Notably Pessimistic Blogger Feigns Excitement Over New CBS Poll: McCain Within Three?

Within three, among likely voters, cutting Obama's lead down from 9 since the Palin-Biden debate alien autopsy.

Do I believe it? No, not with Gallup and Rasmussen both showing 8 point leads. I'd like to believe, but for now I say: Outlier.

However, it could be that Palin has goosed the ticket a little bit and recaptured a bit of her former attractiveness to women and independents. And I certainly like the direction.

Who knows. I'll be watching Gallup and Rasmussen closely tomorrow.

Jay Cost, by the way, disagrees with me and thinks that McCain might as well "pee into the wind" as attempt to deflect blame from Republicans when it comes to a banking crisis. He suggests just hitting Obama on Ayers and Wright.

I say: Um, okay, can we not try all three?

Here's why Cost is wrong: The public is incensed that they have to pick up the tab for these deadbeat mortgagors, and we have every fucking Democrat on videotape saying we need to subsidize them more.

Even if McCain can't win on this issue, I am quite sure there is a meaningful difference between losing on one issue by five and losing by 30.

7 Ace, you're right about calling CBS's poll an outlier. CBS has generally, and traditionally, been less reliable in it's polling data than Gallup or Rasmussen.

I also say the same, as I pointed out earlier, about Survey USA and it's polling data (which is traditionally all over the place, and unreliable therein.)

8 Especially since Obama piece-o'-shit Barney Frank is claiming that attacking Democrats' idiot decisions to force banks to make bad loans and refusing to control Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is now racist.

http://tinyurl.com/44qzx5

Frank should be pulled onto national TV and asked point-blank if requiring black people to meet the same standards as white people to be loaned money is racist. Ten to one he says it is.

But Ace ain't gonna be happy until he sees all the grimacing on MSNBC come election night, once they have to reluctantly admit that their savior lost.

11 And if McCain is smart, that's exactly what he'll do: force Obama to state on national TV that requiring minorities to meet the same credit standards as whites is "racist", and that people who are in bankruptcy should automatically have their loan amounts reduced, with taxpayers picking up the tab.

McCain has done too little far too late. I blame the idiotic GOP voters who helped secure his nomination. Why in blue blazes would an old, cancer-stricken RINO stand a chance against a young, captivating liberal?

Our nation is a very superficial one, especially among young voters. McCain is just unelectable in their eyes -- and mine, too. He's a fucking jabroni.

McCain is making a huge mistake if he doesn't continue to hammer the donks for being at the center of the financial meltdown.  Even in ultra-liberal MA, people are beginning to turn on Barney and the rest of the clowns who brought us to the brink of disaster.

This issue is going to be front and center well past election day.  People are getting pummeled and they are pissed and afraid and every other issue is is secondary.

The facts are on McCain's side.  Keep firing.

Very Much Agreed, Ace.  With as much videotape at hand of Democrats saying "Nothing wrong with F&F!" as there is in this situation, not to mention the other mountains of evidence, if we can't at least make this issue a draw, we really might as well just give up completely.  I don't think things are that bad.  If anything, this could prove to be the best opportunity we'll ever have to destroy the BS "Democrats are less greedy and better on the economy" meme.  Would be horrific to waste it.

I don't know.

I knew I remembered this from 2004, when everyone started "leaking" that Kerry was gonna win ohio by a large margin.

“We want to look at the exit polls,” Jackson said, referring to at least two non-partisan Election Day polls, by Zogby and CNN, which gave Kerry 53 percent and 51 percent of the vote, respectively. “We don’t want to be presumptuous, but these numbers in the Butler, Clarmont, Warren and Hamilton counties are suspicious.”

The pro-Kerry camp believed that they should have had an at least 2% (actually 5%  if you include the third party's) lead over Bush in ohio.  If you base it on the more positivie guage by Zogby, Kerry was banking on a 6%, more like 9% victory over bush, when factoring independants.

Then midday, though not reported until after the polls close, supposedly Rove rallied the troops and said that his polls said different.

So The polls, that offered at least a 2% (actually 5%) advantage to Kerry ended up being wrong.

Just like every battleground poll.

Oh, I just grabbed the first linky.

24 Another day, another charge of racism:

"Rep. Barney Frank said Monday that Republican criticism of Democrats over the nation's housing crisis is a veiled attack on the poor that's racially motivated.

The Massachusetts Democrat, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said the GOP is appealing to its base by blaming the country's mortgage foreclosure problem on efforts to expand affordable housing through the Community Reinvestment Act."

People say the financial crisis is the Republicans fault cause they did nothing when they controlled the White House and Congress. I say any attempt to rein in Fannie and Freddie would have resulted in charges of racism. Today, Barney Frank proves the point.

Anyone know the margin of error for the CBS poll?

I also looked at the WSJ/NBC poll that allah linked showing O up by 6.  that has a margin of error of 3.8 (? crap, think it was .8 might have been .6) so that means the overall result is still withing statistical error.

Hmmm, maybe things are tightening.  Well, that bodes well for the Tues debate; at least McCain appears to have a chance to keep the direction going in the right place.

And actually, I think some of the hints of nervousness I noted this weekend among ozombies might have been due to their uncomfortable reactions to those various creepy children singing/chanting  Youtubes going around.

Anyway, I also saw that Insty linked to the CBS "more fake donors for Obama" story.

Wickedpinto, a "load of shit" implies the absence of truth. Look at a picture of McCain and tell me -- honestly -- that he looks healthy. I think the man is a great American and a true patriot, but a good GOP presidential candidate he is not.

Just contrast him with GWB in 2000. Bush was much younger, in terrific shape, and passionate about his beliefs. McCain looks like a geriatric by comparison.

44 McCain can't out -argue Obama at this date. He needs to out -psyche Obama. He needs to trick Obama into self-destructing. McCain needs to feed into Obama's delusions, his grandiosity, his belief that he can save the world, and let Obama show the world how out of touch with reality he is.

See American Thinker on Obama's  Narcisstic Personality Disorder (http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/09/obama_oprah_and_the_guru_malig_1.html) and use it to help the O send himself spinning off into space. Remember the OODA loop? Use it.

This is not the time to challenge him with facts. It's the time to belittle him so he will lose it.

Also, it's not bad for McCain to go into election day behind in the polls, Most of Obama's new registrations are not serious voters, If they think he's won it, they won't get out of bed to vote. Hope for rain.

Obama is the young, strong, Alpha Male. He's the one celebs worship as a god (confirming he's Alpha). All the fashionable people back him. His program: Blacks, Latinos, White Women against White Men, works for White women. Again, most of whom are not married.

A) An accurate poll.

60 In Presidential elections I don't think there's any such thing as "too little, too late". Some of you are falling into the same inside-out view that tricks companies into giving up on popular products and ad campaigns just as the public starts to notice them. We've been immersed in this stuff since the primaries, but most people out there are only now starting to pay attention to the race. They're hearing about Ayers for the first time and, at best, have a vague memory of the dear Rev. Wright. If McCain had started on Ayers and Wright months ago, the Obama campaign and their cooperative media friends would have easily buried the message long before most people were paying attention. (Just like they did when bloggers raised them back then, remember?)

Honestly, when I see those latest videos from McCain, as fired up as he ever gets, I don't see a man who's had his arm twisted into talking about these issues. I do think he was reluctant to go into Fannie and Freddie during the bailout deal because it may have backfired (country first). The delay in getting the deal done made his window narrower than he expected, but Palin's popularity and skill may make up for that. Now he's gambling that he and Palin have time to get in hard punches before Obama can respond effectively. And I think it has a good chance of working. It could go either way.

2006: 13,000 and climbing
2008: Market below 10,000 and falling fast

Obviously, Rep. Gleason is the name of the local Dem rep.

64 So, h2u, what is your suggestion?  Should people acquiesce to Obama's "ascension" just because McCain is not the conservative we wanted?  I think you may be suffering more from a case of self-pity than from realistic pessimism.

I have seen way too many elections (and the polls leading up to them) to recognize anything more than the same old pattern--only this time on msm steroids.  If Governor Palin and Senator McCain keep pushing forward the facts about Senator Obama forward until the end, they will win.

Posted by: DCox at October 06, 2008 09:21 PM (2pT9a)

65 Maybe I'm a moron (of the bad kind), but I believe a large number of people will wake up after the World Series and say, "Hey! Isn't there an election this year? I wonder who's running?" There is enough fluctuation in these polls that I'm convinced a lot of people remain undecided - enough to sway the election either way when they are forced to make a final decision.

Just because you guys want to plunge your heads into the earth and pretend its not an issue to image-conscious young Americans doesn't mean it is so.

It is an issue, and it's why the country is likely doomed unless the voting age is raised to about 25 (for non-military citizens) where it belongs.  But Democrats are all about devolving the republic into a democracy (and then, of course, a totalitarian state), and that means forever expanding the vote to the least productive, least informed, least affected, and most easily conned demographics.

And they've convinced everyone that it's a "tragedy" that not even more people vote.  Expect to see an Obama administration pull out all the stops to make sure that voting is as easy as blowing your nose.  Restoration of felon voting rights.  Mobile voting centers cruising college campuses and union shops.  Online same-day registration and voiting.  Text your Presidential choice to 55555.

It's already started in Ohio with the "vote a month early" bullshit.  The easier voting gets, the dumber the average voter is going to be.  To the left, that's a feature, not a bug.

73 "So, h2u, what is your suggestion? "

I wish I had one. Back during the primaries it was "Vote for Fred!" who may have been old but at least had chutzpah and a deep, rumbling voice. Now? I suggest stocking up on guns, dehydrated milk, canned foods and water.

"It was the first time I thought he really was serious about winning."

I think Palin was a better pick than Joe L., who I thought he was going to choose up until the moment she was announced. But she's a risky pick and I'm not sure it's worked out the way he wanted. She would have been a terrific pick for Teh Fred! or even Romney, but McCain? She almost makes him look ANCIENT by contrast.

75 Yes, yes, we're doomed and all.  We have a horrible candidate, like that's a news flash?!?!  Like that wasn't a given when he won the nomination and everyone over the age of 35 said can you say Bob Dole?  And he's been Bob Dole the entire campaign.  Remember waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for Bob to take off the gloves?  Or to at least stop referring to himself in the first person?  Everyone bowed out until Palin put a little juice in the deal, but let's get serious here.

I'm beginning to worry that "Gran" is my mother.  Posting on ASHQ.  It is beyond incomprehensible, but the optimism is truly disturbing.  Please tell me you live in Nebraska, Gran.  I'm serious!

76 Man up you guys. Think of what has happened in the last thirty days. More can happen in the next. Obama isn't an alpha male. He's a wimpy, metro-no sexual used man who happens to have a grandiose gift that has intoxicated the Bush haters in the national media.

The polls lie like the media lies.

Obama still has thirty days to self-destruct. I think he has to do that.

Keep the faith.

78 "He also was cancer afflicted h2u. A cancer that was more likely to be deadly than a fucking melanoma."

Absolutely. But he didn't LOOK ill. McCain does. And that's going to hurt him badly among younger voters. Teh Fred! has also appeared major motion pictures and highly viewed television shows. That exposure would have been amazingly helpful for a GOP candidate, many of whom rarely get a fair shake in the public eye.

McCain was not the right candidate for the GOP to run against Obama. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

Posted by: h2u at October 06, 2008 09:44 PM (gp/if)

79 On a brighter note, although not the least bit awesome, is it even remotely possible that if McCain does actually pound these important points over the next two debates and last 4 weeks (iffy at the most optimistic awesomeness) that the main stream media just may have screwed The One by withholding all of this information until the public becomes aware of it in the closing moments of the campaign and slices like a hammer toward Obama?

Like the last minute Bush DWI charges?  It's a pretty small hope but it would be SO deserving, would it not?

Seriously, Gran, New Jersey?  Iowa?

Seems you drank the MSM Kool Aide.  You bring up age, then extol Fred a short while thereafter?

Reality is that McCain has only slightly worse chances of not surviving the presidency than Obama.  And Obama's never released his medical records, he recently stopped smoking, and did hard drugs in his formative years.

This is a non argument.

98 In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people.

"Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.”

My wife and I worked the Bush campaign hard in Warren County during both his elections. We had the grassroots system down to where it was the envy of all, keeping tabs on all registered voters as to whether they had yet voted. Those who hadn't were picked up and taken to the voting polls. My son stood in line for 3 hours to vote during a heavy rain (all the while the Dems were screaming they alone were being targeted with too few voting booths). The election came down to the 13th hour as the country looked closely at the Warren County returns. Our own Billy Cunningham was on the phone with the RNC all night telling them "not to worry". Warren County brought in the election for Bush.

The two Bush elections drained both my wife and me to the point we became "non-political". Add to this the internal problems with our party inside Ohio, I don't as yet see this "grass roots" movement in my area. However, Palin has brought us back to the fold. I don't know what this says, but I am concerned with the intensity of voter fraud inside Ohio.

I am 63 years old and have never seen the extreme swings in the polls during such short periods of time. What this tells ME is that the typical average American voter is looking for a reason NOT to vote for Obama. IMO, McCain needs to go back in time to bring back whatever it was that got him thru his ordeal during captivity. Whatever it takes should be done. Let's be realistic, Americans just luv trash talk, so let's give it to them.

*this* is exactly why I had trouble getting on board with McCain in the first place.

The reason he won't call out the dems on the sub-prime "crisis" is because he is one of them.  Sure, he tried to do something about it at a time when *something* would have mattered.  But in the end, when faced with a party line vote in committee he shrugged his shoulders and said, "Oh well, if we can't do it 'bipartisan', it just can't be done." He did nothing beyond that to force the issue. He couldn't. He'd blown his political capital with his own party so many times prior to that, he had no chance at getting the level of support he needed no matter how right he was.  Fuck him.

Oh, and the bailout?  It doesn't help any of the 'dead beats' that couldn't pay their mortages.  They forclosed, they lost their homes, and probably everything else.   All it does is allow the banks to hold on to vacant property longer in an effort to start bidding wars on 'short sale' homes, keeping housing prices closer to their inflated 'bubble' prices. Meanwhile, people who had converted their entire life savings into "secure" mortage-backed bonds in order to generate enough income to pay for their own nursing home expenses are getting kicked out onto the street.  *They* arent getting a "bail out" either.

I might add...

Ohio is very conservative, on whole, and we try to maintain our personal lives as private as possible. My 83 year old mother, when telephone polled by Obama's group, told them "it was none of their damn business" who she was voting for.

For years I watched my mother and father rely on the local and network news for all their contact with the outside world. Believing the republicans were going to take their Social Security, Healthcare and savings from them. My mother is frightened by Obama, and I don't believe she is an outlier!

Destroy Polls, and the Media who thinks they are like the quadroblade, facing the KRULL that is the Republican party.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at October 07, 2008 12:57 AM (ul7te)

119 I know I've been sounding like a broken record here lately, but what the hell:

Obama has such huge advantages in this race (the MSM in his pocket, and having the financial crisis fall into his lap which is usually the kiss of death for the incumbent party) that his victory appears all but inevitable.

The flip side of this is that if Obama somehow manages not to win the presidency in spite of said huge advantages, it will be an everlasting embarassment both to Obama himself and to the Democratic Party as a whole. I might add that it would also probably cause that party to begin tearing itself apart in spectacular fashion. I'm guessing it will splinter into at least three factions:

1) Dems still loyal to Obama
2) Dems who voted for Obama but have kicked him to the curb (as, historically, is the Dems' wont with general-election losers) and have begun their search for their next Messiah
3) The pro-Hillary/PUMA crowd

Now I don't know about any of you, but I find this possibility too deliciously juicy to ignore, no matter what the odds against it. Oh, and there's also the small matter of McCain actually being the overall superior candidate for President. So, come Election Day I still fully intend to cast my vote for McCain and Palin. Once that is done, all that's left is to fasten my seat belt and (hopefully) enjoy the ride.
