -- determination.  We must deny them any emotion other than that sadness we all feel when we are forced to do an unpleasant job because it must be done.

There is a side point to the emotion issue as well.  Because the media has become a gland-activation vehicle, they have given up their responsibility to convey any real information.  We are a poorer society because of it.  One real benefit to attacking that aspect is we may actually start to get a little smarter for a change.

55 #52

I might not be following the implications of your program - of a program what you wrote might point to, but...

...a boycott would probably stoke the big media personality's ego as much as an emotional outburst, because you cannot energize a boycott without emotion.

I am not saying you have to stoke wild emotion to get one to work.  I am saying that the kind of commitment a boycott would take by the individual participating and those promoting it would carry with it much emotion and without that emotion the campaign would fizzle.

Anyway, what I have in mind on this project would be not to target the individual media ego.  It is to target the organization - thru the disgusting manner in which too many in the organization are behaving.

--Because the media is terribly important in a democracy - and our democracy is being harmed a good bit.

And the way to go after the organization is to go at the advertisers.

We can look how Matthews and Olbermann were yanked from the conventions:  it wasn't the executives at MSNBC.  As I understand it, it was the thousands of middle men (middle men to MSNBC central getting its money) who became disgusted (and worried) enough to put pressure on the main corporate types who then forced the controllers of the show to pull the plug.

For what I have in mind, we can also look at how the late-70s (early 80s?) show Soap was removed from the air.

That was not, as I remember it, some great show of emotion and fanatical hatred.

It was done by (religious) people who were offended by the show organizing (with established religious orgs) + then putting pressure on the show and networks advertisers + by letting them know exactly why they were angry at the product and what they were going to do about it.

Now, I did not and do not particularly agree with the Soap example itself.  That was a sitcom - not the fourth estate.

The media is the fourth estate.  It is vital to our democracy.  And it has grown so corrupt, it is hurting our present and future.

Action needs to be taken.

And I think The Soap Model might be ONE good way to go about it -- and something we internet dwellers could accomplish - without requiring start-up funds.

Call it --- internet community organizing.

What we need is numbers (participants) and a little directing from time to time.

56 You guy--I think you're missing the entire point here.

We've got what, less than three weeks until the election, and they're just now coming after Cindy McCain?  What good is that gonna do?  None at all.  A hit piece on her isn't going to change anyone's minds.

But if they can tar-and-feather the 'First Lady Elect', I think they'd jump on the chance.  I'm guessing that they now know they're gonna lose, so this is the first salvo in Plan B:  Smear the McCains at every opportunity and do all they can to discredit them, and start as soon as possible.

Posted by: Frank G at October 18, 2008 07:26 PM (P0rQD)

68 McCain won't do the following to help "Joe the Plumber," but this is what he should do to provide support to Joe and what I'd do if I were targeted by the MSM.

Research my MSM attackers. If assets are available, I'd hire a PI to do some extra digging. Build a dossier on the hack outside my door wanting an interview. Have another on her employer/editor. In other words, be prepared before facing my enemy.

Next, I'd walk up to the one who targeted me and who will be my target right back. Turn the table. While he prepares his barrage as inquisitioner, I'd have a helper with a camera film the encounter. I'd then proceed to say, "Look, you've vetted me, so now I'm vetting you. I don't know if you're qualified to make judgments or capable of preparing justifiable inquiries and I'd like you to answer some questions. I understand you have donated X amount of dollars to the DNC? Is that correct? I understand that you were fired from Company Y for offense Z? How long did it take you to find new employment and did you disclose to your employer your crime before hire? I note here that you had an ugly divorce and that your spouse divorced you because you cheated on him multiple times? Are you emotionally stable enough to perform your duty with such distractions?"

The point is to make them just as uncomfortable as they have made me. If they are going to destroy my reputation, I'm going to destroy theirs. And I'll work on his boss' too. No need to keep the public disinformed of all appropriate context. With my video in hand, it'll serve as nice fodder as I upload that source data to the internet and let the public know what I know. My interview is "just asking questions" and surely an honest press has nothing to worry about if they're on the up and up. If I'm in the mood and I have another inquisitor outside my door, I'll get them next. And so on. If they hide behind their PC, I can surely visit their employer. Maybe I'll bring a bullhorn and some signs.

This is war. The press remains unchecked and abusive of their special privelege. It's time to start removing that privelege, or exploiting ourselves, since they will not police themselves. They've been asking for it, and now they're going to get it. The paparrazification of media cannot be a one way street where the inquisitor cashes in and the target remains a victim with no remuneration.

This is not the freedom of the press our forefathers envisioned. Decent Americans have another fight on their hands. Frankly, I know we're up to it, slippery slope be damned.

78 You didn't see the NY Times doing this to Kitty Dukakis in 1988 [probably because they endorsed her husband]. At the time, her alcoholism was well-known, but it wasn't reported on until she checked in rehab in early 1989 [and then there was that whole rubbing alcohol episode]. Why wasn't the hint of her problem relevant then and Cindy McCain's past problem relevant now?

I think we all know the answer to that question.

Why, oh why can't The American Spectator announce it will pay $50,000 for an interview with Obama's college drug dealer? Or a million, for that matter? It's not like the guy will ever emerge, but it will keep the story alive.

And how about a couple of bucks for the homeless men serviced by Jodi Kantor?

What is Longtail words? this question ever have much persion ask me ,because he fuzzy to this words, but what is longtail words ? in my opinion longtail is a concept of relative.

At first:Take nike shoes for example, nike shoes was mainstream, because nike shoes had been much people known,if people find shoes,he often at search engine write nike shoes for find nike shoes, but relative nike shoes, nike air max is non-mainstream,becaue nike air max was little search than nike shoes,so nike air max was nike shoesกฏ longtail,Of course nike max shoes ,nike free also was nike shoesกฏ longtail.

Second: For example nike air shoes, because people at search this word in engine often write nike air shoe, this mistake often have person take,so nike air shoe was nike air shoesกฏ longtail.
