From the first Presidential Debate in Oxford, Mississippi last night, Barack Obama changes direction on missile defense quicker than an "unproven" defensive interceptor.

Left at this, McCain will miss an opportunity here.

This is not the flip-flop you think it is. Set A (the video claiming he will not pursue "unproven missile defense systems") does not exclude Set B (we need some sort of missile defense.)

This is a perfectly consistent message as it stands.

What must now follow is nailing down Obama on the terms:

-- What does he consider to be an acceptable missile defense system?

-- Of those systems we have tested successfully, will he continue development and deployment?

-- Does he agree this technology should be shared with other countries such as Poland, Ukraine, etc...?

-- What are his standards of "unproven"? Obviously every system on paper is unproven and requires funding to reach the point of real-world testing. Will he put a moratorium on the research into new systems?

-- Which, if any, of the existing "proven" systems will he cut funding on?

So far you have a crack to worry at, but left as it is, this particular dam isn't broken yet.

He clearly implied that by "unproven systems" he meant the entire missile defense system, a system that indeed "weaponizes" space (that's where most intercepts occur).

But you're right, he'll weasel-word his way through it in any case.

I disagree. At this point, I am afraid that much of the left really doesn't care what Obama says, as long as they get a black President, their symbol of a victory for "progressivism". Obama can practically say "I agree with Senator McCain" on any subject, and his base tacitly understands that he will probably flip back to them... after he is President. Meanwhile he can appear more and more reasonable as a choice for voters who are actually undecided or suffering from white guilt.

We are in a very dangerous position here. We have a candidate who is very attractive to the left (and blacks) for the color of his skin, with his positions almost a secondary consideration in their minds. So he can take them for granted while appealing to the rest of the electorate on other issues as he sees fit to.

McCain's only winning strategy is to:

1. Atack Obama's unsavory past, and establish him in the public eye as an absolutely shameless liar and panderer. Which he is.

2. Challenge him to either accept or reject strong conservative positions. But this is made difficult by the Mav's own lack of resolve in that area.

3. Oh... and attack the fucking media!! Doesn't anyone realize how detested the media are by average Americans?!

Agreed. I think it is obvious his original message is consistent with the long-standing position of the left that missile-defense is bad.

There is an opportunity here to nail him down on a position that will either leave a bad taste in the mouth of his base, or will weaken his draw on moderates who believe in strong defense.

We'll see if McCain will use this in a sophisticated manner, or will take the unsophisticated and easily deflected approach of claiming a flip-flop before Obama has stated his position unambiguously.
