| McCain Holding Back on Fannie and Freddie? Um... Wait For ItNo confirmation on this, no tip, no hint. But I know what he's doing. John McCain is waiting until the bill passes. And then he will unleash the dogs of war. And he will say, "I stayed away from making these partisan attacks, even though you lied ridiculously about me and your own attempts at 'reform.' I held back, because partisan attacks -- even truthful ones -- would harm our country and reduce the chances of getting a vital bill passed. "Well, the bill is now passed. I put country first. You didn't, and you lied on top of that. And now -- only now that this crisis has been dealt with, to the extent we can -- I'm going to give you a bit of straight-talk about Fannie, Freddie, my attempts to reform it, and your attempts to block reform on behalf of your big donors and friends in ACORN." Count on it.Comments1

I've been thinking this for awhile. Nancy Pelosi gave that garbage speech right before the vote, and McCain doesn't want to be be that guy.
I have a feeling as soon as the bailout passes, he come out guns-a-blazin'. Posted by: embittered redleg at October 02, 2008 11:24 PM (STIoS) 3

Ace, if that really happens, I'll apologize and admit I was wrong. -Even if it fails-, if he at least -makes a serious effort-, I'll admit I was wrong.
But I don't think it's gonna happen. He'll mention it, but he's not going to make it anything like the "dogs of hell" or central to his campaign, which he should. Qwinn Posted by: Zombie Qwinn at October 02, 2008 11:25 PM (3FVXC) 6
Possible. I mean, I hope that's the plan.

This is too nuanced for even me, and I'm totally in the tank for McCain.
No one's going to pay attention to this line of attack. Zippy chance it gets through the MSM filter. You know what would be better than voting for the bill, then making some kind of highly technical Fannie Mae attack that no one will understand? NOT voting for this shitty bill, and making hay about what a shit taco it is. Posted by: Andrew Sullivan at October 02, 2008 11:27 PM (4KSmZ) 13

I'll be happy to take back everything I thought in the first half of the debate about Palin not articulating conservative principles well enough. I would be very pleased to be wrong. She was better in many ways, but I was looking for specific things that I didn't see until the second half. However, browsing with PoliViews for immediate reactions from the lefty blogs convinced me that something good happened tonight.

Hope you are right there, sport! It has been frustrating with every fooker blaming Bush for everything and no one pointing finger where the blame actually is - Dems in the Congress and the fat cat execs who contributed to the Dems while pocketing millions. It is time McCain started acting tough on his opponents instead of trying to be their friend and pissing on "wall street" all the time. He should point out that the wall st execs are actually obama (or Dodd, Schumer, Barney) contributors. Posted by: Rex at October 02, 2008 11:28 PM (iXcho) 20

Disagree. To attack the bill would be to attack Democrats, and we all know McCain only urinates on conservatives, like the House Republicans. I don't know -- time is getting short, both in terms of campaigning and dealing with the fiscal crisis. It's certainly not a given that the latest bailout bill will pass; and that even if it passes both houses and gets W.'s autograph, that it will actually solve the problem.
It may well be that the McCain is "saving" this issue for late in the campaign in order to use it against whatever "October surprise" the Donks are planning. But if the financial ship sinks lower in the water and the bill fails to get enough votes, McCain will have to go on the attack regardless. Posted by: Monty at October 02, 2008 11:31 PM (dCZbI) 32

Hey, Obvious and booben? Can you tell me who said this?
AND THE WINNER IS Sarah Palin won this debate and puts the campaign in a great position to rail against the media. Whatever she did before this debate — prayed? – is what she should always fall back on. And my impression is what she does. And why she’s come so far so fast. Sarah Palin is the breath of fresh air on the political scene so many hoped she is. And she’ll be honored to beat the guy who’s been in the Senate since she was in the second grade. Posted by: XBradTC at October 02, 2008 11:32 PM (n73wJ) 37
I totally agree with this premise Ace and even though I've been frustrated he's not using the most obvious line about the reforms he offered in 2005, I started to believe he's holding them back for this moment. Stopping his campaign to go back to DC, saying country first, and holding back so far in both debates might be a part of the overall stratedgy. I also believe he would normally not want to unload on the dems, sometimes even going after repubs harder than he would dems, but things are different this year. First of all, his love affair with the MSM is over, and Palin took a nasty swipe at them tonight. I also think she and McCain will continue to do this against the MSM and I honestly think the second this bill passes....he and Palin come out with the gloves off and made this crisi the pinnacle of his campaign.

Ace:
I know this is the thinking but I also believe that you are projecting what you would do. McCain has never shown that he will call out his colleagues in the Senate and House, unless of course they happen to be Republicans. When he does he does not do as specifically as is required here. Lord I hope you are correct but as I said in another post, the public's attention is often set early when the public first pay attention to something. By sitting on the side taking the hits and not hitting back you are letting the die cast against you. It is difficult to change opinion once it becomes common thinking. If McCain did not want to do it that is fine. He could have let Palin do it and be sufficiently detached. This debate had huge interest. I seriously hope you're right about this, Ace. McCain has a nasty habit of being nice to people he shouldn't. He's one of the last of the old "collegial" Senators.... the ones who would rake each other over the coals in debate, then go out and have a drink together after work and part as friends. Partisan politics in the Dizzy City have gotten far meaner than they used to be; McCain is one of the very few who haven't increased their partisan vitriol as a result.

Maybe, but it sounds like a really bad strategy. No one will care much about this after a bill is passed and that could still be a couple weeks from now. I see no advantage in waiting. By the time this is settled the media will have sprung their October surprise and this issue will have been forgotten. Democrats know how to use propaganda and an important rule is to get your message out early because that makes your side of the story "conventional wisdom."

Posted by: Dudley Smith at October 02, 2008 11:57 PM (uVCZA) 94
McCain's problem right now is how to deal with an economy that is burning slowly rather than exploding. An explosion is alarming and convinces people that immediate action is required. A slow burn is deceptive and sometimes invisible; it makes people think they have time to think about it, to fetch water, to build firebreaks. McCain has to treat lightly for more reasons than one, because he knows that there is a lot of pain on the way, and Americans want to hear solutions, not just a litany of woe. McCain is too honorable a man to blow sunshine up our collective asses and assure us of salvation, but Obama has no such scruples.
Posted by: Monty at October 03, 2008 12:00 AM (dCZbI) 95
McCain has been playing hardball since the conventions. He's kept Obama's campaign spinning like a drunken tango dancer simply by playing close to the vest and making wise strategic moves.
I can't say he'll win, but he's giving it a hell of a try. I anticipate a blitz leading up to the election. McCain will break out ACORN, Palin, possibly Ayers, etc., between now and election day. Obama won't have time to pick a position, and the media won't have time to pooh-pooh everything McCain says. Combined with the general lack of information had on Obama may be enough to push McCain over the top. Say what you will, McCain's campaign has had a handle on the media cycle. I hate to burst anyone's bubble but I think it's too late. Tonight was the big stage with everyone watching. Palin passed up so many opportunities to hammer Biden over the head with Fred/Fran that the omission has to be deliberate. By the time McCain starts talking about it, however, people will have moved on.
Conventional wisdom is already established that the ailing economy is the Republicans fault. Brand rehabilitation is the most difficult of marketing feats. And the in-the-tank media is not likely to cooperate and give McCain a very large soapbox after this legislation has passed. The voting public has a short attention span and they'll probably be focused on the first of the inevitable October surprises. Posted by: Lost Near Pittsburgh at October 03, 2008 12:18 AM (lhphN) 102
Folks I hope to Hell that the McCain people were paying attention when they showed the Luntz focus group on Fox and they showed the approvals going through the roof when she spoke about personal responsibility. What this shows, very clearly, is that the people of this country are smart enough and can understand that this mess is not because of "predatory lenders" per se (thought there has been some of that), buy that it is about stupid and/or predatory borrowers. This is the kind of statement that moderate politicians are loathe to make because they think they have to make sure all people believe nobody is at fault except those evil and more powerful rich guys on Wall St. People talk around the water cooler, they speak with their friends and family and no matter what the media spouts this stuff gets out. Memo to McCain you can follow up on this as Obama would never follow and would come off looking like a typical politician. You can then, oh please, land the devastating blows about the dem's ties to the firms at the center of this and you can stick a knife in and twist...

Much as I hate to say it, Conventional Wisdom (that smug bastard) is not entirely wrong. The Fannie/Freddie mess is an entirely Democrat mess, true, but the GOP's hands are far from clean in terms of weak oversight and lack of regulatory muscle. The current financial meltdown is due to government ineptitude, and encompasses both parties. Posted by: Monty at October 03, 2008 12:23 AM (dCZbI) 105

You're getting a little too paranoid, funky chicken. I hate the astroturfing as much as you do. I'll admit I'm a little pessimistic when it comes to McCain, and given the way he's gone against us in the past so many times I think I'm a little justified in that. While I might not be a gung-ho McCain supporter, I sure am an enthusiastic Palin supporter. (My first choice was Fred! second choice Romney and third Guiliani.) Due to the Couric and Gibson interviews I had low expectations going into this but Palin did herself, her family, and her country proud tonight. I was saying prayers for her throughout the day. I'm voting for McCain, and thanks to Palin I will no longer have to hold my nose while doing it.

Perhaps McCain's political advisers are telling him that assigning blame to anyone but Wall Street is a net loss. The right, left and center all hate what Wall Street has wrought, so there are gains all around for assigning blame there. He's already got the conservative vote locked in with Palin. He needs some of the independents and a few of the center-left to win. He can't afford to risk alienating the swing voters by pointing a finger at the government.
And who is perceived right now to be most closely associated with "government" -- the incumbent party or the party of "change"? If McCain blames the Democrats, they will just respond that this mess happened under a Republican administration and that it was Bush's job to do something about it. If McCain pointed out that Bush did try to do something about it, then he'd be in the position of defending a rather unpopular President. I, personally, don't feel this is a good strategy, but this is the way some political consultants think. They over study a problem until it leads to some irrational conclusions. Posted by: Lost Near Pittsburgh at October 03, 2008 02:12 AM (lhphN) 139
McCain said that the important task is to fix the problem first. That there would be plenty of time to point fingers after. We all saw how Pelosi worked her magic during the House's first attempt at a bill.
However, McCain better address this issue. Like some in Lunz's focus group mentioned, I'm fed up with DC and the politicians. Posted by: dk70 at October 03, 2008 02:18 AM (IgY6J) 140

Well, that's fine too. He doesn't have to name them. But if you shine the light in the right freaking spot, no one will be able to ignore the cockroaches. Then you can pop off with "Hey, isn't he with Obama?" There's a lot of pieces 'to blame' here, but it all comes back to the CRA and Fanny and Freddy pushing CRA loans hard. The "Deregulation" crap didn't affect Fanny and Freddy, and they had enough pull to be excluded from Sarbanes-Oxley. Wall street hates Sarbanes-Oxley, and I can't imagine they have any happy thoughts for people that managed to avoid it - while simultaneously pulling exactly the same stunt that sunk Enron. "Teaser Rate" loans are not a problem under non-CRA conditions. When you've put twenty farking percent down for a house, paid mortgages on time for five years (up to 30% vested now), you don't ever just walk away from the house. And if you did, the bank isn't going to take a massive loss - they just got 30%! There's a couple of clips of Franklin Raines and the other idiots saying some truly moronic things in hindsight. For whatever reason McCain is still on his 'bi-partisan' kick. He's in fantasy land...it's almost 2009 and we're still dealing with BDS over the 2000 election. If McCain thinks the donks will be graceful losers over this election, he's smoking industrial-grade crack. Sorry kids, if you think BDS was over the top, wait till you have to deal with MDS... Seriously, McCain HAS to hang FannyMae/FreddieMac deal around the donks necks or he'll NEVER sway the general public into his camp. That generalized rage brewing in the street will focus on the easiest target in sight, the current administration; McCain HAS to redirect that anger or BHO will lie his way into the WH...gliding in on a magic carpet held up by the MSM. Unfortunately, I am afraid that McCain is in his "Deacon" mode right now. McCain has several hot button issues that could be turned into amazingly effective weapons if he chose, but countering the constant littany of lies that the Left spews out is a daunting task. The truth has to be repeated as often as, or more often than, the lies in order to sink in. If he saves it all up for the last days of this war then perhaps the shock value will be enough to get through the election. I sure hope so. If only the Right was as vigorous in repeating the truth as the Left is at repeating bullshit - we wouldn't be in this mess. Bush 1 and Dole failed because they refused to fight - which means they deserved to lose. I hope McCain has figured that out.

I liked Palin much better before the debate. Last night, she sold her soul to Mc Sellout.
Where was the Republican last night or the last debate? I didn't see one I recognized. Palin presented herself well except that she parroted the McCain sell out line. If I didn't know any better, I couldn't tell last night which party was tougher on foreign policy, which was the Tax cutting party and which was the Spending party, which was for Big government, which was for Small. Oh Boy! Mc Cain will give us Immigration Reform nicely tailored for the illegals, Cap and Trade and other Global Warming schlock, tougher regulation on those slimy predatory Capitalists on Wall Street and Main Street, some sort of capitulation on Health Care, more limitations on free speech and probably higher taxes to boot. What a way to attack a recession! Brilliant !Mc Cain. I am frightened to death of an Obama Presidency, but I also fear a Mc Cain Presidency. It wasn't just that the Mc Cain camp couldn't bring themselves to call out the Dems on Fannie and Freddie. Like Ace, I can see holding that back till passage of the Bailout. But Mc Cain can't call out the Dems on anything. Mc Cain is not a reformer. That is crap. Our government bureaucracy has been thoroughly infiltrated with leftist monnkey wrenchers. The State Department, CIA, FBI, EPA, Departments of Justice, Interior; you name it. This corrupt leftist government needs a leader who will go after corruption and malfeasance anywhere he finds it, while protecting our rights and individual liberties in the process. Mc Cain is not that person. Mc Cain can only see Republican corruption. Anything the left does is OK by Mc Cain. What we have in this election is Heavy Handed Marxism so far successfully masquerading as a moderate Democrat and Socialism Lite masquerading as a Republican. The big question is whether to confront a leftist takeover now by Obama when conservativism still has some ability to fight back, or in four years after Mc Cain 's brand of socialism has thoroughly weakened this country. As for me, since I live in California and my vote won't count anyway, I'm voting for the nut case Barr in protest. Posted by: Paul at October 03, 2008 12:19 PM (IReOt) 160

I believed he was asked about his past attempts to reform/regulate FM/FM, who was responsible for blocking those attempts, and why. Paraphrasing, he said, "Look, this is a grave economic crisis. The rescue bill is a tourniquet. Once the tourniquet is applied and the bleeding stops, we can and will turn our attention to the wound, how it was caused, and who allowed it to be inflicted." The opportune time to launch the attack is prior to and during the debate on the economy. Obama thinks he owns this issue, but he's going to be on defense from a complete frontal assault on this debacle that can be laid directly at the feet of democratic policies and active efforts to roadblock greater oversight. Not to mention his own complicity based on his ACORN ties and Fannie bribes. Yes bribes, call 'em what they are folks!
It's a great strategy, because there's still a lot of time left and the truth cannot be hidden. Posted by: timajin at October 03, 2008 03:23 PM (/BkaD) 168
I wish you were right, as I have thought of that idea myself. But the alternative theory is that this is the vintage John McCain that makes us all wince. The guy that won’t utter a bad word about his Democratic Senate colleagues even when they will stab him in the back when the chance arises, but buffer his bi-partisan bona fides by slamming Republicans every chance he gets. He promises to make pork abusers famous, but he gives a pass to the biggest culprits in this mess, Countrywide Chris Dodd and Barney “Nothing to see here folks” Frank. I think that what attracted him to Palin is the idea that she took on her State’s party Chairman, and saw in her, what he likes to see in himself.
Like I said, I hope you're right, because I think that is McCain’s only shot at turning this around, unless Obama self-sabotages or Biden sticks his foot in it again. Unfortunately, I have seen too many examples of the latter to have any real hope. Posted by: Matt at October 03, 2008 04:07 PM (UYmdr) 169
ATTENTION McCain Staffers: I assume you are out there. If you are, take heed... you must, MUST, MUST ensure that this happens. McCain better not just do this but his temper better be flaring. I want to see him PISSED OFF, I want his face so red and his voice so terrifyingly menacing that BHO crawls under his podium and stays there for the rest of the debate whimpering in the fetal position. Additionally, the first time that BHO attempts to tie McCain to Bush, McCain MUST, MUST, MUST turn on his heels and then reply (VERBATIM): "Senator, say what you will about George W. Bush and his policies. George W. Bush, our President, is a good an honorable man that has done his level best, and may I add, succeeded at, protecting this nation from an additional tragedy, the likes of which befell us on September 11, 2001. I have disagreed with the President on a number of policy issues, but he has my respect, admiration and heartfelt appreciation for the dedication and service he has shown this country seeing it through its darkest of hours. The association that you draw between me and George W. Bush, as specious as that association is, is one that I am much more comfortable with and the American people are ultimately much more comfortable with than the associations that you bring to the table, Senator Obama, such as: · The association with unrepentant radical and domestic terrorist, William Ayers. · The association with vitriolic, anti-American, hate-monger, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. · The association with the corruption-ridden, election fixing, embezzling laden, thug-street-gang of an organization called ACORN. · And last but not least, the association with the soon to be subject of a McCain/Palin administration sponsored federal investigation and subsequent federal indictment for corruption, racketeering, fraud, embezzlement, perjury, dereliction of duty and whatever other charges are found to be appropriate - bankrupter of Fannie May, the never to see the light of day except through prison bars again...Franklin Raines.
