| FINALLY: McCain Attacks on Freddie/Fannie in Albequerque AppearanceGlovesare off? Maybe he just isn't going to to after him on this during the debate-- but that to me seems "gloves on". The debate is the second-to-last chance to raise these concerns with 50 million Americans at once. Merely making tough remarks at campaign appearances isn't going to help. But perhaps he's finally heard the alarm bells. This crisis started in our housing market in the form of subprime loans that were pushed on people who could not afford them. Bad mortgages were being backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and it was only a matter of time before a contagion of unsustainable debt began to spread. This corruption was encouraged by Democrats in Congress, and abetted by Senator Obama. Senator Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed. But the truth is I was the one who called at the time for tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could have helped prevent this crisis from happening in the first place. Senator Obama was silent on the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his Democratic allies in Congress opposed every effort to rein them in. As recently as September of last year he said that subprime loans had been, quote, “a good idea.” Well, Senator Obama, that “good idea” has now plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. To hear him talk now, you’d think he’d always opposed the dangerous practices at these institutions. But there is absolutely nothing in his record to suggest he did. He was surely familiar with the people who were creating this problem. The executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have advised him, and he has taken their money for his campaign. He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them. Did he ever talk to the executives at Fannie and Freddie about these reckless loans? Did he ever discuss with them the stronger oversight I proposed? If Senator Obama is such a champion of financial regulation, why didn’t he support these regulations that could have prevented this crisis in the first place? He won’t tell you, but you deserve an answer. Thanks to DrewM and Benson. Blast: As in, getting the word out. Signaling a change. Geraghty. Lane. Morrissey. Again... Not to defend myself at McCain's expense, but.... I've been riding this pony since early last week. And when I say "riding this pony," I don't mean on the blog. I meant sending emails which frequently devolved into ALL CAPS because ALL CAPS IS HOW YOU LET SOMEONE KNOW YOU ARE GOING FUCKING MENTAL WITH THEM ALREADY. In order to boost McCain, I'll pretend I think that this was a rope-a-dope and all scheduled. Comments1

Actually, he's said he won't bring up Ayers and such in the debate, not that he won't "explain" why we're in the current financial crisis. I'm guessing that may well be something germane to the Average Americans in the town hall forum.

If the reports of what McCain said are accurate, the gloves are definitely off. He referred to Obama with "repeat a lie often enough . . . "
Dunno if he'll stay on it, but at least America gets to hear the truth about the Dems from McCain, even if the MSM tries its best to whitewash it. "The debate is the second-to-last chance to raise these concerns with 50 million Americans at once.
Merely making tough remarks at campaign appearances isn't going to help." Agree completely. Campaign events get filtered through the MSM before they reach the wider audience; saying it at the debate will insure that it is heard at least once by the American people before the media mavens have a chance to "fact check" it and "debunk" it pre-emptively. McCain's new strategy should be to turn Obama's wrapping of 8 years of Bush around McCain's neck right back on Obama.

I have told them ten times to simply have mccain take out his 2005 speech, read it, and then announce "I made those remarks on the Senate floor in 2005." At the debate. Someone, I have to say this -- hilarious or not, you don't get it. I've been fighting them on this. I don't want to take credit -- I think they simply finally realized the same truth I did -- but I haven't been *speculating* mccain intended to duck this issue. Read between the lines. I’m actually kind of disappointed to see this.
There’s always a danger in trying to read conservative understanding in the mind of John McCain. He thought (and probably still does) that the press really, really liked him. He thought (and probably still does) that if only he had won in 2000, we could have avoided all of this political rancor and divisiveness.
But, if he’s not completely dim, that history of “duh” politicking could right now be his greatest asset. We all believed it when we read that he was going to ignore the financial “crisis” as a campaign weapon…and why wouldn’t we? I imagine the Obama campaign also believed it…why wouldn’t they?
And let’s face it, a press release or campaign add really isn’t going to have much impact on anyone. The only place where real unfiltered impact is going to be felt is in the debates, and a forceful argument made there not only puts it in the mind of the audience (hopefully along with the image of a blindsided, stutter-stammering Obama, complete with a warm, liquid, tingling running down his leg), it forces the media to speak to it in order to avoid being judged as morons, which is a far greater fear for them than being exposed as biased.
In case anybody missed my meaning – I was hoping McCain was setting a debate trap. Posted by: Stu2 at October 06, 2008 02:33 PM (R5Yg3) Posted by: mpur at October 06, 2008 02:34 PM (BotaL) 34

Subprime is another way of saying risky. I hate to admit being such a financial retard, but I actually did not know that. The use of "prime" in a financial context made me think of prime interest rate. I assumed a "subprime" loan was one made at lower than the usual interest rate. When I learned that it means literally subprime, as in not very fucking good, the top of my head blew off. Okay, I'm a moron. But I bet I'm not the only moron out there who didn't know that. Oh...and one other thing that’s being portrayed as a major political blunder…publicly giving up the campaign in Michigan. This just might be genius.
Winning Michigan would be huge in this election, and as a resident there, I believe it’s possible, especially with a bottom-of-the-ticket family that seems to have so much in common with many of our populous.
Sarah Palin immediately came out against the plan to pull out of here, and at least in my office, it resonated. I think that if, say a week from now, McCain came out in a very public way and said that Palin had been working on him relentlessly until she finally said, ‘It’s not just a matter of reallocating resources, we’re abandoning our friends’, and that that changed his mind and he told her to go for it.
That’s how we win Michigan…that’s how we win the election. Posted by: Stu2 at October 06, 2008 02:39 PM (R5Yg3) Posted by: thirteen28 at October 06, 2008 02:39 PM (s8N54) 46

I doubt this will get much media play and what it does get will be heavily filtered by the MSM. McCain MUST hit Obama hard with this in the debate. He also needs Sarah Palin to start talking relentlessly about this. The intense public fascination with her gives her the power to make this a topic of national discussion no matter how much the MSM hates having hockey mom drag them by the nose into it. If McCain doesn't start fully using Palin's star power to drive the national discussion toward uncovering the real Obama and the Democrats' role in the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac fiasco then he deserves to lose. These things need to be tied around Obama like an anchor. I think Palin herself understands this but is not in a position to call the shots. She lacks McCain's experience on the national stage but has much better political instincts about what motivates voters. Posted by: Randy R at October 06, 2008 03:01 PM (A9g/U) 65

Posted by: JB at October 06, 2008 03:27 PM (qxc7J) 76
Polynikes: since I'm of the opinion that any "undecided voter" still in existence at this point of time is from that segment of society that has the mental acumen of a saucer of cat food, I think focusing on those issues will be a mistake. "Tax hikes" can be distorted by Democrats into "tax those rich fat cats," social programs will be seen as "free stuff for all!" and anti-drilling will be pushed as "we care about the environment and cute furry animals as opposed to the likes of Sarah Palin who clubs baby polar bears for dinner and wants to cover Alaska in ugly, smelly black oil."
McCain should stick with the big, loud issues like "who the hell's fault it is we've lost all that money and our economy's going down the shitter?" and "Who hangs out with unrepentant terrorists and has the audacity, not of hope, but to run for president during a time when we are at war with people who think like his friends?" Not that I think anything can decide the election at this stage of the game, it's a case of how big is the percentage of people in the US who are on one side or the other, but it is refreshing to see that McCain is at least aware of the same things we are. I agree with you Andrea in that the undecideds are not politically savy. The undecideds I mainly picture are the skilled blue collar workers, union and non union who make a fairly large wage. They are the key to this election.

McCain should say,"My friends, many of you are going through rough financial times. My opponent continually says Bush is responsible for the worst economic presidency ever. Well, my friends, perhaps you need to ask yourselves AND MY FRIENDS ACROSS THE AISLE, because the last eight years have been VERY, VERY, GOOD to them financially. And then hold up everyones tax returns!!!!

Sen. Mccain needs to hit hard like that at tomorrow night's debate. Besides, a lot of voters don't care about the Obama Ayers connection. They are more concerned about their pocket book and the current status of the economy. Question. The Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, bail out and the financial crisis, why now? Electionn 2008. How come this situation didn't happen last year or in 2009? Posted by: Lee Ann at October 06, 2008 04:09 PM (GtDQq) 85
Lee Ann: it's been building for more than a year. That famous YouTube video where Jim Cramer totally lost his shit live on the air was August 1, 2007.
Posted by: INCITEmarsh at October 06, 2008 04:25 PM (ULsz9) 86
He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them. I think two of Obama's teeth just flew out. Posted by: adolfo_velasquez at October 06, 2008 04:26 PM (+99gk) 87
It's Albuquerque with a U not an E, minor issue however the current spelling makes your post look like a joke and obviously it is not a joke.
Posted by: syn at October 06, 2008 04:26 PM (U/PTC) 88
It is about time McCain starts fighting. So many people have been waiting for this. I hope he does not back down from this issue, and does not let up until November 4th. This is just ONE of the many problems that Obama has- a lot of people don't know why they SHOULDN'T vote for Obama- they need a reason to not to, and this is, along with Palin calling Obama out on the people he keeps company with, is just what they need to do. I really hope more people start to realize the associations and decisions that Obama has made, makes him unqualified to be president. Someone is to blame for this mess, and it isn't McCain or Republicans- all the evidence is out there- this is a golden chance for McCain to pin the *responsibility* for this on the Democrats & Obama- right where it belongs. Posted by: Heather at October 06, 2008 04:28 PM (dhMYW) 89
I'm feeling better now - or at least, a little less worried. Hopefully by not doing a lot until now they've got a whole bunch of cash to get the message everywhere, all the time. Which also means letting Palin be in front of every camera if possible as the....attack dog. Feels like a sprint now...less than 30 days to go. Posted by: Francase at October 06, 2008 04:47 PM (nrLPb) 90
McCain is one of the clueless old boys. Better to bury him and his kid and hope Obama pushes for a People's Paradise. After two years of his socialism the country will be finished with Leftism for ten years.
McCain doesn't understand that trying to be Teddy Roosevelt today is at best a bad joke since we aren't the same nation that we were, nor is McCain a Teddy. Posted by: Thomas Jackson at October 06, 2008 05:20 PM (5ySCu) 91
Rope-a-dope is for the early rounds.
We're coming into the 12th now though and the clock is winding down quickly on early voting states. Early votes == votes you can NEVER change, even if was subsequently revealed that Obie was a child molesting serial killer who beats his wife. Posted by: Purple Avenger at October 06, 2008 05:32 PM (Xl9pj) 92
The thing is, in this news environment, if you do something too early, people forget it and it doesn't have any impact. Remember when the REverend Wright stuff came out? Wow, that will kill his campaign, he's doomed... now who remembers Wright? If you bring it up people say "yeah yeah, that's old stuff" It was six months ago and people say it's old now. You can't launch things too early, you have to get to them in a timely manner.
I think Senator McCain is a lousy choice for president and I won't be voting for the chump, but he's a very smart campaigner and he's been at this a very long time. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 06, 2008 05:42 PM (0+Ggj) 93

McCain should draw a picture of Obama humping Fannie and Freddie and ACORN for the viewers of the debate--with Ayers and Dohrn watching and applauding.
THEN he should draw a picture of Fannie and Freddie doing the rear-assault on the American taxpayer.
THEN he should mention the endorsements Obama got from Hizbollah, Castro, and the Dear Leader of North Korea.
It would be memorable--and it would stick.

As happy as this turn of events is I still wonder about the actual campaign schedule. Senator Obama has been working Virgina, North Carolina and Florida hard and our canidate has been seen in Iowa and New Mexico. It would be nice if the last month of the campaign that our canidate would work the States hard and turn Governor Palin loose to speak to Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Neal Boortz and Glen Beck, because the Liberals listen to them as well as the moderates and Conservatives. (Hint: Sen. McCain needs to visit the Commonwealth of Virginia and the great States of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and get back to Michigan. That Michigan pullout was a mistake. Here is hoping to an aggresive October and and a win in November. Posted by: Broomy at October 06, 2008 07:22 PM (KpNUD) 99
