| Did Obama Forget The Name Of The Soldier On The Bracelet He Wears?Michelle Malkin thinks so and so does conservative film blogger Dirty Harry. Meh, it's hard to tell if he's reading the bracelet or just stumbling over the words while looking at it. Of course, not knowing the name off the top of his head isn't great but given the setting it's somewhat understandable. As with much of this campaign however, the bigger issues is what if McCain or Palin had done this instead of Obama? I think we all know what the reaction of the left and their house organs at MSNBC, The NY Times, etc. would be saying this morning. But since it's the Obamassiah, it's not only not an issue, it's probably racist or something to even wonder.Comments1
I don't know if he forgot or if he fumbled. But I am sure that soldier's mother was not happy since she gave him the bracelet so BHO would remember her son's name.

Irrelevant. "His mother told me not to let another mother suffer what she has". Ok, Barack, how exactly are you going to do that ? Wave your magic wand and prevent any soldier from every dying in war again ? He would have been much better off saying "Ok, John, I have a bracelet, too", and left it at that. Frankly, I couldn't even believe the fool brought up the war. That subject is a no-win for Obama. Everyone that is anti-war is already 200% behind him. All he can do with that line of thinking is turn off voters. Posted by: deadrody at September 27, 2008 12:11 PM (aCKVb) 3
Agreed, Drew.
This, and tiny gaffes like it, are inadvertent traps that look like easy pickings. They end up back-firing on Republican campaigns for being petty or hypocritical. For the Right to leap on them allows Obama and his propagandists to defend the inconsequential from a position of relative strength, instead of those monumental issues that the debate should be framed around and from which the Left defends the lower ground. Doesn't matter - he has Biden to remember that kind of "trivial" stuff for him, as well as foreign policy in general:

After 8 years of listening to a bunch of snotty assholes, who are otherwise my friends for one overriding reason or another (perhaps exceedingly poor judgment on my part), bashing Bush because of his occasional awkward utterances (many times taken out of context), the gaffes of Obonics have to be registering with them even at the subconscious level.

I don't know. Didn't watch the debate either, but I can't help but figure regardless of how it went, it will be presented by the media at worst as a wash, which is a net win for a Democrat. Being "Presidential" While Democrat. Posted by: krakatoa at September 27, 2008 12:45 PM (n1baw) 11

tmi3rd,
I watched the debate on reply last night (wtf is with having this on a Friday night anyway?). I missed the live blog here and didn't see any post-debate coverage. With that said, I am in the minority around here and think Obama either tied or won. My thought is Obama came off as competent enough and that's all he needed to do. McCain and Obama obviously have important differences in experience and worldview but the people who agree with either of them weren't going to change. The points McCain scored are for the most point are only going to resonate with people who are already predisposed to supporting him.For the rest I think it came across as a bunch of issues that reasonable people can disagree on. Now, I don't think that's the case but I don't think most people follow foreign affairs very closely and so I think Obama met most people's ("independents" or undecideds at least) minimum standards. Also, having so much talk on the economy at the top really helped Obama. People are pissed about this bailout situation and 'change' sounds good. McCain did nothing to tie Obama to the problem (ACORN/Fannie May &Freddie Mac donations/Franklin Raines, etc) or McCain's attempt to deal with the problem 5 years ago. Posted by: DrewM. at September 27, 2008 12:49 PM (hlYel) 13
He didn't forget the soldier's name...he probably never even bothered to remember it. I found it interesting that the mom who gave the bracelet to McCain told him not to let her son's death be in vain while the mom who gave the bracelet to Obama told him not to let other moms suffer like her.
To the first woman it was about making a soldier's ultimate sacrifice meaningful, while to the second it was all about her personal grief. That, my friends, is the difference between the right and the left. Posted by: Eric at September 27, 2008 12:49 PM (wM/aS) 14
The problem wasn't whether Barack remembered the soldier's name.
The problem was the "me, too!!!!" aspect to the way Obama brought this up. It was completely Obama-centered rather than Issue OR Dead Soldier-Dead Soldier's Family centered. Posted by: BumperStickerist at September 27, 2008 12:50 PM (NnAGL) 15
"His mother told me not to let another mother suffer what she has". When I heard that I whined out a few off-key lines of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", and then barfed my Agent-Orange-enriched Cheez Doodles all over the rug.

have been much better off saying "Ok, John, I have a bracelet, too",

I think that's why Obama stumbled around at that moment, too. He realized that he couldn't tell the story of the anti-war mom giving him a bracelet because he actually does want to become Commander in Chief. So he had to stop himself from giving the whole story, and interrupted his own thought pattern. Posted by: MayBee at September 27, 2008 12:55 PM (lAE3K) 18
Yep, That is what struck me, not that he necessarily forgot the name, but that it was a childish “me too” or at best an “oh yeah??” moment. Posted by: Vic at September 27, 2008 12:57 PM (b1ysY) 19

I was working, and had to listen to it on the radio. One thing I can't understand; why McCain let Obama get away with the "No Al Qaeda in Iraq prior to 2003" bit. That's a provable lie, Zarqawi fled there, and AQ sub-group Ansar Al Islam was in northern Iraq for years prior to the imvasion. Most Democrats in general and Obama in particular are too intellectually lazy to learn much about Islamic terrorist groups or the situation in Iraq, but no Republican calls them on it. I'm a pretty small cog in the government machine and I research this shit, you would think a guy running for President would trying and get some grasp of it. UGAdaw,
The other thing McCain let Obama go on is the that al Qaeda is stronger now than ever. That's just beyond ridiculous and yet Obama said it 2 or 3 times and McCain let it pass. Kempermanx, Maybe but tmi3rd was wondering about the polls showing Obama winning. Now that might be pollsters are cooking the books or Obama played better 'out there' than he did with even the 'pros' who are in the tank for him. Personally, I think it's the latter. Posted by: DrewM. at September 27, 2008 01:05 PM (hlYel) 26
The other thing McCain let Obama go on is the that al Qaeda is stronger now than ever. Yeah, I forgot about that one. We've taken a wrecking ball to a well financed, extremely organized global terror organization since 2001. We've frozen money, denied sanctuary, and killed thousands of them. An increase in activity in Afghanistan doesn't erase the cosmic ass-kicking they've received in Iraq. The idea that AQ is stronger is a laughable joke and shows Obama simply doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Posted by: UGAdawg at September 27, 2008 01:16 PM (MDHAs) 27

I have two bracelets and a third on order. I have the details of both memorized. I would say all three, but I sometimes get jumbled on the date Mario bought it down outside Mahmudiyah. I'd been awake for about a week at the time and I can never remember if I saw him when he was leaving on the patrol he bought it on or one earlier that week.
One, for SFC Jerry "Mad Dog" Shriver (MIA Cambodia, 1969), is a stainless steel replacement for a red aluminum one that basically corroded off me in college. The second my wife got for me for our brigade CSM, Jerry Lee Wilson, who bought it in Mosul in '03 on our first tour. I'm drawing a line at three. Dave McCormick is getting a memorial plaque on my Israeli 7.62mm Mauser instead. Posted by: SGT Dan at September 27, 2008 01:22 PM (7ppVp) 30

Fuck that, he had one name to remember. Supposedly, he wears this bracelet 24/7. His response shows that the bracelet is jewelry, the same as his faggy watch. He could give two shits about the man who is represented by it. I am perplexed as to why anyone would give him a pass on this. It's Obama in a nutshell, symbols that mean nothing to him, but are supposed to move the hoople-heads who worship this amiable half-wit.

Drew, I don't get the reaction of Luntz people. Of course, they WERE in Las Vegas, a rather sketchy group of people. I think we won't any idea until Monday or Tuesday, after people talk about it at work. I think the bracelet thing is going to work for us. Also, The One sure looked nervous and un presidential to me. McC didn't look much better the first 30 minutes. The first 30 minutes are the most important and I think Lenir sand bagged McC. If the house GOP gets a deal, McC will kill The One in the next debate. Watch as see, the "Crisis" will get less important to the MSM if it looks more like it will help McC. We'll know soon enough. TCB- no, the Teleprompter Jesus won't get a free pass on anything from me. I don't think SGT Ryan Jopek would want this motherfucker to get a free pass either. The fact that that corrupt socialist bastard is still looking at grass from the top side and might have the requisite number of gullible idiots around to steal the White House in the name of "global citizenship" or "the international community" following the Saul Alinsky model is an affront to my dead brothers (and sisters) going back to Lexington Green and Concord Bridge. Seriously. What do we do if this fraud, charlatan, street-hustling agitating Socialist uses ACORN and other avenues to steal the election? Do we get to scream for the next for or eight years "He's not my president!" the way the Democrats did after the '00 Florida recounts? What are we supposed to do while he dismantles the counterterrorism programs that keep the fight over on their side of the ocean? Do we wait for the Islamics to sneak a nuke into the country? Do we wait for 50% tax rates to pay for bribes to the poor? That's what I'd love Wilkow, Levin, Mike Church, or someone to come up with. Do we have a Plan B if MCain loses this thing and it all goes to shit? Posted by: SGT Dan at September 27, 2008 04:10 PM (jUeGo) 42

It sure struck me at the time that he didn't remember the name on his wrist. I perked up as soon as he started replying that he, too, wore a bracelet. It was kind of odd that he began stammering immediately after that.

Let's look at the real world, John McCain's and Sarah Palin's sons have gone to Iraq as a foot soldiers, but Biden's son, he's going to Iraq as part of the already disgraced military JAGs.

Ok I'm a Gold Star Mom. I wear my son's bracelet and all I can say is I know for a FACT my son would want for the mission he served to be finished and a victory! I also know that if you are going to wear the bracelet of one of these fallen heroes you DAMNED WELL better KNOW the man's name! and as much as you can find out about him. The purpose of these bracelets is to HONOR someone. Fubbling their name or forgetting it is not honoring them.
Obama will throw that bracelet aside the day after the elections.. to him it is political jewerly nothing more. He doesn't have the ablitily to understand the full meaning of it. Posted by: Knottie at September 27, 2008 10:57 PM (mUzhB) 49

I've worn the same bracelet every day since I got it as a young jarhead almost 20 years ago. It's been through a war, traveled around the world, been to my wedding and the birth of both of my sons. I will be buried with it. The man's body was recovered not too long ago, but I still wear it to remember that young Marine I never met. LCpl Gregory S. Copenhaver No, I didn't have to look. i call bullshit also. i've owned two bracelets, a red aluminum one for PV2 Freddie Kemp, 7th Cav who fell off a log crossing the I Drang river and was never found.
his bracelet cracked in half the day i got an email explaining what had happened to him, and i still have the pieces. my 2nd bracelet is for SP4 James Rozo, who went for a supply run with his NCO and another Soldier, and they were never seen again. i have it and wear it daily on my right wrist, which is a habit i picked up while still a Reservist. i wanted it to be a subtle reminder to my command chain that they had responsibilities, and that said responsibilities had serious consequences every time i rendered a salute. i know all this without looking at either one.
