The reason that Joe must be destroyed comes down to the Left's understanding of symbolism.  If Barack Obama told the CEO of Exxon that hey I'm going to spread the wealth around, well it might make a small splash but basically it's just acknowledging what people instictively already know about Obama namely that he is going to soak the rich.  Obama doesn't really deny that what with all the $250k+ tax commercials running.  This however is different.  This is Obama telling a guy most people can relate to, a plumber, a regular guy certainly not a rich guy, that I'm going to redistribute your wealth and people are taking notice.  The symbolism of BO telling almost literally "joe six-pack" that he is going to "spread the wealth" is jarring and undercuts BO and the Democrats claims to representing the common man while simultaneously playing into the worst stereotype of Dem's and Obama as taxraisers and socialists. 

Therefore Joe must be destroyed in any way possible.  Worst case scenario they'll paint him as a Republican operative unless they can dig up some better dirt on him.  Does it change the fact that Obama said what he said?  Of course not but it would change the symbolism and that is what they are afraid of.  Not what Obama said but who he said it to and who that person represents in the minds of many voters (namely themselves).  In other words the Dems are scared that when Obama told Joe the plumber that he was going to "spread the wealth" around he was also telling Dave the electrician and Steve the roofer and George the Landscaper and Tom the factory worker and Susie the small business woman etc that he was going to take their money.  I truly believe that is the reason they will go after Joe with everything they've got.  OBTW it's also why the went after Palin so hard.  Not because they hate her so much but they hate the symbolism of a blue collar, headstrong, independent, pulled themselves up by the bootstraps story.  It cuts into the world of helplessness and despair that the Dems construct in order to sell themselves as the savior.  So they have to ruin the story and undercut it's powerful symbolism.    

Also, of course, there is the inchoate rage of the Left that always wants to destroy its opponents especially the successful ones.

The reasoning was this.  Obama's internal polls tanked.  The press was talking up this guy something had to be done.  Problem was that Obama is on tape with his quote and they didn't believe that they could spin his words since McCain did a good job in the debate putting out the spreading the wealth line over and over.  There is nothing Obama could do to change the talking point.  After the top brass talked they decided to move to attacking the messenger to try and get people talking about something else.  They decided to go the Clinton route with the women scandels (sorry PUMAs)  The memo went out and the attacks began.  It was really that simple.

Now I don't need to go into the risks of this line of attack.  Everyone here has already talked about it.  The number being bantered about is a 2-4 point poll drop for Obama with "numbers only getting worse if this isn't stopped now."  Hence the panic.

BTW Rasssmusean now has things even in Ohio.  Rumors are that things are looking up there, even before the debate began.  ACORN is not selling well in that state.  Add in the Joe effect and we should get the old ace back that we are seeing today on a more permanent basis.
