McCain at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner [Updated Vid]
UPDATE: PART 2 ADDED

Several commenters asked about this, I missed it but I'm watching it now.

(updated the vid - better sync)

Part 2 below the fold.

Ugghhhh... He tributes Obama at the end of this one.

1 McCain has a good sense of comedic timing.  He did a pretty damn good job with this.

Posted by: Reggie1971 at October 16, 2008 09:59 PM (H8wQz)

2 McCain was very good.

Obama was OK, but paled* in comparison to McCain.

McCain was hillarious, really had me rolling. Obama not so much. He has never seemed like a funny or fun guy. Detached and aloof. His lines he made were a bit harsh at times to. Like punching someone in the face or saying the senate were low-life punks and scumbags then saying oh John is there to.

He made a crack about russia which is weak.

McCain nailed Hillary and Bill in the funniest way that former supporters of theirs like me find very funny.

It was great thanks for thi vid.

Obama... not so much. OK, he bombed... He stunk the place up... Sarah Silverman must have written his material. I was ready for him to pull out the old Henny Youngman line "take my wife... please."

18 It was an unbelievable performance. He was great. He even had Clinton and Obama in hysterics....

The crowd was shockingly supportive of his acorn and biased media jokes... what a breath of fresh air this was... now back to reality.

Posted by: PiggieSez at October 16, 2008 10:08 PM (wK9dJ)

20 BTW, I thought the best bit was "we all know the media is a civic-minded, non-partisan institution... like ACORN.".  And panning to Obama being forced to laugh at it.  That was awesome.

No, it was actually painful to watch.

Posted by: pajama momma at October 16, 2008 10:10 PM (f3xJa)

26 ppp, I don't think his Clinton cracks were aimed at the Clintons. He was mocking Obama for not having the support of the former first couple.

27

Why the fuck cant McCain come across like that in a debate where people are actually watching?

Alright- I know it cant be all shits and giggles, but during the debates hes looked stiffer than an undertaker

33 OMG..this was hilarious.  John McCain was spot on in his comedic timing and how refreshing to see his humor.  I loved his comments about Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, and MSNBC.  Get Olbermann a padded room...haha.  Spot on.  John McCain should use this talent to his favor on the campaign.

Obama was ok...but the laughs were flat as compared to McCain.  He just wasn't as funny as McCain.

Posted by: PiggieSez at October 16, 2008 10:16 PM (wK9dJ)

37 I think Obama was absolutely terrible.  McCain's jokes were intelligent and incisive and genuinely funny.  Obama was about poking fun at his own ears, calling McCain old, and talking about his own awesomeness and messiahness.  Ugh.

Posted by: Qwinn at October 16, 2008 10:16 PM (3FVXC)

38 I always thought McCain had a dry sense of humor-from back in 2000 when he told Don Imus he was running around stealing Bush signs, and "whatever else it takes"-- and he showed that tonight. Who was the old guy behind him chawing his cud?

Posted by: Wilhelm Klink at October 16, 2008 10:17 PM (8D00g)

39 McCain rocked the roast, Uhhbama was a painful dud who drew gentleman's claps.

It reminds me of the time Bob Dole went on Letterman just after his defeat in 1996, when Bob really slew the place and had everybody in stitches.

I worked for Bob during that doleful campaign. All my friends, who voted for Clinton despite my best efforts, came to me after the Letterman performance and to a man said, "Wow, Bob Dole was really fantastic during Letterman. If he only had been that way during the campaign, I might have voted for him. I had no idea he was so real."

I watched the Letterman show with Dole and never laughed once, but only because I had heard every single thing he said one hundred thousand times before. Never, at any point of the Letterman show did Bob ever say anything that hadn't been an integral part of his stump speech for, oh, a couple years. It was all old hat.

American hadn't heard a line of it, though, and found Bob strangely new and refreshing in defeat.

It is a crime of the MSM news filters if you ask me. You wonder why McCain isn't saying this or that on the campaign trail? Well, he is saying this or that, and he being 'real' and engaging.

All that is under wraps tho, again. All hail Uhhbama!

Mccain said dolbermann has his own mission accomplished banner for Obama winning. He said Olbermann could stick it you know where, or something.

McCain was really funny. He should have just wise cracked obama all night.

McCain rocked!   Great Comic Timing.

Obama stank. Big Time. his jokes weren't funny and he had to follow McCain. Everyone laughed politely at his jokes which really weren't  clever at all.  I am sure that his writers wrote them, but nothing was really funny...and his delivery wasn't very good.  Obligatory laughs and applause from the crowd.

Posted by: KCLady at October 16, 2008 10:27 PM (4eYzF)

57 I will follow my Dole/McCain, Clinton/Obama comparison up in a couple more ways regarding the MSM:

On a personal level, the press corps liked Dole personally much, much more than they ever liked Clinton. They also like McCain much, much more than they have ever liked Obama.

Despite this, they carried water for Clinton, and now they carry water for Obama. Despite this they portrayed Dole as an outclassed old man, as they do regarding McCain today.

The national press corps knows these men pretty well. Still, they will stab at the Republican given the chance, and they will rush to the Democrat's defense, regardless of all.

60 I almost cried as much as on the day I watched him and the other POWs come home.   He is a warrior, and he has given his all for his country.  His acknowledgement and tribute to Obama was reminiscent of Tecumseh...how can you respect yourself, if you have no respect for your enemy.   And, yes, he made me laugh.  I think Obama and those media folks were feeling a little ashamed tonight.  His heartfelt tribute to Alfred E. Smith was pure gold.  And god love Hillary, too.

I'm gonna catch the Cspan replay tonight, 12:30-ish.

Great use of humor. He makes a few good strong points that will reinforce what he's going to run for the rest of the campaign. This was so damn smart, it's hard to believe he did it on purpose. At the debate where his best line was a stumble, "Senator Government." He needs to get this sort of sharp, clever pointed stuff across to the general electorate.

109 McCain is a genuinely passionate and humorous guy who's not afraid to let a little emotion show, he needs to it more.

Some McCainiacs hate the "McCain's Brain" videos on YouTube, I love them. They portray Mac as human and you identify with him, even through the parody. Highly recommended if you've never checked them out. The most recent one (for last night's debate) is fucking hilarious.

111 FWIIW, the Accolades for Obama at the end are actually a handfull of razors tossed to Obama--there s no way he can handle those without getting cut.

Like the earlier ads that McCain paid for that were genuinly congraculatory.

Obama shit on those--it will be interesting to learn what he did tonight.

But not interesting enough to stay up all night for.

117 When McCain made Hillary laugh -- and I didn't think it was the world's greatest joke or why it tickled her so much (about an obscure religious holiday), it was the most human and touchable I've seen Hillary for quite some time.  Weird, but kinda cool.

Posted by: ArrMatey at October 16, 2008 11:44 PM (35LYA)

118 I watched this on Hannity and Colmes (not sure if the other "networks" covered this) and McCain killed - good timing, looked up from his notes (Obama had toruble with that, I thought - more used to the teleprompter), great zings on Obama and the media.  The audience seemed to laugh more than when Obama was up.  I thought his closing was classy - acknowledging the historic aspect of the campaign, and his last statement - "Although I can't wish him luck, I do wish him well" - put him head and shoulders above anything Obama could follow with.  McCain makes me proud.

Posted by: DougV at October 16, 2008 11:45 PM (EXsuU)

McCain was fabulous.  His humor was dramatically better than Obama's.

And - when he gave kudos to Obama and the achievement of our nation having a black man contending for the presidency, McCain himself looked presidential.

Conservatives and McCainiacs may not like McCain "being nice" to Obama.  But - those whose votes you wish to capture:  independents, "on the fence" Democrats or even some Republicans - will like an appreciate McCain's statesman-like words in this speech.

It was a "10"!

121 I watched the Letterman show with Dole and never laughed once, but only because I had heard every single thing he said one hundred thousand times before.

Posted by: Cowboy at October 16, 2008 10:17 PM (0u7vW)

The difference? We are still 2.5 weeks away from the election. McCain had a stage and used it well. Dole never got that chance.

I was under the impression during 1996 that Dole's handlers didn't want him being too funny because he has a sharp, sarcastic sense of humor, and the Clinton media was in full force with the theme of "mean" republicans?

I admit that I had 2 babies at the time, so I didn't pay great attention, but I come from the midwest and the Dole on the campaign trail wasn't the one from back home.....could have just been the media filter like you say.

135 McCain rocked. He was not only funny and larger than life, but he told the truth and laid out campaign points along the way. That's brilliant. A lot of people can tell some jokes or present a presidential campaign or speak at a fundraiser full of rich people or address a television audience - McCain did all at once and did it with perfect timing and touch and delivery. He can run his campaign on that speech for the next few weeks.

Obama wasn't bad - the self-deprecating thing was safe, the economy jokes much less so. He barely pulled those off. Nobody in that room is going to miss any meals any time soon, but a lot of them got hurt hard in recent weeks. He was in his strength on the straight up speechifying at the end and he is indeed very, very good at that.

Anyone who thinks this is how you conduct yourself in a debate though should get real. Of course he couldn't do this during a debate. You have to get as much stuff in as you can about the other person plans compared to yours etc, etc.  Its like comparing apples to oranges.
I would love to see him give this whole schtick in prime time. Give him a mixed crowd even and he'd kill. It was a pleasure to watch, he even had Obamessiah laughing.

154 I too saw this live while on an exercise machine at the gym... I double over laughter at times.  McCain had the looks and timing of Don Rickles.

What got me... and look at the vid again, there is an old geezer over the left shoulder of McCain.  That guy must have had a tape worm.  He was non-stop nibbling at something, constantly wiping his face, hands, whatever to the point his napkin was completely covered like a soiled diaper.  What's remarkable he didn't laugh at any of the jokes or even a clap.  The guy was too busy eating or his earing aid batteries were shot.  The clincher was, after he calmed down from eating....it may have been during Obama's turn, he picked up something from the table, it did not look edible (it was rectugular in shape) and stuck it in his mouth as to chop down on it.  He must have had denture failure, since he put it down right away.  He must have been a hobo that fell off the train and found a tux with white tie and they threw behind the speakers.  Watch it one more time... hilarious.
