I really do think that the truth will come out that Democratic social engineering caused this current lending crisis. More and more, people in the "mainstream" are starting to say: "Maybe Barney Frank had something to do with this?" Posted by: dan-O at October 03, 2008 01:41 PM (teb/C) 5

The problem that Republicans face in trying to "sell" the idea that Democratic social engineering caused this is that the economic crisis is so epic in proportion.
To blame Democrats (or Republicans) for a blip here or there in the stock market can easily be bandied about. But it is human nature to not want to believe that an error in judgment made by a person or group of persons can cause such a catastrophic event. And I'm not only talking about convincing Dems here, I'm saying people in general are not going to be willing to accept this. This same phenomena can be observed in a different group of people: holocaust deniers. Posted by: dan-O at October 03, 2008 01:46 PM (teb/C) 8

A Joe Biden writes,
It's evidence of the fact that the economic policies of the last eight years have been the worst economic policies we've ever had. As a consequence, you've seen what's happened on Wall Street. If you need any more proof positive of how bad the economic theories have been, this excessive deregulation, the failure to oversee what was going on, letting Wall Street run wild, I don't think you needed any more evidence than what you see now. Just so. Yet Palin lies, again, in service of the most dishonest, dishonorable and gobsmackingly despicable campaign in American history. Relying, no less, on internet rumors regarding the content of newspapers she does not even read.Eagleton, anyone? And where are her gynecological records? No time left to make this stick. Wright, Ayers and Rezco are easy targets to exploit. Fannie/Freddie can't be explained in a soundbite. "Godd--n America" "Didn't do enough in regards to bombing" "This is not the Tony Rezco I thought I knew" Those are easy and set up for the 30 sec commercial. @J.J. Sefton:
I understand that it is more than just Barney Frank. But as far as "naming names" goes, there are only really a dozen or so. What these people are, though, are agents of leftist change. Most people on the right understand this. But in making a case, there are lots of people that will be hesitant to believe that the reckless actions of a few people have caused such a huge meltdown. There is something in human nature that makes people not want to believe that a few people can cause such evil in the world. In this case, the financial meltdown. I'm not saying it's hopeless, or that the case shouldn't be made, or anything like that. I'm just saying it's an uphill battle for us. Posted by: dan-O at October 03, 2008 02:28 PM (teb/C) 51

"...Democratic social engineering caused this current lending crisis." Truer words were never spoken, but Democrats are always trying this shit. I am not excusing it, but I want to point out that what usually protects us against these socialists is Republican / conservative pressure and leadership against it. But that did not happen this time because the media has emasculated the Bush administration, and allowed the exercise of power by Republicans to be defined as a criminal offense unless it meets the approval of the Dems and the media. We now have a three-party system, Republicans, Democrats, and Media. The last two have formed a coalition to marginalize the first. Posted by: sherlock at October 03, 2008 02:32 PM (ojW85) 53

A little quiz 1. How many times in the the last oh, 10 years, have you heard or read about some lending institution being criticized for discriminating against minorities in lending by "community organizers" and/or "progressive groups"? 2. How many of those times did the pressure tactics make the lender change their policies, or perhaps even subjected to a consent decree forcing them to. 3. How many of those changes in lending policies were in the direction of more financially secure and responsible lending practices? My answers: 1. Shitloads. 2. Most of them. 3. Zero. ps. Before someone calls me a racist, I'll point out that the lenders were not disciminating against minorities, they were being "discriminating" about not loaning money to people who could not afford the debt. The race card was played by the community organizing community to make their work of getting people into difficulties easier. And getting people into trouble makes them listen to you when you tell them it is someone else's fault. Posted by: sherlock at October 03, 2008 02:46 PM (ojW85) 60
This idea that "it's the fault of both sides" is pretty annoying. Sure, the Republicans didn't fight stronger for more oversight, but that's like blaming the cops for not being there to prevent a bank robbery.
How can anyone blame the people who wanted more oversight but were blocked every step of the way by the ones who were protecting and defending this debacle? Posted by: wiserbud at October 03, 2008 02:48 PM (KJexA) 61

Yeah, that’s the other story from the Lames, Repugs have had control for xxx years and they didn’t stop {us} from killing the economy and destroying the U.S.; its their fault. Har, har, har
The Lames promised their voters they were going to cut and run if they got control of congress. Well, they got “control” of congress and we are still in Iraq. THEY DID NOT GET 60 VOTES IN THE SENATE. So according to the arcane rules in the Senate they can’t do a damn thing the Repugs don’t allow them to do, thanks to McCain and the gang. We didn’t get any judges, but they don’t get to chicken out.
Instead what we get is a triumph of the turds. 25 billion to auto makers, 630 billion to the Fed (with some help from Europe), 700 billion for this latest shit sandwich. As Everett Dirksen would say, pretty soon we’ll be talking about some real money. Here I am forced to drink cheap shit R&R on my front porch this afternoon while they give away 700 billion dollars. Say that again Jed; what kind of money is that they are going to pay us with? “billion dollars”. Yeah, we got slickered. Posted by: Vic at October 03, 2008 03:14 PM (b1ysY) 66

I just read over at Hot Air that McCain isn't going to bring up Fannie/Freddie, CRA, Acorn etc because he doesn't want to look "racist". If that is the case, he deserves to lose. At this rate he will most likely lose 40 states and drag the Republican ticket down far enough to make impossible filibusters in the Senate and perhaps give the Dem's veto proof majorities in both houses (not that they'll need it mind you). Oh, and he'll still be called a racist for even daring to run against the One. How did we wind up with this sh!t sandwhich as the "Republican" nominee. Oh yeah, I remember. He is now and always was pro-life. What we couldn't do with a coherent conservative communicator to use the bully pulpit of this presidential campaign to let the public know how the hell we got here. Well my friends what we got was a marble-mouthed, big-government moderate with a burning, all encompassing desire to be liked by liberals and the MSM. Sweet. Does anyone believe that either Rudy or Mitt would be sitting on the Fannie/Freddie/Acorn/Obama axis in order to avoid getting called a racist? Enjoy the descent into socialism, social conservative purists. Oh, and you've done nothing at all to advance your pro-life agenda. In fact say hello to mandatory government funding of abortions and the repeal of all restrictions thereon. As we speak Planned Parenthood is drafting legislation forcing you to pay for the millions of abortions they'll be performing over the next eight years minimum. And yes, many of them will be late term because that's going to be legal as well. You'll be lucky if there isn't a Department of Abortion Rights by the time Obama leaves office. But hey, McCain was always pro-life so you've got that going for you. Sorry about the rant but if McCain isn't willing to tell the American people what really happened they are going to fall back on the MSM to tell them and we know how that's going to go down. I live out here in the hinterlands between the coasts and believe me the people I know are looking to punish someone over this. They could be persuaded if someone high-profile enough made the case it was the Dem's who are responsible. If not they'll look to the MSM and then it'll be off with their heads as regards the Republican Party. Posted by: Big E at October 03, 2008 03:20 PM (uw1/g) 69

From my limited understanding of the danger embedded within today's Treasury Dept. taxing bill that passed and will become law, the Sec.Treasurer is now granted more powers than the Constitution would ever permit over the three branches of the Constitutional government, destabilizing the balance of powers.
From the NYTimes, Sept. 11, 2003, "New Agency Proposed To Oversee Freddy Mac and Fannie Mae," by Stephen Labaton who wrote concerning the Bush administration having proposed the most significant regulatory overhaul of the housing finance industry since the 1980's Keating scandal and thrift/savings industry bail-out. Bush proposed a new agency within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae...(emphasis mine) Is the increased power that Bush/Paulson pushed and got today for the Treasury Sec. the same basically as what Bush pushed for and didn't get in 2003 (Greenspan era)? Besides legislators typical unwillingness to apply brakes to popular projects in play, is another reason Bush didn't get support from the Republican majority in 2003 because Bush was asking for bigger government rather than using the real tools already in hand to curb the corruption that was going on? My first post here so here it goes. What BOR did to B. Frank was what we need more of in this country. Frank has never been challeneged by the MSM. He got caught in his own world of lies and deceit and BOR nailed him for it. When you get caught with your hand in cookie jar you need to get slapped and BOR did the right thing. Same thing as Colmes getting cuffed by Morris last night, well deserved. All of this PC BS has allowed the truth to buried by just pointing a finger at someone and calling them something that is consdiered offense by PC police. I hear people talking about factcheck, snopes and others as if they are the final arbitor of what is the truth. As soon as you give away that much power you will be burned. All these organizations seem to have an agenda at some point along the way an eventually it shows. McCain needs to get off the bipartisan bandwagon, it has not served Bush or any other Repub in the last 10 years plus to be an appeaser to bad policy in an attempt to get along. Leaders lead by example and placating, appeasing and being a wuss are not what I consider leadership qualities. NO Obama not ever... Thanks Posted by: afuel at October 03, 2008 11:26 PM (/kh/V) 79
