Debate Cheat Sheet

I've whipped together a quick summation of tonight's debate for those who missed it or would just like the reference.

A few preliminary matters: some observers during the liveblog (including me) thought that Ifill was giving Biden the last word more than Palin. I counted and found that was not the case. Biden got first crack at 10 questions; Palin got to answer first for 11. Biden got the last word for 11 questions; Palin got the last word 10 times. Occasionally the same candidate who answered first would answer last, but Ifill would then see to it that the other one had an opportunity to do that to keep it even.

The following table goes according the questions Ifill asked. Occasionally one or both candidates would get off topic or return to a previous topic. Also, a number of times the candidates would exchange words more than once on a topic. I've included the most precise summation I could muster; you'll note that their answers aren't always responsive to the question asked.

A rush transcript of the debate is at CNN; watch out, it sometimes gets the name of the party speaking wrong.

Huh: The table displays fine on the main page, but is preceded by a bunch of white space on the minx page. Just scroll down. Somebody can explain to me what I did wrong.

Issue Question Biden Palin
Bailout Bill Was this the worst of Washington or the best of Washington that we saw play out? Neither; it's Bush's fault, deregulation's fault, CEO's fault. But we're going to put the focus on the middle class. The economy is hurting and the federal government has not provided sound oversight; the Senate didn't want to listen when McCain proposed Fannie/Freddie reforms, but McCain's bipartisan efforts have been instrumental in bringing folks together over this past week.
Bipartisanship How, as vice president, would you work to shrink this gap of polarization which has sprung up in Washington? I have almost as many friends on the Republican side of the aisle as I do the Democratic side of the aisle. BTW, last week McCain said the fundamentals of our economy were strong. [Responding]The American workforce is the greatest in this world. As far as bipartisanship, we're known for putting partisan politics aside to just get the job done. Obama votes 96% along party lines.
Subprime Lending Who do you think was at fault? Was it the greedy lenders? Was it the risky home-buyers who shouldn't have been buying a home in the first place? McCain was surprised by the mortgage meltdown. He was for deregulation and we let Wall Street run wild. Now Joey Danco never has enough money fill up his tank. [Responding:] Obama did not vote to raise taxes. Darn right it was the predator lenders! But, we need to make sure that as individuals we're taking personal responsibility through all of this. [Changing topic:] Obama and Biden also voted for the largest tax increases in U.S. history.
Taxes [To Biden:] You proposed raising taxes on people who earn over $250,000 a year. The question for you is, why is that not class warfare?
[To Palin:] You have proposed a tax employer health benefits. I want to know why that isn't taking things out on the poor.
It's about fairness! And 95% of the people in the United States of America making less than $150,000 will get a tax break. When you talk about Obama's tax increase affecting only those making $250,000 a year or more, you're forgetting millions of small businesses that are going to fit into that category.
Bullshit Question What promises have you and your campaigns made to the American people that you're not going to be able to keep? We're probably not going to double foreign assistance. We're not going to go forward with the tax cut proposals of the [Bush] administration. We're going to reduce wasteful spending. We keep our promises.
Mortgages/Gotcha [To Palin:] Last year, Congress passed a bill that would make it more difficult for debt-strapped mortgage-holders to declare bankruptcy. Would you have supported it?
[To Biden:] You voted for this bankruptcy bill. Obama voted against it. Some people have said that mortgage- holders really paid the price.
Obama saw the glass as half- empty. I saw it as half-full. We should allow bankruptcy courts to adjust the interest rate and principal of mortgages. Yes, I would have. We have McCain to thank for at least warning people of Fannie/Freddi.
Climate Change What is true and what is false about what we have heard, read, discussed, debated about the causes of climate change? I think it's clearly manmade. Drilling for oil will not benefit us for 10 years. There is something to be said for man's activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet. We have an "all of the above" approach to energy reform, including drill, baby, drill.
Same-sex Benefits Do you support, as they do in Alaska, granting same-sex benefits to couples? Absolutely positively. There will be absolutely no distinction from a constitutional standpoint or a legal standpoint between a same-sex and a heterosexual couple. [When pressed:] I do not support gay marriage. Tolerance is key; contractual relationships should be honored. Marriage is between one man and one woman.
Iraq War You have said that you would like to see a real clear plan for an exit strategy. What should that be? 16 month withdrawal. McCain cuts off funding for the troops. Surge, surge, surge. Obama/Biden waves the white flag.
Iran and Pakistan What's the greater threat, a nuclear Iran or an unstable Pakistan? They are both dangerous. They are both dangerous, but Iran is threatening Israel.
Engagement Secretaries of State Baker, Kissinger, Powell, and Baker, they have all advocated some level of engagement with enemies. Do you think these former secretaries of state are wrong on that? Obama did not say "without preconditions." Obama wants to sit down with Ahmadinejad.
Israel What has this administration done right or wrong [with] the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? And is a two-state solution the solution? No one is a better friend to Israel than Joe Biden. Israel is our strongest and best ally in the Middle East. A two-state solution is the solution.
Nuclear Conflict What should be the trigger, or should there be a trigger, when nuclear weapons use is ever put into play? Obama keeps nukes out of the hands of terrorists. Our nukes are a deterrent. We must impose sanctions on other nations trying to acquire nukes.
Interventionism [To Biden:] You argued for intervention in Bosnia and Kosovo, initially in Iraq and Pakistan and now in Darfur, putting U.S. troops on the ground. Boots on the ground. Is this something the American public has the stomach for?
[To Palin:] Governor?
Intervention saves lives. We were right to do it in Kosovo; we should do it in Darfur. All options are on the table.
Individualism [To Biden:] How would a Biden administration be different from an Obama administration if that were to happen.
[To Palin:] Governor?
If something happened to Obama, I would carry out his policies. I disagree with McCain on ANWR.
Vice Presidency What it is you think the vice presidency is worth now? I'm going to sit in on all of Obama's meetings and tell him what to do. VP presides over the Senate and I plan to use that authority to advance McCain's agenda.
[To Palin:] Do you believe as Vice President Cheney does, that the Executive Branch does not hold complete sway over the office of the vice presidency, that it it is also a member of the Legislative Branch? Article I defines the VP as an executive position. (But see here). Cheney is the most dangerous VP ever. The founding fathers built a lot of flexibility into the system.
Achilles Heel The conventional wisdom, Gov. Palin with you, is that your Achilles heel is that you lack experience. Your conventional wisdom against you is that your Achilles heel is that you lack discipline, Sen. Biden. What id it really for you, Gov. Palin? What is it really for you, Sen. Biden? I have excessive passion. I'm not going to change. I do not lack experience; I was a governor and a mayor.
Flip-flop Can you think of a single issue, policy issue, in which you were forced to change a long-held view in order to accommodate changed circumstances? I realized that when voting on judicial nominees, you can't just inquire as to their legal qualifications, you have to make sure of their political qualifications. I have been forced to compromise on budgets as governor.
Bipartisanship II How do you change the tone, as vice president, as number-two? I don't question the motives of fellow Senators, I question their judgment. That's respect. You appoint people regardless of party affiliation.

5 Ifill did a pretty good job.

Yeah, her questions were maybe tilted toward the kind of questions that Democrats would usually ask, but not viciously so, and Palin danced artfully around some of the preprogrammed answers (I pray three times a day facing ANWR that we'll get Palin in the Oval Office before carbon caps become law) and managed to get Biden to play follow-the-leader (gay marriage) on others.

We'll never know whether Ms Ifill got any 'guidance' from the debate commission after all the froufrou over her book, but regardless, the end result was fairer than any Republican not holding a gun in his or her hand can reasonably expect from the Obama Media these days.

It is inconceivable to me why the Repubs are not taking it to the Dems on the FF issue.  Even the barracuda passed on a chance to destroy them during the debate tonight.  This problem is totally owned by the Dems and the Repubs are allowing them to spout this BS about deregulation and repeal of Glass-Steagle virtually unopposed.

It is the “Bush lied” mime all over again.

11 Bullshit Question"What promises have you and your campaigns made to the American people that you're not going to be able to keep?"

McCain had said at his debate llast week there would be a spending freeze except for military. Palin needed to mention that McCain had already laid that out.

Individualism[To Biden:] How would a Biden administration be different from an Obama administration if that were to happen.

Palin should have asked Biden: Senator Biden, have you finally given up on imposing your plan to divide iraq into 3 separate countries, which the iraqis have never indicated they wanted?

Israel:"No one is a better friend to Israel than Joe Biden."
Palin should have asked Biden: Senator, you voted against the 1991 Gulf War. Since Iraq subsequently attacked neutral Israel (with missles) during that war, do you concede now that you made a mistake in not supporting
the first Gulf war.

12 Vic, dunno why myself.  Main St/Wall St, blah, blah, blah, doesn't cut it.  And the regulation baloney drives me nuts too.  There's regulation that actually does good, then there's stupid ass regulation.  And I don't trust congress to produce the former when their track record shows they are experts at the latter.

Ace posits that Juan is waiting for the bailout bill to pass.  If so, maybe that's why the RNC is waiting too.

Me, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the whole mess, so maybe there is an aspect of it that the Repubs are vulnerable on that I'm not aware of.  I've tried to email the RNC several times, but interestingly the contact email addresses at their site consistently get thrown back at me.  I don't know what the problem is, but it makes me feel like they don't really want to hear from me.

O/T and FWIW, I did find this summary of the mess from a libertarian point of view informative.  Everything I know about all of this I've learned in the last two weeks, so if it's below you, don't take offense (and don't come back and tell me I'm ignint about it, that I understand).

Yes, good article. Ace still thinks we need the bailout despite the Fed dumping 630 billion to aid in liquidity. I don’t understand that.

Everyone likes to keep saying that this issue is too complicated for us “common morons” to understand and we need to let the “experts” in Congress provide the solution. I find that thinking to be ludicrous to say the least.

The Lamocrat Party has basically signed over all of its desires on this issue to the Congressional Black Caucus whose knowledge of the economy can be boiled down to “where’s my check?” All those u-tube videos with Bwarny Fwank, Dodd, and the CBC should be played constantly as commercials.

Repubs should be attacking on this relentlessly. Instead they are, once again, playing nice so they can “reach across the aisle”. Personally, I think that strategy is more akin to begging for a “reach around” while getting the shaft.

Watching the Fox morning spin and Steve Dooci(?) finally spoke the elephant on the couch when one of the heads wanted to know if this was the same Sarah Palin. He used the “edit” word regarding the CBS and ABC interviews. Of course the other clowns denied that, they are after all, News editors as well.

16 "Yes, good article. Ace still thinks we need the bailout despite the Fed dumping 630 billion to aid in liquidity. I don’t understand that."

Ace doesn't think that's enough. Also, where do you think the Fed gets its money? They print it, in essence. If the Fed dumps more in, that would have sharp inflationary pressure.

This problem could go away entirely if there was a willingness to print all the money required. Mind you, that could cause other problems....

The Fed gets it’s money from the same place Congress does. It makes no difference where the money comes from in this case, only who is spending it.

A few preliminary matters: some observers during the liveblog (including me) thought that Ifill was giving Biden the last word more than Palin.

The process was First Word, Second Word, First Rebuttal, Second Rebuttal.  The candidate that had the Second Rebuttal got the First Word on the next question.  Sometimes, it got confusing because Ifill would inject a question into the Rebuttal phase and it threw the appearance of alternating shots off.

Great table.  Thanks.

Heh.  Came to work early and ran into the cleaning crew.  After they razzed me for looking like hell, I told them I stayed up late watching the debate.  Everyone mood quickly changed fom Friday happy-jokey sort to carefully neutral and one asked what I thought.  I first gave a sort-of bland answer (She did well, really well etc.) with general nods from them.

Then I just blurted, "Oh, she kicked his ass."  And they all laughed in agreement.  Big smiles and suddenly everyone was back to being relaxed and teasing each other.  They were delighted that I thought she did well as if they were personally worried about her and/or upset with the nasty attacks on her.

Very nice.  I say that Palin won big with many folks.

Things to do:

1- Get Slublog to photoshop Joe Biden in an orange  Home Depot apron

2- Point out to lib friend that, whatever Palin's shortcomings, Joe Biden managed to do the following:

a - be off by a *large factor* on that 3 weeks in Iraq = six years in Afghanistan comment, which he made repeatedly

b - screwed up the Lebannon/Hezbollaah piece

c - Confused major sections of the Constitution

d - lied about what his "principal" said.

--------------------------------

And for all the talk about Biden's comment about Clean Coal being "taken out of context" - I would have loved to hear Palin say "Just what is the context, Senator Biden ... China?"

31 Biden says they don't support redefining marriage "from the civil side". That means churches don't have to perform same-sex weddings. But "from the legal side", they fully intend to force your state to adopt same-sex "marriage". They'll hide behind judges to get it done, but they fully intend to do it. And that's just for starters.

Regarding "Bosniak" -

Sure, Bosniak is technically correct, but then so was Kerry's "jenjhis khan" pronounciation and, "Potatoe" was an accepted alternate spelling for spuds.

It doesn't matter that "Joe was right" what matters is that Joe's supporters will be on the defensive.

My take is that the debate isn't really over. Or shouldn't be considered over, I guess.

Biden lied and lied and if he gets pounded on that, people's perception of how well he did will go down.

Anyone who tries to claim he did well should be met with a list of lies and the response, best given with a snear, "yeh, I could sound smart if I just made up a lot of stuff that sounded good."

Great job! Lots of work for you - thanks!

I love how she slices and dices her victim while smiling. It was great fun to watch!

I am really glad the truth came out about Ifil at the time it did. It caused the issue to be fresh in everyone's minds and put the spotlight on Ifil to have to be professional. I do not for 1 min think that she would have been as fair as she was, if things had not come to light just this week and brought such vivid reaction.

Clearly the Palin that we got to see last night - is the result of the McCain people realizing they were handling their hot rod car like it was a delivery van. We started seeing/hearing inklings last week that this was the case. Last night it was obvious that letting the hot rod car has been turned lose to do what they do! And she did a great job of leaving tread marks all over Biden.

One of the biggest points Palin scored IMO was when she said she was the first Governor to appoint a subcabinet on climate change.  She talked all night about stuff she is ACTUALLY DOING to address some of our problems, while Biden just bloviated because he's never done anything important in 35 years.   I also thought her answers on climate change and gay rights were huge - she gave the Dems nothing to paint her as a right-wing extremist, and she came out center-right which is where 70% of America is.

I also LOVED how she also called bullshit on Biden about his vote on the war.  "It was a WAR resolution, Senator."  I am sick of these Dems that think they can bullshit the people now about that vote.  It didn't work for Hillary in the primaries, and it didn't work for Kerry and Edwards in 2004.  The McCain campaign is out with some huge quotes from Biden before and after the vote showing that of course he voted to invade and take out Saddam Hussein.

In general Palin called bullshit more often than Biden did.  That's how you win a debate.

50 Correct me where I'm wrong. But FactCheck.org misrepresents itself as unbiased.

FactCheck.org
-by Brooks Jackson, Viveca Novak, Lori Robertson, Joe Miller, Jessica Henig and Justin Bank
on Palin/Biden debate

1. NO WHERE is the VP Constitutional Role job description Gaffe noted!

2. SPAIN: "McCain appeared confused when asked whether he would meet with President Zapatero of Spain.  ...but it wasn't clear he'd understood the question." Couching anwer prior to "That's not a refusal to meet with Zapatero, as Biden said. It's simply a refusal to commit himself one way or the other."

3.IRAQ TROOP LEVELS: "and with the surge that has worked, we're now down to [TOWARDS] pre-surge numbers in Iraq." --not worth a factscheck spank.

4. Afghan General's Name: Biden didn't even try naming the General. Biden also did not correct Palin's mispronounciation of the General's name. Biden earned no points on "getting that right" as Fact Checks claims he did. Palin clarified that "surge" principles of holding what you take would indeed work in Afghanistan as it did in Iraq. Palin scored there, but FactChecks ignored her point. Biden's oversimplification denying that any surge in Afghanistan would work was wrong, and FactChecks hardly noted just how wrong Biden was on Afghanistan, giving him credit where he earned nada. Biden misrepresented the "surge" context and abused the report mentioned that seems to have been to place emphasis on unshakable  TRIBAL allegiances in the mountains of Afghanistan. Neither Palin nor McCain ever said that the geographical landscape of Iraq matches Afghanistan, nor that the ideological mindsets of Iraqis matches Afghanis.

5. Taxing lower bracket income earners and not providing adults with health care are things that Obama/Biden have yet to own up with explications. FactChecks isn't helping clarify the DNC POTUS platform's false promises. In fact, the Democrats have been touting health coverage for "every American". There's no loud admission YET that Obama will only fund health coverage for children. Hell, that's already on the books per state! CHIPS in TX.
