SNL REPOSTS BAILOUT SKETCH, BUT DELETES "BARNEY FRANK'S" CONFESSION OF COMPLICITY

Jesus.

Didn't live up to NBC's "standards," huh? Was just taken down because of the "people who should be shot" chyron, huh?

Apparently you can smear Bush and Palin all you like, but when you properly nail Barney Frank on blocking crucial regulation, that's "unfair" as far as NBC goes.

n an interview with Gold, the show's executive producer, Lorne Michaels, said the Sandlers were distraught but had not demanded the changes. He noted the "People who should be shot" line was deleted as was a reference to their "corrupt activities."

But a comparison of the two versions shows that actually a little more than that was cut. What also was excised was any mention of the involvement of Massachusetts' Rep. Frank in the Sandler subprime mess.

Frank is the influential chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and an ardent political protector of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which participated in the subprime problem.

In the original skit Sandler addresses Frank, saying, "And thank you, Congressman Frank, as well as many Republicans for helping block Congressional oversight of our corrupt activities."

To which Frank replies enthusiastically, "Not at all!"

All that's gone in the new version, which Show Tracker has posted here.

New improved version:

1 I was one of the people who said removing the "should be shot" reference was the right thing to do and I stand by that...

... but this is way beyond that. No one and I mean no one thought the Barney Frank reference had to go. By making himself a politician, he's surely fair game for criticism, and it was just that, criticism. It wasn't any call to violence or anything.

Speaking of corruption, this sounds like some at NBC. I wonder if Frank and the Dems leaned on them or they did this all on their own?

Liberal Fascism, dissent will not be tolerated.  Even in parody form.

don't forget the "Path to 9/11" censoring, ABC is refusing to release that DVD till this day.  A documentary just came out about that whole affair.

As a conservative Christian and lifetime Republican voter, I'm glad NBC is standing up for the good name of Barney Frank, one of the most honorable men in public service.

It's bad enough that SNL really isn't all that funny any more but to let themselves be bullied by the truth squads?

9 Since they weren't exactly "public figures", if "corrupt" didn't come out, they could sue for defamamtion.  No way to edit that part.

I'm a sad panda

Barney Frank has always been at war with EastAsia, heretics!!

The SNL cast should walk over this.  If they had the balls to do the skit in the first place, they should have the balls to call the suits on this censorship now.  Or do these brave artists, who fearlessly stand up to the "threats" of George Bush, do as they are told when the threat is so much less melodramatic, but real?  I know where my money is one that one! Watch what they do, not what they say!

ps. FWIW, they nailed the "Pelosi eyes" and "Frank mouth" (shudder)!

16 And yet everyone, including us, will continue happily consuming all NBC Universal products. Hell, half the Morons here won't even be able to stop fapping to Tina Fey videos.

My nihilistic bitterness increases by the hour. Glenn Beck was right; things in this nation are nearing some sort of stress point. The difference between him and me are that he fears it; I just don't see why I should bother giving a shit any longer.

17 When I read the phrase about "properly nailing Barney Frank", I threw up a little bit in the back of my throat.

Posted by: roy at October 08, 2008 04:20 PM (cB77O)

18 "The SNL cast should walk over this."

The 2008-era cast couldn't care less. They're not in it for the comedy craft or to accomplish something with their lives; they're in it for the automatic entry it gives them into the Manhattan media elite and the continuous fawning over by sycophantic MSM whores. As long as they keep getting those phone calls asking them to show up for Vanity Fair cover photo shoots, what's done with the pig shit they churn out is of no interest to them.

Posted by: Rajiv Vindaloo at October 08, 2008 04:22 PM (Rn2+D)

19

It's not the crime that gets ya, it's the coverup, and this most assuredly counts as a coverup.

With everybody out there before this incident pushing the meme on how SNL is so relevant, isn't it relevant that SNL is now engaged in covering up "inconvenient satire."

Posted by: Lee at October 08, 2008 04:26 PM (TxTIh)

20 Of course, the prancing, sashaying, lisping Mr. Frank could never have done anything wrong.  He CARES so much for his fellow man.  (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Nothing will help McCain and the Republican's this cycle.  They badly misplayed their hand when the Fannie/Freddie/bailout shit came up in September.  Instead of immediately and forcefully placing the blame squarely on liberal social engineering via Fannie/Freddie/CRA, enacted primarily by Democrats and protected through Republican administrations by RINO's and accusations of racism against anyone who attempted reform, McCain acted irrationally by "suspending" his campaign when it would have been enough just to go back to Washington DC and cancel a few events as necessary.  During this time he may have been ok despite his overwrought freakdown but he tried the populist "wall street greed"/"casino culture" meme which played right into the Dems hands who were busy running around unabashedly blaming the entire situation on Republicans and Wall Street.  As a result the anger in the public about this rested firmly on the Republicans which has doomed them for this election cycle.  As has been noted before the public believes that the Republicans are the party of Wall Street and since everyone agreed that Wall Street was to blame clearly the fault lied with Republicans .  In addition the Republicans do hold the White House right now so it really wasn't much of a stretch for the average voter who is mighty pissed and looking for someone to pay to find the Republicans guilty.  That narrative has already ossified in people's minds and therefore we will have a President Barack Obama and a 60+ seat majority in the Senate in my view.

I think one of his major problems is that McCain's only qualification to run for President on a Republican ticket was that he has always been pro-life as far as I can tell.  Otherwise he hasn't functioned as a Republican in politics since at least 2000.  He had recieved glowing press coverage and basically operated as an independent until he recieved the nomination at which time the "rules" that the media has for Republicans suddenly began to be enforced on him again.  So far he hasn't been able to catch up and adjust to the heighened levels of scrutiny and unfair attacks that he would take for granted if he had always been seen as a Republican.  In my view that's why he made the mistake thinking that the MSM would hold off on placing blame for the bailout until it when through or at least be fair and eventually tell people the straight dope.  Rudy Guiliani/Mitt Romney or even Mike Huckabee would have known that they had to go out and get their narrative out before the Dem's was written in stone.  The major bummer about this entire thing is that he probably cost the GOP 4 or 5 senate seats and god knows how many house seats by coming out and railing against Wall Street Greed in the hopes his buddies in the media would suddenly forget he was running for President as a Republican and fall in love with his populist nonsense all over again (if this had happened in 2004 and he had made the wall street remarks those remarks would have been hailed as maverick straight talk by the media and seen, correctly, as an attack on Republicans.  In fact it would not surprise me if he thought somehow he could curry favor with the MSM by half-assedly blaming Republicans for the bailout while simultaneously being seen as a savior by brokering a deal.  In 2004 he might have gotten away with it since it would have been in the Dems/MSM interests to go along with it so they could use him to give credibililty to Dem accusations the mess was the Republicans fault.)

22 With all the criticism of Barney Fwank, some saying he takes it up the ass, my only belief is he may be bad to hold one in his mouth but it's doubtful whether he would suck on it.  Gummin' ain't suckin'.

Posted by: Fish at October 08, 2008 04:32 PM (6Rihj)

23 Guys, I need to come to SNL's slight defense here. I mean, I wish they hadn't caved at all, or cut anything out at all. The piece was obvious satire so the "they should be shot" reference can't be taken seriously. But given that they caved to pressure from the Sandlers I think it should be pointed out that the reason this part of the skit was cut was not because of Barney Frank but because the (fake) Mr. Sandler claimed he was engaged in "corrupt activities." If you read the recent news reports about the Sandler's angry reaction to this you'll understand that they strenuously object to any claims that what they did was corrupt.

Again, I don't think they should have cut anything out. But I also don't think this is an example of caving to Barney Frank or the Demcrats, just to the Sandlers in particular.

Posted by: MCPO Airdale at October 08, 2008 04:34 PM (wba6w)

25 Whatever the reason, certainly NBC new there would be side by side comparisons with the original video, and they'd get grief for having cut the Barney Frank line.

Even so. They shouldn't have caved. Although they could have had the Sandlers explain how important the billions they got from Wachovia were as far as paying for their huge donations to MoveOn.Org, etc.

Posted by: Magical Medical Mystery Tour at October 08, 2008 04:39 PM (dH4fW)

26 I have the actual copy of the video, grabbed it before it was taken down, and I'm working on converting it to a widely used mobile device format (3GP for those who are curious) because it's currently a 16 MB FLV file. 3GP should bring it down to something more managable, like 3-5 MB. Once it's down to that, we can work on distribution. Download VLC (search google for VideoLan) to play it.

27 The funny thing is that we're reduced to relying on SnL sketches to get the word out on this mess.

Posted by: Warden at October 08, 2008 05:06 PM (QoR4a)

28 How many SNL sketches have been censored for political content - and not just the bleep-edits for the canned west coast re-broadcasts?

Posted by: 13times at October 08, 2008 05:40 PM (vx9By)

29 Comparing the two videos side-by-side, they removed the "People who should be shot" graphic over the top of where it originally appeared ("We were sort of wondering why you asked us to come today"), so that isn't the reason for the edit.  The edit was solely to take out the Barney Frank comments.

Posted by: Patrick at October 08, 2008 05:40 PM (d4GA0)

30 At least they didn't take out the George Soros "Owner, Democratic Party"

I'm surprised that was left in, actually.

Posted by: wherestherum at October 08, 2008 05:49 PM (wET2y)

31 So, SNL is sanding their edginess? And to the detriment of the Right? Quelle surprise. Who knew standing up to The Man required bowing to The One.

Just quit watching. Only reduced ad money and consumer eyeballs will induce change.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at October 08, 2008 06:00 PM (sI5Ho)

32 For anyone wanting to download the original skit:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V3M5KOQY
http://rapidshare.de/files/40634436/SNLBailoutSkit.wmv.html

Yeah, the 20Mb .wmv files are clumsy, but they'll work until someone else gets a conversion done.  It still doesn't take all that long to download.

Posted by: Cortillaen at October 08, 2008 06:06 PM (kqqFF)

33 Forget the fact that Barney is an incompetent, corrupt, two-faced lying political hack only looking to line his own pockets and get his freak on, you all just don't like him because he's a homosexual and/or a known sucker of cock.

...Am I right here?

Posted by: Fritz at October 08, 2008 06:12 PM (UU4Hu)

34 Fritz: If he was gay in the cool J. Edgar Hoover or Roy Cohn way, Barney would be a hero as far as I was concerned. But he's a commie fag. It's not the gayness, it's the commiecratic. It's not that Barney is Lavender; it's that he's a Pinko.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at October 09, 2008 11:08 AM (ujg0T)

35 For the person who said that the Barney Frank part was still in the newest video, match the two videos up and notice in the old one from 5:57 to 6:02.  That is where they cut him out.
