| Trend: Second Poll Shows McCain/Palin Within 3I pray that McCain doesn't get it into his fool head that this means Everything's Awesome and that he can afford to play Nice Guy Eddie at tomorrow's debate.Comments1
Don't believe the poll - believe the trend.

Nah. But McCain's gonna have to walk a serious tightrope. The "McCain's an unstable angry man" meme is still out there, and the MSM has yards of newsprint already edited ready to roll if he looks that way.
Posted by: Charles Krauthammer at October 07, 2008 02:15 AM (xyyHG) 3
Hear, hear, Ace. The lesson should be that going after Obama helps McCain, but will he realize it?
He has a tendency toward nice guy, get along. Coming from a military background where you really do have to get along with everyone this makes sense. But come on. This is a Presidential race where the stakes are patriot in the White House, or the Marxist guy whose political career was mentored by and then begun at the home of the guy who stands on the American flag in 2001, bombed the pentagon and other federal buildings "when Obama was 8", and wishes he'd done that more. McCain has to be aggressive for the good of his country. McCain inarguably loves his country and that he recognizes what he must do is my remaining hope. I think McCain is slowly but surely getting the message.
Either that, or Cindy and Sarah went over and browbeat McCain into submission. Which would be absolutely awesome. Posted by: Baka Omaeda at October 07, 2008 02:23 AM (Z9IOH) 8
Every time McCain goes on offense he goes up in the polls and every time he stays quiet he goes down. I wonder what we can learn from these trends. McFly err McCain are you learning.

Mætenloch knows what's up.
Don't accept that these polls are weighted correctly. The trends convey some information, but the actual poll does not tell you which guy is winning. We could get stomped, or we could dominate. but Axelrod's trolls will tell people, everywhere they can, that there is no reason to vote or volunteer if you're a republican because these polls 'prove' Obama is invincible. It's simply a lie. I sure do hope the polls keep some of the lazy voters (college hippies) from the polling stations. Remember libs: they do often have drug sniffing dogs hanging around polling stations! Obama has it in the bag, so just stay home on Wednesday and don't worry about it! McCain has to take a page out of the Sarah Palin-Rudy Giuliani Big Book of Political Attack.
He's got to hammer away at Obama like a mo-fo, all the while smiling like a happy blacksmith at his anvil. All this hand-wringing over "negative campaigning" is bullshit and spin. For the most part, Americans don't mind attack ads. If you've got a valid issue (like your opponent's poor judgement in friends), and you're not lying, no one (except rabid partisans) is going to blame you if you use it beat the opposition over the head. In fact, if you can do it with a smile on your lips, and turn it into a joke, people will cheer. McCain is a genuinely funny guy, and he supposedly loves to fight. He just needs to get away from this clubby, Senatorial, "my esteemed colleague", self-love thing, which is what I think is keeping him from really going after the Messiah. He's got to unleash the happy, hell-raising McCain that we're so often told lies within him. Come on, Mac, just tell yourself, "Fuck it. I'm gonna lose this thing if'n I don't start beating Obama like a rented red-headed step-mule." Posted by: DelD at October 07, 2008 02:49 AM (hs9gk) 22
The polls may be awesome but I don't believe. It's a TRAP! Zogby is in the tank for Obama - he concocts a poll showing a closer race and that misleads McCain.
Ok, enough paranoia. In truth, McCain and Obama have their own polls and they know pretty darn well how they're doing. Posted by: Awesome Dog! at October 07, 2008 02:49 AM (cFSQf) 23

Diderot's Dog has a point. Eloquent and non-desperate writing like that moves the soul.
As a lutheran who supports Mitt Romney, I cannot support a man involved with the Keating 5. Sure, Mccain only showed up to a meeting to tell Keating to go to hell, but that's true corruption. Keating proves, beyond any doubt, that Mccain doesn't have the balls to send earmarks to friends, slam agencies on behalf of money, and avoid legal scrutiny the way Fannie Maw and ACORN have. Obama has the balls to handle those scams. When Mccain says "no, Keating, I can't betray America" Obama says "YES WE CAN!!!!" Maybe McCain will note the REAL trend: every time he sticks up for himself (or Palin does it for him) he goes up in the polls
It would be nice if McCain would stick up for free markets and explain the credit crisis to the electorate. Even if they don't understand it, just seeing that he's giving an explanation that other people say is credible will help him. Posted by: Daryl Herbert at October 07, 2008 02:53 AM (YvLui) 28
And everybody remember, Axelrod's word for the week is erratic. I imagine we will see many posts all about McCain's erratic behavior/performance/teeth/melanoma following the debate no matter what. Angry and erratic will be the buzzwords of the day. Posted by: Charles Krauthammer at October 07, 2008 02:54 AM (xyyHG) 29
tsk9, we don't see Biden because he totally humiliated Obama at the debate. He got the shit kicked out of him, and we all know it. CNN can lie all day, and polls can be cooked all day, but it's simple. Mccain wants us to see Palin ten times a day, and Obama wishes he had never met Joe Biden.
DelD has a great point: it's not unethical to attack an asshole like Obama or Ayers. The true wrong would be pretending Obama's traits aren't abhorrent. Posted by: Shill at October 07, 2008 02:56 AM (8jYMc) 30

When you get right down to it, these could be the first polls that take into account Palin's performance at the debate. I mean, polls released on Friday wouldn't have taken it into account as they would've had to call at 11pm or midnight and they don't usually do that. And weekends are always horrible for Republicans. Monday and Tuesday polling will be the first ones that take into account her performance.
Of course, that also assumes the MSM will properly weight their polls and not have their typical 54% Dem, 25% GOP weighted BS. Posted by: RedFox84 at October 07, 2008 03:11 AM (vs8h/) 42
Bob, you're right about Biden. He deserves a break.
And your Advert idea is fucking good. Seriously, it's the best way I can think of to distill who Obama is. He's a coward who affiliates with monsters and plays coy about it. Wonderful... it even makes it impossible for Obama to refute. If Mccain made that advert and ran it every day, I think he would win. Posted by: Shill at October 07, 2008 03:15 AM (8jYMc) 43
It's Palin. Some of it from the debate, more of it from some of the knifings she has been doling out since. Every time Telepromper Jesus and company have to play defense, the polls move in Palin/McWhatshisnames' favor. Obama just can't play defense very well, which is hardly surprising from a guy who has never had to fight for anything before. thebronze, it's kinda funny that we never see Michelle Obama or Joe Biden. He had to come out for the debate, but he was hidden before it and he'll be hidden until election day.
There's no need to attack him. In fact, while he's sleazy, I think he's shown that he's not really an asshole. That slip with Couric that that one ad was 'terrible', his honest appraisal that Mccain is a great guy, and that comment about Hillary, to me all those show that he knows he's in bed with crooks. Sure, he's a crook too, but he's small time. He doesn't want to take the USA down a peg or two, he just wants a slice of the pork action in the Senate and to Bork pro lifers. I don't like Biden, but I don't think he should be hated. I think he's hidden because he's just not in tune with Obama, and watching Biden often makes you think Mccain would be a good president. Posted by: Shill at October 07, 2008 04:29 AM (8jYMc) 47
Astute read on Biden, Shill.
yeah, he's not an asshole, but he is a huge liability. Has there ever been a candidate more afraid of being upstaged by his VP (who really isn't anything great) than BO? I think BO avoids doing things together because Biden next to him makes BO look like an ungainly, jug eared, congressional page, or the waiter. RACIST!!! Posted by: moronizer at October 07, 2008 04:34 AM (JxyMA) 48
Shill, I agree to an extent. Biden has a history of lying, cheating and saying stupid/offensive things about various groups. I agree he's small time, but a crook is still a crook, although he's not in the same league as the Franks and the O'Bamas of the world. One of my problems with Biden is that he's a buffoon that really does think that he's smarter than everyone else, but he's too stupid to know that he's not. He proves that just about every time he opens his pie-hole. I'm not inclined to give him very much slack. Posted by: thebronze at October 07, 2008 04:34 AM (YlH3h) 49

Given how much pain Biden
has gone through with loss in his life, I don't mind being called a
pussy by saying he deserves a break if he was absent attending to
family affairs.
bronze, we should be pissed off at the likes of Biden. He's a symbol of everything wrong in the Senate. I'm so sick of congressmen who are so petty and slimy and greedy. Our nation is being fleeced by nearly 535 men on Capitol Hill. Mccain has never asked for an earmark and nobody seems to give a shit! All I'm saying is that I reserve a special level of hatred for outright traitors. Ayers wore a ring made from a downed US Navy Aircraft, and Obama helped Ayers pollute our schools with lies about how racist and awful America and Capitalism are. That's a special kind of evil. Obama has so many of these kinds of links that I suspect he has also chanted 'God Damn America'. Biden and Obama are both shitheads, of course. But Biden doesn't seem to have the stomach for depths Obama sinks to. He will not be horrified when Mccain is sworn in, that much is clear. Biden is like the drug dealing whore who has a turn of conciousness and rats our her rapist pimp to Chuck Norris. He's not going to be made a saint, but he's justifiably not going to get a roundhouse kick to the balls. Posted by: Shill at October 07, 2008 04:59 AM (8jYMc) 56

You're right, if so. Obama truly is the most racist candidate for president we have ever have. His memoirs are racist, his choice of minister was racist, and his work with Ayers, a racist terrorist who told kids to murder their parents, was extremely racist. 1. He's got to keep a little in reserve for the 3rd debate.
2. This one's a town-hall and it's going to depend on the questions. He does not want to come over as an ass-hole but he needs to take advantage of the opportunities that arrive. He seems ready. 3. Barry was holed up yesterday studying again (teleprompter withdrawal) ... he should be much more awkward than in the first debate . Posted by: gh at October 07, 2008 07:14 AM (EhUaQ) 60

Can't really believe the good news yet. Need more polls, including Gallup and Rasmussen to show the trend. They're still moving the wrong way as of yesterday. Other possible explanations: 1) Helping the Obama campaign by falsely raising McCain supporters' hopes. 2) Helping the Obama campaign by showing a close race, making it easier for them to ring the "It's close; it's not over, don't relax!" bell. 3) Helping their own ratings by showing a tight race in advance of the 2nd debate. Hmmm...don't know if I'm too paranoid, or not paranoid enough here. What a state we're in, not being able to just believe what's reported. Every mainstream media outlet should just change its name to Pravda, and remove all doubt. Posted by: Evan3457 at October 07, 2008 07:55 AM (PtbIm) 62

I sure do hope the polls keep some of the lazy voters (college hippies) from the polling stations. A report yesterday had Cuba Gooding Junior at a college rally for Obama. Afterwards, he apparently played pied piper and marched a couple hundred college kids across the street to register and vote early. Obama knows his minions will show for the bread and circuses and is acting accordingly. Early voting may sink us. Posted by: kidney at October 07, 2008 08:29 AM (mPhH9) 64
And what has c hanged? The attack McCain made on Obama yesterday on Fannie/Freddie didn't do it. Not long enough ago to show up in the polls.
No, the only thing that has changed is that Palin is out of the cage. Off the leash. Did well in the debates. If I can say it once, I can say it a thousand times. Palin is an inspired choice. Smart, attractive, and extremely good on the attack. I just hope there is enough time left. Posted by: Scott at October 07, 2008 08:41 AM (A+pZA) 65

A Democracy Corps (D) survey of 1000 likely voters taken October 1-5 also shows a three-point margin for Obama, 49%-46%. And fourth: Diageo-Hotline-poll- Obama-Biden 46% McCain-Palin 44% -- The race has tightened in the last day. After trailing by 5-7 pts. for the last 10 days, McCain is now just 2 pts. behind Obama. --One potential reason: Obama's one-time lead on the question of who'd best handle the economy has evaporated. Today, Obama and McCain are tied at 42%. Independent voters favor McCain on the economy by an 8 pt. margin (42-34%). Posted by: Denise at October 07, 2008 12:10 PM (4GW6P) 68
In all these polls the Bradley effect isnt inclued. But this is about 10 %. Even if you take only the half, a margin 1 to 2 points less for McCain/Palin against Obama/Biden means still, that the Republican ticket is 3 to 4 % in front. And I am sure, if the Presidential candidates are tied, the charming Sarah Palin getting enough of the true Hillary women votes, who would never vote for the man who destroyed her presidency: bette a republican Vice-President Palin that nothing.
