McCain And Obama React To John Lewis' Idiocy

I'm putting this in a new post since the last one ran kind of long.

First, McCain.

"Congressman John Lewis' comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale," McCain said. "The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama's record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign."

McCain continued, saying "I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I've always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track."

"I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America."

Naturally, through his spokesman Obama tries to have it both ways.

“Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies. But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States ‘pals around with terrorists.’ As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Senator Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead”

My guess is this isn't going to go very far. The press obviously aren't going to dig into it. Come on, Lewis is a Democrat and besides most of them probably agree with him.

As for McCain, what's he going to do? Yeah he could go on the offensive about smear tactics, uncivil discourse and the double standards of the left but what's that going to accomplish? Is that going to move the needle as much as ACORN/Obama and the economy? It's late in the game and you can only attack on so many fronts without stepping on your own message.

Of course this kind of attack is the thing that strikes at McCain's sense of honor so I'm sure he'll want to do it and in a better world, could do it. I'm just not sure with three weeks left and the economy at the top of everyone's mind, it will serve him well.

1 Will this convince McCain to start hitting Obama on Rev. Wright?

3 Nah, McCain doesn't want to get his petticoats dirty. His precious sense of honor is more important than the troops or the country.

6 McCain needs to remain presidential to some degree. He can't come out there and sound like a total dick. Palin chomping the ass off Obama is better, as well at RNC and 527's just obliterating him on the airwaves.

So what now?  Time to surrender?  It's McCain's duty to fight back if he truly believes that Obama would cause us to lose in Iraq.  That's he unwilling to do what is necessary (e.g. Wright) suggests to me that he doesn't believe his own rhetoric about the importance of victory in Iraq.

By the way and a little off-topic, but did Palin contradict McCain on North Korea? I'm having flashbacks of the Pakistan controversy two weeks ago.

These people are absolutely shameless.

And, I'm sorry, civil-rights hero not-withstanding, but John Lewis is as dumb as a box of hammers.  I'm not kidding.  If every frickn issue is civil rights related, you are just plain dumb.  "My 401k went down, must be racist."  "It's raining, well just like the water hoses in the 60's, that's racist."  Give me a break.

Well.  Nothing.  Because McCain has problems with going on the offensive.  If it DOES'NT come up, it will DO nothing.  Much more effective to continue down the same the path he's been on.  Mr. Rogers on prozac.  /snort

11 Apparently this is what our future is going to be. Obama must have been the kid on the playground that took the ball away and blamed everyone else. If he had any decency he would come out and address this issue himself.  He would be a leader if he denounced what Lewis said. But we all know that will never happen.

12 Yeah, Obama can basically call Palin a pig and get away with it. It's not as if McCain told some anecdote comparing O to some big fluffy cat from Maine or anything. Geez.

16 I just put on my tin-foil thinking cap to ponder this a bit, and it seems to me that Obama people could have put this in Lewis' (and Meeks' and Reid's and  . . .ad infinitum) ear, just so as to be able to claim innocence, yet not roundly denounce the comments.  Like He's running His Own Underground Hopenchange Railway, if you will.  Who knows where the next one will appear?

McCain and Palin are returning to Pennsylvania on Tuesday; my guess is that their internals show them down 5-7 points in Iowa, New Mexico, and Wisconsin and down 3-5 points in Minnesota; all those states work for McCain pretty well demographically (older population and a lot of catholic voters), so it makes sense for McCain to visit those states even if the polls show him down.  Next week may be the last week for offense.

The left has tried to make a big deal of the fact that Palin was visiting WV; it turns out that she isn't after all and just stopping by the airport to cross over to SE Ohio.  These fools are trying to make stuff up to demoralize the base and drive the narrative that this is over just as they tried to do to Hillary Clinton.

If I was coach of Team McCain, I'd be screaming into my mic for the offensive coordinator to "send in Romney!" Cuz when all is said and done, things like this are just noise. McCain needs someone to intercept the economy football and get it moving the other way down the field. (Hey, I'm a girl. Of course my football metaphors suck.)

Romney could do that. McCain should trot him out and announce that Romney will be his economic czar and tell people that he's already got a plan to turn things around just like he turned around the olympics. People trust Romney on economics. He could make the difference for McCain.

So where the hell is he? Is it McCain who won't deal with him or Romney who won't come into the fold? It's nuts that he's not being used.

22 I would start pointing out to people that to disagree with the democrats means you will be called a racist. They were cocky enough to do it to the Clintons, of all people, they've done it through out the campaign, and if obama is elected, they will do it to any citizen who disagrees with them. They are truly race baters extrordinaire.

D^2 comes round here taunting those he takes to be creationists.  Seems he thinks scientific illiteracy is the preserve of conservatives.

Or at least he says so while snorting some homeopathic remedy, engaging in aromatherapy, and having his aura diagnosed.

He ought to talk to Lewis, who said on the House floor that so many slaves were thrown overboard years ago on their way to the Americas, sharks STILL ply the ships' routes looking for tasty corpses.

That's whack, man.  But that's the kind of stupid shit lefties believe in.

Well, I can do the tribal thing too . Except , the United States is my only tribal allegiance. I don't belong to any religious tradition . There's no way I'm claiming all of the people that share my skin tone are superior or always praiseworthy . Hell, I'm not even a very partisan sports fan . America is my only tribe .
What I want is a strong and reasonably humane leader as my chieftain. I don't mean humane like a quaker . I mean like Harry Truman, who could integrate the barracks in the U.S. army while still having the stones to drop the bomb on the Japanese . You know , humane like a mongol .

I'm actually surprised McCain hasn't started campaigning for Obama.

Any day now, any day.

27

I'm afraid McCain doesn't have the stomach for it, but if he wanted to win he say something like this at the next debate (using pretty much any question to launch into it):

"I'm getting pretty tired of being told what I am not allowed to discuss regarding Senator Obama and the election of the next president of the US.

"When we ran an ad poking fun at his lack of accomplishments by comparing him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, MSNBC said including a Senator Obama with two white women in an ad was racist.

"When we ran an ad showing his Germany speach with the victory tower in the background, Bob Herbert of the Wash Post said including Senator Obama with such an obvious phallic symbol was racist.

"When Gov Palin poked fun at his time as a community organizer, we were told by the media that we were comparing him to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and that was racist.

"When we ran an ad questioning his ties to Franklin Raines, one of those most responsible for the Fannie Mae fiasco, we were told by Harry Reid that including Senator Obama with a black man in an ad was racist.

"When Gov. Palin questioned his ties to American terrorist Bill Ayers, we were told by the Associated Press that associating Senator Obama with a white man was racist.

"When we questioned his ties to ACORN and the entire sup-prime lending debacle, we were told by Barney Frank that questioning the granting of loans to those not credit-worthy was racist.

"Now Senator Obama has not said these things himself, but he has been perfectly willing to stand back silently while others make the accusation.  He is fine with issues that may be damaging to him being taken "off the table". Finally today, Rep. Lewis went too far by calling me a modern-day George Wallace.  Senator Obama's response?  While Rep. Lewis should not have said it, I brought it on myself.

"The overwhelming majority of Americans despise racism.  But they also despise those who charge "RACIST" simply to avoid taking resposibility for their actions.

"So what will it be Senator Obama?  Are we allowed to discuss these issues?

There is no good answer for Obama.  If he says no, McCain says, "fine, we'll see if the American people agree with your opinion..."  If he says yes, then McCain says, "then please tell your cheerleaders in the Dem party and the media to stop it, right now for the record.  And let's start going over your answers to these questions right here in this debate."

Of course, the media will go bat-shit crazy, but who cares.  It will resonate with the average American and also get people thinking about what the next four years might be like if you dare to question The One.

28 A drug crazed thief is pointing a loaded automatic at your nose demanding your life and you ask him politely to put down the weapon.

An overload of senatorial statesmanlike etiquette ain't gonna win the shoot-out at the OK Corral in Tombstone, AZ.

It isn't that what McCain said was wrong, or even the way he said it was 'wrong' had he concluded with a crisp judgmental tone on Obama for allowing the promotion of such ugliness from his campaign instead of "pretty please with sugar on top do what is right." Perhaps the final word arrives on the installment plan.

Posted by: maverick muse at October 11, 2008 06:38 PM (F1b/5)

29 McCain must pound 2 points into the public consciousness.
1. Criticism of Obama is not racism. Playing the race card is a distraction from the issues, as Zero likes to say.
2. The Republicans are not to blame for the credit clusterfuck. We all know the facts - the rest of the electorate, those in the vast middle who generally aren't paying much attention, need to hear this over and over.

30 The Sun Times today gave a major clue that Barack Obama will indeed go down with Tony Rezko, sooner rather than later. It looks as though Rezko is about to turn on Alexi Giannoulias, the 30-year old State Treasurer of Illinois (who was elected only because Obama backed him).

Here’s where all the clues are…and then we’ll walk you through the local Chicago politics on how today’s hint by the Sun Times has us convinced, for the first time ever, that prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald could indeed send Barack Obama to jail. We need to repeat that: we never believed, until now, that Obama would go to jail for anything related to Rezko. Today, this breaking news about what Rezko is singing to the Feds about makes us reconsider all of that. Barack Obama will serve a prison sentence in the next few years — because knowing Fitzgerald, there is no reason he would be going through all of this if that was not the targeted goal in the long term.

32 I took a long walk and I decided, "Hell, no. I'm not in trouble."

It wouldn't matter at all to me that Obama is 44% Arab. The fact is he is pals with two people who fund terrorist organizations who happen to fund Arab terrorists. One of those friends gave Obama enough money to be educated at Harvard. Why?

And, to bring Jindal in this, is ridiculous. I have been following Jindal since he hit the scene. He does not have any friends who are known terrorists and he has not sat in a church for 20 years listening to a radical racist who hates America.

There. I feel better.

Posted by: kimberly_aka_kimbery_aka_awesomekimberly at October 11, 2008 06:48 PM (Rpam5)

33 Because Obama made it a national issue that McCain didn't use the last debates to criticize Obama personally TO HIS FACE, and because McCain already spent the past two debates specifically answering the specific questions asked in the debate, if this is next debate is the last shot together, McCain really ought to dismiss the "debate" forum and attack Obama face-to-face in professional verbal combat.

It would be astonishing to see McCain follow Jesus' example face to face with Obama, "in the [media] synagogue, speaking as one having authority, not as the scribes and pharisees [bloviating senators]."

THAT is what would grab the audience and shake the media to their core. That is exactly what the media demanded of McCain following the 2nd debate when they refused to acknowledge that McCain won the 'DEBATE'. That is exactly what Americans are waiting to have happen before engaging in political combat themselves. It's called "follow the leader," Senator McCain. Show us.

36 Want to second comments 27 & 29. I was going to post this on the PUMA thread (which is gold, by the way) yesterday, but didn't have time:

This may be tricky territory, so I'm not sure, but I wouldn't mind seeing some jujitsu from McCain/Palin on the race card. (Perhaps in an interview-- since it's the media that keeps bringing it up.) Take the card away from them-- point out how the cynical misuse & abuse of "racism" to deflect political criticism offensively trivializes real racism, is an insult to those who have suffered real racism, is damaging to our body public, race relations, etc., is the lowest kind of smear of your opponent, and of course distracts from important issues. This may have some resonance among Clintonians too (since Clinton really did seem to care, in good faith, about race relations, and used his presidency to address it-- only to be accused, outrageously, of racism by the Obama camp).
