McCain Speech Thread: Obama "Abetted" Wall Street Corruption, Was Silent on Fannie/Freddie When McCain Tried to Defuse the Bomb

This post previewed his prepared text, but it seemed to me he was riffing a lot in the actual delivered remarks.

The unproductive partisan in me is just hoping at this point that Obama is drinking from a poisoned chalice.

7 I hope there's more than one prong to McCain's new approach. It can't be solely "why Obama sucks," it needs to be "this is why Obama sucks and this is how I'll fix the Democrat's loose shit."

Too late?  Was it too late when the Nazis bombed Pearl Harbor?

It's not too late.  A month is forever in a presidential campaign.  But McCain better get his feces amalgamated pronto and start hammering the crap out of Obama on his ties to this financial mess which was caused, aided and abetted by his party.

AP is ignoring the meat on fannie and freddie and concentrating on the word Liar.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Republican John McCain is calling Democratic rival Barack Obama a liar.

The GOP presidential candidate told a campaign rally: "Sen. Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed."

In some of the harshest language yet, McCain said the campaign comes down to a simple question: Who is the real Barack Obama?

McCain drew the loudest cheers when he said the Democrat has written two memoirs but "he's not exactly an open book."

Trailing in the polls, McCain and his advisers say they will hammer that theme as the campaign heads toward the Nov. 4 election.

shameless.  Will not report on the story

Posted by: unseen at October 06, 2008 04:13 PM (aVGmX)

10 "Is this why the stock market has jumped higher in the last hour?" Probably so. This is one way that McCain can get past the economic problems that have drug him down. If the market sees that he will fight hard every day, and has a chance, it will rally. Otherwise, it will keep tanking in anticipation of an Obama victory, ironically helping to guarantee that victory.

13 More, please.  And, it's necessary in the debate as well.

Question: Senator McCain, what is your opinion on Brazilian deforestation?

Answer: Obama destroyed the mortgage business in America with his affirmative action lending practices.  He did it for campaign money and access to dirty ACORN vote fraud.  Obama should be going to jail along with Dodd and Frank, not the White House.

People like you were saying the war in Iraq was lost before the surge.   Get a life.  People changed their minds in two weeks what possible reason why they won't change them again?  None.  Infomation, attacks on Obama's character's a resurgent Gov Palin.  We only need 5% of Obama supports to switch.  Not a lot .  It is never over until the vote is counted.  And then sometimes like in 2000 not even then.  we have a long hard fight ahead of us.  Saying it is over now is beyond stupid.

15 John McCain needs to put up the VIDEOS at his website of

1. Bush calling for MORE Fannie/Fred regulation
2. Greenspan warning of lack of Fannie Reg and possibility of  total financial meltdown if Fannie/Fred go under
3. McCain calling for more Fannie/Fred regulation
4. Other Repubs calling for more regulation
5. Barney Frank saying  Fannie is on "sound financial footing".
6. Barney F saying in July of this year Fannie is playing such an important role in getting subprime loans, instead of more regulation  "we should roll the dice"
7. The Demo Rep who told a government regulator he was "pissed off" this guy would appear before Congress and tell Congress it wasn't doing its job

During his debate, McCain should reference all of the above, and invite America to verify what he is saying by watching the videos for themselves!

30 It's not about being an Eeyore.  It's about facing up to the fact that we're way behind, and McCain can't make traction fighting in a bad national environment (the economy, Bush) against a media that will stop at nothing to distort his message.  You understand what the ONLY story here will be, once the media is done filtering it?  "Desperate McCain Goes Negative On Obama."  That's all most people will hear.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm still voting for McCain (my vote is meaningless, my state's going blue in the most major way imaginable for Obama).  I'm still encouraging my friends to do so as well.

37 For 6 years, John McCain and George W. Bush could have dismantled Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Right, like the Republicans are going to abolish the Department of Education and the revoke Affirmative Action. Or reform Social Security. Or, I don't know, get a couple of judicial picks in.

I wonder what happened with that? That's right; the minority party has a say-so.

38 One down side of Freddy/Fannie bashing is that tens of thousands of people in Northern Virginia have worked for them at one point in time, and some of those people who might've voted for McCain will be turned off.  But fuck it - it helps everywhere else, and it's also the right thing to do.  Even if McCain tanks people need to hear how the god-awful mess was made, so maybe we can avoid doing it over again as if nothing happened.

41 McCain has given the One, Congressional Democrats and the media 2 weeks to repeatedly lie to the American people.
He's given enough rope for all of them to swing together. Now he and Palin will tell the truth to the electorate and burn it all down.
The media cannot protect anyone (including themselves) from this one. Hell, if that Conservative think tank SNL can call them out, the truth can't be buried very deep.

42

The Obama Effect:  a policy of direct confrontation with the electorate will ensure that a segment of that electorate will keep their views 'close' in all public situations.  These people will vote, but they don't want to be harrassed along the way.

Size of the Obama Effect:  enough to give Obama a 10 point lead in Virginia.  Double digits.

We'll know if McCain has turned things around if he can get the ground game moving again in Missouri, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana and the other swing-states-that-should-not-be-swinging. If we get reliable reports that the base is stoked and organising in these places, then we can go back to dismissing the polls as 2004-bogus rather than fearing they are 2006-predictive.

What McCain can't do, every week, is rise up for the course of a day or two to yell that those danged kids better get off his lawn or else... or else... zzzzz. So far that's the pattern I've been seeing.

If he wants Republicans to support him, he's got to show them that there's someone worth supporting. "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?"

70 Every day, McCain and Palin need to be hammering on Obama on every issue, without mercy, without letup. There is a month to go, a lot can change if they stay on the attack and ignore the media whining about negativity, and ignore the polls. The polls are bullshit, they are bullshit before every national election and they ALWAYS predict a dem victory. Not only that but Zero always overpolls. As bad as the polls look now, this thing is NOT over unless Mac lays down and concedes. The media is trying to suck the life and spirit out of our campaign. We cannot let it happen - we must tell the truth about Zero and we MUST get out and vote.

I suggest everyone frustrated with McCain see the new movie "Appaloosa." Terrific old-school Western. Great gunfights. Men of honor doing what has to be done. Fearless, brave, stoical hard guys. Yeah, Viggo and Harris are lefties, but they don't show that in this movie. Men with badges go after the bad guys, fight Apaches too. Showdowns in dusty streets, shotguns and six-shooters. Great stuff. It may not win an election but you'll sure feel better for having seen it.

I posted this somewhere else, curious do you thing I'm wrong here? Or am I being Captian Obvious?

What I've noticed is that Obama's numbers aren't necessary going up, but McCains are definitley going down. In my opinion this is because McCain is angering the conservative base. The base is SCREAMING for him to fight; to point out the truth on the economy; to point out the questionable associations of Obama. They want him to fight, and he doesn't. He passes every opportunity to point out the truth. He must know that he barely has the conservative vote as it is, that the reason he was up in the polls once upon a time was because he picked Sarah Palin. I believe that the polls reflect this anger. I don't think Obama is going to get anymore votes then he has already, but I do believe that McCain will continue to lose support if he continues down a passive path. What I don't think the polls reflect is that on election day, even though conservatives may not like McCain, they will vote for him because their love for their Country is greater than their anger for McCain.

Our house went nuts while this speech was going on! It was freakin' awesome! It's about time! I am thinking, as painful to endure the last 3-4 wks have been, this is just the right time to bring the fight to the campaign. The general public can only take so much bare knuckles fighting before they turn squeamish, even when it is true and necessary! I think we have just enough time to "tear his playhouse down" to quote a fav old song of mine!

Imagine an ear splitting rebel yell right now! Yeah, that's what I said!

spypeach, for me I was "concerned" about Palin. I didn't see the Gibson interview or the Couric interview; I understand that Gibson screwed up his side but that Palin acted like a spooked deer in the latter. I did see the Biden debate, in which she blurted out McCain talking points at inappropriate moments. Like Jayne in episode Ariel - "We applied the cortical electrodes but could not get a neural response from either patient!"

I don't know where all that happytalk about Palin came from. She had a rough couple weeks and the polls tanked right after. Lucky for her that Biden lied so much and got caught. That said she seems to be offering good advice to McCain now, which improves my confidence in her ability to lead in 2012.

It's no exaggeration for my part to say that my entire faith in democracy is resting on McCain's ability to stand up for his own side. If the Republican standard-bearer doesn't believe in the Republican brand, then for all I'm concerned we already have one-party rule in this country and we may as well validate it by voting Obama.

It's not over until the undecideds are in the voting booth trying to decide whom they'll place their trust; if McCain continues hammering Obama's association to fraudulent Democrats this alone will help undecideds figure out what lever to pull.

85 reposting from the earlier thread:

Even if we lose this election, McCain and the Republicans must prepare the battlefield for the coming depression.  They need to say, loud and on the record, here is how we got to this precipice, here is how to get out (hard as it may be) and the Democrats are NOT going to fix things.

Otherwise, when the recession/depression comes, the Republicans will get blamed even as the Democrats deepen and extend it through their bad policies.

86 Too little, too late.  If fucking SNL beats you to the punch you're toast.  They distilled this mess to something that their audience gets and mocked the Demo's roles in the mess.  Why the hell wasn't Juan doing this five minutes after the bill passed?  The only chance McCain had was to tie Bambi to the do-nothing Congress.  You know, the Congress that has had lower approval ratings than Bush.

I'll admit, I'm one of those "don't worry about national polls" guys.  Now that the state by state polls are showing the same trend maybe I'll have to reconsider my thoughts.  It would be interesting to see some one month out state by state analysis of 2000 and 2004 though.

Hopefully McCain's new strategy of, you know, actually fighting back will get him back in the hunt. But if he's still substantially behind at the end of the month, I want to see him spend the last few days psycho-screaming about the Obama-licking media and urging the electorate to make their vote a referendum on their disgusting behavior. Might be good for a few votes. And, if not, it'll at least be fun to watch.

Now, McCain needs to hit them over this "angry" crap they're trying to paint him with, as if it's a bad thing.

Here's what he should say:

"Obama and his surrogates took to calling me 'angry' yesterday.  Well, my friends, darn right I'm angry!  I'm angry that the Democrats encouraged the predatory lending practices that got us into situation.  I'm angry that Barack Obama did nothing to reign in his congressional allies all the while accepting the second largest amount of lobbyist money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  I'm angry none of them listened to me when I tried to pass legislation to fix the problems.  I'm angry that Americans have lost savings, homes, and jobs due to the irresponsibility of Congress and Wall Street.  And I know you're all angry, and you don't want to take it anymore!"

132 Looking ahead, does anyone think Obama is going to turn around the economy? His massive tax increases can only make a bad situation worse. His push to spend money the government doesn't have will drive up the deficit, increase inflation, devalue the dollar, and make the credit situation worse. He might abandon his promises, but even at that, the economy is unlikely to improve, and he'll be tagged as a do-nothing as the economy burns.

(Either that or a miracle happens and everything's okay... which is not a thing we should wish against.)

But in the most likely scenarios, the Obama's tenure is likely to be sub-Carter in its results. Imagine the disillusionment of millions of Obamunists when their Messiah can not perform. Remember how disillusioned you were when Bush signed off on McCain-Feingold, prescription drugs, nominated Harriet Miers, and pushed for Amnesty. The disillusionment with the One may take a while, but it will be far more intense.

PLEASE forward on to the campaign that they need to call this stupid strawman about Obama being 8 when Ayers and his buddies were killing cops. No one believes that Obama wants to kill police officers and judges. It's about Obama not being truthful regarding his relationship to Ayers, that coyness belying what Obama knew about Ayers, and what the hell they did with the millions of dollars they spent on the CAC and The Woods.

This has to be communicated. McCain must turn this around on them. If Obama didn't know about Ayers, then why not just be up front about Ayers picking him for the chairmanship and how they spent all that money together??? McCain, the guy "so old he doesn't know how to use a computer" needs to take the internet and slap BHO in the face with it.

In the debate, during his closing statement, McCain should  say something along the lines of the following:

“My friends, you are not being told the truth about Barack Obama. You are not being told the truth about his past associations with radical individuals, people who have for years shaped his views and supported his causes. And you are not being told the truth about his culpability in the sub-prime mortgage mess.

You are not being told the truth about a lot of things regarding Barack Obama.

If you own a computer, prior to making your decision for whom to vote, it would be in yours and the nation’s best interest to go on-line, search the following terms and learn:

Obama/Columbia University/lost years.

Obama/Saul Alinsky/ACORN

Obama/William Ayers/Chicago Annenberg Challenge

Obama/William Ayers/Woods Fund

Obama/William Ayers/Chicago youth crime

150 Ace made a point in one of his rants (rants is good, btw) that this blog could be pressured out of business by an Obama administration. I'm curious how many people think that after 4-6 years of Obama, we will still be here at AOS commiserating about politics. I'm betting there will be very few, if any, conservative blogs left by then.  Isn't that scenerio reason enough to get out the vote for McCain?

"So stop this bullshit OODA crap - capishe? "

No.  Stop the 'I need instant gratification and great news about the McCain campaign every ten seconds or I'll pout' crap.

All of you “too little too late” people need to quit reading those goddamned polls over at RCP. They over sample the shit out of Dems every time right up to the election. They don’t mean shit unless they have greater than a 15% margin.

The real problem is we still have a lot of idiots who can not wean themselves off of CBS because they think Edward R. Murrow is coming back or NBC because they still remember Huntly-Brinkly. In other words they are stuck on stooopid and are sucking up the propaganda in double handfuls.

We need to find some way to wean them off of the networks.

Candidates go negative but risk alienating voters

This is another thing that irritates the shit out of me - all the whining by CNN and other types about "negative campaigning."

Let them whine. Obama's negatives are more negative than McCain's negatives.  In a battle of the negatives, GOP wins.

Dems and the MSM have been using psy-ops to poor-mouth the economy for the last 4 years, in order to gain the White House.  They have played patsy with the socialist radicals among them who were making bad loans for the purpose of fomenting civil unrest and preparing the ground for socialism.

How many times in the last 8 years have you heard community activist groups making charges of discriminatory lending practices to lending institutions?  How many times did those charges force a change in lending practices?  How many times were those changes in the direction of more responsible lending?  I guess zero times on that last one!

The Dems and the socialists (BIRM) have used our money to get a bunch of people over their heads into debt in order to create a larger victim class.

Now that they have cynically driven racial tensions backwards in time, created great misery in  the midst of great opportunity, and almost succeeded in crippling the economy for their own pleasure, all they need to do is find someone else to blame for it.  Any guess who that might be, racists?

And if Johnny McCain pushes Barry a bit harder, Barry will lash out and tell us we are all to blame, everyone but him and his buddies that is.

ps. The big secret the MSM is trying to hide:

Obama has a glass jaw.  He can't take the pressure.

He's never had to, so why would he know how?  Why do you think they filter stuff out of their stories about him and practically beat his campaign to air with the counter-spin whenever McCain scores?  Why do you think they wag their fingers and "warn" McCain about the "dangers" of negative campaigning?

Because it will fucking work, that's why, and they are scared shitless McCain might figure that out before it's too late, just like we are scared shitless he might not!

171 McCain can fight, go negative, etc.  Maybe there's a long, outside chance it will work.  But be realistic:  this was always going to be a tough year for the GOP.  Now we have a giant financial meltdown a month from the election.  Rightly or wrongly, the Bush administration is blamed by the public.  That's just the way it works.  (If the economy was gangbusters right now, Bush would get credit whether or he deserved it nor not.)  Perhaps McCain can pull it out, but I think everyone should be prepared for President Obama come January.

The only thing these polls are good for is looking at direction, and that part only holds true if the pollsters are consistent about how they do their polls. A few weeks ago after Palin was nominated the polls were all moving in McCain’s direction. They continued that way until the Palin hatchet jobs by ABC and CBS where they edited the answers to make her look stupid and weak. At that point the polls leveled out.

When the banks started going belly up and Bush asked for this 700 billion bailout the polls reversed and he started losing out again. The question is since BOTH he and Vomit supported the bailout, why did it hit him? Could it be because the MSM relentlessly played the “Repub is at fault for deregulation” Dem talking point?

That has got to be the only rational explanation. If McCain doesn’t beat them with this shit over and over again he WILL lose. I don’t think the Ayers BS will stick, but this shit with the economy will not only stick it will harden up into an impenetrable shield.

This happened before with the conservatives in the House. They allowed the Repubs to take the blame for shutting down the government even though it was Clinton who vetoed the bill.  The Repubs MUST learn how to get the message out despite the MSM.

174 His massive tax increases can only make a bad situation worse.

Yep.  I talked with a few Obie fans yesterday though and they're all still drinking the rhetoric  KoolAid about a tax cut for anyone under $250K/yr.  Yea right.

Even if Obie didn't want to raise taxes, which I think is a crock, congress is going to compel him to do it to pay for all the spending he's promised.  You can't hammer Bush on massive deficits, while running even higher ones yourself.  Even the idiot public would notice that.  Obie is counting on a major military "peace dividend" fleeing Iraq, but even that isn't enough to cover what he's promising.  Clinton already cashed in the real peace dividend to generate his supposedly balanced budget.
