Congressman John Lewis...You Know Who John McCain Kinda Reminds Me Of? George Wallace.

At one point John Lewis was an important and courageous figure in America. Now he's just a fucking hack politician who will smear someone who has the temerity to be a Republican and run against Barack Obama.

"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history," Lewis said in a statement issued today. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."

Lewis didn't accuse McCain of imitating Wallace, but suggested there were similarities.

"George Wallace never threw a bomb," Lewis noted. "He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama."

...“As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all," Lewis said today. "They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better.”

Does pointing out that Barack Obama has ties to a domestic terrorist make you racist? Apparently. Does pointing out the Barack Obama has ties to some of the most leftwing groups in America make you a racist? Apparently. Does pointing out that had we followed Barack Obama's advice we'd have handed Iraq to Islamic terrorists make you a racist? Again, apparently.

Unless Lewis and the other far left hacks can point to something McCain or Palin has specifically said that is racist or echoes Wallace and other segregationists they need to shut up. They are simply devaluing the concept of racism and exposing themselves as people who are not interested in racial equality but rather using quasi-fascist tactics to shut down any debate. That's a concept that's far more repugnant than anything McCain or Palin have ever said or done.

Oh and do enjoy this bit of tasty bipartisanship. At the Saddleback Church event, McCain listed Lewis as one of the 3 people he would seek advice from. How's that reaching across the aisle working out for you Mav?

One other thought...By your own 'logic' what kind of "conditions" are you creating Congressman Lewis when you compare McCain to Wallace? Are you suggested someone should take a shot at him like they did at Wallace? Really you son of a bitch, is that what you think should happen? Come on tell us.

Of course as Ace has pointed out many times, the left is only worried about violence when they imagine it's directed at them. Cheer leading for violence aimed at the right, it is simply another tactic.

More: Having calmed down a bit Lewis is making me almost sadder than he did mad when I first saw this. He knows what segregationist did and believed. He very nearly died standing up to them. Lewis was an American hero before I was even born and for him to throw it away and to say things he has to say in his heart are not even remotely true and will only stir up the anger and resentment he decries and fought against is an American tragedy.

I have a confession...if Obama were simply a Hillary, Kerry or Biden liberal or Chicago machine hack I'd probably vote for him simply because electing an African-American President of the United States would be worth it (we're going to have liberal Presidents, it's just the way the world works). The problem is Obama isn't a conventional liberal, he's a leftist who has hidden any trail of his prior beliefs and associations. Quite simply, McCain may not be affraid of him as President but I sure as hell am.

If Obama is elected, there isn't going to be racism in four years.

If everything's racist, then nothing's racist.

John Lewis can fudge himself.

He should take the advice of his great friend MLK and judge Obama by the content of his character and not the color of his skin.

What IS racist is comparing a guy like McCain to Wallace.(wallace was a democrat anyhow)

I lost all respect for him when he turned his back on hillary in the primary's back in february. He is a sell out and is being a race-hustler.

5 Lewis. Isn't he the guy that says "Sharks trail slave ships from one edge of the Atlantic to the other, ... Jamaica from feeding on human carcasses tossed overboard en route"

Heart in the right place overall but sees racism in every white man's heart.

8 Does it sink in to McCain that his efforts to reach across the aisle are generally worthless? He lauds this jackass Lewis at Saddleback and this is the thanks he gets. He suggests that Andrew Cuomo would be a good SEC chairman, and then we get that vid of Cuomo extolling the virtues of affirmative action in mortgage lending. Maybe this week he can say what a great guy he thinks Scott Levenson is.

It is becoming more apparent each day. John McCain has been left behind. No one wants the bipartisanship that he offers. Even if he is elected, all eyes will be on Palin.

I think the Democrats are deflecting. Since it is quite obvious that they are dependent upon racism to propel their candidate, they are accusing the Republicans of racism so that they can deflect any future charges of racism on their part. "If we are racists, it is because the Republicans made us this way."

This has been the most racist campaign I have ever seen, and it is all black racism.

Lee, i agreee.

After this election White foks are going to laugh at the claim of racism. It is just a tool for these assclowns and no one is buying it anymore.

If we are all so fucking racist why is the Halfrican a nominee?

THis is the type of shit that pisses me off to no end. I had a guy over earlier and i always argue with him over Obama. He had the nerve to say he wonders if my opposition is not racial. I ripped him a new asshole.

I grew up and am friends with nearly every AA in my town. A coulple of my closest friends are AA's and i have lived with an AA.

The idea you cannot disagree with a black man is racism or bigotry is a joke. Racism will stop when the victimiztion of their own poeple by their so called leaders stops and they let them excel and tell them their able to do anything instead of telling them they can only do what us whitey's let them.

Look at Reverand Wright. Obama going to that church for twenty years proves he has a deep hatred for whites and is the biggest racist to run for office.

It is utter nonsense and a desperate ploy. All these race-hustlers can eat a dick up until they hiccup.

15 Funny... I read this about Lewis and didn't react negatively at all. Zero on the emotional register. I think it's finally sunk in for me: This is all these people do.

They're all offense, all the time. As they have no capacity to actually /do/ anything to improve America, they are left with smearing, lying, cheating and employing other agitator tactics. There really isn't any difference between Rep. Lewis and the Klan leaders of yesteryear, other than they have substituted the poor rural whites with poor inner city mixed races. They're the party of the empty heads.

We need to be done playing defense to their predictable trash. Play counter-offense. Their primary weakness is that they're all neck deep in corruption, perversions, addictions and other aspects that separate them from the common American.

21 There are two clearly coordinated efforts by Axelrod and the Media:

1.) Whenever John McCain says something positive about someone on the otherside of the aisle they will eventually trot this person out to say something to piss off the conservative base.  It's deliberate.  Every.  Single.  One of them.

2.) Infiltrating McPalin rallies/town halls to "create news".  They are creating news, now.  They have taken their astroturfing to rallies (nothing new).  There is nothing genuine about it.

These are hard, hard lefty tactics and they are employing the Media directly.  Have no doubts about it.

This is what it tells you - they do not believe they are on their way to a win.  Neither does the media.  They understand the Ayers stuff is hitting it's target.  They know it's only the tip of the iceberg as far as "associations" go.

And so it begins

RNC Announces New Security Measures Following Violence & Vandalism

Contact: Republican National Committee Press Office,

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan released the following statement today in response to attacks against Republican volunteers and supporters, and acts of vandalism against Republican Victory centers

"There is no place for violence, vandalism, or intimidation in politics. As a result of violence against Republican volunteers and supporters, and acts of vandalism against Republican Victory centers, the RNC has redirected funds previously allocated for get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts -- totaling at least two millions dollars -- for 24-hour security at volunteer centers across the country. We are making this investment in protective security because our staff and volunteers deserve to know they are safe as they work to elect the next President of the United States.

"I am appalled that the RNC must take this action. The fraudulent activities of ACORN combined with thuggish behavior of intimidation, violence, and vandalism on the part of others are clear signs that our opponents don't believe in free and fair elections.

This is an opportunity for Palin to accuse Obama and his allies of playing the race card.  She should use Lewis in her stump speech; the media loves talking about race and the race card.

She could also invoke HRC: "the media and Obama's allies from dailykos and moveon.org are playing the race card on us the same way they played it against Hillary Clinton, someone who spent her whole life fighting for civil rights."  It's a good break from just focusing on Ayers and bring to light that asking questions of Obama's past and views is not racist.

Will McCain make this Lewis comment an issue?  That he responded suggests to me that he will.  His demand that Obama repudiate Lewis tells me that Schmidt sees something here.  The original race card controversy over the summer seemed to help McCain change the subject from Obama's trip to Europe and brought his numbers down.  I hope Obama doesn't repudiate Lewis because that would probably end the storyline.

We do hold people accountable for their beliefs and actions. On those grounds there are plenty of reasons to oppose Obama. Who is father is isn't one of them.

72 You just got smacked in the head with the PC bat by someone who stated race is a factor for him when deciding who to vote for POTUS.

Either you're shocked at the thought that anyone could give any consideration at all to the race of a political candidate or you think it's fine to shout that that candidate is a filthy ay-rab. Those are mutually exclusive positions.

Posted by: anonymous irishman at October 11, 2008 05:04 PM (RctG8)

73 McCain's response: “Congressman John Lewis’ comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale. The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama’s record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign. I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I’ve always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track. “I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America.”

Posted by: Mark1971 at October 11, 2008 05:09 PM (bdnA9)

74 Those are mutually exclusive positions.

You really think so? Personally, I think black/white racial issues have a special place in the American experience both for better and worse.

It strikes me as incredibly naive to think that electing a black man President of the United States would be of no import to this country.

Now, that's based on a few things. The first is that the candidacy be truly post-racial. Obama promised that but hasn't delivered it. Obviously it's been quite the opposite.

Secondly as I said the candidate would have to be within the mainstream of political thought. Again, Obama clearly isn't.

Would I vote for any black candidate? Since I'm not voting for Obama, no. Would I vote for a black mainstream liberal over a great conservative? No. Would I vote for a black mainstream liberal over McCain? As I said, probably. Of course I would have voted for any mainstream liberal over McCain, so do with that what you will.

Obama backed Lewis:

"Sen. Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies.

But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for president of the United States ‘pals around with terrorists.’

As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Sen. Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead."

Hopefully there's fire with this angle.  McCain should let Palin go off on this point.

Here comes John Lewis.

For a guy who did so much for our society in his life it is really sad to see him squeeze out this sort of thing now.

Congressman, George Wallace was a Democrat.

The Democrat party has a long and storied history of racism.  Lots and lots of names.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are not like any of those people.

Do you really, really want to stick your arm into this hornet's nest Congressman?

I hope not.

You need to apologize, and go sit down.

I saw something the other day where I think Ft. Wayne has more people registered to vote than live there.

It's freaking ridiculous.

Kim,

srsly.  Barack has 3 arabic names?  So do a lot of Indonesians, and they're not Arab.  Pakistanis are also not Arab.  Arab != Muslim.

Also, insert standard religious test clause here...

What is to be worried is his outright deceptive practices and his history of associations with hard line radicals and terrorists.  Remember, before the late 70s most terrorism was communist/socialist related and commited by Europeans. I shall send you a phial of my tears, how's about that?

That it is hypocritical for one who believes race is a valid factor for choosing a president would cluck their tongue at some one else?

I think it's reasonable and non-hypocritical for DrewM. to believe that 1) "all else being equal, a black US president would be a plus" while at the same time not approving of the idea that 2) "all Arabs are racial enemies of the United States" - or that 2a) "it's fair to assume that any individual Arab is an AQ symp", which is pretty close to the same thing. What I do find hard to reconcile is condoning 2/a) while apparently carping about 1).

I love how you changed "He's an arab" to she shouted "filthy ay-rab." Your dishonesty is noted.

I wasn't referring to the woman at the rally, I was talking about kim above, who was indeed SHOUTING IN CAPS about how Obama was an ARAB, an ARAB. I was being snarky, not dishonest.

I'm convinced he isn't doing nearly as well as he is being played up as doing. It's fun watching him spend all that money though, the economy certainly thanks him for bleeding cash out of moron lefties and spreading it around.

97 It strikes me as incredibly naive to think that electing a black man President of the United States would be of no import to this country.

Drew, I couldn't disagree more. Look at the record. Have any of the other "first black ... of the United States" meant anything? No, they have all resulted in black people being more openly racist.

There is no magical cure to racism. To believe that the right kind of racism (pro-black) will help is just stupid. Its stupid because its already been tried and failed. Lets try not using a candidate's race at all. For a change.

Posted by: klrtz1 at October 11, 2008 08:41 PM (EJABd)

98 I think it's reasonable and non-hypocritical...

I think it’s unreasonable and hypercritical and you trying to spin that it is not is also hypercritical and unconvincing. If you think it is legit to vote for somebody because they are black then don’t complain when someone votes for someone else because they are white. Obama is half arab and identifies with arabs, and he vacations with arabs in Pakistan, his education was funded by arabs, and he’s buddy with an arab who has ties to an arab terrorist organization. And all of these arab connections are non-American. It is not unreasonable for anyone to be concerned about his loyalties and biases. So, don't play PC games and tell me these are not legitimate considerations. You have no right to insult Kim or get on my case because I think it is ridiculous to vote for obama because he is black.

I wasn't referring to the woman at the rally, I was talking about kim above, who was indeed SHOUTING IN CAPS about how Obama was an ARAB, an ARAB. I was being snarky, not dishonest.

She never referred to anyone as s a “filty ay-rab.” And trying to spin it as snark does not give you a pass. It just makes you even more dishonest.
