I grew up in small town GA and the most vocal and black hating racist I ever met was a guy in my division from North Dakota. Before he joined the Navy he had never met a black person and he also said he could not understand what all the fuss was about. After meeting a few of what we called the category 4 blacks he changed.

 

Things may well be different now with no draft and the military only taking high school graduates, but back then there were a lot “bad” people in the Navy, as well as some hard core racists. I generally found that the military reflects society as a whole.

I'm a highschool dropout (expelled actually) but I was accepted later after my 17 credits in one semester of college, and the fact my asvab AFQT was 97.

It's cyclic. My son joined the Marines just over a year ago and would not have been able to get in without completing HS. At a slightly different point of the year, he could have with ASVABs high enough. The services tend to move those criteria somewhat depending on labor market factors. The same goes with reenlistment incentives.
