| Conference CallYes, they are now saying the CRA/Fannie/Freddie disaster was one the Democrats lobbied for, one that McCain attempted to avert in 2005, and that McCain's efforts were blocked by a party-line vote. And that, in turn, lead to the 700 billion bailout. "All roads lead back to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac." They are focusing on regulation of Fannie and Freddie -- conceding, implicitly, that sure, Republicans are generally reluctant on regulation, but not on this issue. "This could have been averted." Who's on? Congressman Paul Ryan, (R -- WI)Peter Wallison, AEI Scholar Doug Holtz-Eakin, Senior Policy Adviser, McCain-Palin 2008 Obama's lying, McCain attempted regulation, but Obama, with his silence, abetted Chris Dodd. Moe Lane of Red State: Will Palin be doubling McCain on these issues, or making other attacks? (Answer: Um... unclear. She'll be drawing similar distinctions. Doesn't answer really directly.) My Question: McCain has been reluctant to get into this issue previously. What caused the change? Doug Holtz-Eakin, Senior Policy Adviser, I believe, answers. He disputes the premise that McCain has been reluctant to defend himself, saying the campaign has always been very clear on the roots of the crisis. However, he then notes that Barack Obama has been lying -- or "miscaracterizing" -- McCain's and Obama's respective positions on regulating Fannie and Freddie for the past two weeks, and that it's time for McCain to set the record straight. I throw out a follow up: Will he be as strong in the debate on this issue as you guys are being here? The answer is a non-answer. He'll make his case to the American people, etc., and demand that Obama take a position on the issues, etc. I have hopes. Comments1

Well, Ace, if it was your (and others') screaming, or whether it was a rope-a-dope, or whether it was a source talking out of school, regardless, in any event the result is good, damn good. I'm thinking the final trigger was Obama's new advertisement, taunting that "McCain wants to change the subject off the economy." Either this was what they were waiting for, or it finally hammered home what you have been screaming at them for weeks. The McCain camp, whatever else you can say about it, is not taking our blood pressure into account in their strategies....

There has to be a way forward from here, though. McCain should be squarely on the side of not putting the Fannie-Freddie-Wall Street Humpty Dumpty business model together again... and calling the Democratic leadership on doing exactly that, for it is a major source of money and power for them. Well, technincally all roads lead back to George Soros who has made billions on this fiasco, much of which he is busily funneling back to liberal candidates including Obama, but that one would be too complex to sell as a campaign issue. Soros is the real power behind the throne in Dem politics these days. The DLC is dead, long live socialism. You were right a couple weeks back when you said they built the bomb with a purpose. They wanted a financial meltdown. Most ironic thing is, Soros wouldn't have a tenth the influence he currently enjoys without McCain/Feingold. This is the part that I still don't get. Wasn't it regulation that effectively forced banks to make bad decisions on who to offer loans to? Wasn't this the part McCain was speaking out against? We still don't know if McCain is a political moron (the bad kind of moron), or a political genius-moron (the good kind of moron); he did pick Palin. His team may have concluded, from the beginning, that after President Bush, only scoring runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings was ever going to win the game. I think the seventh inning is tomorrow night.

The answer to the "Why does a Republican want regulation?" issue has to do with Fannie/Freddie's (1) monopolistic power which, itself, (2) springs from its quasi-governmental status. I think most of us agree that monopolies are, generally, bad things in a free-market system. Competition breeds discipline, and F/F had nothing of the former so they developed none of the latter. They were created by the government (though eventually taken private) and then financed, in part, by capital from the government at sweetheart rates available only to them. If the free market cannot police something, then regulation is the only other option we have--it's a poor second option, but it is more than nothing. F/F was immune from the marketplace pressures owing to its government-backed monopolistic position, not regulating it made this situation inevitable. "14 A party-line vote in 2005? Did the Democrats have a majority in the Senate in 2005? I thought they were still in the minority until the seats that were up in '06." No, the GOP held the majority. But when a committee vote is split on an exact party-line vote, that sends about as clear a filibuster signal that the minority party can send. While the GOP had the majority in 2005, they did not have the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster, so McCain's bill was allowed to die. Posted by: Scott at October 06, 2008 03:03 PM (9ypY/) 29

Paul Sarbanes is the Democrat scumbag responsible for this mess. He led the Banking Committee Democrats in 2005 and killed the reform bill. Yet he has mysteriously not been interviewed by a single news outlet since Fannie and Freddie collapsed. I wonder if the Chicago boys have him stuffed in a box somewhere on the South Side. Sarbanes also blocked Republican attempts to increase regulation of subprime mortgages, because the GOP bill called for national standards and preemption of state law. Iowa's liberal Democrat AG Tom Miller convinced Sarbanes and the other Senate Dems that states needed to be able to sue lenders for predatory lending AFTER the fact, and this was more important than actually PREVENTING it. So Countrywide went on its merry way, completely unregulated. Thanks Senator Sarbanes! Posted by: rockmom at October 06, 2008 03:15 PM (iZqUY) 41
Mr Pax:
Yes, it was regulation that forced CRA on banks. But McCain isn't talking about being for that regulation. He was talking about regulating Fanny/Freddy, who were using their special status with the government and their habit of cooking books to explode the sub-prime mess. The CRA started the trouble, but it became a crisis because Fanny/Freddy were buying up sub-primes from anyone, thereby expanding the market dramatically and creating a housing bubble. The CRA did not do this damage itself. It needed the trillions from Fanny and Freddy to make it a crisis. Regulating Fanny and Freddy (because they were seen as being backed by the government) is what McCain is talking about when he says he was for "regulation". If the government should be regulating anything, it should at least be regulating its own intrusion into the private sector. Posted by: Tom at October 06, 2008 03:20 PM (/PwQS) 42

No, but a party line vote on a bill coming out of committee is a sure sign that Democrats will use every procedural hurdle at their expense to make sure that final passage on the bill won't ever see the Senate floor. Posted by: Jay at October 06, 2008 03:22 PM (efvZp) 43
"They are focusing on regulation of Fannie and Freddie -- conceding, implicitly, that sure, Republicans are generally reluctant on regulation, but not on this issue." Of course. Republicans are generally against regulation of the private sector. Fannie and Freddie were government sponsored enterprises that were only nominally private and whose conduct was driving the behavior of the private sector. Had Fannie and Freddie been reigned in, private banks would have had no market incentive to engage in the reckless loans beyond the minimum percentage of their portfolio that the law required. (The law required a minimum percentage of loans to help the poor, but banks did an awful lot of re-fi's to middle class folks as well, using comparably stupid underwriting standards.)In other words, no regulation of the private sector was necessary (though some may have been proposed). Restraining Fannie & Freddie would have gotten rid of a huge market distortion they introduced through the implicit government backing of their products. That is, it would have restored a truer form of free market that was uncorrupted by the incentives created Fannie and Freddie. Posted by: Deuce Geary at October 06, 2008 03:22 PM (wHidE) 44

So John McCain, Obama, and Barney Frank walk into a bar and the bartender asks what each of them will have. John McCain says, "I'll have three shots of tequila. I'll be delivering the straight dope after that!" Obama shakes his head and says, "We've had nothing but tequila shots for the last eight years, tequila we stole from the Mexicans and the Indians, I might add! And after a night of drinking tequila, John, you'll be raping me with your eyes. No, it's time for change. I think I'll have a spritzer with a touch of lime." Barney Franks scoffs, "Tequila and spritzer, damnit, I don't know why I even hang out with you two homos. Barkeep! I'll take a leather mask, a flaming stein of pure vodka and a kick in the balls. Then I want you to wrassle me up a giant ox and I want you to lube me up real good, right up the backside, and have that ox roger me until my insides look like PVC pipe." "Good God, man, why do you want that?" The Barkeep asks, his jaw wide open. Barney Frank says, "What? I thought every good American wanted that? Do we have a problem here?" </rimshot> Posted by: Vercingetorix at October 06, 2008 03:37 PM (N8eC4) 49

From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.' From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.' From Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.' From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.' From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.' And FINALLY the Most Damming one of ALL of them!!! From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' The Republicans-against-regulation thing is a stupid tactic. Conservatives are, to varying degrees, against free-market regulation., but Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were anything but free-market.
Can you imagine a real bank buying the loans that Freddie and Fannie did? And being able to re-sell them? Nothing wrong with wanting to regulate and rein in the government and 'government-sponsored entities'. Posted by: seyont at October 06, 2008 06:10 PM (FcR7P) 57
