VP Debate Moderator Gwen Ifill Working On Book Based On The Success Of Obama

Slublog had this in the headlines last night but it's breaking out so I thought it should get a post.

The book is due out next year on inauguration day. Based on this description of the book, do you think she might have just a wee bit of financial incentive to see Obama win?

In The Breakthrough, veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power…Drawing on interviews with power brokers like Senator Obama, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others, as well as her own razor-sharp observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict and the ‘black enough’ conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history.

Follow the link to Michelle Malkin's for more on just how unbelievable this is and Ifill's previous episodes of anti-Republican bias.

BTW- The McCain campaign apparently had no idea she was working on this book despite the fact that it's being promoted and not a secret.

1 I dunno, I figure now that this has been outed she'll have to bend over backwards to prove she's not biased.

Probably better than any replacement they're likely to turn up.

3 I don't fault the McCain camp for not knowing about the book.  Eventually, you have to trust someone and in this case they trusted the Commission on Presidential Debates to fulfill their mission.

Their trust was obviously misplaced, but in general this seems more the fault of the Commission than anyone else.  They either missed this or didn't care about it.

Posted by: Slublog at October 01, 2008 10:56 AM (R8+nJ)

4 I agree that she'll be a better moderator now that this is out.  But do you think she'll give a full disclosure of her financial incentive in an Obama win before the debate begins?  Most of America is way too oblivious and doesn't know a thing.

Posted by: Sandy at October 01, 2008 10:56 AM (XFyLb)

5 Exactly someone. I don't think the McCain camp thought she would be any more biased than the rest of the MSM. Bringing this story up now, when she is sure to be finalizing the questions she plans to ask, is meant to ice the gotchas and to tell the MSM that dumb stories like "She blinked so she must have been lying" are out of bounds.

I know a lot of folks are up in arms in this, and I understand. But this could work in our favor. Ifill is now tainted goods, and the McCain camp should let everybody know that Ifill is tainted goods, but should merely ask, officially, that Ifill acknowledge her conflict of interest while introducing the candidates, and then leave it at that.

And wait to see what happens at the debate.

Ifill may be biased, but she ain't no dummy, and if everybody knows about the mask, she can't afford to let it fall and let herself become part of the story. This may pretty much force her to play it down the middle.

8 The correct thing for Palin to do would be, per Darleen at the PW Pub, to congratulate her on her celebrity book on Obama coming out on Coronation Day and to let her know that she's already pre-ordered a copy on Amazon, because she likes to read.

The McCain campaign says it didn't know.

But what if they did know?  Were they supposed to try to get Ifill kicked off?

The AP story writes itself:

"Today, the McCain campaign asked that distinguished journalist Gwen Ifill, seelcted by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential debates, be removed as moderator of the vice-presidential debate.  The move met stiff criticism from those already stunned that I fill is the only African-American and only woman moderating a debate in this historic campaign..."

25 Well what they should do is request that Ifill disclose her conflict of interest at the beginning of the debate, and viewers can decide on their own after that if she was fair or not. If she refuses to make a statement then I think they should ask her to recuse herself. If she refuses, go to the debate anyway but at least the cards are on the table.

Oh, wait, yes I did. In fact I knew it would be the case. Transparently biased moderators help conservatives, so I'm not too worried. I'm more worried that the McCain camp has been overcoaching Palin, as seen in recent (also biased) interviews. But I remain hopeful. Go Palin!

She'll start off with a short statement aknowledging her conflict of interest.  Anything less and she gets hammered by her colleagues.  She would avoid presenting McCain with a campaign issue if she stepped down, but that hardly seems likely.

Palin should ask for an autographed copy when replying to her first question.

There all msm, so yes, we expect bias. However, we don't expect an undisclosed conflict of interest because the moderator has a financial interest in the outcome of the election.

Not less biased, but what kind of ethics do you expect from someone that thinks that if she writes a book favoring one candidate, that she is still qualified to exercise what should be a non-partisan role.

Posted by: jason at October 01, 2008 11:31 AM (Cy1m7)

39 Karl -- I'm inclined to agree with you. It would only have hurt them more, making them look like whiners. I've never minded the bias, as it were. It's the claim that they are capable of impartiality that burns my biscuits. I know that when I clearly have a conflict of interest in a situation (say, I'm in charge of discipline for a function where my own children attend), I tend to overcompensate a bit, just to avoid giving anyone any little thing to complain about. Hopefully, we'll see the same effect from Ms. Gwen.

Both campaigns must agree to the moderator of any debate.

The book was announced before they agreed to have her as the moderator.

So you have only two choices in this matter:

1. the McCain camp is incompetent at doing the most basic of research.

2. they didnt really think it was a big deal.

I'm not so sure.  If the campaign is truly concerned about Palin's debate abilities (and I think there is evidence to support that concern), then this might have been a good play by the campaign.

By raising the issue the day before the debate, it's too late for Ifill to be replaced.  McCain's campaign has its bases covered.  If Palin does well, there is no concern.  If she does poorly, Ifill's bias and conflict of interest will be emphasized, hopefully taking some of the sting out of a sub-par debate performance.

How hard is it to vet the commission?  I know McCain's not real up to date on this new fangled internet thing but surely someone in his campaign could have typed the names of all the proposed moderators into Google to find out a bit about them.
The AP reported about Ifill’s book more than two weeks before August 6, when the campaigns agreed on moderators.

What your really saying and what seems quite clear is that this manufactured outrage on the eve of the debate is just a further attempt to muddy the waters to either protect Palin should she crash and burn or to cover the gross incompetence of those running his campaign who seem incapable of conducting basic research.

#70, I am concerned that it implies stupidity.  Anyone who thinks Deval Patrick is a "breakthrough" politician is an idiot.  He may be the least competent politician in America, and the most unpopular governor right now.  Anyone who thinks Cory Booker is a breakthrough politician is an idiot.  Newark is a fucking mess, a sanctuary city where illegal thugs are running wild and killing and terrorizing people and infiltrating the schools with MS-13 gangbanging.  I guess he is a step up from Sharpe James, who is in federal prison now, but that isn't saying a hell of a lot.

The only thing these four black politicians have in common is they they are handsome and give good speeches.  I happen to think Artur Davis is brilliant, but I would not walk across the street to spit on Barack Obama, Deval Patrick, or Cory Booker.  If these twits represent the future of black politics in America, black people are in trouble.

Jackass, it is not McCain's job to discover a COI. Instead, it is Ifill's obligation to disclose it. And since the Obama campaign had to know since he was the subject of her stroke book, it was pretty sleazy to go along with her silence. If you are saying it is incompetence to believe that Obama and Ifill would behave ethically, it says more about them and you then McCain.

Posted by: Deathly at October 01, 2008 12:51 PM (Q9Quj)

139 The AP reported about Ifill’s book more than two weeks before August 6, when the campaigns agreed on moderators.

But, did Ifill disclose to the commission and McCain that she had a COI, i.e., a financial interest in the outcome of the debate and election? No, she didn't - at least not to McCain.

What your really saying and what seems quite clear is that this manufactured outrage on the eve of the debate is just a further attempt to muddy the waters to either protect Palin should she crash and burn or to cover the gross incompetence of those running his campaign who seem incapable of conducting basic research.
Posted by: Deathly

No. What we are saying is that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. It is Ifill's obligation to disclose the COI, not McCain's duty to discover it. That she did not disclose it is an ethical violation. That obama knew about it and did not disclose it may not be an ethical violation but just another example of his sleazieness. Not surprisingly, you have no understanding of ethics and the requirements of disclosure. Even if you were adult enough to have had some exposure to ethics laws, I doubt you would ever adhere to them.

172 Palin should do no such thing (as mention the book, her interest in reading it, its place on Amazon, or any "congratulatory" remark or any other facile snark that can be come up with.) I cannot comprehend how anyone would think that would be appropriate or make Palin look like anything but a transparent tattletale, in the worst sort butter-wouldn't-melt-in-her-mouth
passive aggressive mean-girl way. (e.g, Edwards and his compassionate remarks about Cheney's gay daughter.) Whatever joy Palin's supporters might get from pointed remarks designed to illuminate the moderators failings, it wouldn't go over well generally and I'd think it in poor taste from either side of the aisle.

Ifill should be forced to recuse herself for failing to disclose a potential financial interest in the outcome of the election related to sales of a book she authored. Short of that she herself should disclose her interest to the viewing audience, and not put the burden or pleasure of disclosure on either of the participants.

Frankly I don't have confidence that Ifill hasn't skirted the rules in other ways, considering that she was willing to keep this potential conflict of interest to herself. That's my biggest concern. What if she is not above actually cheating to aid her self and the candidate of her preference?

Eyes on her might help, if she has not cheated with regard to the debate questions, she may attempt to be more balanced. However, I have seen her work, and I doubt she will in the end be able to fully control or conceal her approval or disapproval, and to moderate in a way that does justice to either candidate. She just doesn't have the mind for it.

Here's a bias example from Ifill during the Cheney/Edwards debate:

During a vice-presidential candidate debate she moderated in 2004 – when Democrat John Edwards attacked Republican Dick Cheney's former employer, Halliburton – the vice president said, "I can respond, Gwen, but it's going to take more than 30 seconds."

"Well, that's all you've got," she told Cheney.

Ifill told the Associated Press Democrats were delighted with her answer, because they "thought I was being snippy to Cheney." She explained that wasn't her intent.

218 OBAMA MEDIA BIAS ... NOW, OBAMA DEBATE BIAS !!!
The nation already is skeptical about the fairness and objectivity of the mainstream media regarding election coverage ... so, why in the world is Gwen Ifill the debate moderator, when she is writing a book about Obama ... especially since her book sales would increase if Obama/Biden win? The moderator in a debate ... especially one of this importance and magnitude ... should be seen as completely fair, objective and above reproach. This is a terrible choice, and could easily have been remedied by choosing from hundreds of other more objective potential moderators. I can imagine the outcry if Michelle Malkin, or Ann Coulter was chosen as the moderator for the first Vice Presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. FURTHER MORE ... Everyone knows that Roland Martin is in the tank for Obama ... and regarding his call for Palin to either 'put up, or shut up' ... for millions of Americans, we still feel that Obama never adequately explained why he chose to spend TWENTY YEARS, yes TWENTY YEARS, in Jeremiah Wright's anti-American, racist, black liberation church, which gave a life time achievement award to Louis Farrakhan, and Obama only quit the church due to public outrage and personal ambition.

Fighting the "Ifill" means fighting on thier turf, when you already tried a fight about debates. A maverick (guerilla) fighter does not return to the same battle with the same tactics. His opponents would already expect that and will defend accordingly. Maverick is a strategist, not a young punk showing up at a bar fight. Ifill thinks herself and zero too important to have any honor.

Its better to just know that the public sees it, knows the scandal if she pulls punches, and let it ride with the cards on the table. I would surmise they have prepped Barracuda for this.

The Maverick move is to let Sarah out of the chute guns blazing on Thur. Don't mention "John" during the debate. She will now have a non-edited time with the American people, a large punching gaffe-bag, and a poor cripple pointing at a timer. We need some red meat. The big bailout vote should be over, and we want direction and motivation.

I think McCain will let loose on the Obama history, and Brokaw might be the better referee. He can rein either of them in without being too partisan.

244 I have no particular hate on for Gwen Ifill.

But seriously.

This is a blatant financial conflict of interest. Even if one overlooked Ifill's politics and her prior negative coverage of Palin at the GOP convention, she makes more money if Obama becomes President than if he does not, and her fame and prestige shoot up as well.

This is a joke. At a bare minimum, her conflict must be disclosed to the American people at the beginning of tomorrow night's debate. Not doing so is absolutely unforgivable.

Oh, by the way without reading them I expect every comment on this thread agrees with mine in substance and/or feeling. And that's rare here, one must admit. Which is pretty strong evidence that this is a fucking joke.

The problem I see is that had McCain demanded a replacement:

- it would have looked desperate, or wanting kid gloves for Palin; certainly it would have been spun that way by the MSM

- what's to stop PBS putting up someone just as biased, or even more so? The McCain camp would be trapped, they couldn't demand a  replacement for the replacement!

-PBS could simply say "okay, YOU nominate someone, then". The new moderator could then tear Palin to shreds, and since he/she would be 'approved' by the McCain camp they couldn't complain. Imagine how that would be spun "even with their own choice of moderator they still lost!"

No, this was the right way to play it. Get the issue of her bias out there then proclaim you have confidence in her being fair. All the onus is on Ifill to prove her fairness now, and it's the closest thing to a win-win McCain can get from this.
