| Patterico: It's Over, Because the McCain Camp Refuses to Fight Back on Fannie, Freddie, and CRAAs that US News blog post said, the McCain camp thinks it's "too complicated" to explain the current crisis to the American people, so they're going to let Barack Obama claim it was all the Republicans' and McCain's fault. I said McCain would turn towards these topics after the bailout passed. I appear to have been very wrong. The McCain camp is choosing a frankly insane strategy of allowing Obama to destroy him every day without a peep of objection. What will they run on? Character, patriotism.CommentsPosted by: someone at October 06, 2008 12:09 PM (2z2WN) 2
I think McCain thinks that enough House and Senate Republicans will hit this theme along with the 527s. He's wrong. He could help himself and a lot of Congressional candidates.

If this is true, McCain doesn't deserve to be President. He lacks the judgment.

Don't get me wrong - I think McCain will strike on this soon.
If he doesn't, he deserves to lose. The issue is very clear, and can be communicated to the American people. Failure to do that is pretty close to dereliction of duty, at this point. Posted by: grognard at October 06, 2008 12:13 PM (XiVKO) 9
I sort of said the same thing when this all started. By W and Maverick not going on the all out offensive when this broke, W managed to show the most spectacular failure of leadership of his administration because not only does HE get the blame, but McCain shares in the blame, AND the story is now that free markets are bad and government intervention in the economy is the norm.
Maverick, on the other hand, merely lost the presidency by not talking about the actual events. And really, Obama and McCain agree on so much anyway, and Obama would have to try extra hard to lose the war on terror, that America was going to become Amerixco either way. So, great job, you idiots who voted for Maverick in the primaries (whoever you are, I haven't met one yet). And great job W, for turning the other cheek. And bravo Maverick, way to fight for me by letting yourself get rolled. Posted by: joeindc44 at October 06, 2008 12:13 PM (QxSug) 10

We'll know whether we have a fighting chance after the debate tomorrow night at 'someone' points out. If he hammers Obama and the Dems with Freddie/Fannie tomorrow night, we'll know if we have a fighting chance. Hell, Saturday Night Live brought it up in a skit from what I've heard (haven't seen it myself, though) so is SNL doesn't think it's too complicated, why should the McCain camp. Posted by: Lee at October 06, 2008 12:16 PM (Xb3DR) 14
the McCain camp thinks it's "too complicated" to explain the current crisis to the American people I fail to see why it's that complicated. Republicans (at least some Republicans) have made several warnings throughout the past decade or so about Fannie and Freddie and suggested reforms, while the Democrats have repeatedly ignored the warnings and opposed any reforms, saying everything was fine. Seems pretty clear-cut to me. All he needs is a campaign commercial with Democrats talking about Fannie and Freddie over the years. Their comments largely speak for themselves. Posted by: Jason at October 06, 2008 12:17 PM (sV0Yw) 15
I'm in agreement with a few others here in that if he doesn't move on this during the debate *then* we can start preparing for Euro-style socialism writ large for the next 4-8 years simply because the average American really is a complete ignoramus (and it gives me no pleasure to say it).

It's pretty clear that Republicans (with the possible exception of Newt) learned nothing from Reagan. When we fight, when we call them out on their bullshit and identify them for what they are, we win. When we play the media game, we lose.

Obama's going Keating Five? ('Bout time, really). I think McCain will go Fannie Mae. He's already doing it in videos, isn't he? (That's a real question...I can't watch YouTube from work, but it looked like his campaign is going there). My faith in McCain approaches zero, but that's up from where it was...six weeks ago. McCain isn't defending the GOP in any fashion, ceding the endless bashing of the Party he represents.
His Campaign even refuses to mention the "Democrat Party" by name, even as Congress led by Pelosi and Reid is at an all time low approval rating. Here is the paraphrased response from friends and family that I consider to be extremely bright, and to whom I have offered all the evidence about the genesis of this crisis:
" I haven't really researched this, despite everything you have sent me. This crisis was caused by greed. Greed is non-partisan. Bush was president, so he naturally deserves the most blame. At worst, responsibility must be shared. It serves no purpose to point fingers (when the fingers are being pointed at Democrats)." It's not too complicated. It is too scary. The average citizen doesn't want to face the fact that Democrats could be so abominably bad at the economy, because the alternative is that the greedy Republicans will get back in control. And given the Republican's recent spendthrift and unethical ways, I guess I can see their point just a bit. It is frightening though, to see otherwise intelligent and rational people push their heads so deeply in the sand. The fight has to be made though, if McCain wants to win. If my friends/family are already leaning Dem, and it's simply a choice between "economy aside, who delivers the best promises to me", even then, McCain would have a chance. But if McCain truly allows this crisis to be labeled "Republican" without a fight, he will lose in a romp. And believe you me, I will applaud his spectacular defeat from the depths of my bigoted, conservative soul. Posted by: krakatoa at October 06, 2008 12:28 PM (/FUhT) 28

The McCain campaign will be accused of all the tactics and
activities that he is so reluctant to use whether he uses them or not.
Hell, they already have been.
There’s nothing for McCain to gain now by staying on the McCain high horse. It’s time to go on the offensive and lay blame for the Fannie Mae debacle where it belongs. It’s not complicated and there’s plenty of video to play. It’s a story with legs and it’s on everyone’s minds. He needs to take it to Obama on Tuesday. But I don’t think he will. We already know he’d rather lose an election than lose a war. Sometimes it seems he’d rather lose an election than lose his senatorialness. McCain is behind in just about every battleground state plus North
Carolina and the trend is downward. He needs to reverse the trend in a
big way and be in a position to take states from Obama. Right now, he’s
struggling to hang on to base states. There’s four weeks left. The
history of presidential candidates who are behind at this point in the
election process is not on McCain’s side. Posted by: SlaveDog at October 06, 2008 12:30 PM (H6Jyg) 30

But I will say, by telegraphing his personal attack so early, McCain baited the Obama camp to play the Keating card way too early. I thought for sure we wouldn't hear Keating until maybe seven days out. It's been played, and McCain now has a month now to get his story out, to do a bit of political jujitsu concerning lessons learned and how he became all mavericky after that, etc, etc. Posted by: Lee at October 06, 2008 12:30 PM (Xb3DR) 31

Also, we have business cycles on their end and normal crisis might've occured. If it goes duble down into big depression - you may say hello to new demo-totalitarian state/s on the other side of the pond. It's like a B class movie trailer: "Market economy is on trial for crimes it did not commit, the real bad guy behind it - goverment - is key witness in the case." What the hell do you people want? John McCain has mentioned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in every speech he has given since the meltdown. He put out TWO TV ads featuring Jim Johnson and Frank Raines, and they showed here in PA. Then we got a full day of MSM backlash because the Raines ad is racist. The NRCC ad on the Dems in Congress is showing here in PA. I've seen McCain surrogates and spokespeople on several shows talking about Fannie and Freddie, especially on the business channels like CNBC and Bloomberg. I'm really sorry that Patrick Frey is not seeing these ads on TV in CALIFORNIA while he is watching South Park, or reading anything about McCain's speeches in the LOS ANGELES TIMES. I'm sick of his childish rants that becaue the most liberal goddamn paper in America refuses to cover what McCain is doing and saying, that means McCain is not doing or saying anything. What the fuck is McCain supposed to do, run naked in the street with "Fannie Mae = Democrats" painted on his ass? Start demanding that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd resign? What good would that do? Guess what, people. Our financial system has just fallen apart and it happened on George Bush's watch. If I've just lost my life savings in Lehman Brothers, or can't get a loan now to support my business, I really do not care that Barney Frank was fucking some dude at Fannie Mae 10 years ago.

But Jim Downey isn't able to carry this message. Only McCain is. Not even Palin can really carry it, as she wasn't present in DC when all this was happening. John McCain was, and could explain it to America, but chooses not to. This, I disagree with. The truth is the truth, no matter who is saying it. It may be up to McCain to carry this message if he wants to win the WH. However, Republicans absolutely cannot sit around and wait for McCain to make the case, because if we are passive and let the narrative sink in that Republicans are at fault and Democrats are innocent, the damage to our brand will be far greater than a mere McCain loss. Everybody on our side needs to be making the case against the Democrats on Fannie/Freddie and their refusal to reign them in, forcefully, consistenly, and repeatedly. Let McCain sink or swim on his own willingness to make the case, but let's not wait for him. If we do, we deserve the same fate as he will likely face, all for our own refusal to fight back while waiting for him to do the work we should be doing ourselves.

This is why McCain can't let Obama control the economy narrative. (There were no earmarks in the bailout bill). If McCain doesn't lay blame where it belongs and make the Fannie and Freddie story uncomplicated (and it isn't complicated, damn it), he will continue to sink like the DJIA is sinking right now. Waiting until the bailout kerfuffle goes away will be fatal. There's going to be nothing but bad economic news from now until election day, all of it to the detriment of McCain. David Asman had an excellent program on Fox News last night explaining the sub-prime mortgage market and the roles of ACORN, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Franklin Raines, Jim Johnson, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and the attempts at reigning in the rampant abuse by President Bush and Senator McCain and the previous Treasury Secretary, John Snow, among other Republicans. He also showed footage of the few hearings that were held and showed Democrats on tape denying a problem with sub-prime mortgages and accusing skeptics of racism. They showed how the mortgages were bundled and how they were sold and rebundled and sold to various investment groups including insurance companies and pension funds. They showed who profited and how much they profited and who got screwed (taxpayers). Of course, I couldn't fucking understand it, I only have a high school education. It seems MSM attention and adulation is the life blood of McCain. He has been effectively moulded by the MSM. Can anyone remember what he was prior to his role as the Maverick. I don't believe McCain ever held any conservative principles. What he posseses is an enormous ego that needed to be stroked and the MSM was right there to show him the way. McCain really found his voice after he lost the 2001 Republician nomination to Bush and in his bitterness started his long war against his own party. The MSM found a useful tool to attack the Republicians and gave him all the glowing write-ups and TV appearances McCain craves. A examination of subsequent McCain actions is revealing, McCain/Feingold, Gang of 14, Gitmo prisoner rights, etc. and all along the way the MSM held his hand and by stroking his ego, reinforces his behavior. The guy is brought and paid for, and all for a few TV appearances. Once he's been programed the mere threat of losing all that attention is enough to neutralize McCain. Add a few negative media stories and he's effectively folded. He is not fighting back because he does not want to lose his MSM "friends". , there really are not any other principles guiding his actions. What a pathetic old fool. Worse, he's bringing up Ayers and Wright again. Do I think Ayers and Wright are important? Of course. But undecided voters don't. They want someone who will fix the economy, or at least promise to fix the economy, and everything else is secondary. To them, Wright is an old issue and Ayers is a non-issue. Camp McCain lost the weekend news cycle because of their statement that they were "turning the page" on the bailout . . . then going back to shit that was dead and buried (in the minds of most impartial observers) in the spring. Obama ridiculed them in their weekend speeches for "turning the page" on the economy — that's not what the GOP said, but who's going to call him on it? — and going back to old shit because they're desperate. You can create a broader context of saying that virtually everyone Obama chooses to associate with is a fucking crook, from Ayers and Wright to Fannie and Freddie. That's reminding voters of the old shit without slamming it in their faces. If McCain doesn't hit back on Fannie and Freddie, he'll lose. If he can combine them with what we know about Obama's previous political connection to create a long uninterrupted narrative, he can win. But if he only uses Ayers and Wright without them, he'll lose BIG. He'll look like a bitter old man who only has a long history of character and patriotism. How'd that work out for Bob Dole? Dude, Fox News spent an HOUR trying to explain this, and still left out big chunks of the story. You think John McCain can do it in a 30-second ad? You have Barney Frank, a guy the media loves, on every channel repeating that he got the GSE reform bill passed after the Republicans had control for 12 years and did nothing. It's REALLY hard to explain to people that yes, Republicans were in control but they didn't have 60 votes in the Senate to get a bill passed. Even the Fox show got that wrong. If the Bush Administration was that worried about Fannie and Freddie, why did they not start trying to attach that reform bill to everything? Why did McCain and his cosponsors just let that bill die in 2005? Believe me, I was lobbying on this thing for 4 years and we were all just as frustrated with the Republicans as we were with the Democrats.

If Patterico doesn't see the commercial, that's because it's not running nationwide. They didn't happen, either. He has two more chances to speak without a media filter. A comment at Patterico's suggested that he should wait until the last few minutes of the final debate. Well, that's too fucking long. He can't forfeit the first five bullets in the revolver. Also, if he doesn't stop the bleeding, he'll lose five more points and fifty more electoral votes until then, and it will be too late to get them back. If he doesn't hit back in the next debate, he's fucked. Posted by: INCITEmarsh at October 06, 2008 01:28 PM (ULsz9) 67
If McCain doesn't hit Obama tomorrow night on WHY the Freddie/Fannie debacle helped launch this crisis, WHO was behind it, and HOW insane liberal social engineering is ultimately to blame, I and a couple million others will simply go limp and let the inevitable happen. No manning phone banks. No reading blood-pressure spiking blogs like Ace. No more watching talking heads patiently "explain things" to us poor benighted folk on TV. No working to "preserve the GOP brand" --- WHAT brand? Why fight for your candidate and what you believe in, when your candidate doesn't believe in what you do, and won't even fight? As Groundskeeper Wille on "the Simpsons" would lament: Wot's za yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse?

That SNL video should be forwarded to everybody we all know. http://www.hulu.com/watch/37758/saturday-night-live-c-span-bailout There it is for easy use, copy and paste that shit on any email to anybody who needs this fuck-fest explained in clear simple, easy to watch terms. At this point, I have no faith in McCain's ability to make a case for fluffy fucking kittens, nevermind fiscal discipline and hard choices overseas. If I had any thought that Obama would give the country back in four years I'd say let him govern over this shit pile and get his ass handed to him by a then ready for prime time Palin or Jindal. But we know that four years of Obama youth squads, propagandist media control, control of election mechanisms and the financial whip will make that nearly impossible. McCain will not win this for himself - deservedly so. He is only a maverick in the sense that he's willing to fuck us over for the praise of a Democrat. But Obama and the congressional red army are too dangerous to fuck with so we have to get McCain / Palin elected, whether McCain helps or not. Spread the vid. Unfortunately it's the best we've got - a lot better than that interminable "Money for Nothing" vid. The only people watching that already know what's up. Posted by: Ronsonic at October 06, 2008 01:37 PM (ywSvi) 69
The idea that this is too difficult to explain is madness.
Here, let me give it a shot. For years, Democrats and radical community organizers have forced banks to make millions of loans to people who couldn't afford them. Three years ago, John McCain fought against this bad idea, but Democrats refused to enact common-sense regulations Now? Those bad loans just cost taxpayers $700 Billion. That's more than $2,000 for every person in America. We just can't afford more of Barack Obama's bad ideas. How hard was that? If McCain's campaign truly can't make this case, or if McCain chooses not to make it, he doesn't deserve to win. Posted by: The Guvnah at October 06, 2008 01:52 PM (Rg8DN) 70
Unfortunately, that would require McCain to choke on this first point:
For years, Democrats and radical community organizers have forced banks to make millions of loans to people who couldn't afford them. Making that point would keep him from making his case that it's all about Wall Street GREEEEEEEEEEEEEDD! Posted by: The Guvnah at October 06, 2008 01:54 PM (Rg8DN) 71
Do I think Ayers and Wright are important? Of course. But undecided voters don't. They want someone who will fix the economy, or at least promise to fix the economy, and everything else is secondary. To them, Wright is an old issue and Ayers is a non-issue. While I agree the economy is an important issue, McCain still needs to hit Obama on his shady associations like this, hard and often. Those are a direct reflection of Obama's character, and therefore his leadership. And if he is found wanting in those areas, then his ability to soothe a nervous economy also has to come into question. Hit independent voters with that message hard and often enough, and some of them are going to start wondering.
Posted by: thirteen28 at October 06, 2008 01:55 PM (s8N54) 72
No they won't, because Obama has an easy parry and counterattack. How did all those character problems not stick to Clinton in '96? He appeared to have "fixed" the "recession," and they won. Economy is Issue #1. Running on Ayers and Wright only is worse than just forfeiting Issue #1, it makes the GOP look so dumb because they're ignoring it that nobody will trust THEM to have a good handle on the problems in the world. FM + FM + JW + WA = win FM + FM = maybe JW + WA = lose Posted by: INCITEmarsh at October 06, 2008 02:18 PM (ULsz9) 73
Hey, seriously, I'm looking for feedback on the ads from RightChange.com here: Take a look (they're all short 15-second spots). What do you think of them, do they make the case McCain isn't making or not??
Posted by: Average Jen at October 06, 2008 03:03 PM (OINAg) 74
Are you all this fucking stupid? You really are going to simplify the entire issue down to "poor people couldn't afford their house." It WASNT POOR PEOPLE. It was middle class Americans, Americans who all had jobs. They just got greedy, just like Wall St. Everyone decided they wanted a $300k house instead of the $200k house that they could afford. So they took out a huge ass loan, and figured that their property values would just continue to appreciate. It didn't work out that way.

what 52 said. =====I would add: McEgo was SET UP by Obama + his ''friends'' in the Senate to walk into the bailout trap, as the perfect scapegoat. Dirty Hairball insisted McC had to get personally involved, then stonewalled him, then booted him out the door contemptuously, like a syphilitic maid caught stealing the silverware. ====Obama had. to. know, this was gonna go down. He was coyly fluttering his fan and dropping his hanky for a reason. -----Can't help thinking that Romney wouldn't have fallen for this ruse, and he'd be slicing like a fuckin' hammer on this eco. blame game.
