I'm not so sure.  If the campaign is truly concerned about Palin's debate abilities (and I think there is evidence to support that concern), then this might have been a good play by the campaign.

By raising the issue the day before the debate, it's too late for Ifill to be replaced.  McCain's campaign has its bases covered.  If Palin does well, there is no concern.  If she does poorly, Ifill's bias and conflict of interest will be emphasized, hopefully taking some of the sting out of a sub-par debate performance.

However, I have seen her work, and I doubt she will in the end be able to fully control or conceal her approval or disapproval, and to moderate in a way that does justice to either candidate.
